A CFD Application to Optimize T-Shaped Fins: Comparisons to the Constructal Theory’s Results

The problem of heat removal in energetic processes represents a big challenge especially because of the enhanced requirements of the modern industry. The thermal exchange systems therefore have to guarantee better performances in correspondence to ever more severe dimensional constraints. This paper shows a numerical approach, based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, for the evaluation of the heat exchange performances of finned (straight fins) surfaces made of highly heat conductive material. The same geometric constraints assumed in a reference work were adopted. This research attempts to develop an easy-to-use method to face what was previously solved by the powerful approach of Bejan’s Constructal theory. The results obtained show a good agreement between CFD and the Constructal theory’s results, validating, therefore, the simplified approach proposed and encouraging its application to a broader variety of geometries.

Radioembolization (RE) is a valuable treatment for liver cancer. It consists of administering radioactive microspheres by an intra-arterially placed catheter with the aim of lodging these microspheres, which are driven by the bloodstream, in the tumoral bed. Even though it is a safe treatment, some radiation-induced complications may arise. In trying to detect or solve the possible incidences that cause nontarget irradiation, simulating the particle- hemodynamics in hepatic arteries during RE by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools has become a valuable approach. This paper reviews the parameters that influence the outcome of RE and that have been studied via numerical simulations. In this numerical approach, the outcome of RE is regarded as successful if particles reach the artery branches that feed tumor-bearing liver segments. Up to 10 parameters have been reviewed. The variation of each parameter actually alters the hemodynamic pattern in the vicinities of the catheter tip and locally alters the incorporation of the particles into the bloodstream. Therefore, in general, the local influences of these parameters should result in global differences in terms of particle distribution in the hepatic artery branches. However, it has been observed that under some (qualitatively described) appropriate conditions where particles align with blood streamlines, the local influence resulting from a variation of a given parameter vanishes and no global differences are observed. Furthermore, the increasing number of CFD studies on RE suggests that numerical simulations have become an invaluable research tool in the study of RE.

Flutter is an aeroelastic phenomenon that may cause severe damage to aircraft. Traditional flutter evaluation methods have many disadvantages (e.g., complex, costly and time-consuming) which could be overcome by ground flutter test technique. In this study, an unsteady aerodynamic model is obtained using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code according to the procedure of frequency domain aerodynamic calculation. Then, the genetic algorithm (GA) method is adopted to optimize interpolation points for both excitation and response. Furthermore, the minimum-state method is utilized for rational fitting so as to establish an aerodynamic model in time domain. The aerodynamic force is simulated through exciters and the precision of simulation is guaranteed by multi-input and multi-output robust controller. Finally, ground flutter simulation test system is employed to acquire the flutter boundary through response under a range of air speeds. A good agreement is observed for both velocity and frequency of flutter between the test and modeling results.

Air often flows into compressors with inlet prewhirl, because it will obtain a circumferential component of velocity via inlet distortion or swirl generators such as inlet guide vanes. A lot of research has shown that inlet prewhirl does influence the characteristics of components, but the change of the matching relation between the components caused by inlet prewhirl is still unclear. This paper investigates the influence of inlet prewhirl on the matching of the impeller and the diffuser and proposes a flow control method to cure mismatching. The approach combines steady three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations with theoretical analysis and modeling. The result shows that a compressor whose impeller and diffuser match well at zero prewhirl will go to mismatching at non-zero prewhirl. The diffuser throat gets too large to match the impeller at positive prewhirl and gets too small for matching at negative prewhirl. The choking mass flow of the impeller is more sensitive to inlet prewhirl than that of the diffuser, which is the main reason for the mismatching. To cure the mismatching via adjusting the diffuser vanes stagger angle, a one-dimensional method based on incidence matching has been proposed to yield a control schedule for adjusting the diffuser. The optimal stagger angle predicted by analytical method has good agreement with that predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The compressor is able to operate efficiently in a much broader flow range with the control schedule. The flow range, where the efficiency is above 80%, of the datum compressor and the compressor only employing inlet prewhirl and no control are just 25.3% and 31.8%, respectively. For the compressor following the control schedule, the flow range is improved up to 46.5%. This paper also provides the perspective of components matching to think about inlet distortion.

From the aspect of reducing the risk of crystallization on nozzle surface, a new design of nozzle protective cover was to solve the problem in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) urea injection system. The simulation calculation and experimental verification methods were used to compare different schemes. The results show that reducing the height of nozzle holder can reduce the vortex currents near nozzle surface and effectively reduce the risk of crystallization on the nozzle surface. It is proposed to install a protective cover in the nozzle holder under the scheme of reducing the height of nozzle holder, which can further eliminate the vortex. Simulation and test results demonstrate good agreement under the rated running condition. The scheme of adding a protective cover in the nozzle holder shows the least crystallization risk by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The crystallization cycle test shows that, after the height of nozzle holder is reduced, the risk of crystallization on the nozzle surface is reduced correspondingly. The addition of a protective cover in the nozzle holder solves the problem of crystallization on the nozzle surface, which provides a new method for anti-crystallization design.

