REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations demand for an expedient discovery of a Cr(VI)-free alternative corrosion protection for light alloys even though the green alternatives might never be as cheap as current harmful technologies. In the present work, flash- plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings (FPEO) with the process duration < 90 s are developed on AZ31B alloy in varied mixtures of silicate-, phosphate-, aluminate-, and fluoride-based alkaline electrolytes implementing current density and voltage limits. The overall evaluation of the coatings’ anticorrosion performance (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), neutral salt spray test (NSST), paintability) shows that from nine optimized FPEO recipes, two (based on phosphate, fluoride, and aluminate or silicate mixtures) are found to be an adequate substitute for commercially used Cr(VI)-based conversion coating (CCC). The FPEO coatings with the best corrosion resistance consume a very low amount of energy (~1 kW h m−2 µm−1). It is also found that the lower the energy consumption of the FPEO process, the better the corrosion resistance of the resultant coating. The superb corrosion protection and a solid environmentally friendly outlook of PEO-based corrosion protection technology may facilitate the economic justification for industrial end-users of the current-consuming process as a replacement of the electroless CCC process.

In the present investigation, the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process was employed to form aluminum oxide coating layers to enhance corrosion resistance properties of high-strength aluminum alloys. The formed protective coating layers were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and characterized by several electrochemical techniques, including open circuit potential (OCP), linear potentiodynamic polarization (LP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results were reported in comparison with the bare 6061-O aluminum alloy to determine the corrosion performance of the coated 6061-O alloy. The PEO-treated aluminum alloy showed substantially higher corrosion resistance in comparison with the untreated substrate material. A relationship was found between the coating formation stage, process parameters and the thickness of the oxide-formed layers, which has a measurable influence on enhancing corrosion resistance properties. This study demonstrates promising results of utilizing PEO process to enhance corrosion resistance properties of high-strength aluminum alloys and could be recommended as a method used in industrial applications.

Abstract Magnesium alloys are now widely used for various purposes due to their unique properties despite the significant disadvantage associated with low corrosion resistance. The plasma-electrolytic oxidation (PEO), which allows the formation of ceramic coatings on the surface of magnesium alloys, is the most advanced and effective method for their protection. But firstly, PEO process of magnesium alloys has some difficulties, and secondly, PEO coatings affect the thermophysical characteristics of the modified materials, in particular they reduce thermal diffusivity. The presented work is devoted to the development of the technological parameters for formation of protective coating on the ultra-light alloy Mg-8Li-1Al-0.6Ce-0.3Y by the PEO method. The results analyses of electrolytes acidity and specific electrical conductivity before and after PEO process and also investigation data of the coatings structure and surface morphology are presented. An integral assessment of the ability of thermal diffusivity and corrosion resistance of the modified alloy was made. Studying of protective and thermophysical characteristics of the obtained coating showed that it provides a sufficiently high corrosion protection, despite the relatively small thickness, and the presence of pores and slightly (not more than 5%) reduces the thermal diffusivity of the magnesium ultra-light alloy.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coating was obtained on AZ31 Mg alloy using a direct current in a sodium silicate-based electrolyte with and without a carbon nanotube (CNT) additive. The surface morphology and phase composition of the PEO coatings were investigated through field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The corrosion-resistance properties of the PEO coatings were evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Furthermore, the heat-dissipation property was evaluated by a heat-flux measurement setup using a modified steady-state method and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results demonstrate that, by increasing the concentration of CNT additive in the electrolyte, the micropores and cracks of the PEO coatings are greatly decreased. In addition, the anticorrosion performance of the PEO coatings that incorporated CNT for the protection of the Mg substrate was improved. Finally, the coating’s heat-dissipation property was improved by the incorporation of CNT with high thermal conductivity and high thermal emissivity.

Plasma electrolytic saturation (PES) technique which holds the advantages of short treating time and limited heating influence and immediate quenching effect is conducted under high voltage power supply in some electrolyte has been extensively applied to enhance the surface performance of metallic materials. Steel is widely used in various fields thanks to its promising merits of easy workability, plasticity, toughness and weldability. It accounts for a large proportion in the application scope of the metal materials. Steel surfaces with good corrosion resistance, promising wear resistance and high hardness would be obtained by PES. Meanwhile, uniformed coatings can be formed without special requirements for substrate geometries using the PES. This paper first presents a brief introduction of the technological principle of PES. The status on studies and applications of PES for improving surface performance of steels has been reviewed.
