An Experimental and Computational Parametric Investigation of Flow Conditions in Intersecting Circular Passages

In some industrial applications such as turbine airfoil film cooling, coolant passage configurations must maintain sufficient pressure margin to prevent hot gas ingestion whilst using holes of large enough diameter to avoid foreign object blockage. This frequently means that some regions of a film-cooled surface are provided with excess air, or that exhausting film jets are over-blown, adversely amplifying local mixing or coolant separation and therefore enhancing heat flux. A cooling system featuring intersecting passages would allow a high pressure margin to be obtained using discrete, localized loss mechanisms where flows intersect. The degree of loss could be tailored to the local internal and external flow conditions by altering the intersection extent (i.e. the degree of intersecting passage offset), thereby optimizing the use of coolant. Furthermore, localized in-passage convective heat transfer enhancements caused by thin boundary layers and impinging flows in the vicinity of the intersections would improve total heat flux (Watts per square meter) despite surface area lost to intersection voids. As the heat transfer and loss enhancements do not rely on intricately manufactured flow features, the cooling performance is likely to be robust in industrial applications, extending component life. An experimental and computational investigation of the flow through two intersecting cylindrical pipes has been carried out at turbine engine-representative conditions to test these hypotheses. While previous workers have characterized loss and heat transfer in co-planar intersecting holes, this first-of-a-kind study parametrically investigates both fully and partially-intersecting passages, accounting for passage offsets due to typical manufacturing tolerances or purpose-built localized loss enhancements. The loss coefficient across the intersection has been experimentally determined for a range of intersection angles and degrees of intersection in a large scale model running at near atmospheric conditions. The results are used to develop an empirical correlation for the loss coefficient for the isolated intersecting circular channel. A commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT©, has been used to model heat transfer locally within selected intersecting geometries, and thus to examine the average heat transfer coefficient compared to that predicted by the well-known Dittus-Boelter correlation and other investigators. Insight gained from the CFD predictions enables a first-order estimate of the impact of adding intersections to the convective cooling performance of these advanced cooling configurations. Results show that even an imperfectly machined (i.e. partial) intersection can provide a significant improvement to heat transfer as well as enhanced loss.

Impinging jet cooling technique has been widely used extensively in various industrial processes, namely, cooling and drying of films and papers, processing of metals and glasses, cooling of gas turbine blades and most recently cooling of various components of electronic devices. Due to high heat removal rate the jet impingement cooling of the hot surfaces is being used in nuclear industries. During the loss of coolant accidents (LOCA) in nuclear power plant, an emergency core cooling system (ECCS) cool the cluster of clad tubes using consisting of fuel rods. Controlled cooling, as an important procedure of thermal-mechanical control processing technology, is helpful to improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of steel. In industries for heat transfer efficiency and homogeneous cooling performance which usually requires a jet impingement with improved heat transfer capacity and controllability. It provides better cooling in comparison to air. Rapid quenching by water jet, sometimes, may lead to formation of cracks and poor ductility to the quenched surface. Spray and mist jet impingement offers an alternative method to uncontrolled rapid cooling, particularly in steel and electronics industries. Mist jet impingement cooling of downward facing hot surface has not been extensively studied in the literature. The present experimental study analyzes the heat transfer characteristics a 0.15mm thick hot horizontal stainless steel (SS-304) foil using Internal mixing full cone (spray angle 20 deg) mist nozzle from the bottom side. Experiments have been performed for the varied range of water pressure (0.7–4.0 bar) and air pressure (0.4–5.8 bar). The effect of water and air inlet pressures, on the surface heat flux has been examined in this study. The maximum surface heat flux is achieved at stagnation point and is not affected by the change in nozzle to plate distance, Air and Water flow rates.