Abstract This paper investigates the recirculating casing treatment (RCT) of a low total pressure ratio micro-compressor to achieve stall margin enhancement while minimizing the design point efficiency penalty. Three RCT injection and extraction configurations are studied, including combined slot-duct, ducts only, and slot only. The numerical approach is validated with a tested micro-compressor using RCT. A very good agreement is achieved between the predicted speedlines and the measured results. To minimize the design point efficiency loss, it is observed that the optimal location of extraction and injection is where the recirculated flow rate can be minimized at the design point. To maximize stall margin, extraction location should favor minimizing the tip blockage such as at the location where the tip flow separation of the baseline blade is fully developed. In addition, the slot configuration that generates pre-swirl to the upstream flow is beneficial to improve stall margin due to reduced incidence. The highest stall margin enhancement achieved is 9.49% with the slot geometry that has the extraction at the 62%C chordwise location, but has a design point efficiency loss of 1.9%. Overall, a small efficiency penalty of 0.6% at the design point is achieved for the final design with the stall margin increased by 6.2%.

A mixed experimental and numerical approach was undertaken in order to develop a data-based model of the flow-induced vibration levels attained in a piping system containing a 90° elbow. A closed water loop was used to provide unsteady flow data as well as wall pressure and vibration measurements. In parallel, the unsteady water flow through the elbow was computed using an incompressible Large-Eddy Simulation (LES). Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) were used in order to build a relationship between the flow properties and the resulting excitation. This relationship was then used to estimate the evolution of the spatially distributed loadings, which were finally applied to a finite element model of the piping structure. The results consisted of an estimation of the vibration levels. The estimated vibrations were then compared to measurements in order to validate the proposed modeling strategy.

Conventional heat transfer design methods for turbine airfoils use 2-D boundary layer codes (BLC) combined with empiricism. While such methods may be applicable in the mid span of an airfoil, they would not be very accurate near the end-walls and airfoil tip where the flow is very three-dimensional (3-D) and complex. In order to obtain accurate heat transfer predictions along the entire span of a turbine airfoil, 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) must be used. This paper describes the development of a CFD based design system to make heat transfer predictions. A 3-D, compressible, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes CFD solver with k-ω turbulence modeling was used. A wall integration approach was used for boundary layer prediction. First, the numerical approach was validated against a series of fundamental airfoil cases with available data. The comparisons were very favorable. Subsequently, it was applied to a real engine airfoil at typical design conditions. A discussion of the features of the airfoil heat transfer distribution is included.

As the first developmental step of the sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) in China, the pool-type China Experimental Fast Reactor (CEFR) is equipped with the openings and inter-wrapper space in the core, which act as an important part of the decay heat removal system. The accurate prediction of coolant flow in the reactor core calls for complete three-dimensional calculations. In the present study, an investigation of thermal-hydraulic behaviors in a 180° full core model similar to that of CEFR was carried out using commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. The actual geometries of the peripheral core baffle, fluid channels and narrow inter-wrapper gap were built up, and numerous subassemblies (SAs) were modeled as the porous medium with appropriate resistance and radial power distribution. First, the three-dimensional flow and temperature distributions in the full core under normal operating condition are obtained and quantitatively analyzed. And then the effect of inter-wrapper flow (IWF) on heat transfer performance is evaluated. In addition, the detailed flow path and direction in local inter-wrapper space including the internal and outlet regions are captured. This work can provide some valuable understanding of the core thermal-hydraulic phenomena for the research and design of SFRs.

During aerial missions of fuel-cell (FC) powered drones, the option of FC edge cooling may improve FC performance and durability. Here we describe an edge cooling approach for fixed-wing FC-powered drones by removing FC heat using the ambient air during flight. A set of experiments in a wind tunnel and numerical simulations were performed to examine the efficiency of FC edge cooling at various flight altitudes and cruise speeds. The experiments were used to validate the numerical model and prove the feasibility of the proposed method. The first simulation duplicated the geometry of the experimental setup and boundary conditions. The calculated temperatures of the stack were in good agreement with those of the experiments (within ±2 °C error). After validation, numerical models of a drone’s fuselage in ambient air with different radiator locations and at different flight speeds (10–30 m/s) and altitudes (up to 5 km) were examined. It was concluded that onboard FC edge cooling by ambient air may be applicable for velocities higher than 10 m/s. Despite the low pressure, density, and Cp of air at high altitudes, heat removal is significantly increased with altitude at all power and velocity conditions due to lower air temperature.

The paper presents the application of a coupling methodology between Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and System Thermal Hydraulic (STH) codes developed at the University of Pisa. The methodology was applied to the CIRCE-HERO facility in order to reproduce the recently performed experimental conditions simulating a Protected Loss Of Flow Accident (PLOFA). The facility consists of an internal loop, equipped with a fuel pin simulator and a steam generator, and an external pool. In this coupling application, the System code RELAP5 is adopted for the simulation of the internal loop while the CFD code ANSYS Fluent is used for the sake of simulating the pool. The connection between the two addressed domains is provided at the inlet and outlet section of the internal loop; a thermal coupling is also performed in order to reproduce the observed thermal stratification phenomenon. The obtained results are promising and a good agreement was obtained for both the mass flow rates and temperature measurements. Capabilities and limitations of the adopted coupling technique are discussed in the present paper also providing suggestions for improvements and developments to be achieved in the frame of future applications.
