Trial for Monitoring the Water Temperature Utilizing the Frequency Dependence of Reflection Coefficient of Ultrasound Passing Through Thin Layer

This paper describes a new concept to monitor the temperature of water utilizing the acoustic resonance, which occurs when ultrasound passes through a thin layer. In the ultrasonic transmission system that comprises of the reflection plate, thin film, and water, the reflection coefficient of the ultrasound at the plate/film/water interface depends on the frequency and takes its minimum value at the resonant frequency. Notably, this is closely related to the acoustic impedance of the water; moreover, it is a known fact that the acoustic impedance of the water demonstrates temperature dependence. Against this background, the present study aims to develop a technique in order to monitor the temperature of water utilizing the aforementioned correlation between the reflection coefficient and water temperature. First, a theoretical model was developed to determine the acoustic impedance of water from the difference in the amplitude spectra of echoes reflected at the back of the plate in the cases both with and without the film. It was found that the ratio of the amplitude spectrum of the echo recorded in the case with the film to that in the case without the film clearly decreased with a drop in water temperature. From this, we obtained the equation for determining water temperature experimentally. Finally, the temperature of water, which was brought down by air or ice cooling, was monitored by the proposed method. It was found that the behavior of temperature determined by the proposed method was congruent with that which was measured by a thermocouple.

Within the ground penetrating radar bandwidth the medium is considered to be an ideal dielectric, which is not always true. Electromagnetic waves reflection coefficient conductivity dependence showed a significant role of the difference in conductivity in reflection strength. It was confirmed by physical modeling. Conductivity of geological media should be taken into account when solving direct and inverse problems, survey design planning, etc. Ground penetrating radar can be used to solve the problem of mapping of halocline or determine water contamination.

Abstract Ni(5 at.%Pt ) films were silicided at a temperature below 400 °C and at 550 °C. The two silicidation temperatures had produced different responses to the subsequent metal etch. Catastrophic removal of the silicide was seen with the low silicidation temperature, while the desired etch selectivity was achieved with the high silicidation temperature. The surface microstructures developed were characterized with TEM and Auger depth profiling. The data correlate with both silicidation temperatures and ultimately the difference in the response to the metal etch. With the high silicidation temperature, there existed a thin Si-oxide film that was close to the surface and embedded with particles which contain metals. This thin film is expected to contribute significantly to the desired etch selectivity. The formation of this layer is interpreted thermodynamically.

Myocardial edema formation, which has been shown to compromise cardiac function, and increased epicardial transudation (pericardial effusion) have been shown to occur after elevation of myocardial venous and lymphatic outflow pressures. The purposes of this study were to estimate the hydraulic conductance and osmotic reflection coefficient for the epicardium and to determine the effect of coronary sinus hypertension and cardiac lymphatic obstruction on epicardial fluid flux (JV,e/Ae). A Plexiglas hemispheric capsule was attached to the left ventricular epicardial surface of anesthetized dogs. JV,e/Ae was determined over 30-min periods for three intracapsular pressures (-5, -15, and -25 mmHg) and two intracapsular solutions exerting colloid osmotic pressures of 7.0 and 2.0 mmHg. Hydraulic conductance was estimated to be 3.7 +/- 0.5 microliters.h-1.cm-2.mmHg-1. An osmotic reflection coefficient of 0.9 was calculated from the difference in JV,e/Ae of 16.5 +/- 8.4 microliters.h-1.cm-2 between the two solutions. Graded coronary sinus hypertension induced a linear increase in JV,e/Ae, which was significantly greater in dogs without cardiac lymphatic occlusion than in those with occlusion.

The fatigue strength of TiAl intermetallic alloy coated with TiAlN film was studied in vacuum at 1073K using a SEM-servo testing machine. In addition, three kinds of TiAlN films were given by physical vapor deposition (1, 3, and 10μ m). The fatigue strength of 3μ m was highest. Also, the fatigue strength of 1μ m was lowest. From this result, existence of optimum film thickness was suggested because the difference of fatigue strength arose in each film thickness. The justification for existence of optimum film thickness is competition of 45-degree crack and 90-degree crack. The 45-degree crack is phenomenon seen in the thin film (1μ m), and is caused by plastic deformation of TiAl substrate. The 45-degree crack is the factor of the fatigue strength fall by the side of thin film. In contrast, the 90-degree crack is phenomenon in the thick film (10μ m), and is caused as result of reaction against load to film. The 90-degree crack is the factor of the fatigue strength fall by the side of thick film. In conclusion, the optimum film thickness can perform meso fracture control, and improves fatigue strength.