Advance of an electronic technology has caused the increase of heat generation density for semiconductors densely integrated. Thermal management becomes more important, and a cooling system for high heat flux is required. It is extremely effective to such a demand using flow boiling heat transfer because of its high heat removal ability. To develop the cooling system for a large area at high heat flux, the cold plate structure of narrow channels with auxiliary unheated channel for additional liquid supply was devised and confirmed its validity by experiments. A large surface of 150mm in heated length and 30mm in width with grooves of an apex angle of 90 deg, 0.5mm depth and 1mm in pitch was employed. A structure of narrow rectangular heated channel between parallel plates with an unheated auxiliary channel was employed and the heat transfer characteristics were examined by using water for different combinations of gap sizes and volumetric flow rates. Five different liquid distribution modes were tested and their data were compared. The values of CHF larger than 1.9×106W/m2 for gap size of 2mm under mass velocity based on total volumetric flow rate and on the cross section area of main heated channel 720kg/m2s or 1.7×106W/m2 for gap size of 5mm under 290kg/m2s were obtained under total volumetric flow rate 4.5×10−5m3/s regardless of the liquid distribution modes. Under several conditions, the extensions of dry-patches were observed at the upstream location of the main heated channel resulting burnout not at the downstream but at the upstream. High values of CHF larger than 2×106W/m2 were obtained only for gap size of 2mm. The result indicates that higher mass velocity in the main heated channel is more effective for the increase in CHF. It was clarified that there is optimum flow rate distribution to obtain the highest values of CHF. For gap size of 2mm, high heat transfer coefficient as much as 7.4×104W/m2K were obtained at heat flux 1.5×106W/m2 under mass velocity 720kg/m2s based on total volumetric flow rate and on the cross section area of main heated channel. Also to obtain high heat transfer coefficient, it is more useful to supply the cooling liquid from the auxiliary unheated channel for additional liquid supply in the transverse direction perpendicular to the flow in the main heated channel.

The thermal management of aero gas turbine engine combustion systems commonly employs effusion-cooling in combination with various cold-side convective cooling schemes. The combustor liner incorporates many small holes which are usually set in staggered arrays and at a shallow angle to the cooled surface; relatively cold compressor delivery air is then allowed to flow through these holes to provide the full-coverage film-cooling effect. The efficient design of such systems requires robust correlations of film-cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient at a range of aero-thermal conditions, and the use of appropriately validated computational models. However, the flow conditions within a combustor are characterised by particularly high turbulence levels and relatively large length scales. The experimental evidence for performance of effusion-cooling under such flow conditions is currently sparse. The work reported here is aimed at quantifying typical effusion-cooling performance at a range of combustor relevant free-stream conditions (high turbulence), and also to assess the importance of modeling the coolant to free-stream density ratio. Details of a new laboratory wind-tunnel facility for the investigation of film-cooling at high turbulence levels are reported. For a typical combustor effusion geometry that uses cylindrical holes, spatially resolved measurements of adiabatic effectiveness, heat transfer coefficient and net heat flux reduction are presented for a range of blowing ratios (0.48 to 2), free-stream turbulence conditions (4 and 22%) and density ratios (0.97 and 1.47). The measurements reveal that elevated free-stream turbulence impacts on both the adiabatic effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient, although this is dependent upon the blowing ratio being employed and particularly the extent to which the coolant jets detach from the surface. At low blowing ratios the presence of high turbulence levels causes increased lateral spreading of the coolant adjacent to the injection points, but more rapid degradation in the downstream direction. At high blowing ratios, high turbulence levels cause a modest increase in effectiveness due to turbulent transport of the detached coolant fluid. Additionally, the augmentation of heat transfer coefficient caused by the coolant injection is seen to be increased at high free-stream turbulence levels.

In this paper we reported an advanced structure, the Piranha Pin Fin (PPF), for microchannel flow boiling. Fluid flow and heat transfer performance were evaluated in detail with HFE7000 as working fluid. Surface temperature, pressure drop, heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux (CHF) were experimentally obtained and discussed. Furthermore, microchannels with different PPF geometrical configurations were investigated. At the same time, tests for different flow conditions were conducted and analyzed. It turned out that microchannel with PPF can realize high-heat flux dissipation with reasonable pressure drop. Both flow conditions and PPF configuration played important roles for both fluid flow and heat transfer performance. This study provided useful reference for further PPF design in microchannel for flow boiling.

