Leadership and Organizational Culture: An Investigation of Big Ten and Mid-American Conference Campus Recreation Administrations

This descriptive research study was conducted to investigate the concepts of transformational leadership and organizational culture within the administrative levels of campus recreation programs of Big Ten and Mid-American Conference universities. While transformational leadership was quantitatively measured by the Leadership Behavior Questionnaire (LBQ), the Culture Strength Assessment (CSA) and Culture Building Activities (CBA) instruments provided two quantitative measures of organizational culture. Qualitative data were also collected and analyzed to enrich and cross validate the findings. The researcher concluded that high transformational leaders direct programs that (a) possess stronger organizational cultures and (b) carry out culture-building activities, specifically the “customer orientation” function, to a greater extent than other leaders do. An interaction effect between leadership and conference was uncovered for this variable. No significant difference was uncovered between the high and low leadership groups relative to the penetration of culture throughout the top four hierarchical levels of the organization.

This study was undertaken to investigate the links between transformational leadership, organizational culture, and employee job satisfaction within the 69 Canadian YMCA organizations. Leadership was measured by the Leadership Behavior Questionnaire (Sashkin, 1988), organizational culture by the Organizational Culture Assessment Questionnaire (Sashkin, 1990), and employee job satisfaction by the Job in General Index (Balzer & Smith, 1990). The results of a MÁNOVA and subsequent ANOVA statistical treatments allowed the researchers to conclude that significant differences in organizational culture existed between the YMCA organizations led by high transformational leaders and YMCA organizations led by low transformational leaders. In addition, the YMCA organizations led by high transformational leaders administered organizations that carried out the culture-building activities of managing change, achieving goals, coordinated teamwork, and customer orientation to a greater degree than YMCA organizations led by low transformational leaders. No significant differences in employee job satisfaction levels existed between the YMCA organizations led by high transformational leaders and those led by low transformational leaders.

The areas of leadership and organizational culture continue to capture the interest of researchers and practitioners alike. Some suggest that these two areas might hold the key to understanding and predicting organizational effectiveness. Others remain skeptical, offering that effectiveness is determined by a variety of factors, many of which fall beyond the scope of the leader's influence or the culture of the organization. The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to explore the relationships that exist between transformational leadership (measured by the Leadership Behavior Questionnaire, organizational culture (measured by the Culture Strength Assessment), and organizational effectiveness (measured by the Target Population Satisfaction Index) in the campus recreation programs of both the Big Ten and Mid-American Conferences (N= 19). The directors of these programs were given considerable levels of job autonomy to lead their respective programs as well as the opportunity to alter and/or imbed a desired culture during their administration. Significant differences were uncovered in both conferences for executive transformational leadership and organizational effectiveness. However, no significant relationship was uncovered between transformational leadership and organizational effectiveness. A significant relationship was discovered between organizational culture strength and organizational effectiveness.

This study examines online group-buying from the perspectives of organizational culture and transformational leadership. A convenience sampling of 400 online group-buying individuals living in Taiwan was conducted in 2011, and this yielded 300 effective questionnaires, giving a return rate of 75%. ANOVA analyses and canonical correlation were used to examine the participants' perceptions of organizational culture and the leadership of online group-buying initiators, and the relationship between these leadership behaviors and the organizational culture in their workplaces. The main findings of this study are as follows: (1) online group-buying activities occur most often in organizations with a “supportive” culture; (2) “idealized influence” is the most influential leadership behavior with regard to the perceptions of group-buying members towards group-buying initiators; and (3) the better initiators are able to perform with regard to “individual consideration” and “idealized influence,” the greater the positive effects on online group-buying activities in the organizations with “supportive” and “innovative” organizational cultures.

Abstract: In recent years, transformational leadership as a health-related factor has become a focal point of interest in research and practice. However, the pathways and mechanisms underlying this association are not yet well understood. In order to gain knowledge on how or why transformational leadership and employee well-being are associated, we investigated the mediating effect of the work characteristics role clarity and predictability. The study was carried out on 618 employees working in the health-care sector in Germany. We tested the mediator effect using structural equation modeling. The results indicate that role clarity and predictability fully mediate the relation between transformational leadership and negative indicators of well-being. These results give credit to the notion that work characteristics play an important role in identifying health-relevant aspects of leadership behavior. Our findings advance the understanding of how to enhance employee well-being and have implications for the design of leadership-related interventions of workplace health promotion.

