Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamic characteristics of exponential slider bearings lubricated with a ferrofluid. Because of the development of modern engineering, the increasing use of ferrofluids in lubrication fields has shown great importance. Understanding the dynamic characteristics of exponential film bearings is helpful for engineers in bearing selection. Design/methodology/approach Applying the Shliomis ferrohydrodynamic flow model and considering the squeezing action of bearing pads, a dynamic Reynolds equation is obtained for an exponential film slider bearing lubricated with a ferrofluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Analytical solutions of dynamic characteristics are obtained. Findings According to the results, the ferrofluid-lubricated exponential film bearing provides better dynamic stiffness and damping characteristics than the non-ferrofluid ones, especially the bearing operating at higher values of the volume concentration parameter and the magnetic Langevin parameter. Originality/value Numerical tables of stiffness and damping coefficients for different values of the volume concentration parameter and the Langevin parameter are also included for engineering references.

This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of parabolic film slider bearing operating with ferrofluids. Comparing with the slider bearing of an inclined plane film, the parabolic film slider bearing operating with ferrofluids in the presence of external magnetic fields provide higher better dynamic stiffness and damping performances.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamic characteristics of spiral groove liquid film seal under the effect of thermal–fluid–solid coupling. Design/methodology/approach The dynamic analysis model of spiral groove liquid film seal under the effect of thermal–fluid–solid coupling was established by perturbation method. The steady-state and perturbation Reynolds equations were solved, and the steady-state sealing performance and dynamic characteristic coefficients of the liquid film were obtained. Findings Compared with the liquid film without coupling method, a divergent seal gap is formed between the seal rings under the effect of thermal–fluid–solid coupling, the minimum liquid film thickness decreases, the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients of the liquid film are increased and the thermoelastic deformation of the end-face improves the dynamic performance of the liquid film seal. Originality/value The dynamic characteristics of the spiral groove liquid film seal under the effect of thermal–fluid–solid coupling are studied, which provides a theoretical reference for optimizing the dynamic performance of the non-contacting liquid film seal.

In the present theoretical investigation, the effect of ferrofluid on the dynamic characteristics of curved slider bearings is presented using Shliomis model which accounts for the rotation of magnetic particles, their magnetic moments, and the volume concentration in the fluid. The modified Reynolds equation for the dynamic state of the bearing is obtained. The results of dynamic stiffness and damping characteristics are presented. It is observed that the effect of rotation of magnetic particles improves the stiffness and damping capacities of the bearings.

With increasing need for high-speed, high-temperature, and oil-free turbomachinery, gas foil bearings (GFBs) have been considered to be the best substitutes for traditional oil-lubricated bearings. A multi-cantilever foil bearing (MCFB), a novel GFB with multi-cantilever foil strips serving as the compliant underlying structure, was designed, fabricated, and tested. A series of static and dynamic load tests were conducted to measure the structural stiffness and equivalent viscous damping of the prototype MCFB. Experiments of static load versus deflection showed that the proposed bearing has a large mechanical energy dissipation capability and a pronounced nonlinear static stiffness that can prevents overly large motion amplitude of journal. Dynamic load tests evaluated the influence of motion amplitude, loading orientation and misalignment on the dynamic stiffness and equivalent viscous damping with respect to excitation frequency. The test results demonstrated that the dynamic stiffness and damping are strongly dependent on the excitation frequency. Three motion amplitudes were applied to the bearing housing to investigate the effects of motion amplitude on the dynamic characteristics. It is noted that the bearing dynamic stiffness and damping decreases with incrementally increasing motion amplitudes. A high level of misalignment can lead to larger static and dynamic bearing stiffness as well as to larger equivalent viscous damping. With dynamic loads applied to two orientations in the bearing midplane separately, the dynamic stiffness increases rapidly and the equivalent viscous damping declines slightly. These results indicate that the loading orientation is a non-negligible factor on the dynamic characteristics of MCFBs.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) effect on porous exponential slider bearings lubricated with couple stress fluid and to derive the modified Reynolds’s equation for non-Newtonian fluid under various operating conditions to obtain the optimum bearing parameters. Design/methodology/approach Based upon the MHD theory and Stokes theory for couple stress fluid, the governing equations relevant to the problem under consideration are derived. This paper analyzes the effect on porous exponential slider bearings with an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Semi-numerical solutions are obtained and discussed. Findings It is found that there is an increase in the load carrying capacity, frictional force and decrease in the co-efficient of friction in porous bearings due to the presence of magnetic effects with couple stress fluid. Originality/value This study is relatively original and gives the MHD effect on porous exponential slider bearings lubricated with couple stress fluid. The author believes that the paper presents these results for the first time.

