Drivers of perceived market and eco-performance in the foodservice industry

Purpose To foster environmental and sustainable practices, foodservice enterprises should exhibit a high degree of corporate social responsibility (CSR), ecological consciousness and innovation in green initiatives. This study examines the influences of CSR practices (i.e. economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic), environmental marketing activities (i.e. strategic and tactical) and innovation (i.e.technological and organizational) as drivers of market and eco-performance in the foodservice industry. Design/methodology/approach Based on an established framework of CSR, environmental marketing and innovation, an exploratory conceptual model was formulated and empirically assessed. Survey data were collected from representatives of the Korean foodservice franchise industry. Data analysis consisted of frequency analysis, reliability analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis and path analysis. Findings Market performance was influenced by tactical environmental marketing, as well as technological and organizational innovation. Eco-performance was affected by tactical environmental marketing and technological innovation. However, technological innovation and organizational innovation were influenced by tactical environmental marketing, but were not significantly affected by strategic environmental marketing. Additionally, strategic environmental marketing was influenced by economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic CSR. Last, tactical environmental marketing was affected by economic, ethical and philanthropic CSR. Practical implications CSR, environmental marketing activities and innovation provide numerous benefits to businesses. Such benefits include enhanced market and eco-performance, both of which create competitive advantages. Originality/value There is a paucity of research on the effects of environmental marketing and innovation on corporate performance in the foodservice industry. The findings provide greater insights into the impacts of CSR, environmental marketing and innovation on corporations’ desired outcomes.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the perception of the bankers towards an integrated approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in a strategic way of achieving sustainable growth of the banking sector. The paper additionally provides insights into different CSR initiatives and their implementation process in the context of scheduled commercial banks (SCB) of India.Design/methodology/approachThe study is exploratory and endorses the qualitative approach of primary research methodology by adopting a non-random stratified sampling method. The localist approach of the face-to-face interview has been applied to collect the data from 26 elite class respondents from 13 SCBs. The interview method was semi-structured and open-ended. The conformity, trustworthiness, credibility, transferability, dependability test of the study have ensured the quality of the data.FindingsThe study reveals that the bankers perceive CSR as a moral obligation for the benefit of the society, beyond the regular banking operations. Further, the study comprehends that the CSR initiatives play a vital role in establishing the bank's image, brand and reputation, as well as, building a strong bond of trust among the employees and the bank management. Besides, CSR activities facilitate to cultivate a better culture by improvising in the quality of customer service for achieving competitive advantages.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of the study represent a significant contribution to CSR theory from the interface of banking and society. Significantly, the results confirm that CSR initiatives play a vital role in building trust and minimise the gap between the employees and the management of the bank. The banks can increase its acceptance in the society and achieve competitive advantage by integrating CSR objectives with the business objectives to strengthen the corporate personality and brand.Practical implicationsThe study will help practitioners to develop the social identity of their firm to achieve competitive advantages in long-run. The bankers can channelise their limited resources while planning, designing and the implementation of different CSR activities with the overall goal of the bank in a cost-effective way. The study is confined only to public and private SCBs and limited to the geographical scope of one state in India. Therefore, further exploration may be carried out by considering other banks and geographic regions in India and different cross-cultural settings.Originality/valueThe originality of the study lies with the in-depth analysis and quality check of the data. The results can contribute significant value to the qualitative method of conducting research.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of Islamic banks’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) using data collected from stakeholders in Malaysia. While Islamic scholars have developed the Islamic CSR from the Qur’anic verses, the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) and from the western ideologies, the focus of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of the developed Islamic CSR practices. Design/methodology/approach Quantitative research design was adopted for this study. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and other analyses are performed on the data collected from 193 stakeholders in Malaysia. Findings Based on the data collected and analyzed, the results show that stakeholders view the Malaysian Islamic banks’ CSRs as effective. Research limitations/implications This study investigates the effectiveness of Malaysian Islamic banks’ CSR based on the survey data collected. However, future studies could explore this in greater depth using mixed methods. Practical implications The research findings have great implications for researchers. Since this study is among the few research studies that investigate the effectiveness of Islamic CSR, the researchers have paved ways for further investigation in this area. In addition, the study encourages the Malaysian Islamic banks and other Islamic financial institutions to contribute more to the society. Originality/value The study examines the effectiveness of Islamic banks’ CSR and contributes to the growing discussions on the Islamic CSR. The study has opened up this area for further investigations by other researchers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of HR interventions (rewards and incentives, training, organisational learning) on employee creativity to enhance organisational innovation in connection to the Indian automobile industries. Design/methodology/approach The study examined 258 valid responses of middle-level and top-level executives working in four wheeler automobile manufacturing units, and research and development units constituted in Southern India. The hypothesised model’s validity was tested through structural equation modelling (SEM). The confirmatory factor analysis established the reliability and validity of the dimensions and the related hypotheses were tested by using SEM. Findings The findings illustrate that HR interventions have an impact on employee creativity which helps in enhancing organisational innovation. Originality/value The research is unique in its attempt to measure the creativity of an individual for organisational innovation by combining the existing scales of employee creativity. The paper contributes to the HR literature by incorporating HR interventions and employee creativity into a research model that enhances organisational innovation.

