Flow Investigation Around a V-Sector Ball Valve

Experimental and computational methods were used to study the structure and behavior of the shedded vortices around a V-ball valve. Strouhal frequency for shedded vortices around the valve over a range of operating conditions and flow rates using water as the medium were measured. The information gathered in this study would help to predict at what operating conditions pipe ruptures might occur. A dynamic pressure transducer was used to determine the Strouhal frequency. LDV was used to measure the mean velocity and turbulence magnitudes. FLUENT was used to develop a two dimensional fluid dynamics model. Flow was visualized using high-speed video photography. A dominant large three-dimensional vortex downstream of the valve was detected. The centerline of this vortex is a shadow of the valve lip. A fifth degree polynomial describing the relationship between the Strouhal number and Reynolds number is obtained.

Hydrodynamic journal bearings are essential components of high-speed machinery. In severe operating conditions, the thermal dissipation is not a negligible phenomenon. Therefore, a three-dimensional thermohydrodynamic (THD) analysis has been developed that includes lubricant rupture and re-formation phenomena by conserving the mass flowrate. Then, the predictions obtained with the proposed numerical model are validated by comparison with the measurements reported in the literature. The effects of various geometric factors (length, diameter and radial clearance) and operating conditions (rotational speed, applied load and lubricant) on the journal bearing behaviour are analysed and discussed in order to inform bearing designers. Thus, it can be predicted that the bearing performance obtained highly depends on operating conditions and geometric configuration.

Cutting is an effective device to reduce crosswind loads acting on trains. The cutting depth, width and gradient of slope are important factors for design and construction of cutting. Based on numerical analysis methods of three-dimensional viscous incompressible aerodynamics equations, aerodynamic side forces and yawing moments acting on the high-speed train, with different depths and widths of cutting,are calculated and analyzed under crosswinds,meanwhile the relationship of the gradient of cutting slope and transverse aerodynamic forces acting on trains are also studied. Simulation results show that aerodynamic side forces and yawing moments acting on the train(the first, middle and rear train)decrease with the increase of cutting depth. The relationship between transverse forces (moments) coefficients acting on the three sections and the cutting depth basically is the three cubed relation. The bigger is cutting width,the worse is running stability of train. The relationship between yawing moments coefficients acting each body of the train and the cutting width approximately is the three cubed relation. The transverse Aerodynamic forces decreased gradually with the increase of the gradient of cutting slope, the relationship between yawing moments coefficients acting each body of the train and the gradient of cutting slope basically is the four cubed relation.

A new generation electric high-speed train called Aerotrain has levitation wings and levitates under Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect along a U-shaped guideway. The previous study found that lacking knowledge of the design makes the prototype unable to regain stability when losing control. In this paper, the nonlinear three-dimensional dynamic model of the Aerotrain based on the rigid body model has been developed to investigate the relationship between the vehicle body design and its stability. Based on the dynamic model, this paper considered an Aerotrain with a horizontal tail and a vertical tail. To evaluate the stability, the location and area of these tails were parameterized. The effects of these parameters on the longitudinal and directional stability have been investigated to show that: the horizontal tail gives its best performance if the tail area is a function of the tail location; the larger vertical tail area and (or) the farther vertical tail location will give better directional stability. As for the lateral stability, a dihedral front levitation wing design was investigated. This design did not show its effectiveness, therefore a control system is needed. The obtained results are useful for the optimization studies on Aerotrain design as well as developing experimental prototypes.

The performance characteristics of the radial pump commonly used as a multistage (8 or 10 stage) pump have been investigated experimentally. Due to the complex three-dimensional geometries, the hydraulic performance of multistage pumps is closely related to the internal flows in diffuser and return vanes. In order to investigate the flow characteristics in these regions by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique, a transparent pump is designed. A 532 nm continuous laser and a high-speed camera are used as a light source and an image acquisition device, respectively. The velocity field information in a diffuser of the radial pump is successfully obtained by two-dimensional PIV measurements at various operating conditions.

