Predicting detailed body sizes by feature parameters

Purpose – Detailed body sizes are prerequisite for made to measure or customized manufacture. Nowadays, detailed body sizes can be precisely obtained by using 3D scanners, however, the high prices of the scanners block the population for such approaches. The purpose of this paper is to provide an economical and accurate data-driven method which can predict detailed body sizes with a small number of feature sizes. Design/methodology/approach – First, the representative body sizes are extracted from dozens of detail body sizes by using factor analysis and garment knowledge. Among the representative body sizes, those that are easy to be measured are selected as the feature parameters (FPs). Second, by mining the database of the body sizes, mapping from the FPs to the detailed body sizes is expressed by a combination of radial basis function and multiply linear regression. Thus, for an individual human body, his/her detailed body sizes can be predicted by a small number of FPs. Findings – First, FPs which are easily measured and represent the main shape information of a human body are extracted. Second, detailed body sizes can be functionally predicted by the FPs. Originality/value – Traditionally, measuring dozens of body sizes for each human body is tiresome and the accuracy of the sizes depends on the experience of the gaugers. In this paper, a small number of body sizes are selected as the FPs which are easy to be measured and can functionally express the other body sizes. Thus, by only measuring the FPs, the detailed body sizes can be intelligently and automatically predicted. This approach is meaningful to improve the intelligence and accuracy of the measurement, so that even an inexperienced gauger is competent to obtain accurate detailed body sizes.

Purpose 3D garment design technology is developing rapidly thereby creating a need for different approaches to developing the patterns. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the 3D dynamic ease distribution for a 3D garment design. Design/methodology/approach Standard garments were created from Size 2 to Size 14 for ten human subjects. Landmarks location on both human body and the standard garment under dynamic postures are recorded, and he fit and comfort evaluation of the standard garment were collected from the ten human subjects. Finally, these data were used to evaluate the 3D dynamic ease distribution for a 3D garment design. Findings 3D dynamic ease evaluation is challenging and the findings showed that the upper-arm design is a core element of the whole 3D garment design. The upper arm is not only a connecting part for both front and back pieces of the garment, but is also the main active part of the body, so it is the essential element to affect the comfort and fit of the garment under dynamic postures. Originality/value This research provides a novel 3D ease evaluation by analyzing the landmarks location of both human body and standard garment, and fit and comfort evaluation of the standard garment, which are all carried under dynamic postures.

PurposeCurrently, a common method of reconstructing mannequin is based on the body measurements or body features, which only preserve the body size lacking of the accurate body geometric shape information. However, the same human body measurement does not equal to the same body shape. This may result in an unfit garment for the target human body. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel scanning-based pipeline to reconstruct the personalized mannequin, which preserves both body size and body shape information.Design/methodology/approachThe authors first capture the body of a subject via 3D scanning, and a statistical body model is fit to the scanned data. This results in a skinned articulated model of the subject. The scanned body is then adjusted to be pose-symmetric via linear blending skinning. The mannequin part is then extracted. Finally, a slice-based method is proposed to generate a shape-symmetric 3D mannequin.FindingsA personalized 3D mannequin can be reconstructed from the scanned body. Compared to conventional methods, the method can preserve both the size and shape of the original scanned body. The reconstructed mannequin can be imported directly into the apparel CAD software. The proposed method provides a step for digitizing the apparel manufacturing.Originality/valueCompared to the conventional methods, the main advantage of the authors’ system is that the authors can preserve both size and geometry of the original scanned body. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: decompose the process of the mannequin reconstruction into pose symmetry and shape symmetry; propose a novel scanning-based pipeline to reconstruct a 3D personalized mannequin; and present a slice-based method for the symmetrization of the 3D mesh.

PurposeDesign of bedding textiles that contact the human body affects the sleep quality. Bedding textiles contribute to comfort sense during the sleep duration, in addition to ambient and bed microclimate. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of different layer properties on the compression recovery and thermal characteristics of multilayer bedding textiles.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, woven and knitted multilayer bedding textiles were manufactured from fabric, fiber, sponge and interlining, respectively. Different sponge thickness, fiber and interlining weight were used in the layers of samples. Later, the pilling resistance, compression and recovery, air permeability and thermal conductivity of multilayer bedding textiles were investigated.FindingsThe results indicated that samples with the higher layer weight and thickness provide better compression recovery and lower air permeability properties. It was also found that knitted surfaces show the higher air permeability than the woven surfaces depending on the fabric porosity. Layer properties have insignificant effect on the thermal conductivity values.Originality/valueWhile researchers mostly focus on thermal comfort properties of garments, there are limited studies about comfort properties of bedding textiles in the literature. Furthermore, compression recovery properties of bedding textiles have also a great importance in terms of comfort. Originality of this study is that these properties were analyzed together.

