Purpose The study aims to identify the impact of monetary policy tools on the performance of banks in India, and this could be an excellent suggestion to the regulators in framing the favourable interest rates which would meet the macroeconomic objectives of the Indian economy. Design/methodology/approach The design adopted in this study is descriptive and analytical research. Correlation and regression analysis is used to determine the relationship between bank rate (BR) and the performance of public sector banks in India. The sample chosen for this study is the public sector banks actively performing in India. Findings The performance is measured by taking three factors, and they are deposits, loans and advances (L&A) and total asset value of the banks. All three factors have shown an impact of BR on them during the five years. L&A affected the least amongst the three factors, but the other two were significantly impacted by the change in BR by the Reserve Bank of India. So, there should be a favourable fluctuation in the BR which will bring flexibility in the banking system, and they can perform well in the economy and the central bank also can concentrate on the macro-economic situation in the country. Originality/value This paper helps in giving suggestions to the Central bank, researchers, financial institutions to look into the financial performance and monetary policy rates and the central bank also can concentrate on the macro-economic situation in the country.

The monetary policy of Bosnia andHerzegovina is rather limited because it is basedon the principles of a currency boardcharacterized by the impossibility of implementingthe basic monetary policy instruments incomparison with the monetary policy of theEuropean Union. However, the constant presenceof European integrations should point the need fora more drastic change in the monetary policy ofBosnia and Herzegovina. By entering theEuropean Monetary Union (EMU), the monetaryterritory of Bosnia and Herzegovina will becomeone of the branches of the European Central Bank(ECB). In addition, it is not difficult to concludewhy the Law about the Central Bank of Bosnia andHerzegovina has been adopted with the first lawsof the Dayton Agreement, if it is known that thelargest part of the banking system, and thereforethe financial market, is owned by foreign banks.This work will point out the significance of theCentral Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as oneof the most important factors for maintaining thepermanent liquidity of the banking sector inBosnia and Herzegovina. The possibilities andlimitations of the Central Bank of Bosnia andHerzegovina will be determined, with theassumption of macroeconomic sustainability overa longer period of time. The need of reforming thebanking system in Bosnia and Herzegovina will beanalyzed through the constant implementation ofthe Basel standards with the increasingparticipation of foreign banks in the Bosnia andHerzegovina. It will be determined the impact ofthe implementation of the Basel III in the bankingindustry in Bosnia and Herzegovina and itsconsequences on the banking and economicsystem.models, on the ways of financing theelimination of adverse consequences of naturaldisasters.


Significance However, the signs of strain are becoming more marked. On December 15, the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) issued an official warning to all financial institutions, threatening legal penalties for bank managers who try to compensate for rising inflation by offering savers higher interest rates than is legally permitted. Impacts If US sanctions are not lifted, further economic deterioration will increase pressure on the banking system. Iran’s blacklisting by the Financial Action Task Force will be an ongoing burden for the banking sector. Tight credit will make it hard for consumers to get even small loans, such as those for which newlyweds used to be automatically eligible. There are no reliable data, but comprehensive restructuring of the banking system would likely cost hundreds of billions of dollars.


Significance The government and central bank are looking for ways to strengthen the country’s banking system, which is beset by low capital adequacy ratios (CARs) and rising non-performing assets (NPAs). India’s leading conglomerates are asset rich, and their profitability is growing. Impacts The RBI will come under pressure to increase regulation of private as well as public sector banks. Many state-owned banks will merge in a bid to reduce their bad debt. Small NBFCs will face a challenge to sustain liquidity.

The financial market in Poland consists of institutions and rules of market trading regulated by legal norms defined by financial law regulations. The main element of the banking sector in Poland is the banking system. It was structured in 1989 in a two-tier structure with a division into central and commercial banking modelled after the western banking model. The central bank is the main institution of the banking market and indirectly also of the entire financial market. It regulates the amount of money in the national economy using monetary policy instruments. These instruments include the impact on interest rates on the banking market, open market operations, lending and deposit operations and the shape of the reserve requirement of commercial banks. The application and functioning of these monetary policy instruments is strictly regulated by law. Despite the fact that the financial market, like other markets, is built according to the classic model of the market mechanism, in which two sides of the market interact, i.e. demand and supply, and the subject of trading is money in cash or contained in various financial instruments, this market is a particularly institutionalized and regulated market.

Banks play a vital role in economic development and growth of a country. A sound and healthy financial institution ensures overall stability of the system. Commercial and cooperative banks together constitute the Indian Banking System. Commercial Banks account for more than 90% of the banking sector’s assets. The public sector banks account for a substantial part of the banking activity in India. The growth in banking sector has been burdened and hindered by increasing non-performing assets. In this paper, we aim to understand the influence of macroeconomic factors such as GDP per capita, Real Interest rates and inflation along with some bank factors such as bank size, diversification of assets and priority sector lending on NPAs of four PSBs - Punjab National Bank, Andhra Bank, Corporation Bank and Indian Bank. This paper also aims to understand whether corruption could be a determinant for NPAs in these banks.

