The Effect of Fin–Clipping on the Cruising Speed of Goldfish and Coho Salmon Fry

Goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) and coho salmon fry (Oncorhynchus kisutch Walbaum) were acclimatized to temperatures of 20 °C. and 3 °C. respectively. The fish were placed, one at a time, once a day, for ten days, in a rotating annular chamber and the cruising speed was found. Then various fins were removed and the fish were given ten more trials. The mean cruising speeds before and after clipping were compared. The clipped fish suffered no loss in ability to swim at a constant rate. The data suggest that, for fish of a given weight and length, cruising speed is slightly improved by clipping. Any increased mortality in marked fish is due to loss of stability and control rather than loss in ability to swim steadily.

Abstract Objectives Postmenopausal women are at greater risk of depression. Depression may negatively affect the quality of life of women. An emotional freedom technique (EFT) is an evidence-based therapy combining cognitive and exposure components with acupressure. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of EFT on depression in postmenopausal women. Methods This was a randomized controlled trial in which 88 women with mild to moderate depression recruited from a menopausal clinic in Ahvaz, Iran, and randomly assigned into two groups of EFT (n=44) and control for sham therapy (n=44). Women in the EFT group received two sessions of training and asked to continue EFT for 8 weeks, one time per day. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI2) completed by women before and after the intervention. The control group received training on sham acupressure points similar to the intervention group. Data collected using a demographic and BDI2. Women requested to complete the BDI2 before and after the intervention. The independent t-test, chi-square, and ANCOVA were used to analyze data. Results The mean depression score in the intervention group reduced from 20.93 ± 4.6 to 10.96 ± 4.38 in comparison to the control group that reduced from 19.18 ± 2.79 to 17.01 ± 6.05 after intervention (p=0.001). After the 8 week intervention, the frequency of moderate depression decreased from 56.8 to 9.35% in the intervention and from 50 to 29.5% in the control group. In total, 63.4 and 34.15% in the intervention and control groups were free of depression respectively after the intervention (p<0.001). Conclusions The results of this study showed that using EFT for 8 weeks could significantly reduce the mean score of depression in postmenopausal women. Using this method in public health centers for postmenopausal women is recommended.

ABSTRACT Plasma levels of testosterone (T) and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) were determined by radioimmunoassay in 29 patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and in 56 control men of various ages. No significant difference was found in T, DHT nor DHT/T ratio between BPH and control subjects of similar age. Plasma DHT was higher in the prostatic than in the peripheral veins in 8/9 patients with BPH during laparotomy, indicating a prostatic secretion of DHT. No difference in the mean T nor the mean DHT was found in peripheral plasma before and after adenomectomy.

Objective: Findings suggest dissatisfaction of half of the cancer patients regarding pain and anxiety management. This study aimed to determine the effect of reflexology on the intensity of pain and anxiety among patients with metastatic cancer hospitalized inadulthematology ward.  Methods: In this study, the samples were selected from adult hematology ward in Baghaei 2 hospital in Ahwaz, Iran, according to the inclusion criteria. They were then assigned into treatment and control groups. In the treatment group, reflexology protocol was performed following manual reflexology method by Fr Josef Eugster based on Ingham method on the patient’s bed. In the control group, sole touching was used as the placebo. Reflexology was performed for three days, 30 min per day. Spielberger questionnaire were provided to the samples and completed in the first and third days, and Spielberger questionnaire was provided to the samples and completed. The data obtained from this study were then analyzed by SPSS 20.Results: The two groups did not show a significant difference in terms of demographic characteristics (p>0.05). Based on the obtained results, it was found that in the test group, there was a significant difference between the mean intensity of pain before and after the treatment across all 3 days as well as the mean anxiety of the 1st and 3rd days (p<0.05). However, in the control group, there was no significant difference in terms of mean pain intensity before and after the treatment across 3 days (p>0.05). No significant difference was observed between the mean anxiety of the 1st and 3rd days either (p>0.05).Conclusion: Considering the findings of this research, it can be concluded that reflexology has a positive effect on mitigating the intensity of pain and anxiety in metastatic cancer patients. Therefore, it is recommended that nurses employed in cancer centers benefit from the findings of this research to further help patients with cancer. It is also suggested that further research be conducted on the effect of reflexology on the pain and anxiety of other patients.