In an attempt to investigate the acoustic resonance effect of serpentine passages on internal convection heat transfer, the present work examines a typical high pressure turbine blade internal cooling system, based on the geometry of the NASA E3 engine. In order to identify the associated dominant acoustic characteristics, a numerical FEM simulation (two-step frequency domain analysis) is conducted to solve the Helmholtz equation with and without source terms. Mode shapes of the relevant identified eigenfrequencies (in the 0–20kHz range) are studied with respect to induced standing sound wave patterns and the local node/antinode distributions. It is observed that despite the complexity of engine geometries, as a first order approximation, the predominant resonance behavior can be modeled by a same-ended straight duct. Therefore, capturing the physics observed in a generic geometry, the heat transfer ramifications are experimentally investigated in a scaled wind tunnel facility at a representative resonance condition. Focusing on the straight cooling channel’s longitudinal eigenmode in the presence of an isolated rib element, the impact of standing sound waves on convective heat transfer and aerodynamic losses are demonstrated by liquid crystal thermometry, local static pressure and sound level measurements. The findings indicate a pronounced heat transfer influence in the rib wake separation region, without a higher pressure drop penalty. This highlights the potential of modulating the aero-thermal performance of the system via acoustic resonance mode excitations.

Turbine generator operates with complex cooling system due to the challenge in controlling the peak temperature of the stator bar caused by ohm loss, which is unavoidable. Therefore, it is important to characterise and quantifies the thermal performance of the cooling system. The focus of the present research is to investigate the heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics of typical cooling system, so-called stator ventilation duct. A real scale model was built at its operating conditions for the present study. The direction of cooling air is varied to consider its operation condition, so that there are (1) outward flow and (2) inward flow cases. In addition, the effect of (3) cross flow (inward with cross flow case) is also studied. The transient heat transfer method using thermochromic liquid crystals is implemented to measure full surface heat transfer distribution. A series of Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis is also conducted to support the observation from the experiment. For the inward flow case, the results suggest that the average Nusselt number of the 2nd duct is about 30% higher than the 3rd duct. The trend is similar with the effect of cross flow. The CFD results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Modern lean burn combustors now employ aggressive swirlers to enhance fuel-air mixing and improve flame stability. The flow at combustor exit can therefore have high residual swirl. A good deal of research concerning the flow within the combustor is available in open literature. The impact of swirl on the aerodynamic and heat transfer characteristics of an HP turbine stage is not well understood, however. A combustor swirl simulator has been designed and commissioned in the Oxford Turbine Research Facility (OTRF), previously located at QinetiQ, Farnborough UK. The swirl simulator is capable of generating an engine-representative combustor exit swirl pattern. At the turbine inlet plane, yaw and pitch angles of over ±40 deg have been simulated. The turbine research facility used for the study is an engine scale, short duration, rotating transonic turbine, in which the nondimensional parameters for aerodynamics and heat transfer are matched to engine conditions. The research turbine was the unshrouded MT1 design. By design, the center of the vortex from the swirl simulator can be clocked to any circumferential position with respect to HP vane, and the vortex-to-vane count ratio is 1:2. For the current investigation, the clocking position was such that the vortex center was aligned with the vane leading edge (every second vane). Both the aligned vane and the adjacent vane were characterized. This paper presents measurements of HP vane surface and end wall heat transfer for the two vane positions. The results are compared with measurements conducted without swirl. The vane surface pressure distributions are also presented. The experimental measurements are compared with full-stage three-dimensional unsteady numerical predictions obtained using the Rolls Royce in-house code Hydra. The aerodynamic and heat transfer characterization presented in this paper is the first of its kind, and it is hoped to give some insight into the significant changes in the vane flow and heat transfer that occur in the current generation of low NOx combustors. The findings not only have implications for the vane aerodynamic design, but also for the cooling system design.