This study aims to prove whether transformational leadership training is effective for building anti-corruption attitudes of villages in Kebonharjo village, subdistrict Samigaluh Kulonprogo. This research is an experimental research with one group pre and posttest design.Subject design is 17 people from village of 21 candidates registered. Measuring tool used in this research is the scale of anti-corruption perception made by the researcher referring to the 9 anti-corruption values with the value of reliability coefficient of 0.871. The module used as an intervention made by the researcher refers to the transformational leadership dimension (Bass, 1990). The data collected is analyzed by statistical analysis of different test Paired Sample Test. Initial data collection results obtained sign value of 0.770 which means> 0.05 or no significant difference between anti-corruption perception score between before and after training. After a period of less than 1 (one) month then conducted again the measurement of follow-up of the study subjects in the measurement again using the scale of anti-corruption perception. The results of the second data collection were analysed with Paired Samples Test and obtained the value of 0.623 sign meaning p> 0.05 or no significant difference between post test data with follow-up data so that the hypothesis of this study was rejected.

Статья посвящена проблеме внедрения в практику управления персоналом уголовно-исполнительной системы современных технологий командообразования. Рассматривая технологию командообразования в качестве одного из средств повышения эффективности работы с кадрами уголовно-исполнительной системы, авторы раскрывают содержание и значение технологии командообразования в деятельности организации, характеризуют современные способы формирования команды. Акцентируется внимание на проблемных аспектах, связанных с использованием современных технологий командообразования в работе с кадрами уголовно-исполнительной системы (ограниченные объемы финансирования, отсутствие навыков использования нестандартных инструментов воздействия на персонал и внутренней готовности к их применению). На основе анализа современного состояния работы с кадрами уголовно-исполнительной системы и положений концепции формирования команд сформулированы предложения по использованию технологии командообразования в учреждениях и органах ФСИН России: 1) кадровая политика учреждений и органов ФСИН России должна строиться на принципах командного менеджмента, что позволит согласовать взаимные интересы работников и уголовно-исполнительной системы, укрепить организационную культуру структурных подразделений; 2) мероприятия по формированию команды должны стать неотъемлемой составляющей деятельности системы управления персоналом учреждений и органов ФСИН России, касаться всех работников и носить регулярный характер; 3) характер и содержание мероприятий по командообразованию должны развиваться, видоизменяться и усложняться по мере сплочения команды; 4) на начальном этапе внедрения технологий командообразования наиболее приемлемой представляется такая форма, как организация профессиональных праздников и проведение специальных мероприятий-событий с элементами тимбилдинга. The article is devoted to the problem of introduction into the practice of personnel management of the penal system of modern command formation technologies. Considering the technology of teambuilding as one of the means of increasing the efficiency of work with the personnel of the penal system, the author reveals the content and importance of teambuilding technology in the activities of the organization, characterizes the modern ways of forming a team. Attention is focused on the problematic aspects associated with the use of modern teambuilding technologies in working with the personnel of the penal system (limited amounts of funding, lack of skills to use non-standard instruments of impact on personnel and internal readiness for their application). Based on the analysis of the current state of work with the cadres of the criminal executive system and the concept of the formation of teams, proposals are formulated on the use of teambuilding technology in the institutions and bodies of the FPS of Russia: 1) the personnel policy of the institutions and bodies of the FPS of Russia should be based on the principles of command management, which will allow to coordinate the mutual interests of employees and the penal system, to strengthen the organizational culture of structural divisions; 2) the activities to form a team should become an integral part of the personnel management system of the institutions and bodies of the FPS of Russia, concern all employees and be of a regular nature; 3) the nature and content of team building activities should develop, change and become more complex as the team rallies; 4) at the initial stage of introduction of teambuilding technologies, the most acceptable form is the organization of professional holidays and the holding of special event-events with elements of team building.

The relationships between transformational leaders and several follower outcomes have been well investigated, but the mechanism through which these leadership behaviors relate to such outcomes is relatively unexplored. By investigating the mediating role of interactional justice, using structural equation modeling analyses, and data collected from supervisors and direct reports at various organizational levels, the present study provides insight into the psychological processes underlying transformational leadership and its effectiveness on follower outcomes. In line with social exchange theory, the main takeaway from the present study is suggesting that leaders, who display transformational leadership behavior in a manner perceived by followers as respectful, fair, and consistent with moral and ethical standards, may expect greater follower organizational attachment as an appropriate response to interactional justice.

Employee voice behavior has attained significant attention in contemporary research due to its positive consequences for both workers and employers. Drawing on the social exchange theory, this study examined the mediating role of job satisfaction and psychological empowerment on the relationship between transformational leadership and employee’s voice behavior. Data were collected through survey questionnaires by utilizing a three-wave time-lagged study design from employees from diverse private and public sector organizations in Pakistan. The parallel multiple mediation is tested through Hayes’s process macro. The results indicate that job satisfaction and psychological empowerment partially mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and employee’s voice behavior. Further analysis depicts that both job satisfaction and psychological empowerment leveraged under transformational leadership act as parallel mediators and have no statistical significant difference between them. The theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.
