A New Rheological Model of Magnetorheological Fluids for CFD: Comparison and Validation

Magnetorheological fluid is a special smart fluid which can show different rheological properties under different magnetic flux densities due to its magnetically sensitive structure. This makes the fluid able to be manipulated and semi-actively controlled for various applications such as dampers, clutches and brakes. To provide an effective damping it is necessary to create an appropriate control algorithm. In order to design a structure with magnetorheological fluid and to get an idea for a control approach, the physics of the fluid motion has to be modelled. Computational Fluid Dynamics is an effective tool to model any fluid behaviour or any fluid involved structure. For magnetorheological devices, despite number of numerical models available in the literature, a befitting model is not yet presented. In this study a mapped rheological model is proposed and used in a magnetorheological damper simulation. The results are compared with other models and experimental data. It is shown that the new mapped model is effective and better than old approaches. It also showed a good agreement with the experimental data.

The squeeze mode of the magnetorheological damper can be used to stabilize precision instruments (balances, optical devices, etc.) to eliminate interference from external vibrational noise, due to the small displacement and large damping offered by the magnetorheological fluid. The squeeze-strengthen effect observed experimentally in the magnetorheological fluid with squeeze mode can lead to the strain stiffening phenomenon, which is similar to that of the magnetorheological elastomer. In this study, a novel model is developed to characterize the dynamics of the squeeze mode magnetorheological damper considering the strain stiffening hysteresis behavior. An experimentally derived differential evolution algorithm is used to identify the model parameters. Simulation results show that the proposed model can accurately describe the dynamics of the squeeze mode magnetorheological damper including the strain stiffening phenomenon. Furthermore, the identified results obtained by the proposed model appear to be better than those obtained by the hyperbolic model.

This work investigates the ink mileage of dry toners in electrophotography (EP). Four different substrates were printed on a dry-toner color production Xerox iGen3 EP press. The print layout contained patches with different cyan, magenta, yellow, and black tonal values from 10% to 100%. Toner amounts on cyan patches were measured using an analytical method. Printed patches and unprinted paper samples, as well as dry toners, were dissolved in concentrated nitric acid. The copper concentrations in the dissolved solutions were analyzed by a Zeeman graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer. Analytical results were calculated to determine the toner amounts on paper for different tonal values. Their corresponding reflection densities were also measured. All data were plotted with OriginPro® 8 software, and four mathematical models were used for curve fitting. It was found that the C-S model fitted the experimental data of the two uncoated papers better than the other three models. None of the four models fitted the experimental data of the two coated papers, while the linear model was found to fit the data well. Linear fitting was the best in the practical density region for the two coated papers. Ink mileage curves obtained from curve fitting were used to estimate how much ink was required to achieve a target density for each paper; hence, the ink mileage was calculated. The highest ink mileage was 3.39 times the lowest ink mileage. The rougher the paper surface, the higher the requirement for ink film weight, and the lower ink mileage. No correlation was found between ink mileage and paper porosity.

<p>A mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) formulation for symbolic regression was proposed to identify physical models from noisy experimental data. The formulation was tested using numerical models and was found to be more efficient than the previous literature example with respect to the number of predictor variables and training data points. The globally optimal search was extended to identify physical models and to cope with noise in the experimental data predictor variable. The methodology was coupled with the collection of experimental data in an automated fashion, and was proven to be successful in identifying the correct physical models describing the relationship between the shear stress and shear rate for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, and simple kinetic laws of reactions. Future work will focus on addressing the limitations of the formulation presented in this work, by extending it to be able to address larger complex physical models.</p><p><br></p>

A new test facility was designed and constructed to simulate flow in a horizontal well with a single perforation. A total of 635 tests were conducted with Reynolds numbers ranging from 5000 to 60,000 with influx to main rate ratios ranging from 1/5 to 1/100, and also for the no-influx case. The flow behavior in a single-perforation new friction expression for a single-perforation horizontal well was developed. A new simple correlation for the horizontal well friction factor was developed by applying experimental data to the general friction factor expression. The new friction factor correlation and experimental data were compared with the Asheim et al. (1992) data and model, and showed that the new correlation performed better than the Asheim et al. (1992) model.

For the validation of empirical models to calculate leakage flow rates in through-wall cracks of piping, reliable experimental data are essential. In this context, the Leakage Flow (LF) test rig was built up at the IKE for measurements of leakage flow rates with reduced pressure (maximum 1 MPA) and temperature (maximum 170 °C) compared to real plant conditions. The design of the test rig enables experimental investigations of through-wall cracks with different geometries and orientations by means of circular blank sheets with integrated cracks which are installed in the tubular test section of the test rig. In the paper, the experimental LF set-up and used measurement techniques are explained in detail. Furthermore, first leakage flow measurement results for one through-wall crack geometry and different imposed fluid pressures at ambient temperature conditions are presented and discussed. As an additional aspect the experimental data are used for the determination of the flow resistance of the investigated leak channel. Finally, the experimental results are compared with numerical results of WinLeck calculations to prove specifically in WinLeck implemented numerical models.