Purpose The main purpose of this paper is to develop a reliable and valid scale for measuring halal brand association (HalBA) for Islamic banks. Brand association is a core dimension of brand equity that Islamic bank managers need to develop to maintain competitiveness. Using the process proposed by Churchill for developing measures of marketing constructs, an instrument to assess HalBA for Islamic bank is formulated. Design/methodology/approach The methodology consists of developing the scale based on a literature review and qualitative method. The proposed scale is then purified and validated through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Findings Based on the EFA and CFA, the result reveals that HalBA for Islamic banks contains 15 attributes which can be categorized into three dimensions: Shari’ah-compliant association, God-consciousness association and corporate social responsibility association. Practical implications The scale developed could assist practitioners in further understanding the dimensions and measurement of halal bank association, particularly in Islamic banking institutions. Knowledge of the dimensions of HalBA that customers seek from an Islamic bank can help managers and marketers to design branding strategies that better meet the needs of consumers, thereby increasing their satisfaction and loyalty. Originality/value The concept of brand association has been explored primarily from a conventional marketing perspective. This study offers a new dimension of HalBA in the context of Islamic banks.

Purpose Understanding the effect of competitor’s marketing activities as well as analyzing the impact of one’s own marketing activities is equally important. The purpose of this paper is to determine the role of competing bank’s marketing activities (i.e. competitor’s price and product variety) and main bank’s characteristics (bank’s reputation and expertise) in the cross-buying intentions of customers by studying the interrelationships among these. Design/methodology/approach This study has adopted a hybrid model of confirmatory factor analysis and the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory. Data were gathered from two different samples of bank customers and bank experts, using closed-ended questionnaire. Findings The results revealed that competitor’s price influences the cross-buying intentions of customers more than the reputation and expertise of primary bank. Bank’s reputation, expertise and competitor’s price were found causing factors. The remaining two factors, namely competitor’s product variety and cross-buying intentions, were belonging to the effect group. Practical implications For practice, this study guides banking institutions for resource allocation. Continuous and extensive staff training should be provided to sales staff. Bank should realize customers that they are getting much more value in return of what they are paying. Originality/value This study is one of few studies in marketing literature which investigates the effect of competitors on cross-buying.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how sports marketing can attract audiences towards less popular sports. Design/methodology/approach A total of 22 interviews were conducted first to explore the opinions of sports professionals about how audiences can be attracted towards less popular sports. Then 479 responses to an online questionnaire were collected. The online questionnaire includes a pretest-posttest experiment in which each respondent has watched a video. Confirmatory factor analysis, reliability test and hierarchical regression analysis have been performed. Findings The elements of sports marketing that can help to attract audiences towards less popular sports are sports media, sports advertising, star athlete and sports sponsorship. The performance of national teams moderates the relationship between sports advertising and attraction towards less popular sports. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, a definition of sustainable sports marketing is introduced for the first time. Sustainable sports marketing can be defined as the continuous implementation of marketing activities in the sports context to ensure the continuous existence of the sports themselves (all types of sports) and the prosperity of future generations. Elements that can attract audiences towards less popular sports have been examined for the first time.

