Detailed measurements have been made of the transient stalling process in an axial compressor stage. The stage is of high hub-casing ratio and stall is initiated in the rotor. If the rotor tip clearance is small stall inception occurs at the hub, but at clearances typical for a multistage compressor the inception is at the tip. The crucial quantity in both cases is the blockage caused by the endwall boundary layer. Prior to stall, disturbances rotate around the inlet flow in sympathy with rotating variations in the endwall blockage; these can persist for some time prior to stall, rising and falling in amplitude before the final increase, which occurs as the compressor stalls.

Experimental investigations of the effect of inlet blade loading on the rotating stall inception process are carried out on a single-stage low-speed axial compressor. Temporal pressure signals from the six high response pressure transducers are used for the analysis. Pressure variations at the hub are especially recorded during the stall inception process. Inlet blade loading is altered by installing metallic meshed distortion screens at the rotor upstream. Three sets of experiments are performed for the comparison of results, i.e. uniform inlet flow, tip, and hub distortions, respectively. Regardless of the type of distortion introduced to the inflow, the compressor undergoes a performance drop, which is more severe in the hub distortion case. Under the uniform inlet flow condition, stall inception is caused by the modal type disturbance while the stall precursor switched to spike type due to the highly loaded blade tip. In the presence of high blade loading at the hub, spike disappeared and the compressor once again witnessed a modal type disturbance. Hub pressure fluctuations are observed throughout the process when the stall is caused by a modal wave while no disturbance is noticed at the hub in spike type stall inception. It is believed that the hub flow separation contributes to the modal type of stall inception phenomenon. Results are also supported by the recently developed signal processing techniques for the stall inception study.

An axial compressor end-wall boundary layer theory which requires the introduction of three-dimensional velocity profile models is described. The method is based on pitch-averaged boundary layer equations and contains blade force-defect terms for which a new expression in function of transverse momentum thickness is introduced. In presence of tip clearance a component of the defect force proportional to the clearance over blade height ratio is also introduced. In this way two constants enter the model. It is also shown that all three-dimensional velocity profile models present inherent limitations with regard to the range of boundary layer momentum thicknesses they are able to represent. Therefore a new heuristic velocity profile model is introduced, giving higher flexibility. The end-wall boundary layer calculation allows a correction of the efficiency due to end-wall losses as well as calculation of blockage. The two constants entering the model are calibrated and compared with experimental data allowing a good prediction of overall efficiency including clearance effects and aspect ratio. Besides, the method allows a prediction of radial distribution of velocities and flow angles including the end-wall region and examples are shown compared to experimental data.

Effects of axial casing grooves (ACGs) on the stall margin and efficiency of a one and a half stage low-speed axial compressor with a large rotor tip gap are investigated in detail. The primary focus of the current paper is to identify the flow mechanisms behind the changes in stall margin and on the efficiency of the compressor stage with a large rotor tip gap. Semicircular axial grooves installed in the rotor’s leading edge area are investigated. A large eddy simulation (LES) is applied to calculate the unsteady flow field in a compressor stage with ACGs. The calculated flow fields are first validated with previously reported flow visualizations and stereo PIV (SPIV) measurements. An in-depth examination of the calculated flow field indicates that the primary mechanism of the ACG is the prevention of full tip leakage vortex (TLV) formation when the rotor blade passes under the axial grooves periodically. The TLV is formed when the incoming main flow boundary layer collides with the tip clearance flow boundary layer coming from the opposite direction near the casing and rolls up around the rotor tip vortex. When the rotor passes directly under the axial groove, the tip clearance flow boundary layer on the casing moves into the ACGs and no roll-up of the incoming main flow boundary layer can occur. Consequently, the full TLV is not formed periodically as the rotor passes under the open casing of the axial grooves. Axial grooves prevent the formation of the full TLV. This periodic prevention of the full TLV generation is the main mechanism explaining how the ACGs extend the compressor stall margin by reducing the total blockage near the rotor tip area. Flows coming out from the front of the grooves affect the overall performance as it increases the flow incidence near the leading edge and the blade loading with the current ACGs. The primary flow mechanism of the ACGs is periodic prevention of the full TLV formation. Lower efficiency and reduced pressure rise at higher flow rates for the current casing groove configuration are due to additional mixing between the main passage flow and the flow from the grooves. At higher flow rates, blockage generation due to this additional mixing is larger than any removal of the flow blockage by the grooves. Furthermore, stronger double-leakage tip clearance flow is generated with this additional mixing with the ACGs at a higher flow rate than that of the smooth wall.

