The IP Landscape for MEMS Packaging

Early MEMS devices employed packages developed for conventional semiconductor microelectronics. Today, MEMS packages reflect the unique environment, mechanical, chemical and thermal requirements of MEMS devices themselves. A casual search of on-line databases reveals nearly 40,000 patents worldwide containing the words “MEMS” and “package.” While not all relevant, the number of IP documents easily overwhelms researchers, investors and IP practitioners. The authors systematically analyze the relevant IP and organize it by generic technology categories. A unique mapping methodology provides greater understanding of the landscape of IP in the MEMS packaging arena across a wide range of considerations including geography, IP development and ownership trends, infrastructure implications and application concepts. The authors also present a rudimentary valuation of IP within the MEMS packaging field based on citation analysis. Finally, the authors demonstrate a method to develop a strategic framework based on the IP landscape useful for investment, market development and strategic alliance planning.

The through-silicon-vias (TSVs) process is a vital technology in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) packaging. The current via filling technique based on copper electroplating has many shortcomings, such as involving multi-step processes, requiring sophisticated equipment, low through-put and probably damaging the MEMS devices susceptible to mechanical polishing. Herein, a room temperature treatable, high-efficient and low-cost seedless TSV process was developed with a one-step filling process by using novel electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) filled with silver nanowires. The as-prepared ECAs could be fully cured at room temperature and exhibited excellent conductivity due to combining the benefits of both polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and silver nanowires. Complete filling of TSVs with the as-prepared 30 wt% silver nanowires ECAs was realized, and the resistivity of a fully filled TSV was as low as 10−3 Ω·cm. Furthermore, the application of such novel TSV filling process could also be extended to a wide range of different substrates, showing great potential in MEMS packaging, flexible microsystems and many other applications.

Digital computers are becoming widely recognized as standard accessories for electron microscopy. Due to instrumental innovations the emphasis in digital processing is shifting from off-line manipulation of electron micrographs to on-line image acquisition, analysis and microscope control. An on-line computer leads to better utilization of the instrument and, moreover, the flexibility of software control creates the possibility of a wide range of novel experiments, for example, based on temporal and spatially resolved acquisition of images or microdiffraction patterns. The instrumental resolution in electron microscopy is often restricted by a combination of specimen movement, radiation damage and improper microscope adjustment (where the settings of focus, objective lens stigmatism and especially beam alignment are most critical). We are investigating the possibility of proper microscope alignment based on computer induced tilt of the electron beam. Image details corresponding to specimen spacings larger than ∼20Å are produced mainly through amplitude contrast; an analysis based on geometric optics indicates that beam tilt causes a simple image displacement. Higher resolution detail is characterized by wave propagation through the optical system of the microscope and we find that beam tilt results in a dispersive image displacement, i.e. the displacement varies with spacing. This approach is valid for weak phase objects (such as amorphous thin films), where transfer is simply described by a linear filter (phase contrast transfer function) and for crystalline materials, where imaging is described in terms of dynamical scattering and non-linear imaging theory. In both cases beam tilt introduces image artefacts.

A simple model has been developed to estimate the sensible thermodynamic properties such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, heat capacity, and entropy of hydrocarbons over a wide range of temperatures with special attention to the branched molecules. The model is based on statistical thermodynamic expressions incorporating translational, rotational and vibrational motions of the atoms. A method to determine the number of degrees of freedom for different motion modes (bending and torsion) has been established. Branched rotational groups, such as CH3 and OH, have been considered. A modification of the characteristic temperatures for different motion mode has been made which improves the agreement with the exact values for simple cases. The properties of branched alkanes up to 2,3,4,-trimthylpentane have been calculated and the results are in good agreement with the experimental data. A relatively small number of parameters are needed in this model to estimate the sensible thermodynamic properties of a wide range of species. The model may also be used to estimate the properties of molecules and their isomers, which have not been measured, and is simple enough to be easily programmed as a subroutine for on-line kinetic calculations. The BMJ has always been recognised as a leading medical journal for a wide range of subjects, and has always been useful for nurses to access for up to date and current medical opinion. Recently the BMJ has diversified to take on a more political nature, with its content reflecting a more proactive approach to influencing health care policy in the United Kingdom by the medical profession. As such the BMJ has become extremely useful for identifying opinions of current ‘hot topics’ for nurses that are headline news such as nurse consultants, hospital administration and central government policy. However, one problem remains, trying to find the original copy in the library will remain difficult. After spending the best part of an hour to suddenly realise that ‘how silly you are for not realising that BMJ March 1997 is filed in the British Journal of Nursing section 1998!!’ is often a frustrating and demoralising experience - particularly if after finding the article you find it has nothing to do with the subject that you are researching. This problem is to be banished forever with the BMJ website. The full BMJ is available free on line. The excellent search engine is particularly useful and is accurate when matching target articles. All articles are available for ‘full text’ downloads free of charge.

