The Effect of Reynolds and Mach Number on End-Wall Profiling Performance

This paper shows an experimental back-to-back comparison carried out between two annular cascades of identical turbine airfoils operating at the same flow conditions; one of them had axysimmetric endwalls and, the other, non-axysimmetric. The annular cascades consisted of 100 high lift, high aspect ratio and high turning blades that are characteristic of modern low pressure (LP) turbines. Upstream and downstream data were obtained with miniature pneumatic probes. The static pressure fields on the airfoil surface and the end-walls were measured with more than 200 sensors. The motivation of this work is to improve the understanding of profiled end-wall performance in the following three aspects: A. Explore the performance of profiled non-axysimmetric end-walls at off design conditions, namely its sensitivity to Reynolds and Mach numbers, analyzing how the turbine characteristics are modified. For that purpose, the experiment was carried out for a wide range of Reynolds numbers, extending from 120k to 315k, and exit Mach numbers, extending from 0.5 to 0.9. B. Determine experimentally the stagnation pressure loss improvement due to profiled non-axysimmetric end-walls in a relevant environment. C. Investigate further the physical mechanisms that govern the variation of stagnation pressure losses of profiled end-walls. CFD results are presented and are compared with experimental results in terms of total pressure loss, helicity and SKEH.

Profile and secondary loss correlations have been developed and improved over the years to include the induced incidence and leading edge geometry and to reflect recent trends in turbine design. All of these investigations have resulted in better understanding of the flow field in turbine passages. However, there is still insufficient data on the performance of turbine airfoils with high turning angles operating at varying incidence angles at transonic Mach numbers. The paper presents detailed aerodynamic measurements for three different turbine airfoils with similar turning angles but different aerodynamic shapes. Midspan total pressure loss, secondary flow field, and static pressure measurements on the airfoil surface in the cascades are presented and compared for the three different airfoil sets. The airfoils are designed for the same velocity triangles (inlet/exit gas angles and Mach number). Airfoil curvature and true chord are varied to change the loading vs. chord. The objective is to investigate the type of loading distribution and its effect on aerodynamic performance (pressure loss). Measurements are made at +10, 0 and −10 degree incidence angles for high turning turbine airfoils with ∼127 degree turning. The cascade exit Mach numbers were varied within a range from 0.6 to 1.1. In order to attain a ratio of inlet Mach number to exit Mach number that is representative to that encountered in a real engine, the exit span is increased relative to the inlet span. This results in one end wall diverging from inlet to exit at a 13 degree angle, which simulates the required leading edge loading as seen in an engine. 3D viscous compressible CFD analysis was carried out in order to compare the results with experimentally obtained values and to further investigate the flow characteristics of the airfoils under study.

The influence of surface roughness on the profile and end-wall total pressure losses in Low Pressure Turbines was investigated experimentally in a turbine high-speed rig. The rig consisted of a rotor-stator configuration. Both rows of airfoils are high lift, high aspect ratio and high turning blades that are characteristic of state of the art Low Pressure Turbines. The stator airfoils (both vanes and platforms) were casted and afterwards they were barreled to improve their surface finish up to 1.73 μm Ra. Then they were assembled in the rig and tested. The stator was traversed upstream and downstream with miniature pneumatic probes to obtain total pressure, flow angle and static pressure flow fields. Once this test was completed the rig was disassembled and the stator airfoils were polished to achieve a roughness size of 0.72 μm Ra, characteristic of Low Pressure Turbine polished airfoils. Once again, the stators were assembled in the rig and tested to carry out a back-to-back comparison between the two different surface roughnesses. The total pressure profile and end-wall losses were measured for a wide range of Reynolds numbers, extending from 8×104 to 2.4×105, based on suction surface length (Res∼1.5 ReCx) and exit Mach number of 0.61. Experimental results are presented and compared in terms of area average, radial pitchwise average distributions and exit plane contours of total pressure losses, flow angles and helicity. The results agree with previous studies of roughness in Turbines, a beneficial effect of surface roughness was found at very low Reynolds numbers, in stagnation pressure losses.

