ObjectivesThe rapid worldwide increase in the incidence of diabetes significantly influences the lives of individuals, families and communities. Diabetes self-management requires personal autonomy and the presence of a supportive social environment. These attributes can considerably ameliorate the outcomes of the chronic condition. However, little is known about individual variations in overcoming the illness-related challenges and in the achievement of autonomy in daily activities. This paper seeks to bridge this knowledge gap.DesignThis qualitative study used the grounded theory approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the data collection and data analysis probed participant experiences of autonomy through the self-management of their daily socio-physical environments.SettingParticipants were recruited from the outpatient ward of a university clinic in Hungary.ParticipantsThe study was conducted with 26 adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (15 females and 11 males aged between 26 and 80 years; M=62.6 years; SD=13.1). The inclusion criteria were: T2D diagnosis at least 1 year before the beginning of the study; prescribed insulin injection therapy; aged over 18 years; native Hungarian speaker and not diagnosed with dementia or any form of cognitive impairment.ResultsThe study established three principal aspects of the active construction of personal autonomy in diabetes self-management: coping strategies vis-à-vis threats posed by the symptoms and the treatment of the disease; autonomous ways of creating protective space and time and relationship processes that support everyday experiences of self-directedness.ConclusionsThe results of this study confirm the validity of the self-determination theory in diabetes self-management. They also imply that pathways towards constructing everyday experiences of self-directedness in participants lead through self-acceptance, supporting family relationships and a doctor–patient relationship characterised by partnership. The tentative empirical model of pathways towards patients’ experience of self-directedness can serve as a framework for future research, patient-centred clinical practice, and education.

Sexual offenses evoke strong emotional responses and frequently elicit demands from society that offenders be indefinitely incarcerated or treated until they are deemed safe, which may impact the provision of therapeutic treatment for offenders. However, in recent years, there has been a proposal to move toward a positive, strengths-based treatment approach, namely the Good Lives Model (GLM). The present study used semi-structured interviews and a constructivist grounded theory approach to examine the experience of 13 men who were voluntarily engaging in or had completed a GLM community-based treatment program. A conceptual model emerged which outlines the process the men underwent, the factors they identified as crucial for change, and the perceived gains. The model extends previous work by exploring the process from the clients’ perspective. Implications for future research, prevention, and treatment are discussed.

Adopting a constructivist grounded theory approach, 91 students from Years 9 to 11, in gifted educational programs from three schools in Melbourne, nominated their inspiring teachers. Eleven teachers, who received the highest number of nominations, were invited to an interview and an observation of their teaching. The emerged theoretical construct was identified as “Opening new possibilities: Inspiring teachers of gifted and highly able students,” which is further explained through three main categories: Being a knowledgeable and passionate teacher, creating an academically safe learning environment, and teaching beyond and above the regular curriculum. In addition, the theoretical process was explained through three phases: Expanding knowledge and understanding, Fostering positive attitudes, and Encouraging students to take action. Contextual determinants were considered to analyze and report the findings: students’ developmental characteristics, school culture, curriculum, and gifted educational provisions. Findings are discussed in the light of existing literature, as well as study limitations and ideas for future research.