Abstract The primary function of the Wheatstone bridge is to measure an unknown resistance. The elements of this well-known measurement circuit will take on different values depending upon the range and accuracy required for a particular application. The Taguchi approach to parameter design is used to select values for the measurement circuit elements so as to reduce measurement error. Next we introduce the use of an artificial neural network to extrapolate limited experimental results to predict system response over a wide range of applications. This approach can be employed for on-line quality control of the manufacture of such device.

Teenager aged 10-19 years is the digital native generation and thetj are connected with the virtual world almost every time. Online activities they do, among others, are connected through social media, search for information on various websites, downloading music, watching movies via YouTube, read the news, play on-line games, and etc. Teens' on-line activity behind it has a variety of risks and should be examined together with any kind of on-line risks experienced by adolescents as a first step in order to minimize the negative effects that rcould occur. This article contains a study of the conceptualization of on-line risk, scope and classification of on-line risk; featuring a wide range of research<br />011 the influence of social environment on the risk of on-line teens; and attempts to deal with the risk of negative media that hit young people through new media literacy education. Media literacy curriculum that already exist.&gt;hould be adapted to the characteristics of new media. At its core, the new media literacy should include: (1) media literacy; (2) d igital technologtj literacy; (3) civil and social respol?sibility; and ( 4) imagination and creativih;.

Abstract A method for automated mask-layout and process synthesis for MEMS is presented. The synthesis problem is approached by use of a genetic algorithm. For a given desired device shape, and several fabrication process choices, this synthesis method will produce one or more mask-layouts and associated fabrication process sequences (which when used can generate shapes close to the desired one). Given complicated device shapes and wide range of fabrication process possibilities, the designer may encounter difficulty producing the right mask-layout and fabrication procedure by experience and trial and error. An automated synthesis tool like this will be helpful to the designer by increasing the efficiency and accuracy of the design of MEMS devices.

Benzoquinone and its reduced form hydroquinone belong to phenolic compounds and are found in living organisms in free form or in glycosides. They are active substances of some medicinal plants and have a pharmacological effect on the human body. Accordingly, their derivatives are important objects for chemical synthesis and development of new drugs. This article presents the findings of the structural design of substances with benzoquinone or hydroquinone fragment and sulfur-containing compound. By use of appropriate on-line programs a predictive screening of the biological activity and cytotoxicity of thiosulfonate derivatives of benzoquinone and hydroquinone has been conducted. It has been found that they have immense methodological potential to be synthesized by substances with a wide range of biological activities and a high value of probable activity, which substantiates the feasibility of conducting experimental studies on their biological activity, particularly anticancer.

This chapter introduces the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Virtual Library as a tool for linking researchers and agricultural research results. The CGIAR is a strategic alliance of countries, international and regional organizations, and private foundations supporting 15 international agricultural centers that work in partnership with national agricultural research institutions and societies. The research results generated are numerous and cover a wide range of subject fields. While these are properly documented, locating relevant and timely information across the system’s 15 centers is a long and tedious process as individual databases have to be searched. The CGIAR virtual library (CGVLibrary) project of the CGIAR Libraries and Information Services Consortium (CGIARLISC) was created in 2005 to address the difficulty of information retrieval across the various centers. It is now available via the WWW (http://vlibrary.cgiar.org/) and knowledge generated by the CGIAR can now be retrieved with a few mouse clicks.
