Health professionals routinely draw for patients, carers and colleagues as part of clinical communication to describe, explain and record. The drawings that result are either discarded, kept by patients or become part of a patient’s records. Some health professionals also draw when engaged in teaching and training in clinical contexts. Very little literature has acknowledged that such drawing regularly takes place and there does not appear to have been formal research into the reasons, benefits or disadvantages of these drawing practices. This study examined the perceptions of seven UK health professionals, from different specialties, who draw as part of their daily professional practice. In this qualitative study, the researchers carried out in-depth individual interviews, during which they invited participants to make exemplar drawings. The findings included that for nearly all, drawing was a flexible, sensitive and spontaneous method of visualising information. In making explanatory drawings for patients, health professionals were taking care to provide information in a way that was accessible and personally relevant. While one participant indicated that ‘live’ drawing had been superseded by professionally illustrated material and video in their profession, the other participants believed that drawing remained the more practical, effective and emotionally appropriate method of visualising explanations. Health professionals convey and clarify knowledge for one another through drawing, yet it does not appear to be included in their training. Drawing was also described as useful and often pleasurable for the professionals themselves. Further research is now needed to explore patients’ perspectives on such drawing practices.

This qualitative study explored the perceived challenges ELL teachers encounter when using and implementing digital games as educational tools. Six ELL teachers were interviewed, and a phenomenological lens was used to analyze the data. The synthesis of textural and structural meanings and essences as a last step of phenomenological data analysis lead to two major findings of ELL teachers' experiences with digital games: logistical and pedagogical. The findings indicate that there is a lack of resources, support, time, and overwhelming choices that characterize the logistical challenges. On the other hand, ELL teachers teaching philosophy, curriculum, and training highlights the pedagogical challenge of incorporating digital games.

This qualitative study aimed to find the values and principles steering health professionals' practice, in order to reach the values guiding humanization. The study took place between October and November 2005, when 17 professionals from a multiprofessional team at a hospital in the South of Brazil were interviewed in three different samples. The methodology used for comparative data analysis and interpretation was based on Grounded Theory, resulting in the creation of a theoretical model, guided by "humanizing care through the valuation of the human being". Data demonstrated that new competencies can be developed, which are capable of provoking a resignification of values and principles guiding humanization, with a view to reaching personal/professional accomplishments through work, allying technical and human skills in professional practice and experiencing humanized care.

The study seeks to investigate aspects of sexuality of women with breast cancer interned. The emergence of the study took place at the time of my professional practice where I came across patient dialogues, and health professionals with the behavior of women in different times, having sexual practice and professional assistants, on the other hand the kind of suppressed such an attitude as well as the patients more “excited” In the context of health, the educational process consists much more than the simple act of teaching. The client, who is often mistakenly called a passive individual, is a key player in the care process, since we already know that the process of health care is dynamic and requires the participation of both parties, whether caregiver or individual who will receive the care.

Research suggests that debriefing is the most important component of simulation. Debriefing is the time when participants think over and reflect on what happened during the simulated experience. The aim of this research is to gain insight into the experience of facilitating debriefing following a simulated experience in a tertiary health care setting. This qualitative study was guided by phenomenology, as developed by Heidegger and Gadamer, and included 10 health professionals (nurses, doctors, and a midwife) debriefing simulation experiences. Data were collected through individual interviews and analysed through iterative re-writing and the generation of three stories as getting started; supporting the debrief to unfold, and knowing how to end. This study affirmed the role of the facilitator in debriefing following simulated experiences. The facilitator’s role includes leading the dialogue beyond “talk” and into “learning”. The art of asking a question, working with silence, and enabling learning all require skill. Through experience, facilitators learn to respond to whatever unfolds in the session. This study contributed detail of what facilitators do to draw out thinking, which confirmed their essential role. Facilitators cannot prepare a script for debriefing beforehand but must rely on their debriefing know-how to respond in each debrief. The facilitator’s know-how is therefore central to debriefing following simulated experiences.