[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] Gatekeeping is a process by which individuals control access to kin. Gatekeeping is facilitative to the extent that others' involvement with kin is encouraged through information-sharing and cooperation; gatekeeping is restrictive to the extent that others' involvement with kin is restricted by withholding information or refusing contact or interaction. Despite recognition that gatekeeping is a dyadic phenomenon that occurs in many types of family relationships, researchers have largely explored gatekeeping from the perspective of gatekeepers. The experiences of individuals who are gatekept remain unaccounted for. Using a grounded theory approach, this study explored how individuals in multigenerational stepfamilies experience and respond to being gatekept. Data from 15 stepgrandmothers and 9 stepgrandfathers reporting on relationships with 153 stepkin reveal that the type of gatekeeping experienced (restrictive vs. facilitative) varies by gender, personal evaluations and perceptions of being gatekept, remarriage timing, and time spent in the remarried household. As families become increasingly complex in structure and functions, exploring gatekeeping processes that inform how families establish, carry out, and flex their rules, roles, and boundaries can strengthen our understanding of how families come to forge identities that promote relational positivity and stability. Purpose This paper aims to investigate the use of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technology and its barriers in human resourcemanagement (HRM) for Smart HR 4.0 and its impact on HR performance. Design/methodology/approach The research has been conducted using the grounded theory approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 122 senior HR officers of national and multi-national companies in India after the extensive literature review. NVivo 8.0 software was used for the analysis of the interview data. Findings I4.0 technology is used for HRM functions by HR professionals. It is revealed that Smart HR 4.0 that emerged from the I4.0 technology has leveraged the HR performance. It is also found that usage barriers, traditional barriers and risk barriers affect the use of I4.0 technology in HRM. Originality/value A model is developed using the grounded theory approach for HR managers to understand the impact of I4.0 on HRM. This study reveals the barriers affecting the use of I4.0 technology in HRM. It also provides the model for HR performance that emerged through the use of I4.0 technology in HR and Smart HR 4.0. The research delivered key insights for the HR professionals, marketers of HR technology and technology developers.

Previous studies have indicated that older men often experience disconnection from the community after retirement. Social activities have been shown to be effective in preventing social isolation among older urban men. Nevertheless, it has been reported that they often do not participate in community social activities and tend to be reluctant to do so. We explored the values and meanings of social activities for retired older men living in an urban area of Japan to understand support using social activities that are more suitable for them. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 older men (aged 68–80 years; M = 74.6 ± 3.79 years) about their interactions with family and non-family members, and their participation in various community social activities. The grounded theory approach was used for the analysis. As a result, the following five categories were derived as the values that participants place on the social activities that they engage in: “health as a resource and reward for social activities,” “feeling I am still useful,” “feeling that something is my responsibility,” “feeling of time well spent,” and “finding interest through interactions.” In addition, the following three categories were extracted as meanings of social activities: “fulfilling social life,” “maintaining stable family relationships,” and “maintaining safety and peace in the community.” When considering the social activities that older urban retired men are interested in and likely to participate in, these five values can be considered indicators. In contrast, to maintain stable family relationships and safety and peace in the community, participants sometimes used strategies to stop or abandon social activities. Therefore, in situations where a peaceful life within a family or neighborhood is threatened, it may be useful to help set aside sufficient time and allow for psychological leeway in advance to incorporate social activities into their lives.

When students learn a calculus construct, both a concept image as well as a concept definition is imprinted in their mind, and because of it, concrete and real-life examples become a prerequisite for a contextually rich learning environment for the abstractions inherently present in calculus. In the light of aforementioned propositions, the current study focusses on delving into several issues, few of the prominent ones include the epistemological nature of calculus curriculum in India’s senior-secondary schools, role of Indian calculus teachers in students’ cognition, possibility of enumeration of characteristics of a successful calculus teacher with regards to India’s socio-cultural milieu, challenges regarding complete immersion of calculus in manipulation of symbols that eventually give rise to cognitive obstacles, interrelationship between teachers’ calculus content knowledge and their pedagogical practices, effect of secondary school calculus on performance of Indian students’ college calculus, and the nature of effect on Indian learners having calculus in school on their procedural and conceptual performance. For this extensive study, data were collected from PGTs and Assistant/Associate Professors having more than 8 years of calculus teaching experience drawn from 76 different schools, colleges and universities belonging to 23 different states and union territories of India. A total of 323 teachers took part in this study. Multiple methods of data collection were used including naturalistic observation, structured interviews, classroom observations, focussed group interviews, and informal discussions, and these were done both before and after the classroom teaching. The researcher transcribed the interviews, identified emerging and repeated themes, and used NVivo and Concordance software to conduct content and classroom discourse analysis, with simple counting methods and applied grounded theory approach using which empirical data were thematically categorized and in the process of it, employed the induction approach. The researcher analyzed the transcripts using N5 (NUD*IST 5.0; QSR International, Melbourne) with the grounded theory approach. This research study is purely qualitative in nature and its framework lies within the interpretative paradigm. The current study was carried out between June 2016 and March 2019. Findings indicate that there are lots of cognitive obstacles in understanding the concepts inbuilt in calculus: two of the prominent ones that came out from the study include the one related to intuitions and the other related to linguistic/representational aspects.