AbstractThis study looks to find a suitable turbulence model for calculating pressure losses of ventilation components. In building ventilation, the most relevant Reynolds number range is between 3×104 and 6×105, depending on the duct dimensions and airflow rates. Pressure loss coefficients can increase considerably for some components at Reynolds numbers below 2×105. An initial survey of popular turbulence models was conducted for a selected test case of a bend with such a strong Reynolds number dependence. Most of the turbulence models failed in reproducing this dependence and predicted curve progressions that were too flat and only applicable for higher Reynolds numbers. Viscous effects near walls played an important role in the present simulations. In turbulence modelling, near-wall damping functions are used to account for this influence. A model that implements near-wall modelling is the lag elliptic blending k-ε model. This model gave reasonable predictions for pressure loss coefficients at lower Reynolds numbers. Another example is the low Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model of Wilcox (LRN). The modification uses damping functions and was initially developed for simulating profiles such as aircraft wings. It has not been widely used for internal flows such as air duct flows. Based on selected reference cases, the three closure coefficients of the LRN model were adapted in this work to simulate ventilation components. Improved predictions were obtained with new coefficients (LRNM model). This underlined that low Reynolds number effects are relevant in ventilation ductworks and give first insights for suitable turbulence models for this application. Both the lag elliptic blending model and the modified LRNM model predicted the pressure losses relatively well for the test case where the other tested models failed.

The heat transfer and aerodynamic performance of turbine airfoils are greatly influenced by the gas side surface finish. In order to operate at higher efficiencies and to have reduced cooling requirements, airfoil designs require better surface finishing processes to create smoother surfaces. In this paper, three different cast airfoils were analyzed: the first airfoil was grit blasted and codep coated, the second airfoil was tumbled and aluminide coated, and the third airfoil was polished further. Each of these airfoils had different levels of roughness. The TEXSTAN boundary layer code was used to make predictions of the heat transfer along both the pressure and suction sides of all three airfoils. These predictions have been compared to corresponding heat transfer data reported earlier by Abuaf et al. (1997). The data were obtained over a wide range of Reynolds numbers simulating typical aircraft engine conditions. A three-parameter full-cone based roughness model was implemented in TEXSTAN and used for the predictions. The three parameters were the centerline average roughness, the cone height and the cone-to-cone pitch. The heat transfer coefficient predictions indicated good agreement with the data over most Reynolds numbers and for all airfoils-both pressure and suction sides. The transition location on the pressure side was well predicted for all airfoils; on the suction side, transition was well predicted at the higher Reynolds numbers but was computed to be somewhat early at the lower Reynolds numbers. Also, at lower Reynolds numbers, the heat transfer coefficients were not in very good agreement with the data on the suction side.

This paper experimentally investigates the effect of rotation on heat transfer in typical turbine blade serpentine coolant passage with ribbed walls at low Mach numbers. To achieve the low Mach number (around 0.01) condition, pressurized Freon R-134a vapor is utilized as the working fluid. The flow in the first passage is radial outward, after the 180 deg tip turn the flow is radial inward to the second passage, and after the 180 deg hub turn the flow is radial outward to the third passage. The effects of rotation on the heat transfer coefficients were investigated at rotation numbers up to 0.6 and Reynolds numbers from 30,000 to 70,000. Heat transfer coefficients were measured using the thermocouples-copper-plate-heater regional average method. Heat transfer results are obtained over a wide range of Reynolds numbers and rotation numbers. An increase in heat transfer rates due to rotation is observed in radially outward passes; a reduction in heat transfer rate is observed in the radially inward pass. Regional heat transfer coefficients are correlated with Reynolds numbers for nonrotation and with rotation numbers for rotating condition, respectively. The results can be useful for understanding real rotor blade coolant passage heat transfer under low Mach number, medium–high Reynolds number, and high rotation number conditions.