PurposeThe aim of this study is to estimate the relationship between technological innovation and corporate environmental performance among energy companies working in Egypt.Design/methodology/approachThe study extended the aim with the intention to assess the role of green financing in enhancing corporate environmental performance. Partial least squares (PLS)-based structural equation modeling (SEM) is applied to estimate the nexus among study variables.FindingsThe results indicated that technological innovation influenced environmental performance and has a positive impact on company performance. The role of green financing for environmental performance is also significant and positive. Moreover, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has insignificant role in environmental performance of the energy companies in the study context.Research limitations/implicationsThe study offers a valuable model for general managers of manufacturing organizations and policymakers to manage CSR, environmental strategy and green innovation in examining environmental performance. It can help to assist general managers of large manufacturing organizations to strengthen their internal resources like CSR, environmental strategy and green innovation to enhance environmental performance.Practical implicationsThe findings of this article will help the practitioners to design policies regarding sustainable energy systems and green finance in the presence of any natural calamity.Originality/valueThis study primarily complements the existing literature by establishing how green financing and CSR can augment and/or interact between technological innovation and corporate environmental performance under COVID-19 crises, in a developing country.

The article analyzes the specificity of the marketing activities of the gas supplying organization involved in the socially significant projects. Social marketing acts as a concept acceptable in conditions of increased corporate social responsibility of the society and organization. Consideration for the interests of a commercial organization requires support from government agencies in terms of subsidizing costs when supplying localities with liquefied gas, in the absence of pipelines and the economic viability of their construction. The most important condition providing the access of the population to natural gas is the choice of a reliable gas supplier that could compensate for lost income at the expense of other activities, and guarantee high quality public services. Assessment of the quality of customer service is an indicator of the effectiveness of the tasks set by the gas supplying organization and the criterion for selecting a partner organization for a social project of the public authorities. The paper assessed the competitive advantages of a gas supplying organization operating on the principles of social marketing. Recommendations are given on the development of the organization’s activities while reducing the demand for liquefied gas supplies in the region.

PurposeAlthough corporate social responsibility (CSR) is one of the essential marketing activities in the hotel industry, the effect of CSR perception on customer's revisit intention varies depending on mediators and contexts. Thus, this study aims to examine how hotel companies can effectively influence customers' patronage behaviors by leveraging overall customers' CSR perception, trust and commitment.Design/methodology/approachFor this purpose, an online survey is conducted among hotel customers in the USA. Partial least squares–structural equation modeling is utilized to analyze the collected data.FindingsThe results show that customers' perception toward CSR does not have a direct effect on customers' revisit intention. Interestingly, the authors find that customers' perception influences their revisit intention only via increasing trust and commitment. Also, trust appears to be highly critical for positive behavioral outcomes than commitment.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitations of the current research are that the different types of CSR activities and customers' demographics were not compared.Practical implicationsCustomers' revisit intention is created when hotel companies provide not only CSR initiatives but also customers' perceived connection with the hotel brand.Originality/valueTourism and hospitality companies have focused on CSR activities because CSR activities are influential strategies to attract customers who want meaningful, responsible and sustainable experiences. By applying the cognitive consistency theory, the results of this study indicate that hotel companies can successfully use CSR activities to develop customers' revisit intention by enhancing their relational value.

Purpose This paper aims to provide an overview of how trends encompassing SOLOMO (social, local, mobile) factors impact marketing activities in small and medium-sized hospitality enterprises (SMEs). It explores the relevancy of these factors and their application in the industry and synthesizes them in the context of Dubai’s path toward Expo 2020 by collecting practitioner input. Design/methodology/approach This paper provides continuity with the author’s previous WHATT article exploring SME website implementation by expanding its scope by analyzing literature on SOLOMO adoption in the hospitality industry, drawing from a range of journals and applicable industry sources. It collects informal commentary from practitioners with relevant local experience to contextualize the findings within Dubai’s digital roadmap. Findings Several aspects of SOLOMO in the context of hospitality have been examined by researchers; however, their successful applicability to the SME sector (which is still struggling with the fundamentals of website implementation) lacks comprehensive consideration. There is a dearth of academic and governmental guidance for industry executives. At the same time, trends beyond SOLOMO, particularly around data analytics, are emerging and require incorporation into a digital SME roadmap. Practical implications Executives in the hospitality SME domain are encouraged to continue focusing on the fundamentals of website implementation while they take into consideration the trends around SOLOMO identified in the study. A holistic, result-driven view of digital marketing is required to ensure focused resource usage. Closer collaboration between private sector, policymakers and academia will support Dubai’s initiatives to leverage its high degree of technological readiness for marketing innovation in the SME sector. Originality/value This manuscript provides a practically oriented and engaging overview of the applicability of SOLOMO concepts for hospitality SMEs, with a local focus on the Dubai ecosystem.