Purpose In the present competitive scenario in the Indian banking industry, service quality has become one of the most important facets of interest to academic researchers. The purpose of this paper is to determine the dimensions of perceived service quality and investigate their impact on customer satisfaction in the Indian banking context, with special reference to selected public sector banks in India. Design/methodology/approach On the basis of the empirical study, the authors validate a measurement model using structural equation modeling for investigating the impact of perceived service quality dimensions on customer satisfaction. The study sample consists of 480 respondents in the National Capital Region (NCR) of India; the data were collected through a structured questionnaire utilizing a seven-point Likert scale while implementing a purposive sampling technique. Findings The perceived service quality dimensions identified were tangibility, reliability, assurance, responsiveness, empathy, and image. The empirical findings revealed that “responsiveness” was found to be the most significant predictor of customer satisfaction. On the other hand, “image” (corporate image) has a positive but the least significant relationship with customer satisfaction followed by all other constructs. The exception is “reliability,” which is insignificantly related to customer satisfaction in Indian public sector banks. Research limitations/implications The study cannot be generalized in the context of Indian banking sectors, as it only focused on the public sector. The findings of this study suggest that the six dimensions of perceived service quality model are a suitable instrument for evaluating bank service quality for public banks in India. Therefore, bank managers can use this model to assess the bank service quality in the context of Indian public sector banks. Originality/value There is dearth of research focusing on corporate image as a dimension of perceived service quality and its effect on customer satisfaction in the Indian banking context. Furthermore, similar studies were rarely found in the Indian context, especially within the public banking sector. Hence, this paper attempts to accomplish the research gap by empirically testing the satisfaction level of a large sample of the population in NCR toward six dimensions of perceived service quality rendered by selected public sector banks in India.

The eleventh issue of Ushus brings to you a wide variety of scholarly articles encompassing socio-economic and managerial issues. The first paper "Information technology and banking sector with reference to customer satisfaction" focuses on the impact of automation of the public sector banks as per the reflections of the bank officials and the customers. The crest of the article lies in the fact that the customers are being able to keep abreast with the exchange of automation in the modern banking practices and the survey brings out their perception towards it and throws some light on the effective ways to deal with this crisis. The study concludes with the analytical results that public sector bank customers have a positive inclination towards technological upgradation but the banks need to be more flexible in their work process and focus on marketing themselves in order to entrap a larger customer base. The paper titled "Administration of micro-credit by national bank" talks about the successful micro-finance initiatives taken by NABARD how aptly they had been implemented and evolved as a sustainable social movement over a decade now.

Indian banking sector is going through a massive transformation day by day with the advancement of Information and communication Technology and impact of digitization in the banking industry. After the core banking system, banks have moved further to reap the benefits of internet and mobile banking. In order to engage more customers anywhere and anytime without visiting the brick and mortar branches, the banks have now introduced the social media banking. Most of the people are already active in different social media platforms, so banks have grabbed that opportunity to reach people easily and provide services through social media. This paper has made an attempt to analyze the engagement of social media customers in different banks including public and private sector with reference to facebook bank page. The results show that most of the banks have presence on popular social media platforms. With respect to the engagement of customer to all facebook posts during the study period, public sector banks are posting more on their respective facebook page but the customers’ likes as well as dislikes are more for SBI, ICICI and AXIS. In case of shares and comments, SBI and PNB have more and are increasing continuously as these two banks post more on their respective facebook pages. But with respect to customer engagement per facebook post during the study period, customers are engaged more with private sector banks. And it can be said that regarding overall customer engagement people are more engaged with private sector over public sector banks.

Raman and Marcus (2007) have studied the impact of Automation in Public sector Banks as per the reflections of bank customers and bank officials belong to Chennai region. Marcus (2006) studied the public sector banks with special reference to selected branches in Chennai city and the perception of customers due to inception of Information Technology in the banking sector. Customers vary in their perception on information technology. In reality, customers are not against for automation and IT inception. The main concern for them is the delay in transaction due to technical snag and the increased cost of operation due to automation. Most of the customers have accounts in the private sector banks and they are well informed about the new development and up gradation that is happening in those banks. The customers believe that crores of money is being spent by the banks in the name of developing software, training the staff in IT and in providing better ambience to keep abreast with the private banks, but the ultimate outcome of which is not noteworthy.The present study is based on the reflections of 674 bank customers of the public sector banks who have various types of bank accounts in the branches of Chennai city. Branches of public sector banks in Chennai city, consisting of 19 nationalized banks and State Bank of India with its 7 Associates were covered in the process. A wide range of customers through various domains of banking operations have been studied to identify their overall perception.

Purpose The evidence concerning the effects of the inflation targeting (IT) regime as well as greater central bank transparency on monetary policy interest rates is not conclusive, and the following questions remain open. What is the effect of adopting IT on both the level and volatility of monetary policy interest rate? Does central bank transparency affect the level of the monetary policy interest rate and its volatility? Are these effects greater in developing countries? The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the literature by answering these questions. Hence, the paper analyzes the effects of IT and central bank transparency on monetary policy. Design/methodology/approach The analysis uses a sample of 48 countries (31 developing) comprising the period between 1998 and 2014. Based on panel data methodology, estimates are made for the full sample, and then for the sample of developing countries. Findings Countries that adopt the IT regime tend to have lower levels of monetary policy interest rates, as well as lower interest rate volatility. The effect of adopting IT on both the level and volatility of the basic interest rate is smaller in developing countries. Besides, countries with more transparent central banks have lower levels of monetary policy interest rates, as well as lower interest rate volatility. In turn, the effect of central bank transparency on both the level and volatility of the basic interest rate is greater in developing countries. Practical implications The study brings important practical implications regarding the influence of both the IT regime and central bank transparency on monetary policy. Originality/value Studies have sought to analyze whether IT and central bank transparency are effective to control inflation. However, few studies analyze the influence of IT and central bank transparency on interest rates. This study differs from the few existing studies since: the analysis is done not only for the effect of transparency on the level of the monetary policy interest rate, but also on its volatility; the central bank transparency index that is used has never been utilized in this sort of analysis; and the study uses panel data methodology, and compares the results between different samples.