Purpose This study aims to focus on electronic applications that have an effective role in raising the awareness of the dangers of viruses’ transmission from person-to-person and their positive and important impact on people’s lives. Design/methodology/approach The authors illustrated the effects of socializing with infected people on a human body by a model in geometry and how the prospected antibiotic annihilates the structure of the virus. The authors discussed vital operations inside the human body to expound the geometry of objects that are closed under their operations, such as viruses, especially Coronaviridae. Findings Also, the authors discussed some of the e-health applications in Jordan. As e-health activities, programs and applications have been given attention, the authors focused on potentials for constructing strategies that lead to create a featuring health technology. Originality/value Moreover, in this study, the authors explored the structure and geometry of Coronaviridae family, especially coronavirus that causes lots of diseases, and explained its movement mechanism using the mathematical structures.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to report effect of rotation of micropolar thermoelastic solid with microtemperatures heated by laser pulses. The problem was solved analytically to obtain the expressions of the physical quantities.Design/methodology/approachThe analytical method used was the normal mode.FindingsNumerical results for the physical quantities were presented graphically and the results were analyzed. The comparisons were established in variant cases of the effects used and then shown graphically.Originality/valueIn the present work, the authors shall discuss the effect of rotation and temperature-dependent properties with the laser pulses in the micropolar thermoelastic medium with microtemperatures. This problem is very important in more empirical branches such as the human body and earthquake engineering.

Purpose What happens when a librarian outgrows their maker learning location or transfers to a new library? The purpose of this study is to explore the planning process for second and/or new library makerspaces. Is the planning more intentional? Is there more focus on how the makerspace should be put together for the community served? Is the community further involved? This study will explore those questions and more. Design/methodology/approach Using content analysis, the perspectives of practicing librarians in the achievement of subsequent makerspaces are examined. Data include librarian interviews, an analysis using NVivo 11 through the lens of design thinking, and a final review using member checking by each research participant. Findings Makerspaces continue to grow in popularity in school and public/community libraries. What is unexplored is the moving from a first makerspace to the implementation of a second and/or new maker learning location. More intentional planning is involved. The community served by the library is further engaged in the planning. Study results illustrate the value that community insight and intentional planning play in the design and implementation of makerspaces. Originality/value Makerspaces in libraries continue to grow in popularity; in turn, the body of peer-reviewed, scholarly publications also continues to grow. Librarians in the field are beginning to move from their first to second makerspaces. This study investigates those perspectives. Much can be gained from the experiences of those who have implemented their second or third makerspace.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify human capital factors that pertain both to setting up and successfully running a business. To achieve this objective, the authors apply and extend the theory of career choice offered by Lazear (2005) that explains individual selection into entrepreneurship.Design/methodology/approachThe authors hypothesise that individuals with broader educational and professional backgrounds are more likely to start a business and are more likely to run a business in the long term. The authors tested the hypotheses using unique data from 800 current entrepreneurs, 800 employees who were previously entrepreneurs and 842 employees with no entrepreneurial experience, by means of a logit regression with robust standard errors and extensive robustness checks.FindingsThe authors empirically show that individuals with more diverse educational and professional backgrounds tend to have both greater chances of starting a company, as well as a higher probability of entrepreneurial success. Surprisingly, having managerial experience proved to exert a negative influence on the likelihood of starting a business while having an insignificant impact on the odds of entrepreneurial success.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings are informative for those planning or pursuing an entrepreneurial career, but they are also relevant for the purpose of entrepreneurship education.Originality/valueThe author's extend the body of research supporting Lazear's (2005) theory by showing that broad education and professional experience not only contribute to a higher propensity to start a company but they are also success factors in business per se.

Purpose This paper aims to explore how advanced integrated report preparers internalise and operationalise material value creation information to manage the generation of such information for the integrated report. Design/methodology/approach The paper adopts a qualitative approach using in-depth semi-structured interviews to examine how information about material value creation matters in six South African organisations are managed. Findings The findings will be useful to integrated reporting adopters as to how they might implement appropriate processes and systems to determine, communicate, collect and process information about matters that substantively affect their value creation. Originality/value The paper contributes to the body of knowledge by providing insight on how material value creation matters are determined, communicated internally and information about such matters generated.

Purpose Change is no longer an event in HR. Competition is tougher than ever, and this battle for top talent is a vicious cycle that doesn't stop but reinvents itself all the time. The recruitment market needs to be more responsive to the continuous cycle of innovation and recognise the increasingly competitive marketplace that is rapidity getting tighter. Design/methodology/approach With more than 20 years as the founder of a leading recruitment technology vendor, the detail and content supplied in the feature are all of the author’s own thoughts and experiences, drawn from his own expertise and learning from others he has met en route. Findings More often than not, recruitment teams are doing what they have always done – seeing the same candidates and visiting the same events. Change, or more specifically in this case, technology, actually has the ability to speed up the process, enhance the candidate experience and give time back to recruiters to spend with the candidates. Originality/value It is widely known that talented people have higher expectations and opportunities than ever before. That makes it crucial for companies to reach them, deliver a highly engaging candidate experience and nurture a relationship well ahead of open opportunities.

PurposeThis paper examines the role of curiosity in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) work contexts.Design/methodology/approachThis conceptual article relied upon an examination of literature about curiosity, VUCA and soft skills.FindingsCuriosity, when encouraged and supported within the workforce, may aid organizations in closing soft skill gaps and better navigating ambiguity, perpetually changing business landscapes, and rapidly advancing technology.Research limitations/implicationsEmpirical research is needed to validate, confirm and further explicate the specific mechanisms and value of curiosity within VUCA environments.Practical implicationsOrganizations need to move beyond espousing a value of curiosity to deliberately and effectively cultivating and supporting it within their employees.Originality/valueAlthough ample research and literature has examined curiosity, soft skills and VUCA environments independently, the body of literature on the specific role of curiosity in such environments is limited.
