LRV Compression Loads: Statistical Data and Recommendations

Carbody compression resistance is a major LRV safety feature in head-on collisions. Regrettably, one of the difficulties in writing LRV specifications has been establishing credible values for the design compression loads that the carbody shall demonstrate to resist. One reason for this difficulty is that setting compression loads involves judgment and therefore is to a great degree subjective. The other is that vehicle engineers have been setting design compression loads in relative isolation from each other, without the benefit of a broader discussion among them. This paper will attempt to reconcile the various positions and, based on statistical data, will recommend median values for compression loads as a function of carset kinetic energy.

Although joints with synovial cavities and articular surfaces are very variable, they all have one common peculiarity. In most cases, one of the articular surfaces is concave, whereas the other one is convex. During the formation of a joint, the epiphysis, which has less kinetic energy during the movements in the joint, forms a convex surface, whereas large kinetic energy forms the epiphysis with a concave surface. Basing on this concept, the analysis of the structure of the joints, allows to determine forces involved into their formation, and to identify the general patterns of the formation of the skeleton.


This study of the thallium fluoride spectrum was undertaken as part of a detailed investigation into the molecular spectra of the series of heavy diatomic fluorides HgF, TlF, PbF and BiF. Whereas the spectra of PbF (Rochester 1936) and BiF (Howell 1936), of which analyses have already been published, contain no very unusual features the TlF spectrum is particularly rich in them, so that it has seemed desirable to extend the original investigation in order to include the other halides of thallium. The absorption spectrum of the fluoride has already been examined by Boizova and Butkow (1936), their findings being summarized below: 1— A continuum at 2200 A appears when the absorption tube is at a temperature of 155° C. Its long-wave edge moves towards the red with increase of temperature, being at 2700 for the unsaturated vapour and at 3400 for the saturated vapour when the temperature is 280° C. They attributed this continuum to the dissociation of Tl 2 F 2 . Tl 2 F 2 → 2TlF + kinetic energy.

Abstract This study focuses on the quantification and evaluation of the effects of ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) warm phases, using a composite of five intense El Niño episodes between 1979 – 2011 on the Energetic Lorenz Cycle for four distinct regions around the globe: 80° S – 5° N (region 1), 50° S – 5° N (region 2), 30° S – 5° N (region 3), and 30° S – 30° N (region 4), using Data from NCEP reanalysis-II. Briefly, the results showed that zonal terms of potential energy and kinetic energy were intensified, except for region 1, where zonal kinetic energy weakened. Through the analysis of the period in which higher energy production is observed, a strong communication between the available zonal potential and the zonal kinetic energy reservoirs can be identified. This communication weakened the modes linked to eddies of potential energy and kinetic energy, as well as in the other two baroclinic conversions terms. Furthermore, the results indicate that for all the regions, the system itself works to regain its stable condition.

<p>The article is devoted to the analysis of court punishment practice in the case of offences which have the same statutory punishment. Three groups of such offences are selected: offences punished with imprisonment from 2 to 12 years (group I), offences punished with imprisonment from 3 months to 5 years (group II) and offences punished with imprisonment from 1 month to 3 years (group III). Most of the analysed offences belonged to the group of offences against freedom (including sexual freedom) and the other chosen offences were against other socially cherished values were those quite popular in practice (therefore, the statistical data in their cases are quite representative). The analysed year was 2016. The starting hypothesis was that offences which have identical punishments in the Criminal Code (which means that the lawmaker perceives them as socially harmful in a similar way) will not be treated in such a similar way in practice and in all groups there would be offences which would be punished with visibly more severe and lighter punishments. Detailed analysis of statistical data referring to punishments imposed for the discussed offences confirmed the initial hypothesis, showing also the already known fact that courts tend to impose punishments which are closer to the minimum than to the maximum provided by the lawmaker.</p>

Word clouds manifest interactive visuals along with their statistical data. Thus knowledge discovery and aesthetic data visualization interlink to produce interactive word cloud which is an interesting, textual, statistical and visual data. This study aims to generate interactive word cloud—Cirrus—on the basis of statistical data to preview text of the novel for readers. So cirrus tool is selected from Voyant open access tools to produce interactive statistical word cloud. Then the generated word cloud and statistical data are analyzed with mixed method and its analysis draws insight from Rakesh Aggrawal’s Knowledge Discovery Theory which seeks innovative and interesting knowledge patterns. This thematic word cloud verifies already known themes and discovers innovative interesting themes. Current study reveals that all mentioned key themes can be easily extracted from a voluminous novel with the help of Cirrus tool. Key motifs have been presented in the word cloud for the readers. On the other hand, unwritten themes can’t be extracted through machine learning tools, rather it is the task of human cognition. Primarily, this novel based study reveals names of chief characters, for instance “Tommy (496),” “Ruth (455)” and “I (Kathy) (355).” Furthermore, motifs of nostalgic memories with word “remember (143),” “thought (126)” about “Hailsham (203),” “carer (74),” “sex (80),” sex “lectures (8)” have been discovered as a preview. Previewing technique prepares reader’s mind and gives an epigrammatic digital view of the text. The visual themes as knowledgeable word cloud leave an indelible mark on the slate of memory.

