The overall surface averaged heat transfer was determined for air passing through arras of small diameter holes drilled at 90 through thin metal walls. The influence of the number of holes and hence of the pitch to diameter ratio, X/D, was investigated over the range 4.7 to 21 for a fixed hole size of 1.4 mm and hole L/D of 4.5. A transient cooling technique was used to determine the overall heat transfer coefficient for the cooling due to the air passage through the wall. It was shown that the dominant heat transfer was that on the hole approach surface area due to flow acceleration into the hole. The hole approach surface area was used in the heat transfer correlation. The results of the authors were combined with previous results for the variation of X/D at constant X to give a heat transfer correlation, independent of L/D.

The overall surface averaged heat transfer was determined for air passing through arrays of small diameter holes drilled at 90° through thin metal walls. The influence of the wall metal thickness, L, was investigated for a range of hole diameters, D, and pitch, X. L/D was varied from 0.43 to 8.3 using 13 different test geometries. It was found that although the influence of L/D was significant, there was only a ±20% data scatter on a correlation of the results that ignored the influence of L/D for 0.8<L/D<10. The results showed that the heat transfer was dominated by the hole approach flow and this surface area Ax was the appropriate heat transfer area for the determination of the heat transfer coefficient. The dominant parameters that affected the heat transfer were G and X/D. An improved correlation for a range of L/D was achieved if the heat transfer surface area was taken as the sum of Ax and Ah, the hole internal surface area.

Progress in the computing power available for CFD predictions now means that full geometry, 3 dimensional predictions are now routinely used in internal cooling system design. This paper reports recent work at Rolls-Royce which has compared the flow and htc predictions in a modern HP turbine cooling system to experiments. The triple pass cooling system includes film cooling vents and inclined ribs. The high resolution heat transfer experiments show that different cooling performance features are predicted with different levels of fidelity by the CFD. The research also revealed the sensitivity of the prediction to accurate modelling of the film cooling hole discharge coefficients and a detailed comparison of the authors’ computer predictions to data available in the literature is reported. Mixed bulk temperature is frequently used in the determination of heat transfer coefficient from experimental data. The current CFD data is used to compare the mixed bulk temperature to the duct centreline temperature. The latter is measured experimentally and the effect of the difference between mixed bulk and centreline temperature is considered in detail.

Abstract Ceramic matrix composite (CMC) parts create the opportunity for increased turbine entry temperatures within gas turbines. To achieve the highest temperatures possible, film cooling will play an important role in allowing turbine entry temperatures to exceed acceptable surface temperatures for CMC components, just as it does for the current generation of gas turbine components. Film cooling over a CMC surface introduces new challenges including roughness features downstream of the cooling holes and changes to the hole exit due to uneven surface topography. To better understand these impacts, this study presents flowfield and adiabatic effectiveness CFD for a 7-7-7 shaped film cooling hole at two CMC weave orientations. The CMC surface selected is a 5 Harness Satin weave pattern that is examined at two different orientations. To understand the ability of steady RANS to predict flow and convective heat transfer over a CMC surface, the weave surface is initially simulated without film and compared to previous experimental results. The simulation of the weave orientation of 0°, with fewer features projecting into the flow, matches fairly well to the experiment, and demonstrates a minimal impact on film cooling leading to only slightly lower adiabatic effectiveness compared to a smooth surface. However, the simulation of the 90° orientation with a large number of protruding features does not match the experimentally observed surface heat transfer. The additional protruding surface produces degraded film cooling performance at low blowing ratios but is less sensitive to blowing ratio, leading to improved relative performance at higher blowing ratios, particularly in regions far downstream of the hole.

