AbstractWe study an $$SO(2)\times SO(2)\times SO(2)\times SO(2)$$ S O ( 2 ) × S O ( 2 ) × S O ( 2 ) × S O ( 2 ) truncation of four-dimensional $$N=4$$ N = 4 gauged supergravity coupled to six vector multiplets with $$SO(4)\times SO(4)$$ S O ( 4 ) × S O ( 4 ) gauge group and find a new class of holographic RG flows and supersymmetric Janus solutions. In this truncation, there is a unique $$N=4$$ N = 4 supersymmetric $$AdS_4$$ A d S 4 vacuum dual to an $$N=4$$ N = 4 SCFT in three dimensions. In the presence of the axion, the RG flows generally preserve $$N=2$$ N = 2 supersymmetry while the supersymmetry is enhanced to $$N=4$$ N = 4 for vanishing axion. We find solutions interpolating between the $$AdS_4$$ A d S 4 vacuum and singular geometries with different residual symmetries. We also show that all the singularities are physically acceptable within the framework of four-dimensional gauged supergravity. Accordingly, the solutions are holographically dual to RG flows from the $$N=4$$ N = 4 SCFT to a number of non-conformal phases in the IR. We also find $$N=4$$ N = 4 and $$N=2$$ N = 2 Janus solutions with $$SO(4)\times SO(4)$$ S O ( 4 ) × S O ( 4 ) and $$SO(2)\times SO(2)\times SO(3)\times SO(2)$$ S O ( 2 ) × S O ( 2 ) × S O ( 3 ) × S O ( 2 ) symmetries, respectively. The former is obtained from a truncation of all scalars from vector multiplets and can be regarded as a solution of pure $$N=4$$ N = 4 gauged supergravity. On the other hand, the latter is a genuine solution of the full matter-coupled theory. These solutions describe conformal interfaces in the $$N=4$$ N = 4 SCFT with $$N=(4,0)$$ N = ( 4 , 0 ) and $$N=(2,0)$$ N = ( 2 , 0 ) supersymmetries.

A Privacy Questionnaire was administered to 118 male and 142 female college students to determine differences in the patterns of privacy preferences between the sexes. The questionnaire contained factor scales for measuring six independent types of privacy. t-tests showed that the means for women were significantly higher than those for men in their preferences for Intimacy with Family and Intimacy with Friends. On the other hand, for Isolation the mean for men was significantly higher than that for women. There were no significant differences between the means for the two sexes on the remaining three dimensions, Reserve, Solitude, and Anonymity.

Internet users have given two existing phrases in Chinese, “Jiang Zhen” and “Lao Siji” new second definitions. “Jiang Zhen” which exists in some southern Chinese dialects is gradually becoming a new Mandarin phrase. The phrase’s meaning is being transformed and this new meaning is being used by Chinese netizens. This new and transformed meaning has spread quickly throughout the internet. On the other hand, “Lao Siji” now has several new meanings and has become more popular in online and real life conversations. From the three dimensions of language namely semantics, syntax and pragmatics, the two new phrases have their intrinsic connotations. Currently, different sections of the public hold different attitudes to these two new phrases, so their vitality is still waiting for the test of time.

The possibility of combating infectious diseases with chemotherapeutically active substances depends to a large extent on the structure of the pathogenic organism. Apart from the cure of contagious pleuro-pneumonia in horses with neosalvarsan, we have, as yet, no chemotherapeutic substance which is active in virus diseases. The position is scarcely better when we turn to bacterial infections due to cocci and bacilli. These two types of infective organisms occupy the lowest level in the scale of micro-organisms. On the other hand, the spirochætes, which also belong to the bacteria group, and, still more so, those causal organisms belonging to the protozoa, represent relatively highly differentiated species, and the more highly developed a pathogenic organism is, the more points for attack it appears to offer to the action of chemotherapeutic substances. It is, therefore, not to be wondered at that the best results with chemotherapeutically active substances have been obtained in spirochætal diseases (syphilis, relapsing fever, frambœsia, etc.), and above all, in protozoal diseases. There is scarcely a protozoal disease of man which cannot be cured nowadays by early treatment with the appropriate synthetic drug. (Sleeping sickness, malaria, amœbic dysentery, leishmaniasis.) Epizootics resembling human diseases, as for example, trypanoses, are also relatively easily dealt with by the same drugs as have been found of value in the treatment of disease in man. On the other hand, there has been a lack of success, up to the present, in the treatment of those diseases of animals which are not generally related to the tropical diseases of man. The most important of these epizootics are the piroplasmoses, which are caused by babesiæ and theileriæ and which are found, not only in tropical and subtropical regions, but also in temperate zones. In this paper the discovery of a new remedy against piroplasmosis will be reported (acaprin). Further, advice will be given of a new class of substances, which have an actual chemotherapeutic action in streptococcal infections (prontosil, prontosil S), so that one can hope to be able in the future also to attack bacterial infections due to cocci chemotherapeutically.