Purpose This study aims to examine the magneto-elastohydrodynamic effect on finite-width slider-bearings lubrication using a non-Newtonian lubricant. Design/methodology/approach Based on the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) theory and Stokes micro-continuum mechanics, the modified two-dimensional Reynolds equation including bearing deformation was derived. Findings It is found that the bearing deformation diminishes the load-capacity and increases the friction coefficient in comparison with the rigid case. However, the non-Newtonian effect increases load-capacity but decreases the friction coefficient. Moreover, the use of a transverse magnetic field increases both the friction coefficient and load capacity. Originality/value This study combines for the first time MHD and elastic deformation effects on finite-width slider-bearings using a non-Newtonian lubricant.

The general dynamic Reynolds equation of sliding-squeezing surfaces with micro-polar fluids is derived for the assessment of dynamic characteristics of bearings with general film thickness. The detailed analysis is presented for the plane inclined slider bearings by using perturbation method. Two Reynolds-type equations corresponding to steady performance and perturbed characteristics are obtained. The closed form solution of these equations is obtained. The numerical computations of the results show that, the micropolar fluids provide an improved characteristics for both steady-state and the dynamic stiffness and damping characteristics. It is found that the maximum steady-load-carrying capacity is function of coupling parameter and is achieved at smaller values of profile parameter for larger values of the coupling parameter.

The traditional eight-coefficient bearing model only considers the translational motion of the bearings and neglects the tilting motion and coupling effects between them. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of the spiral-grooved opposed-hemisphere gas bearing considering five degrees-of-freedom are studied, and 50 dynamic coefficients including the translational, tilting, and coupling components are completely calculated. The Reynolds equations and their perturbed equations are solved by the finite element method to obtain the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients. The effects of the tilting motion on the dynamic coefficients and response are analyzed, respectively. The results show that the coupling coefficients between the translational and tilting motions, which have been neglected in most previous studies, are significant at large eccentricity ratio. But these coupling coefficients have little effect on the dynamic response. On the other hand, the influences of the tilting motion on the synchronous response and natural frequency are remarkable and will decrease the stability of the rotor bearing system.

Purpose Nowadays, the use of Newtonian fluid as a lubricant is diminishing day by day, and the use of non-Newtonian fluids has gained importance. This paper presents an analysis of the static characteristics of Rayleigh step slider bearing lubricated with non-Newtonian Rabinowitsch fluid, which has not been studied so far. The purpose of this paper is to derive the modified Reynolds equation for Rabinowitsch fluids for two regions and to obtain the optimum bearing parameters for the Rayleigh step slider bearings. Design/methodology/approach The governing equations relevant to the problem under consideration are derived. The modified Reynolds equation is derived, and it is found to be highly non-linear and hence small perturbation method is adopted to find solution. Findings From this study it is found that there is an increase in the load-carrying capacity, pressure and frictional coefficients for dilatant fluids as compared to the corresponding Newtonian case. Further, for dilatant lubricants the maximum load-carrying capacity is attained for the slightly larger values of entry region length of Rayleigh step bearing as compared to Newtonian and pseudoplastic lubricants. Originality/value Rabinowitsch fluid is used for the study of lubrication characteristics of Rayleigh step bearings. The author believes that the paper presents these results for the first time.

Purpose – Wear in journal bearings occurs when the operating conditions (high load, high temperature, low angular velocity or low viscosity), downgrade the ability of the bearing to carry load. The wear depth increases because the rotor comes in contact with the bearing surface. Wear in journal bearings affects their characteristics because of its influence on the thickness of the fluid film. This influence can be detected in the dynamic behavior of the rotor and especially in the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, the effect of wear on the rotor dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients (K and C) of a short journal bearing is investigated. K and C in this work are estimated by using two methods a semi-analytical method and finite element (FE) analysis implemented in the ANSYS software. Findings – The main goal of this research is to make the identification of wear in journal bearings feasible by observing the alternation of their dynamic coefficients. Both of the methods implemented are proven to be useful, while FE analysis can provide more accurate results. Originality/value – This paper is original and has not been published elsewhere.
