AbstractDespite significant economic and environmental benefits, performance of warm mix asphalt (WMA) containing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) remains a matter of concern. Among the current WMA technologies, the plant foaming technique (called “foamed WMA” in this study) has gained the most attention, since it eliminates the need for chemical additives. In the present study, the laboratory performance, namely rutting and moisture-induced damage potential of foamed WMA containing RAP were evaluated and compared with those of similar hot mix asphalt (HMA) containing identical amount of RAP. Dynamic modulus, Hamburg wheel tracking (HWT) and flow number tests were performed to assess the rutting resistance of the mixes. Also, stripping inflection point from HWT tests and tensile strength ratio after AASHTO T 283 and moisture induced sensitivity test (MIST) conditioning were used to evaluate the moisture-induced damage of asphalt mixes. It was found that MIST conditioning effectively simulates the moisture-induced damage and can capture the propensity of asphalt mixes to moisture damage more distinctly compared to AASHTO T 283 method due to application of cyclic loadings. The foamed WMA was found to exhibit higher rutting and moisture-induced damage potential due to lower mixing and compaction temperatures compared to HMA. However, the increase in RAP content was found to reduce rutting and moisture-induced damage potential for WMA. Therefore, the lower stiffness of foamed WMA may be compensated with the addition of stiffer binder from RAP.

This study intended to use the Superpave® gyratory compactor (SGC) as a basis for estimating the stability of asphalt mixtures as a surrogate for proposed method for the simple performance test. Several asphalt mixtures were produced with varying aggregate sources, asphalt contents, and gradations. Every mixture was compacted with the SGC and evaluated with the repeated compression test procedure for rutting measurements recommended by NCHRP Project 9–19 and the AASHTO 2002 pavement design manual to evaluate whether the results from the SGC can be related to the rutting of mixtures. Densification curves produced by the SGC were used to determine the volumetric properties besides the calculation of the traffic densification index (TDI), which represents the densification experienced by traffic loading during pavement service life. The traffic force index (TFI) was also calculated with a special accessory added to the SGC during compaction (the pressure distributor analyzer). The TFI represents the work done by the traffic to densify the mixture. Results from the mixture rutting tests were used to estimate the flow number (FN). The FN, an important mixture property, is shown to have a strong correlation to the TFI. The TFI was also found to be strongly correlated with the TDI and gives an opportunity to estimate the mixture resistance to compaction forces with the use of its volumetric behavior. The main finding of the study is that the SGC appears to give information that can be used to characterize the stability of the mixtures. Such information could be used as an initial screening criterion to select mixtures for various traffic levels.

A detailed investigation of the effect of nozzle/needle diameter ratio, normal fuel area, swirler degree, air pressure, fuel pressure on flow number, cone angle and droplet size distribution of external mixing twin fluid atomizers is given in this paper. Forty atomizers have been constructed to prevent mutual effect of various parameters. Flow number and cone angle are found to increase with nozzle/diameter ratio, and to decrease with the increase of air pressure. Optimum fuel flow is obtained at swirler angle 30-deg, while cone angle increases with increase of swirler angle. Sauter mean diameter decreases with the increase of air pressure and decrease of fuel pressure. Suitable functions are derived for droplet size distribution, Sauter mean diameter, and flow number. They are suitable to predict the geometry of the atomizer and to be used also in a prediction model for the calculation of fuel concentration and heat release.

The spray characteristics of six simplex atomizers are examined in a pressure vessel using a standard light diffraction technique. Attention is focused on the effects of liquid properties, nozzle flow number, spray cone angle, and ambient air pressure on mean drop size and drop-size distribution. For all nozzles and all liquids it is found that continuous increase in air pressure above the normal atmospheric value causes the SMD to first increase up to a maximum value and then decline. An explanation for this characteristic is provided in terms of the measurement technique employed and the various competing influences on the overall atomization process. The basic effect of an increase in air pressure is to improve atomization, but this trend is opposed by contraction of the spray angle which reduces the relative velocity between the drops and the surrounding air, and also increases the possibility of droplet coalescence.