In this paper, we will give a short review on quantum spring, which is a Casimir effect from the helix boundary condition that proposed in our earlier works. The Casimir force parallel to the axis of the helix behaves very much like the force on a spring that obeys the Hooke's law when the ratio r of the pitch to the circumference of the helix is small, but in this case, the force comes from a quantum effect, so we would like to call it quantum spring. On the other hand, the force perpendicular to the axis decreases monotonously with the increasing of the ratio r. Both forces are attractive and their behaviors are the same in two and three dimensions.

Inspired by a new class of walking technicolor models recently proposed using higher-dimensional technifermions, we consider the oblique corrections from heavy nondegenerate fermions with two classes of higher-dimensional representations of the electroweak gauge group itself. One is chiral SM-like, and the other is vector-like. In both cases, we obtain explicit expressions for S, T, U in terms of the fermion masses. We find that to keep the T parameter ultraviolet-finite, there must be a stringent constraint on the mass nondegeneracy of a heavy fermion multiplet.

In this paper, we present and study some of the basic properties of the new class of sets called weakly b-closed sets and weakly b- open sets in fuzzy neutrosophic bi-topological spaces. We referred to some results related to the new definitions, which we taked the case of equal in the definition of b-sets instead of subset. Then, we discussed the relations between the new defined sets by hand and others fuzzy neutrosophic sets which were studied before us on the other hand on fuzzy neutrosophic bi-topological spaces. Then, we have studied some of characteristics and some relations are compared with necessary examples.

How do human and landscape histories reciprocally affect each other? Can we distinguish between deliberate and unintended anthropic transformations of the landscape? This chapter summarizes evidence from pre-Columbian Amazonia in order to discuss the relation between three dimensions of anthropic landscape transformations: landscaping, landscape legacies, and landesque capital. Conflation between these three categories can lead to theoretical road closures and certainly risks oversimplifying both causality and consequence when anthropic landscape modifications are considered. On the other hand, paying attention to their differences defines a rich field of research in which historical ecology, earth-scientific thinking, and human niche construction theory converge.

Abstract Mixtures of butadiene and dimethylbutadiene with varying quantities of styrene and acrylonitrile were copolymerized under various catalytic conditions at 100° C. The formation of cyclic dimers from dienes and vinyl compounds is, in some cases, much more pronounced than the dimerization of the dienes alone. Since the latter is also a kind of Diels-Alder reaction, a series with increasing dienophilic properties can be established from a comparison of the yields of cyclic dimers. From solubility and swelling experiments it is evident that the polymers prepared from butadiene and the vinyl compounds and those from dimethylbutadiene and acrylonitrile are true copolymers. The mechanical properties of the copolymers from butadiene and increasing amounts of a vinyl compound change gradually from those of a rubber to those of the polyvinyl compound. The copolymers from a mixture containing 30 per cent styrene or acrylonitrile are very similar to Buna-S and Perbunan, respectively. Copolymers of the same composition from dimethylbutadiene and acrylonitrile, on the other hand, form a new class of thermoplastics with a much higher temperature of elasticity.

This article explores the complex meanings embodied in memes featuring artwork as a juxtaposition between fine arts and participatory culture. A qualitative textual analysis of 119 meme instances identified three dimensions of artwork that can be echoed in digital memes: the content, the form, and the artist. Consistent with the metaphor of communication as transmission, the mimesis of content uses artwork as a device for political expression. The mimesis of form and of the artist, on the other hand, provoke a response that emphasizes the aesthetics over the narrative, albeit for contrasting goals: while the former conveys a communal partaking of iconic gestures, which highlights what Carey depicted as the ritual view of communication, the latter distinguishes the imitators as individuals, thus comparing them to the original creator. This article demonstrates the memetic manipulation of fine art as a dual agent of individual and communal expression.

The proteins in the hinge ligaments of molluscan bivalves were subjected to chemotaxonomic studies according to their amino acid compositions. The hinge-ligament protein is a new class of structure proteins, and this is the first attempt to introduce chemical taxonomy into the systematics of bivalves. The hinge-ligament proteins from morphologically close species, namely mactra (superfamily Mactracea) or scallop (family Pectinidae) species, showed high intraspecific homology in their compositions. On the other hand, inconsistent results were obtained with two types of ligament proteins in pearl oyster species (genus Pinctada). The results of our chemotaxonomic analyses were sometimes in good agreement with the morphological classifications and sometimes inconsistent, implying a complicated phylogenetic relationship among the species.