Background: There has been an unabated rise in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) worldwide. Although T2D is highly preventable, these trends suggest that a paradigm change is much needed in the way both clinicians and policy makers view what effective T2D strategies conventionally entail. Hence, it is becoming increasingly clear that T2D patients require more than just a pharmacological approach to their disease. Evidence indicate that culturally specific mediators can help foster better self-management practices. We intend to discover psychosocial mediators that influence and support self-management beliefs in T2D patients. Methods: We adopted the grounded theory approach to guide in-depth interviews with T2D patients and health care professionals (HCP) at a regional primary care clinic in Malaysia. Twenty-four T2D patients and 10 HCPs were recruited through purposive sampling method to examine the inner psychological narratives about how they perceive and what they believe beliefs about the disease. Two focus group discussions were also were conducted for data triangulation. Results: A functional framework for the psychosocial mediators influencing self-management beliefs in T2D patients was designed and characterized by 4 major processes: (1) health promotion, (2) personal expectations, (3) person-centered care, and (4) psychosocial support. The fulfillment of patients’ personal expectations is central to better self-management beliefs. Conclusions: Positive emotional states are important in providing a positive environment to nurture self-management practices. A person-centered consultation that focuses on empathy and cultural sensitivities has the potential to foster behavioral change required to sustain self-care practices.

ABSTRACTObjective:This study aimed to generate an explanatory model of the coping strategies that adolescents employ to manage the stressors they experience in the final months of their ill parent's life and shortly after their death.Method:The sample included 26 families of adolescents with a parent receiving care in a large hospice program in northeastern Ohio. A semistructured interview was conducted with 14 ill parents, 17 well parents/guardians, and 30 of their adolescent children before the parent's death and, additionally, with 6 of these families after the death. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using a grounded-theory approach.Results:The participants described two worlds that constituted the lives of the adolescents: the well world of normal adolescence and the ill world of having a parent near the end of life. The adolescents experienced a common challenge of living in two worlds and responded to the challenge with a process we labeled “managing two worlds.” Five stages through which adolescents manage their worlds were identified: keeping the ill world and the well world separate; having the ill world intrude into the well world; moving between the ill world and the well world; being immersed in the ill world; and returning to the well world having been changed by the ill world.Significance of results:The explanatory model of “managing two worlds” outlines a complex and nuanced process that changes over time. The model can be used by health professionals who seek to help adolescents navigate this critical time when their parents are dying or have recently died. These results can also be used to inform the development of interventions that assist families with strategies tailored to an adolescent's specific needs. Future research should investigate associations among the process of “managing two worlds” and outcomes related to adolescent bereavement.

ABSTRACTMany older adults experience what is clinically recognised as frailty but little is known about the perceptions of, and attitudes regarding, being frail. This qualitative study explored adults' perceptions of frailty and their beliefs concerning its progression and consequences. Twenty-nine participants aged 66–98 with varying degrees of frailty, residing either in their homes or institutional settings, participated in semi-structured interviews. Verbatim transcripts were analysed using a Grounded Theory approach. Self-identifying as ‘frail’ was perceived by participants to be strongly related to their own levels of health and engagement in social and physical activity. Being labelled by others as ‘old and frail’ contributed to the development of a frailty identity by encouraging attitudinal and behavioural confirmation of it, including a loss of interest in participating in social and physical activities, poor physical health and increased stigmatisation. Using both individual and social context, different strategies were used to resist self-identification. The study provides insights into older adults' perceptions and attitudes regarding frailty, including the development of a frailty identity and its relationship with activity levels and health. The implications of these findings for future research and practice are discussed.
