A new generation electric high-speed train called Aerotrain has levitation wings and levitates under Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect along a U-shaped guideway. The previous study found that lacking knowledge of the design makes the prototype unable to regain stability when losing control. In this paper, the nonlinear three-dimensional dynamic model of the Aerotrain based on the rigid body model has been developed to investigate the relationship between the vehicle body design and its stability. Based on the dynamic model, this paper considered an Aerotrain with a horizontal tail and a vertical tail. To evaluate the stability, the location and area of these tails were parameterized. The effects of these parameters on the longitudinal and directional stability have been investigated to show that: the horizontal tail gives its best performance if the tail area is a function of the tail location; the larger vertical tail area and (or) the farther vertical tail location will give better directional stability. As for the lateral stability, a dihedral front levitation wing design was investigated. This design did not show its effectiveness, therefore a control system is needed. The obtained results are useful for the optimization studies on Aerotrain design as well as developing experimental prototypes.

The instabilities in a sinusoidally oscillating non-separated flow over smooth circular cylinders in the range of Keulegan–Carpenter numbers, K, from about 0.02 to 1 and Stokes numbers, β, from about 103 to 1.4 × 106 have been observed from inception to chaos using several high-speed imagers and laser-induced fluorescence. The instabilities ranged from small quasi-coherent structures, as in Stokes flow over a flat wall (Sarpkaya 1993), to three-dimensional spanwise perturbations because of the centrifugal forces induced by the curvature of the boundary layer (Taylor–Görtler instability). These gave rise to streamwise-oriented counter-rotating vortices or mushroom-shaped coherent structures as K approached the Kh values theoretically predicted by Hall (1984). Further increases in K for a given β led first to complex interactions between the coherent structures and then to chaotic motion. The mapping of the observations led to the delineation of four states of flow in the (K, β)-plane: stable, marginal, unstable, and chaotic.

Cutting is an effective device to reduce crosswind loads acting on trains. The cutting depth, width and gradient of slope are important factors for design and construction of cutting. Based on numerical analysis methods of three-dimensional viscous incompressible aerodynamics equations, aerodynamic side forces and yawing moments acting on the high-speed train, with different depths and widths of cutting,are calculated and analyzed under crosswinds,meanwhile the relationship of the gradient of cutting slope and transverse aerodynamic forces acting on trains are also studied. Simulation results show that aerodynamic side forces and yawing moments acting on the train(the first, middle and rear train)decrease with the increase of cutting depth. The relationship between transverse forces (moments) coefficients acting on the three sections and the cutting depth basically is the three cubed relation. The bigger is cutting width,the worse is running stability of train. The relationship between yawing moments coefficients acting each body of the train and the cutting width approximately is the three cubed relation. The transverse Aerodynamic forces decreased gradually with the increase of the gradient of cutting slope, the relationship between yawing moments coefficients acting each body of the train and the gradient of cutting slope basically is the four cubed relation.

This paper presents a study of stall inception mechanisms in a low-speed axial compressor. Previous work has identified two common flow breakdown sequences, the first associated with a short length-scale disturbance known as a “spike,” and the second with a longer length-scale disturbance known as a “modal oscillation.” In this paper the physical differences between these two mechanisms are illustrated with detailed measurements. Experimental results are also presented that relate the occurrence of the two stalling mechanisms to the operating conditions of the compressor. It is shown that the stability criteria for the two disturbances are different: Long length-scale disturbances are related to a two-dimensional instability of the whole compression system, while short length-scale disturbances indicate a three-dimensional breakdown of the flow-field associated with high rotor incidence angles. Based on the experimental measurements, a simple model is proposed that explains the type of stall inception pattern observed in a particular compressor. Measurements from a single-stage low-speed compressor and from a multistage high-speed compressor are presented in support of the model.

In this paper, a 3D dynamic model for the prediction of the stability lobes of high speed milling is presented, considering the combined flexibility of both tool and workpiece. The main aim is to avoid chatter vibrations on the finish milling of aeronautical parts, which include thin walls and thin floors. In this way the use of complex fixtures is eliminated. Hence, an accurate selection of both axial depth of cut and spindle speed can be accomplished. The model has been validated by means of a test device that simulates the behaviour of a thin floor.