The present study is focused is on two key quantities of interest during windmill operation: fan rotational speed and stage losses. A model for the rotor exit flow is developed, that serves to bring out a similarity parameter for the fan rotational speed. Furthermore, the model shows that the spanwise flow profiles are independent of the throughflow, being determined solely by the configuration geometry. Interrogation of previous numerical simulations verifies the self-similar nature of the flow. The analysis also demonstrates that the vane inlet dynamic pressure is the appropriate scale for the stagnation pressure loss across the rotor and splitter. Examination of the simulation results for the stator reveals that the flow blockage resulting from the severely negative incidence that occurs at windmill remains constant across a wide range of mass flow rates. For a given throughflow rate, the velocity scale is then shown to be that associated with the unblocked vane exit area, leading naturally to the definition of a dynamic pressure scale for the stator stagnation pressure loss. The proposed scaling procedures for the component losses are applied to the flow configuration of Prasad and Lord (2010). Comparison of simulation results for the rotor-splitter and stator losses determined using these procedures indicates very good agreement. Analogous to the loss scaling, a procedure based on the fan speed similarity parameter is developed to determine the windmill rotational speed and is also found to be in good agreement with engine data. Thus, despite their simplicity, the methods developed here possess sufficient fidelity to be employed in design prediction models for aircraft propulsion systems.

The goal of this study was to determine laminar stagnation pressure loss coefficients for circular ducts in which flow encounters a planar bifurcation. Flow conditions and pressure losses in these laminar bifurcations are of interest in microfluidic devices, in porous media, and in other networks of small ducts or pores. Until recently, bifurcation geometries had been studied almost exclusively for turbulent flow, which is often found in fluid supply and drain systems. Recently, pressure loss coefficients from simulations of a few arbitrary bifurcation geometries in two-dimensions have been published — the present study describes the extension of these two-dimensional simulations to three-dimensional circular ducts. The pressure loss coefficients determined in this study are intended to allow realistic simulation of existing laminar flow networks or the design of these networks. This study focused on a single inlet duct with two outlet ducts, which were allowed to vary in diameter, flow fraction, and angle — all relative to the inlet duct. All ducts considered in this study were circular with their axes in a common plane. Laminar stagnation pressure loss coefficients were determined by simulating incompressible flow through 475 different geometries and flow condition combinations. In all cases, the flow was laminar in the inlet and outlet ducts with a Reynolds number of 15 in the inlet duct. Simulations of the dividing flow geometries were done using FLUENT and a custom written computer code, which automated the process of creating the three-dimensional flow geometries. The outputs, pressure and velocity distributions at the inlet and outlets, were averaged over the circular ducts and then used to calculate pressure loss coefficients for each of the geometries and flow fraction scenarios simulated. The results for loss coefficient for the geometries considered ranged from 2.0 to 70. The loss coefficient for any geometry increased significantly as the outlet flow fraction increased. A consistent increase in loss coefficient was also observed as a function of decreasing outlet duct diameter. Less significant variation of the loss coefficient was observed as a function of the angles of the outlet ducts.

An experimental investigation of wake-induced unsteady heat transfer in the stagnation region of a cylinder was conducted. The objective of the study was to create a quasi-steady representation of the stator/rotor interaction in a gas turbine using two stationary cylinders in crossflow. In this simulation, a larger cylinder, representing the leading-edge region of a rotor blade, was immersed in the wake of a smaller cylinder, represenung the trailing-edge region of a stator vane. Time-averaged and time-resolved heat-transfer results were obtained over a wide range of Reynolds numbers at two Mach numbers: one incompressible and one transonic. The tests were conducted at Reynolds numbers, Mach numbers and gas-to-wall temperature ratios characteristic of turbine engine conditions in an isentropic compression-heated transient wind tunnel (LICH tube). The augmentation of the heat transfer in the stagnation region due to wake unsteadiness was documented by comparison with isolated cylinder tests. It was found that the time-averaged heat-transfer rate at the stagnation line, expressed in terms of the Frossling number (Nu/√Re), reached a maximum independent of the Reynolds number. The power spectra and cross correlation of the heat-transfer signals in the stagnation region revealed the importance of large vortical structures shed from the upstream wake generator. These structures caused large positive and negative excursions about the mean heat-transfer rate in the stagnation region.

Correlations predicting the pressure loss coefficient along with the laminar, transitional, and turbulent limiting Reynolds numbers with the β ratio are presented for short square-edged orifice plates. The knowledge of pressure losses across orifices is a very important industrial problem while predicting pressure losses in piping systems. Similarly, it is important to define stable operating regions for the application of a short orifice at lower Reynolds numbers. This work experimentally determined pressure loss coefficients for square-edged orifices for orifice-to-diameter ratios of β = 0.2, 0.3, 0.57, and 0.7 for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in both laminar and turbulent flow regimes.