To determine acute toxicity to juvenile (1) pink, chum, coho, and sockeye salmon, (2) Dolly Varden char, and (3) rainbow trout, 2,4-D acid, butyl and isooctyl esters were tested in southeast Alaska. A comparable test was made in Oregon using coho salmon fingerlings. The mean percent mortality after 96 h and the highest concentration of herbicide that did not produce any mortality were determined for each formulation tested.At less than 50 ppm 2,4-D acid produced no mortality except in pink salmon fry. The butyl ester was most toxic causing nearly complete mortality in all species at concentrations > 1.0 ppm and the isooctyl ester least toxic of the ester formulations. Alaskan and Oregon coho fingerlings were similar in their responses to 2,4-D acid, butyl and isooctyl esters. The toxicities of three different formulations of isooctyl ester, a PGBE ester, and butyl ester to Alaskan coho fingerlings were also determined. There were few or no differences in toxicity among isooctyl ester formulations. The butyl and PGBE esters were similar in toxicity.

Standard oxygen consumption of goldfish was estimated in relation to weight and temperature from simultaneous measurements of routine oxygen uptake and spontaneous activity. The relation between weight and standard oxygen consumption was expressed as a logarithmic linear regression. For a given shift in temperature, the proportionate change in standard oxygen consumption appears to be independent of weight. The mean slope of the regressions was found to be 0.850.The standard rate of a 100-g goldfish increased linearly, on a semilogarithmic grid, over the temperature range of 10 to 35 °C. The estimates found in the present study were less than the lowest applicable values that could be found in the literature.The average routine rate of oxygen consumption suggests that goldfish display a considerable amount of spontaneous activity despite the elimination of external stimuli.

Abstract Background The knowledge and attitude of health care providers are important and influential factors in providing care services to the elderly and need to be considered during the training course. Simulation in geriatric nursing education can be an opportunity for learners to experience the restrictions of the elderly. The present study was conducted to determine the effect of training through simulation on the attitude and knowledge of nursing students in elderly care. Methods This study was quasi-experimental with two experimental and control groups of pre and post-test, which was conducted on 70 nursing students of the 5th semester (two groups of 35 people). For the experimental group, the elderly simulation suit was worn for two hours, which was designed by the researcher and created sensory, physical, and motor restrictions similar to the elderly for students. Before and after the study, Kogan’s attitudes toward older people scale and Palmore’s “facts on aging quiz” were completed by students. The data were analyzed using an independent t-test and paired t-test using SPSS version 16 software. Results The mean scores of students’ knowledge in the experimental and control groups had no significant difference at the beginning of the study (p < 0.05). But the mean scores of knowledge in the experimental group before and after the intervention was (9.2 ± 2.6) and (15.3 ± 3.5), respectively, and in the control group before and after the intervention was (10.4 ± 2.9) and (11.3 ± 2.6), respectively, which had a statistically significant difference (p = 0.0001). The mean scores of students’ attitudes in the experimental and control groups had no significant difference at the beginning of the study (p < 0.05). The mean scores of attitude in the experimental group before and after the intervention was (114.69 ± 8.4) and (157.31 ± 10.7), respectively and in the control group before and after the intervention was (113.34 ± 13.6) and (108.5 ± 16.6), respectively, which was significantly different (p = 0.0001). Conclusions Based on the findings, the experience of aging restrictions through simulation has improved the knowledge and attitude of nursing students towards the elderly. Nursing education requires the growth of attitudinal skills, individuals’ beliefs, and creating empathy among them, so creating simulation opportunities can assist nursing students in the educational processes.