The present paper aims at evaluating the surveillance parameters used for early stall warning in axial compressors, and is based on unsteady pressure measurements at the casing of a single stage axial compressor. Two parameters—Correlation and Root Mean Square (RMS)—are first compared and their relative performances discussed. The influence of sensor locations (in both radial and axial directions) is then considered, and the role of the compressor’s geometrical irregularities in the behavior of the indicators is clearly highlighted. The influence of the throttling process is also carefully analyzed. This aspect of the experiment’s process appears to have a non-negligible impact on the stall warning parameters, despite being poorly documented in the literature. This last part of this research work allow us to get a different vision of the alert parameters compared to what is classically done in the literature, as the level of irregularity that is reflected by the magnitude of the parameters appears to be an image of a given flow rate value, and not a clear indicator of the stall inception.

A theoretical evaluation was conducted delineating how aeromechanical feedback control can be utilized to stabilize the inception of rotating stall in axial compressors. Ten aeromechanical control methodologies were quantitatively examined based on the analytical formulations presented in the first part of this paper (McGee et al, 2003a). The maximum operating range for each scheme is determined for optimized structural parameters, and the various schemes are compared. The present study shows that the most promising aeromechanical designs and controls for a class of low-speed axial compressors were the use of dynamic fluid injection. Aeromechanically incorporating variable duct geometries and dynamically re-staggered IGV and rotor blades were predicted to yield less controllability. The aeromechanical interaction of a flexible casing wall was predicted to be destabilizing, and thus should be avoided by designing sufficiently rigid structures to prevent casing ovalization or other structurally-induced variations in tip clearance. Control authority, a metric developed in the first part of this paper, provided a useful interpretation of the aeromechanical damping of the coupled system. The model predictions also show that higher spatial modes can become limiting with aeromechanical feedback, both in control of rotating stall as well as in considering the effects of lighter, less rigid structural aeroengine designs on compressor stability.

Abstract The axial compressors of power-generation gas turbines have a high stage count, blades with low aspect ratios and relatively large clearances in the rear section. These features promote the development of strong secondary flows. An important outcome deriving from the convection of intense secondary flows is the enhanced span-wise transport of fluid properties mainly involving the rear stages, generally referred to as “radial mixing”. An incorrect prediction of this key phenomenon may result in inaccurate performance evaluation and could mislead the designers during the compressor design phase. As shown in a previous work, in the rear stages of an axial compressor the stream-wise vorticity associated with tip clearance flows is one of the main drivers of the overall span-wise transport phenomenon. Limiting it by circumferentially averaging the flow at row interfaces is the reason why a steady-state analysis strongly under-predicts radial mixing. To properly forecast the span-wise transport within the flow-path, an unsteady analysis should be adopted. However, due to the high blade count, this approach has a computational cost not yet suitable for industrial purposes. Currently, only the steady-state full-compressor simulation can fit in a lean industrial design chain and any model upgrade improving its radial mixing prediction would be highly beneficial for the daily design practice. To attain some progresses in RANS model, its inherent lack of convection of stream-wise vorticity must be addressed. This can be done by acting on another mixing driver, able to provide the same outcome, that is turbulent diffusion. In particular, by enhancing turbulent viscosity one can promote span-wise diffusion, thus improving the radial mixing prediction of the steady approach. In this paper, this strategy to update the RANS model and its application in simulations on a compressor of the Ansaldo Energia fleet is presented, together with the model tuning that has been performed using the results of unsteady simulations as the target.

A detailed experimental investigation to understand and quantify the development of blockage in the flow field of a transonic, axial flow compressor rotor (NASA Rotor 37) has been undertaken. Detailed laser anemometer measurements were acquired upstream, within, and downstream of a transonic, axial compressor rotor operating at 100%, 85%, 80%, and 60% of design speed which provided inlet relative Mach numbers at the blade tip of 1.48, 1.26, 1.18, and 0.89 respectively. The impact of the shock on the blockage development, pertaining to both the shock / boundary layer interactions and the shock / tip clearance flow interactions, is discussed. The results indicate that for this rotor the blockage in the endwall region is 2–3 times that of the core flow region, and the blockage in the core flow region more than doubles when the shock strength is sufficient to separate the suction surface boundary layer.