SUMMARYWhen the end-effector of a robotic arm grasps different payload masses, the output of joint motion will vary. By using a model reference adaptive control approach, the payload variation effect can be solved. This paper describes the design for a hybrid controller for serial robotic manipulators by combining a PID controller and a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) in order to further improve the accuracy and joint convergence speed performance. The convergence performance of the PID controller, the MRAC and the PID+MRAC hybrid controller for 1-DOF, 2-DOF and subsequently 3-DOF manipulators is compared. The comparison results show that the convergence speed and its performance for the MRAC and the PID+ MRAC controllers is better than that of the PID controller, and the convergence performance for the hybrid control is better than that of the MRAC control.

The aim of the work is to investigate power flows in the vibration reduction system equipped with a magnetorheological (MR) damper and energy regeneration. For this purpose, experiments were conducted in the test rig compound of the shaker and the vibration reduction system (electromagnetic harvester, MR damper, spring) which are attached to the sprung mass. The experimental data acquired under sine excitations enabled us to analyze instantaneous power fluxes, as well as a rate of inertial energy changes in the system.

Abstract Fully plastic failure stresses for circumferentially surface cracked pipes subjected to tensile loading can be estimated by means of limit load criteria based on the net-section stress approach. Limit load criteria of the first type (labelled LLC-1) were derived from the balance of uniaxial forces. Limit load criteria of the second type are given in Section XI of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineering) Code, and were derived from the balance of bending moment and axial force. These are labelled LLC-2. Fully plastic failure stresses estimated by using LLC-1 and LLC-2 were compared. The stresses estimated by LLC-1 are always larger than those estimated by LLC-2. From the literature survey of experimental data, failure stresses obtained by both types of LLC were compared with the experimental data. It can be stated that failure stresses calculated by LLC-1 are better than those calculated by LLC-2 for shallow cracks. On the contrary, for deep cracks, LLC-2 predictions of failure stresses are fairly close to the experimental data. Furthermore, allowable circumferential crack sizes obtained by LLC-1 were compared with the sizes given in Section XI of the ASME Code. The allowable crack sizes obtained by LLC-1 are larger than those obtained by LLC-2. It can be stated that the allowable crack size for tensile stress depends on the condition of constraint of the pipe, and the allowable cracks given in Section XI of the ASME Code are conservative.

The eye is a complex system of boundaries and fluids with different viscosities within the boundaries. At present, there are no experimental possibilities to thoroughly observe the dynamic 4D processes after one or another method of eye treatment is applied. The complexity of cumulative, i.e., focusing, and dissipative, i.e., scattering, convective and diffusion 4D fluxes of fluids in the eye requires 4D analytical and numerical models of fluid transfer in the human eyeball to be developed. The purpose of the study was to develop and then verify a numerical model of 4D cumulative-dissipative processes of fluid transfer in the eyeball. The study was the first to numerically evaluate the values of the characteristic time of the drug substance in the vitreous cavity until it is completely washed out, depending on the injection site; to visualize the paths of the vortex motion of the drug in the vitreous cavity; to determine the main parameters of the 4D fluid flows of the medicinal substance in the vitreous cavity, depending on the presence or absence of vitreous detachment from the wall of the posterior chamber of the eye. The results obtained are verified by the experimental data available to doctors. In the eye, as a partially open cumulative-dissipative system, Euler regions with high rates of cumulative flows and regions with low speeds or stagnant Lagrange flow zones are defined

Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) based on amorphous Fe-Si-B alloy magnetic particles were prepared. The influence of annealing treatment on stability and rheological property of MRFs was investigated. The saturation magnetization ( Ms) of amorphous Fe-Si-B particles after annealing at 550°C is 131.5 emu/g, which is higher than that of amorphous Fe-Si-B particles without annealing. Moreover, the stability of MRF with annealed amorphous Fe-Si-B particles is better than that of MRF without annealed amorphous Fe-Si-B particles. Stearic acid at 3 wt% was added to the MRF2 to enhance the fluid stability to greater than 90%. In addition, the rheological properties demonstrate that the prepared amorphous particle MRF shows relatively strong magnetic responsiveness, especially when the magnetic field strength reaches 365 kA/m. As the magnetic field intensified, the yield stress increased dramatically and followed the Herschel-Bulkley model.