Objective: Assessment and management of pain in patients under artificial respiration and hospitalized in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are difficult, and is less considered by physicians and nurses. This study aims to determine the effect of classical music on physiological characteristics, and observational and behavioral measures of pain in unconscious patients admitted to ICUs. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study conducted in 2019 on 30 unconscious patients admitted to ICU of Shohadaye Haft-e-Tir Hospital in Tehran, Iran, who were selected using a convenience sampling method, and divided into two groups of intervention and control. After obtaining a written informed consent from patients to participate, they completed a demographic/physiological form, Critical Care Pain Observation Tool (COPT) and Behavioral Pain Scale (BPC). Collected data were analyzed in SPSS V. 22 software by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The Mean±SD age of patients in the intervention and control groups was 40.33±14.01 and 46±15.70 years, respectively. Comparison of physiological characteristics before and after the intervention showed no statistically significant difference in any groups except in Glasgow Coma Scale score (P<0.05). The mean pretest and posttest COPT scores in the intervention group were 3.73±0.94 and 1.96±1.32, respectively, and their mean pretest and posttest BPC scores were 5.94±1.39 and 4.22±1.08, respectively. Comparing the mean COPT and BPC scores before and after music therapy showed a statistically significant difference in the intervention group (P<0.05). Conclusion: It seems that classical music can reduce observational and behavioral measures of pain in unconscious patients hospitalized in ICUs. More studies are recommended for examining the effect of classical music on physiological characteristics of these patients.

Background. One of the most common surgical complications is nausea. Regarding the contradictory findings on the effect of aromatherapy with peppermint on the severity of nausea, in the present study, we aimed at comparing the effect of aromatherapy with 10% and 30% peppermint essential oils on the severity of nausea in surgical patients. Methods. This single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted at the surgical ward of Imam Reza Hospital in Kermanshah, Iran. A total of 120 patients undergoing abdominal surgery were randomly divided into three groups of 10% peppermint, 30% peppermint, and control (40 patients in each group) using a random number table. In each of the intervention groups, 0.2 ml of 10% and 30% peppermint essential oil was inhaled. In the control group, the same amount of distilled water colored with green food coloring was inhaled. The severity of nausea was measured by nausea visual analog scale (NVAS) before and 10 minutes after the intervention. Results. In the 10% peppermint group, the mean severity of nausea before the intervention was 52.3 ± 13.7 out of 100, which reduced to 40.5 ± 13.5 after the intervention (p<0.001). In the 30% peppermint group, the mean severity scores of nausea before and after the intervention were 60.2 ± 15.0 and 39.7 ± 12.4, respectively (p<0.001). In the control group, the mean severity scores of nausea before and after the intervention was not statistically significant. There was no significant difference between the two intervention groups in terms of the mean severity of nausea after the intervention. Conclusions. It can be concluded that 10% and 30% peppermint essential oils are equally effective on the severity of nausea.

Abstract Objectives Acute myocardial infarction (MI) and hospitalization are one of the most stressful situations for many patients. Aromatherapy is a branch of the complementary medicine that is effective in anxiety. The present study aims to determine the effect of aromatherapy with rose essential oil (REO) on apparent anxiety in patients with acute MI. Methods This randomized clinical trial was carried out on patients with acute MI admitted to the cardiac ward of Heshmatieh Hospital in Sabzevar. Eighty patients were randomly assigned to two aromas and placebo groups, who received three drops of REO or placebo by inhalation three times a day for 3 days. Before and after the intervention, patients’ anxiety levels were measured by the Spielberger questionnaire. Data were analyzed by chi-square and the independent and paired and t-tests. Results Before the intervention, the mean of apparent anxiety was not significantly different in the intervention and control groups (48.44 ± 3.81 and 51.38 ± 7.21, respectively, p=0.16) while this parameter was significant after the intervention in both experimental groups (47.27 ± 7.11 and 44.16 ± 4.63, respectively, p=0.000), with a reduction in the mean of apparent anxiety in the intervention group. Moreover, the results of paired t-test revealed that the anxiety scores decreased significantly in the test group before and after the intervention (51.38 ± 7.21 and 44.16 ± 4.63, p=0.000). Conclusions Considering the positive effects of REO used in this study to reduce anxiety in patients with acute MI, the use of REO is recommended as a complementary treatment to reduce anxiety in these patients.

Goldfish injected intraperitoneally with 203Hg(NO3)2 lost mercury at an apparent constant rate resulting in a biological half-life of 568 h. Correlated with this loss was a linear increase in the amount of mercury in the water.The mercury-203 content in the tissues displayed four different responses.(1) Gall bladder, gonad, and spleen tissues showed no significant regressions.(2) Eye, kidney, and intestinal tissue manifested significant losses of mercury, but the rate of loss was not significantly different from that of the body as a whole.(3) Gill, heart, skin, and swim bladder tissues lost mercury at rates faster than the body as a whole.(4) Brain, liver, muscle, and head kidney tissues showed no significant losses of mercury.