ABSTRACTThe mechanical properties of thin film materials are known to be different from those of bulk materials, which are generally overlooked in practice. The difference in mechanical properties can be misleading in the estimation of residual stress states in micro-gas sensors with multi-layer structures during manufacturing and in service.In this study the residual stress of each film layer in a micro-gas sensor was measured according to the five difference sets of film stacking structure used for the sensor. The Pt thin film layer was found to have the highest tensile residual stress, which may affect the reliability of the micro-gas sensor. For the Pt layer the changes in residual stress were measured as a function of processing variables and thermal cycling.

Sarcodidemnoides misakiense, Oka and Willey. Generic Characters.--Colony (or cormus) forming very thick lobose masses, laterally compressed; sessile, but not encrusting. Excurrent orifices placed on the tips of the knoll-like prominences. Ascidiozooids very numerous, not arranged in systems; branchial sac with four rows of stigmata; canal system complicated, differentiated into peripheral and central portions. Specific Characters.--Atrial apertures of Ascidiozooids simple pores without teeth or languet; spicules fairly abundant, extremely delicate, confined to a thin layer near surface of test. Test gelatinous, containing numerous bladder-cells, crystals, fusiform cells, and pigment concretions. Stomach of Ascidiozooids vertically placed; surface of attachment of colony narrower than the free portion. Colour, brilliant red. Habitat.--Moroiso, Japan, between the tide-marks. N.B.--Since the above was written I have seen for the first time the exhaustive work of Fernand Lahille, entitled ‘Recherches sur les Tuniciers des côtes de France,' Toulouse, 1890. Lahille devotes considerable attention to what have been spoken of above as tentacle-like processes of the larva, figures them in many larvæ, and gives an excellent figure of the metamorphosing larva of Styela glomerata. He gives an opinion as to their significance which I cannot entirely endorse in the light of my own researches on the "Postembryonic development of Styela," commenced last August at Plymouth. However, I hope to return to this question on a future occasion. Lahille raises an objection to von Drasche's genus Didemnoides on the ground that the thickness of the cormus is not an anatomical character, and that the distinction between thick and thin colonies is a purely subjective one. There is no doubt some truth in this; but the difference between a compound Ascidian which possesses, say, a very few spicules, and one which possesses none at all, would appear to be no more fundamental than that between a colony whose mode of growth resulted in the production of a fleshy mass and one which grew in the form of a thin leathery crust. As stated above, von Drasche intends by Didemnoides a fleshy form of Leptoclinum, the test containing spicules, and the Ascidiozooids having four rows of stigmata in the branchial sac. Lahille, on the contrary,applies the name Didemnoides to those Didemnidse which are characterised by the absence of spicules, and the possession of three rows of stigmata in the branchial sac. The compound Ascidian which we have described above has spicules in the test, and four rows of stigmata in the branchial sac. But as it would be too absurd to call the new form "Sarcoleptoclinum," we shall persist in regarding the genus Didemnoides from the point of view of von Drasche.--A. W.

abstract The amplitude spectrum obtained from Haskell's matrix formulation for body waves travelling through a horizontally layered crustal model shows a sequence of minima and maxima. It is known that multiple reflections within the crustal layers produce constructive and destructive interferences, which are shown as maxima and minima in the amplitude spectrum. Analysis of the minima in the amplitude spectra, which correspond to zero phase in the phase spectra, enables us to determine the thickness of the crust, provided the ratio of wave velocity in the crust to velocity under the Moho is known.

The present study was planned to characterize the microclimate experienced by Aedes larvae in different breeding habitats by determining the temperature variations in water kept in containers during different months under natural conditions. The study was conducted in three municipal zones of Delhi. In each site, four types of container material (plastic, cement, iron and ceramic) were chosen for recording the water temperature in the containers. Daily air and water temperatures (mean, maximum and minimum values) recorded by HOBO and Tidbit data loggers, respectively, were compared using analysis of variance and Tukey’s honest significant difference (HSD) tests. Mean monthly temperature of water varied from 16.9 to 33.0 °C in tin containers, 17.3 to 35.6°C in plastic containers, 14.3 to 28.5°C in ceramic pots, 23.3 to 30.4°C in cemented underground tanks (UGT) and 15.8 to 35.1°C in cemented overhead tanks (OHTs). Corresponding values for the air temperature ranged from 17.7 to 36.1°C. The difference between temperature of water in the containers and air temperature was highest for ceramic pots. Daily mean, maximum and minimum temperatures recorded by different data loggers differed significantly (P<0.05). When Tukey HSD test was applied for data analysis, the daily mean air temperature differed significantly from the water temperature in tin and ceramic pots as well as cemented OHTs. The temperature of water in the different breeding habitats investigated was lower than the air temperature. Moreover, actual air temperature as recorded by HOBO was higher than the temperature recorded by local weather stations. Considering the ongoing climate change, cemented UGT and earthen pots may be more productive breeding habitats for the Aedes mosquito in the near future, while plastic and cemented OHTs might no longer be suitable for Aedes breeding.