This article confronts several theoretical role-models about mayor's behaviour with their own perception. For this purpose, the statistical data is drawn from a survey among Flemish mayors. Mayors perceive the ''father of the community" role as the most prevailing one. This perception is reflected in their timespending. More than 1/4 of their time is dedicated towards activities such as participation in the community life, individual service rendering to citizens and having individual contacts with them.The father of the community' role lives strongly among mayors with a lower educational degree and less among the higher educated ones. It is also more perceived among mayors being recent office-bolders, while the more experienced ones seem more to maintain a certain distance from this role. Moreover, mayors with a lower educational degree are recordholders in having individual contacts with citizens. Finally, no relation has been found between roleperception and timespending on the one hand and party background on the other hand.

Economic change in colonial India followed a definite pattern. Chapter 3 describes the pattern with statistical data. The chapter shows that the average rate of growth of national income per capita was low, but that the average picture is misleading since the experiences of agriculture on the one hand and industry and services on the other differed greatly. The presence of dissimilar trajectories complicates the task of explaining the pattern of change. The chapter suggests that instead of asking if colonialism and globalization made India rich or poor, we should be asking why colonialism and globalization made some livelihoods rich and left some others poor. Chapter 3 surveys the statistical data that enables asking question like this one.

We show that a one-dimensional analytical study allows us to test and clarify the derivation, assumptions, and symmetry properties of the intervalley effective mass equation (IVEME). In particular, we show that the IVEME is consistent with a two-band case, and is in fact exact for a model that satisfies exactly all its assumptions. On the other hand, an alternative formulation in k-space that includes intervalley kinetic energy terms is consistent with a one-band case, provided that intra-valley kinetic energy terms are also calculated consistent with one band. We also show that the standard symmetry assumptions for both real space and k-space formulations are not actually exact, but are consistent with a "total symmetric" projection, or with taking spherical averages in a three-dimensional case.

With up to 12 spring-damper groups distributed in the actual area of a rail pad, different fastening models are developed in this paper to include the nonuniform pressure distribution within a fastening system and model the constraints at the rail bottom more realistically for the purpose of high frequency dynamics between vehicle and track. Applied to a 3D transient FE model of the vehicle-track interaction, influence of the fastening modeling on the high frequency dynamic contact forces at singular rail surface defects (SRSDs) is examined. Two defect models, one is relatively large and the other is small, are employed. Such a work is of practical significance because squats, as a kind of SRSD, have become a wide spread problem. Results show that the fastening modeling plays an important role in the high frequency dynamic contact forces at SRSDs. Supports in the middle of the rail bottom, modeled as spring-damper groups located under rail web, are found to be most important. The less the rail bottom is constrained or supported, the more isolated the sleepers and substructure are from the wheel-rail interaction, and the more kinetic energy is kept in the rail after impact at a SRSD. Rolling speed is also varied to take into account its influence. Finally, based on the results of this work, influence of the service states of the fastening system on growth of relatively small SRSDs is discussed.

This paper reports on the thermal characterization, via the thermal conductivity, of natural materials, such as mulch and lava rock and their usefulness as building insulation. Experiments were carried out using a scale one monitored wall (i.e. heat flux and temperature sensors) exposed to a heating source on one side and to an air conditioned space on the other. The wall system was composed of an 8.85 cm thick cavity, where the mulch and lava rock were placed. The cavity was enclosed between two layers of pine wood (40 mm thick each). After the experiments and statistical data manipulation, the estimated thermal conductivity of the materials were 0.48 ± 0.001 W.m-1.K-1 and 0.129 ± 0.003 W.m-1.K-1 for mulch and lava-rock, respectively. That is, mulch has a thermal conductivity comparable to that of bulk hemp while lava rock has a thermal conductivity comparable to that of hemp brick. These values indicate the usefulness of mulch, compared to the impracticality of using lava-rocks materials for building insulation.
