Numerical Simulation of Hydrogen Transport at a Crack Tip in a Pipeline Steel

The technology of large scale hydrogen transmission from central production facilities to refueling stations and stationary power sites is at present undeveloped. Among the problems which confront the implementation of this technology is the deleterious effect of hydrogen on structural material properties, in particular at gas pressure of 1000 psi which is the desirable transmission pressure suggested by economic studies for efficient transport. In this paper, a hydrogen transport methodology for the calculation of hydrogen accumulation ahead of a crack tip in a pipeline steel is outlined. The approach accounts for stress-driven transient diffusion of hydrogen and trapping at microstructural defects whose density may evolve dynamically with deformation. The results are used to discuss a lifetime prediction methodology for failure of materials used for pipelines and welds exposed to high-pressure hydrogen. Development of such predictive capability and strategies is of paramount importance to the rapid assessment of using the natural-gas pipeline distribution system for hydrogen transport and of the susceptibility of new alloys tailored for use in the new hydrogen economy.

To understand the mechanisms of hydrogen embrittlement our approach integrates mechanical property testing, TEM observations, and finite element modeling. In this work a hydrogen transport methodology for the calculation of hydrogen accumulation ahead of a crack tip in a pipeline steel is outlined. The approach accounts for stress-driven transient diffusion of hydrogen and trapping at microstructural defects whose density evolves dynamically with deformation. The results are analyzed to correlate the level of load in terms of the applied stress intensity factor with the time after which hydrogen transport takes place under steady state conditions. The transient and steady state hydrogen concentration profiles are used to assess the hydrogen effect on the mechanisms of fracture as they depend on material microstructure.

Among the problems that confront the implementation of this technology is the deleterious effect of hydrogen on structural material properties, in particular, at gas pressures of the order of 15MPa, which are the suggested magnitudes by economic studies for efficient transport. In order to understand the hydrogen embrittlement conditions of the pipeline materials, we simulate hydrogen diffusion through the surfaces of an axial crack on the internal wall of a vessel coupled with material deformation under plane strain small scale yielding conditions. The calculation of the hydrogen accumulation ahead of the crack tip accounts for stress-driven transient diffusion of hydrogen and trapping at microstructural defects whose density evolves dynamically with deformation. The results are analyzed to correlate for a given material system the time after which hydrogen transport takes place under steady state conditions with the level of load in terms of the applied stress intensity factor at the crack tip and the size of the domain used for the simulation of the diffusion.

A variety of studies recently proved the applicability of different dried, fine-grained dredged materials as replacement material for erosion-resistant sea dike covers. In Rostock, Germany, a large-scale field experiment was conducted, in which different dredged materials were tested with regard to installation technology, stability, turf development, infiltration, and erosion resistance. The infiltration experiments to study the development of a seepage line in the dike body showed unexpected measurement results. Due to the high complexity of the problem, standard geo-hydraulic models proved to be unable to analyze these results. Therefore, different methods of inverse infiltration modeling were applied, such as the parameter estimation tool (PEST) and the AMALGAM algorithm. In the paper, the two approaches are compared and discussed. A sensitivity analysis proved the presumption of a non-linear model behavior for the infiltration problem and the Eigenvalue ratio indicates that the dike infiltration is an ill-posed problem. Although this complicates the inverse modeling (e.g., termination in local minima), parameter sets close to an optimum were found with both the PEST and the AMALGAM algorithms. Together with the field measurement data, this information supports the rating of the effective material properties of the applied dredged materials used as dike cover material.

Position information is very important tactical information in large-scale joint military operations. Positioning with datalink time of arrival (TOA) measurements is a primary choice when a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) is not available, datalink members are randomly distributed, only estimates with measurements between navigation sources and positioning users may lead to a unsatisfactory accuracy, and positioning geometry of altitude is poor. A time division multiple address (TDMA) datalink cooperative navigation algorithm based on INS/JTIDS/BA is presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm is used to revise the errors of the inertial navigation system (INS), clock bias is calibrated via round-trip timing (RTT), and altitude is located with height filter. The TDMA datalink cooperative navigation algorithm estimate errors are stated with general navigation measurements, cooperative navigation measurements, and predicted states. Weighted horizontal geometric dilution of precision (WHDOP) of the proposed algorithm and the effect of the cooperative measurements on positioning accuracy is analyzed in theory. We simulate a joint tactical information distribution system (JTIDS) network with multiple members to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The simulation results show that compared to an extended Kalman filter (EKF) that processes TOA measurements sequentially and a TDMA datalink navigation algorithm without cooperative measurements, the TDMA datalink cooperative navigation algorithm performs better.

AbstractWater companies and their consumers affected with leakages in water distribution system worldwide. This has attracted many practitioner’s attention as well as researchers over the past years. Selected study area suffers from water losses of about 10 to 15% which accounts to loss of about 9 to 9.75 million liters per month. The present study was under taken to understand, analyze and evaluate the losses and suggest preventive measures of wrapping and repair clamping for control of these losses. The assessment of water losses is done through comparative analysis of data using Microsoft Excel software. Population forecasting is done in context of assessing the amount of water lost that can be prevented in future decades, adjusting to increased water demand and losses. For better efficiency of the suggested methods, experimental analysis was carried out on a reduced scale model of a single stretched pipeline. Cost estimation of the preventive measures was done by obtaining information about the materials used by trading professionals.

Abstract Previous studies have shown that the Ancient Egyptians used malted wheat and barley as the main ingredients in beer brewing, but the chemical determination of the exact recipe is still lacking. To investigate the constituents of ancient beer, we conducted a detailed IR and GC-MS based metabolite analyses targeting volatile and non-volatile metabolites on the residues recovered from the interior of vats in what is currently the world’s oldest (c. 3600 BCE) installation for large-scale beer production located at the major pre-pharaonic political center at Hierakonpolis, Egypt. In addition to distinguishing the chemical signatures of various flavoring agents, such as dates, a significant result of our analysis is the finding, for the first time, of phosphoric acid in high level probably used as a preservative much like in modern beverages. This suggests that the early brewers had acquired the knowledge needed to efficiently produce and preserve large quantities of beer. This study provides the most detailed chemical profile of an ancient beer using modern spectrometric techniques and providing evidence for the likely starting materials used in beer brewing.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis, an oligotroph, is well recognized for its potential for biofilm formation. The present study explored the biofilm forming ability of a strain isolated from municipal drinking water on plumbing materials. The intensity of biofilm formation of this strain on different plumbing materials was examined by using 1 × 1 cm2 pieces of six different pipe materials, i.e. polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), aluminium (Al), copper (Cu) and rubber (R) and observing by staining with the chemical chromophore, Calcofluor. To understand whether biofilm formation occurs under flow through conditions, a laboratory-scale simulated distribution system, comprised of the above materials was fabricated. Biofilm samples were collected from the designed system at different biofilm ages (10, 40 and 90 hours old) and enumerated. The results indicated that the biofilm formation occurred on all plumbing materials with Cu and R as exceptions. The intensity of biofilm formation was found to be maximum on PVC followed by PP and PE. We also demonstrated the chemical chromophore (Calcofluor) successfully for rapid and easy visual detection of biofilms, validated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis of the plumbing materials. Chlorination has little effect in preventing biofilm development.

AbstractUsing large-scale molecular dynamics simulation on a massively parallel computer, we have studied the initiation of cracking in a Monel-like alloy of Cu-Ni. In a low temperature 2D sample, fracture from a notch starts at a little beyond 2.5% critical strain when the propagation direction is perpendicular to a cleavage plane. We discuss a method of characterizing crack tip position using a measure of area around the crack tip.