Numerical computations were conducted to simulate flyash deposition experiments on gas turbine disk samples with internal impingement and film cooling using a CFD code (FLUENT). The standard k-ω turbulence model and RANS were employed to compute the flow field and heat transfer. The boundary conditions were specified to be in agreement with the conditions measured in experiments performed in the BYU Turbine Accelerated Deposition Facility (TADF). A Lagrangian particle method was utilized to predict the ash particulate deposition. User-defined subroutines were linked with FLUENT to build the deposition model. The model includes particle sticking/rebounding and particle detachment, which are applied to the interaction of particles with the impinged wall surface to describe the particle behavior. Conjugate heat transfer calculations were performed to determine the temperature distribution and heat transfer coefficient in the region close to the film-cooling hole and in the regions further downstream of a row of film-cooling holes. Computational and experimental results were compared to understand the effect of film hole spacing, hole size and TBC on surface heat transfer. Calculated capture efficiencies compare well with experimental results.

A study of flow in two stationary models of two-pass internal coolant passages is presented, which focuses on the heat transfer characteristics in the two-pass coolant channel. Heat transfer measurements were made with a transient technique using thermochromic liquid crystal technique to measure a surface temperature. The technique allows full surface heat transfer coefficient measurements on all the walls. The coolant passage model consisted of two square passages, each having a 20 hydraulic diameter length, separated by a rounded-tip web of 0.2 passage widths, and connected by a sharp 180 deg bend with a rectangular outer wall. Ribs were mounted on the bottom and top walls of both legs, with a staggered arrangement, and at 45 deg to the flow. The rib height and spacing were 0.1 and 1.0 passage heights, respectively. The measurements were obtained for Reynolds numbers of 25000, 50000 and 70000. One geometry is equipped with extraction holes to simulate holes for film cooling. Two series of holes are placed solely in the bottom wall, 4 holes are located in the bend, and 12 in the downstream leg. The global extraction through the holes was set to 30%, 40% and 50% of the inlet massflow. This paper presents new measurements of the heat transfer in the straight legs, and in the bend of the passage. It shows the influence of Reynolds number and extraction on full surface measurements and area averaged results.

Film cooling plays a critical role in providing effective thermal protection to components in modern gas turbine engines. A significant effort has been undertaken over the last 40 years to improve the distribution of coolant and to ensure that the airfoil is protected by this coolant from the hot gases in the freestream. This film, under conditions with high fuel-air ratios, may actually be detrimental to the underlying metal. The presence of unburned fuel from an upstream combustor may interact with this oxygen rich film coolant jet resulting in secondary combustion. The completion of the reactions can increase the gas temperature locally resulting in higher heat transfer to the airfoil directly along the path line of the film coolant jet. This secondary combustion could damage the turbine blade, resulting in costly repair, reduction in turbine life, or even engine failure. However, knowledge of film cooling in a reactive flow is very limited. The current study explores the interaction of cooling flow from typical cooling holes with the exhaust of a fuel-rich well-stirred reactor operating at high temperatures over a flat plate. Surface temperatures, heat flux, and heat transfer coefficients are calculated for a variety of reactor fuel-to-air ratios, cooling hole geometries, and blowing ratios. Emphasis is placed on the difference between a normal cylindrical hole, an inclined cylindrical hole, and a fan-shaped cooling hole. When both air and nitrogen are injected through the cooling holes, the changes in surface temperature can be directly correlated with the presence of the reaction. Photographs of the localized burning are presented to verify the extent and locations of the reaction.

Effects of embedded longitudinal vortices on heat transfer in turbulent boundary layers with injection from a single film-cooling hole are described. These results were obtained at a free-stream velocity of 10 m/s, with a film-cooling hole inclined 30 deg to the horizontal and a blowing ratio of about 0.50. The ratio of vortex core diameter to injection hole diameter was 1.58, and the ratio of circulation to injection velocity time hole diameter was about 3.16. Coolant distributions and spatially resolved heat transfer measurements indicate that injection hole centerlines must be at least 2.9–3.4 vortex core diameters away from the vortex center in the lateral direction to avoid significant alterations to wall heat transfer and distributions of film coolant. Under these circumstances, protection from film cooling is evident at least up to 55 hole diameters downstream of injection. When the injection hole is closer to the vortex center, secondary flows convect most injectant into the vortex upwash and thermal protection from film cooling is destroyed for streamwise locations from the injection hole greater than 17.5 hole diameters.