ABSTRACT Objective: To interpret the experience of the elderly with mental disorder in the use of psychotropic medicines. Method: Qualitative study in the interpretative modality, supported by the Grounded Theory. It was carried out from interviews with 16 elderly people with mental disorder and six relatives, totaling 22 participants. Results: In the experience of the use of psychotropic medicines, the elderly with mental disorders become aware of their condition, attribute meaning and establish strategies for the correct use. On the other hand, they express their dissatisfaction with being dependent on psychotropic medicines to live without symptoms, face their side effects and do not always use them correctly. Conclusion: The use of psychotropic medicines is a priority in the life of the elderly and, in view of the fragilities found, it is necessary a continuous monitoring of health professionals.

Students showing core symptoms of ADHD face additional challenges in school. This study asks how children and adolescents with inattentiveness, high levels of activity or impulsiveness perceive their symptom-like behaviour and how this may affect their identity, friendships and well-being. Researchers conducted individual interviews with 12 students (10–16 years) selected to attend a school programme aimed at improving their concentration. Six students had an ADHD diagnosis. The interviews were analysed, guided by theoretical reading. The students’ narratives fit a discursive perspective showing that identity developed through interactions with others. All students told about their disturbing concentration problems. Students disliked having a short fuse and talking before thinking, and they admitted that impulsive behaviour could threaten their friendships. On the other hand, students with high levels of activity described this as fun in interaction with friends. Nobody mentioned that concentration problems affected friendships, and none of the core symptoms seemed to influence well-being. There were no obvious differences between students with or without an ADHD diagnosis. The students’ stories, therefore, show that teachers should know their students with inattentiveness, hyperactivity or impulsiveness individually to learn about their challenges and preferences.

ABSTRACTObjective: to investigate the knowledge of young people about sexuality in old age, from their understanding about sexuality and aging. Methods: this is an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative study from camping approach results, performed at the Santo Amaro campus, of the University of Pernambuco, with 33 students, whose data were collected with interviews scripts. This study was approved by the Committee of Ethics in Research of the Pernambuco University (protocol number 198/06). Results: on the other hand, others associated aging hopelessness and death. With regard to sexuality, many limited the meaning of the sexual act, while a minority considered all forms of expressing feelings. In relation to sexuality in the elderly, many saw it as something natural, not running away from the understanding that sexuality is only sex. Conclusion: results showed us the need to discuss the issue in a comprehensive and contextualized within the university, since health professionals in dealing with individuals of different ages need to have an understanding and attitude toward the subject. Descriptors: sexuality; aging; aged; young adult; nursing.   RESUMOObjetivo: investigar o conhecimento dos jovens a respeito da sexualidade na velhice, a partir de seu entendimento sobre sexualidade e envelhecimento. Abstract The use of dietary supplements integrates one of the strategies physical activity practicers employ to manage their bodies in contemporary times. This research sought to identify and analyze the multiple uses of dietary supplements done by these practicers and what such uses represent for them with regard to managing their own bodies. A qualitative study was conducted based on the application of online questionnaires to 67 physical activity practicers who frequent gyms. There was also an observation of the groups dynamics in the internet. The resulting empirical material was analyzed using content analysis. Results indicated that part of these practicers believe that dietary supplements aid in gaining muscular mass and improve performance. Furthermore, some of them question the effects of such products on the body although they claim that dietary supplements facilitate diets or should be used only when prescribed by health professionals. In conclusion, there are different ways of using these products, which are often evaluated by consumers.

Effective communication skills are important in the health care setting in order to develop rapport and trust with patients, provide reassurance, assess patients effectively and provide education in a way that patients easily understand (Candlin and Candlin, 2003). However with many nurses from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds being recruited to fill the workforce shortfall in Australia, communication across cultures with the potential for miscommunication and ensuing risks to patient safety has gained increasing focus in recent years (Shakya and Horsefall, 2000; Chiang and Crickmore, 2009). This paper reports on the first phase of a study that examines intercultural nurse patient communication from the perspective of four Registered Nurses from CALD backgrounds working in Australia. Five interrelating themes that were derived from thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews are discussed. The central theme of ‘adjustment’ was identified as fundamental to the experiences of the RNs and this theme interrelated with each of the other themes that emerged: professional experiences with communication, ways of showing respect, displaying empathy, and vulnerability.