By taking into account the regenerative chatter vibration, a nonlinear dynamics model for high speed ball-end milling is proposed. The effect of dynamic components of milling forces on chatter is analyzed. A method to predict the stability limits of high speed ball-end milling process is proposed and the stability lobes diagram is simulated. The comparison of experimental milling forces with the simulation results indicates the high accuracy of the model and the effectiveness of the simulation algorithms. The proposed method provides a theoretical instruction for parameters selection and optimization in milling processing.

This paper evaluates the stability of the single mass rotor with internal friction on damped, anisotropic supports. The paper shows under what conditions the rotor stability may be improved by an undamped support with anisotropic stiffness properties. A three dimensional model is presented to show the influence of rotor and support stiffness characteristics on stability. Curves are also presented on how support damping may also improve or even reduce rotor stability. An analog computer solution of the governing equations of motion is presented showing the shaft transient motion for various speed ranges, and also plots of the rotor steady state motion are given for various speeds up to and including the stability threshold. The analysis is used to explain many of the experimental observations of B. L. Newkirk concerning stability due to internal rotor friction.

Automotive conversion coatings consist of layers of materials that are chemically applied to the body structures of vehicles before painting to improve corrosion protection and paint adhesion. These coatings are a consequence of surface-based chemical reactions and are sandwiched between paint layers and the base metal; the chemical reactions involved distinctly classify conversion coatings from other coating technologies. Although the tri-cationic conversion coating bath chemistry that was developed around the end of the 20th century remains persistent, environmental, health, and cost issues favor a new generation of greener methods and materials such as zirconium. Environmental forces driving lightweight material selection during automobile body design are possibly more influential for transitioning to zirconium than the concerns regarding the body coating process. The chemistry involved in some conversion coatings processing has been known for over 100 years. However, recent advances in chemical processing, changes in the components used for vehicle body structures, environmental considerations and costs have prompted the automobile industry to embrace new conversion coatings technologies. These are discussed herein along with a historical perspective that has led to the use of current conversion coatings technologies. In addition, future directions for automobile body conversion coatings are discussed that may affect conversion coatings in the age of multi-material body structures.

Since early 2007, many ambitious DSC manufactures in Japan have paid special attention for built in digital effects, in order to create better quality of picture, such as: Face Detection, Smile Shutter Mode, Full frame CCD, Anti Shake system, Live View, CMOS sensor..., which were highly appreciated by many photo fans around the world, and created hot-selling record on favorite model. In fact, these fancy “Digital Technologies” could be standardized in selected new cameras right now. In late 2009, new artificial intelligence image chips such as: back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, 30x Optical Zoom (or more), Full HD Video, Sweep Panorama, Interchangeable Unit Camera System,Super High Speed ISO, Super Steady, Motion Remover.., have been promoted in new generation of camera. It could change not only the performance of new camera (DSC/DC) but to challenge the current DV market seriously, and may inspire new record-high selling again. In our experiment, we collect more than 300 cases from the telephone survey during Sep, 2010 and Dec, 2010. Total of 220 cases comply with the conditions. To probe mainly into the relationship between new generation DC Confidence level and 3 potential customers: Amateur Photographer (AP), Senior Photographer (SP), and college student (CS). That is the reason what we are probe into this highly competitively market with brilliant creative design, and hope to offer an objective suggestion for both industry and education administers.

Since the intake valve close timing (IVC) directly determines the amount of displacement backflow and the amount of fresh charge trapped in the cylinder, optimizing the IVC is important to improve the performance of the diesel engine. In this paper, the relationship between the IVC and the displacement backflow of the cylinder at the high-speed condition was studied by establishing a one-dimensional (1D) gas dynamic model of a single-cylinder diesel engine. The results show that the forward airflow mass of intake and the backflow increase as the IVC retards, and the airflow mass trapped in cylinder increases at first and then decreases. It is interesting to find that the backflow does not equal zero when the air mass trapped in cylinder is the largest, which is different from the traditional optimizing strategy on the IVC. That is to say, there exists a misalignment between the maximum-volume-efficiency IVC and the none-backflow IVC. To further verify this interesting misalignment, the airflow characteristics at the optimized IVC condition are studied by establishing a three-dimensional (3D) simulation. It is found that the appearance of backflow is a gradual process, and there exists an overall backflow when the engine volume efficiency reaches its maximum value. In addition, the misalignment is reduced as the mean valve-closing velocity increases. The misalignment equals to 0 only if the mean valve-closing velocity approaches infinity.