Abstract Nozzle guide vane platforms often employ complex cooling schemes to mitigate ever-increasing thermal loads on endwall. Understanding the impact of advanced cooling schemes amid the highly complex three-dimensional secondary flow is vital to engine efficiency and durability. This study analyzes and describes the effect of coolant to mainstream blowing ratio, momentum ratio and density ratio for a typical axisymmetric converging nozzle guide vane platform with an upstream doublet staggered, steep-injection, cylindrical hole jet purge cooling scheme. Nominal flow conditions were engine representative and as follows: Maexit = 0.85, Reexit/Cax = 1.5 × 106 and an inlet large-scale freestream turbulence intensity of 16%. Two blowing ratios were investigated, each corresponding to upper and lower engine extrema at M = 3.5 and 2.5, respectively. For each blowing ratio, the coolant to mainstream density ratio was varied between DR = 1.2, representing typical experimental neglect of coolant density, and DR = 1.95, representative of typical engine conditions. An optimal coolant momentum ratio between = 6.3 and 10.2 is identified for in-passage film effectiveness and net heat flux reduction, at which the coolant suppresses and overcomes secondary flows but imparts minimal turbulence and remains attached to endwall. Progression beyond this point leads to cooling effectiveness degradation and increased endwall heat flux. Endwall heat transfer does not scale well with one single parameter; increasing with increasing mass flux for the low density case but decreasing with increasing mass flux of high density coolant. From the results gathered, both coolant to mainstream density ratio and blowing ratio should be considered for accurate testing, analysis and prediction of purge jet cooling scheme performance.

The study focuses on the aggregation kinematics in the quadratic convective magneto-hydrodynamics of ethylene glycol-titania ([Formula: see text]) nanofluid flowing through an inclined flat plate. The modified Krieger-Dougherty and Maxwell-Bruggeman models are used for the effective viscosity and thermal conductivity to account for the aggregation aspect. The effects of an exponential space-dependent heat source and thermal radiation are incorporated. The impact of pertinent parameters on the heat transfer coefficient is explored by using the Response Surface Methodology and Sensitivity Analysis. The effects of several parameters on the skin friction and heat transfer coefficient at the plate are displayed via surface graphs. The velocity and thermal profiles are compared for two physical scenarios: flow over a vertical plate and flow over an inclined plate. The nonlinear problem is solved using the Runge–Kutta-based shooting technique. It was found that the velocity profile significantly decreased as the inclination of the plate increased on the other hand the temperature profile improved. The heat transfer coefficient decreased due to the increase in the Hartmann number. The exponential heat source has a decreasing effect on the heat flux and the angle of inclination is more sensitive to the heat transfer coefficient than other variables. Further, when radiation is incremented, the sensitivity of the heat flux toward the inclination angle augments at the rate 0.5094% and the sensitivity toward the exponential heat source augments at the rate 0.0925%. In addition, 41.1388% decrement in wall shear stress is observed when the plate inclination is incremented from [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text].

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to carry out an in-depth analysis of heat dissipation performance by natural convection phenomenon inside light-emitting diode (LED) lamps containing hot pin-fins because of its significant industrial applications. Design/methodology/approach The problem is assimilated to heat transfer inside air-filled rectangular cavity with various governing parameters appraised in ranges interesting engineering application and scientific research. The lattice Boltzmann method is used to predict the dynamic and thermal behaviors. Effects of monitoring parameters such as Rayleigh number Ra (103-106), fin length (0-0.25) and its position, pin-fins number (1-8), the tilting-angle (0-180°) and cavity aspect ratio Ar (0.25-4) are carried out. Findings The rising behaviors of the dynamic and thermal structures and heat transfer rate (Nu), the heatlines distribution and the irreversibility rate are appraised. It was found that the flow is constantly two contra-rotating symmetric cells. The heat transfer is almost doubled by increasing Ra. A lack of cooling performance was identified between Ar = 0.5 and 0.75. The inclination 45° is the most appropriate cooling case. At constant Ra, the maximum stream-function and the global entropy generation remain almost unchanged by increasing the pin number from 1 to 8 and the entropy generation is of thermal origin for low Ra, so that the fluid friction irreversibility becomes dominant for Ra larger than 105. Research limitations/implications Improvements may include three-dimensional complex geometries, accounting for thermal radiation, high unit power and turbulence modelling. Such factors effects will be conducted in the future. Practical implications The cooling performance/heat dissipation in LED lamps is a key manufacturing factors, which determines the lifetime of the electronic components. The best design and installation give the opportunity to increase further the product shelf-life. Originality/value Both cooling performance, irreversibility rate and enclosure configuration (aspect ratio and inclination) are taken into account. This cooling scheme will give a superior operating mode of the hot components in an era where energy harvesting, storage and consumption is met with considerable attention in the worldwide.