In order to explore the relationship between the surface topography parameters and friction properties of a rough contact interface under fluid dynamic pressure lubrication conditions, friction experiments were carried out. The three-dimensional surface topography of specimens was measured and characterized with a profile microscopy measuring system and scanning electron microscope. The friction coefficient showed a trend of decreasing first and then increasing with the increase in some surface topography parameters at lower pressure, such as the surface height arithmetic mean Sa, surface height distribution kurtosis Sku, surface volume average volume Vvv, and surface center area average void volume Vvc, which are the ISO 25178 international standard parameters. The effects of surface topographic parameters on friction were analyzed and the wear mechanism of the worn surface was presented. The wear characteristics of the samples were mainly characterized as strain fatigue, grinding, and scraping. The results provide a theoretical basis for the functional characterization of surface topography.

This paper presents a study of stall inception mechanisms in a low-speed axial compressor. Previous work has identified two common flow breakdown sequences, the first associated with a short length-scale disturbance known as a “spike,” and the second with a longer length-scale disturbance known as a “modal oscillation.” In this paper the physical differences between these two mechanisms are illustrated with detailed measurements. Experimental results are also presented that relate the occurrence of the two stalling mechanisms to the operating conditions of the compressor. It is shown that the stability criteria for the two disturbances are different: Long length-scale disturbances are related to a two-dimensional instability of the whole compression system, while short length-scale disturbances indicate a three-dimensional breakdown of the flow-field associated with high rotor incidence angles. Based on the experimental measurements, a simple model is proposed that explains the type of stall inception pattern observed in a particular compressor. Measurements from a single-stage low-speed compressor and from a multistage high-speed compressor are presented in support of the model.

Identification of the axial thrust load during the operating conditions of a turbocharger provides useful information to turbocharger designers. The axial force acting on the thrust bearing is mainly caused by the imbalance between the turbine wheel and the compressor wheel. It has a significant influence on the friction losses, which reduce the efficiency and the performance of a high-speed turbocharger. Well-known formulae for calculating the thrust load and the mechanical friction have been given in the literature. However, it is difficult to determine an accurate axial force by an analytical approach. This paper presents a detailed procedure for prediction of the axial thrust load during turbocharger operation. The first step is to identify the relationship between the externally applied load and the strain response using a specially designed test device and a numerical method. Next, if the operating strains and temperatures are measured, the strain signals due to the axial thrust can be adjusted by subtracting the thermal effects from the measured strains. Finally, the thrust loads in particular operating conditions are inversely obtained by inserting the adjusted strains into the calibration equations.

Tilting-pad journal bearings (TPJBs) dominate as rotor supports in high-speed rotating machinery. The paper analyzes frequency effects on the TPJB’s stiffness and damping characteristics based on experimental and theoretical investigations. The experimental investigation has been carried out on a five pad tilting-pad journal bearing of 98mm in diameter. Time domain and multifrequency excitation has been used to evaluate the dynamic coefficients. The calculated results have been obtained from a three-dimensional computer model of TPJB, which accounts for thermal effects, turbulent oil flow, and elastic effects, including that of pad flexibility. The analyzes of the TPJB’s stiffness and damping properties showed that the frequency effects on the bearing dynamic properties depend on the operating conditions and bearing design. It has been concluded that the pad inertia and pivot flexibility are behind the variations of the stiffness and damping properties with frequency of excitation.

Recently, an asymmetric lift-offset compound helicopter has been conceptualized at the University of Maryland with the objective of improving the overall performance of a medium-lift utility helicopter. The investigated form of lift-compounding incorporates an additional stubbed wing attached to the fuselage on the retreating side. This design alleviates rotor lift requirements and generates a roll moment that enables increased thrust potential on the advancing side in high-speed forward flight. In this study, a numerical model was developed based on the corresponding experimental test case. Three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations were solved on overset grids with computational fluid dynamics–computational structural dynamics (CFD–CSD) coupling using the in-house CPU–GPU heterogeneous Mercury CFD framework. Simulations were performed at high-speed, high-thrust operating conditions and showed satisfactory agreement with the experimental measurements in terms of the cyclic control angles, rotor thrust, and torque values. CFD results indicated that for an advance ratio of 0.5 with a collective pitch of 10.6°, a vehicle lift-to-equivalent-drag ratio improvement of 47% was attainable using 11% wing-lift offset. The CFD-computed flow fields provide insights into the origin of a reverse flow entry vortex that was observed in particle image velocimetry data, and they characterize the wing–rotor interactional aerodynamics.
