In this paper, interatomic interactions, zone-center phonon frequencies, mechanical properties, sound velocities and Debye temperature of indium thiospinels MIn2S4(M = Cd, Zn and Mg) have been calculated using rigid-ion model. We found that the first neighbor interaction is stronger than the second neighbor interaction. We have compared our calculated results with the available experimental and theoretical data and find good agreement with the experimental results.

The ground structure, elastic and electronic properties of several phases of NbN are determined based on ab initio total-energy calculations within the framework of density functional theory. Among the five crystallographic structures that have been investigated, the hexagonal phases have been found to be more stable than the cubic ones. The calculated equilibrium structural parameters are in good agreement with the available experimental results. The elastic constants of five structures in NbN are calculated, which are in consistent with the obtained theoretical and experimental data. The corresponding Debye temperature and elastic ansitropies are also obtained. The Debye temperature of NbN in various structures consistent with available experimental and theoretical data, in which the Debye temperature of δ-NbN is highest. The anisotropies of ZB-NbN, NaCl-NbN, CsCl-NbN gradually increases. For hexagonal structure, the anisotropies of ε-NbN are stronger than that of δ-NbN. The electronic structures of NbN under pressure are investigated. It is found that NbN have metallization and the hybridizations of atoms in NbN under pressure become stronger.

The mechanical behavior, sound velocities and Debye temperature of beryllium-selenide (BeSe) semiconductor under pressure up to 50 GPa have been estimated using the structural parameters and elastic constants of Fanjie Kong and Gang Jiang (Physica B 404 (2009) 3935-3940). The Pugh ratio, the directional dependence of elastic wave velocity, the longitudinal, transverse and average sound velocities, and the Debye temperature are successfully predicted and analyzed in comparison with the available theoretical data. The analysis of the Pugh ratio indicates that this compound is prone to brittle behavior. Our obtained results of the longitudinal, transverse and average sound velocities at high pressure indicate that these of Kong and Jiang (Physica B 404 (2009) 3935-3940) are not correctly predicted.

We have investigated the elastic and thermal properties of Sr 1-x Ca x RuO 3(0≤x ≤1) perovskite using a modified rigid ion model (MRIM). The trend of variation of our computed specific heat in the temperature range 1 K ≤ T ≤ 1000 K are in good agreement with corresponding experimental data for almost all the compositions (x). The specific heat found to increase with temperature from 1 K to 300 K, while they decrease with concentration (x) for these perovskite ruthenates. Besides, we have reported the thermal properties, like thermal expansion (α), molecular force constant (f), Reststrahlen frequency (υ), cohesive energy (ϕ), Debye temperature (θD) and Gruneisen parameter (γ).

Experimental and theoretical data are presented on the effect of plate buckling on the flow measurement accuracy of an orifice meter system. Tests were performed on plastically buckled orifice plates in an 8 in (203 mm) metering system using natural gas as the working fluid. The test pipe Reynolds numbers were 0.36 times 106 and 5.2 times 106. A method is also presented to predict the flow metering errors due to plate buckling, which gives good agreement with the experimental results obtained on plastically buckled plates. The theory is extended to cover the flow metering errors caused by the elastic deformation of orifice plates under normal working differential pressures. A formula is presented which relates the metering errors to the applied differential pressure and the mechanical properties of simply supported orifice plates.

This paper studies the effect of contact areas on the transient response of mechanical structures. Precisely, it investigates replacing the ordinary beam of a structure by two beams of half the thickness, which are joined by bolts. The response of these beams is controlled by adjusting the tightening of the connecting bolts and hence changing the magnitude of the induced frictional force between the two beams which affect the beams damping capacity. A cantilever of two beams joined together by bolts has been investigated numerically and experimentally. The numerical analysis was performed using ANSYS-Workbench version 17.2. A good agreement between the numerical and experimental results has been obtained. In general, results showed that the two beams vibrate independently when the bolts were loosed and the structure stiffness is about 20 N/m and the damping ratio is about 0.008. With increasing the bolts tightening, the stiffness and the damping ratio of the structure were also increased till they reach their maximum values when the tightening force equals to 8330 N, where the structure now has stiffness equals to 88 N/m and the damping ratio is about 0.062. Beyond this force value, increasing the bolts tightening has no effect on stiffness of the structure while the damping ratio is decreased until it returned to 0.008 when the bolts tightening becomes immense and the beams behave as one beam of double thickness.

An original poling method using purely optical means and based on a dual-frequency interference process is presented. We show that the coherent superposition of two beams at fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies results in a polar field with an irreducible rotational spectrum containing both a vector and an octupolar component. This enables the method to be applied even to molecules without a permanent dipole such as octupolar molecules. After a theoretical analysis of the process, we describe different experiments aiming at light-induced noncentrosymmetry performed respectively on one-dimensional Disperse Red 1 and octupolar Ethyl Violet molecules. Macroscopic octupolar patterning of the induced order is demonstrated in both transient and permanent regimes. Experimental results show good agreement with theory.

In this work, the effective mechanical reinforcement of polymeric nanocomposites containing spherical particle fillers is predicted based on a generalized analytical three-phase-series-parallel model, considering the concepts of percolation and the interfacial glassy region. While the concept of percolation is solely taken as a contribution of the filler-network, we herein show that the glassy interphase between filler and matrix, which is often in the nanometers range, is also to be considered while interpreting enhanced mechanical properties of particulate filled polymeric nanocomposites. To demonstrate the relevance of the proposed generalized equation, we have fitted several experimental results which show a good agreement with theoretical predictions. Thus, the approach presented here can be valuable to elucidate new possible conceptual routes for the creation of new materials with fundamental technological applications and can open a new research avenue for future studies.

Ductile iron camshafts low alloyed with 0.2 and 0.3 wt % vanadium were produced by one of the largest manufacturers of the ductile iron camshafts in México “ARBOMEX S.A de C.V” by a phenolic urethane no-bake sand mold casting method. During functioning, camshafts are subject to bending and torsional stresses, and the lobe surfaces are highly loaded. Thus, high toughness and wear resistance are essential for this component. In this work, two austempering ductile iron heat treatments were evaluated to increase the mechanical properties of tensile strength, hardness, and toughness of the ductile iron camshaft low alloyed with vanadium. The austempering process was held at 265 and 305 °C and austempering times of 30, 60, 90, and 120 min. The volume fraction of high-carbon austenite was determined for the heat treatment conditions by XRD measurements. The ausferritic matrix was determined in 90 min for both austempering temperatures, having a good agreement with the microstructural and hardness evolution as the austempering time increased. The mechanical properties of tensile strength, hardness, and toughness were evaluated from samples obtained from the camshaft and the standard Keel block. The highest mechanical properties were obtained for the austempering heat treatment of 265 °C for 90 min for the ADI containing 0.3 wt % V. The tensile and yield strength were 1200 and 1051 MPa, respectively, while the hardness and the energy impact values were of 47 HRC and 26 J; these values are in the range expected for an ADI grade 3.

The droplet deformation in dispersing units of high-pressure homogenizers (HPH) is examined experimentally and numerically. Due to the small size of common homogenizer nozzles, the visual analysis of the transient droplet generation is usually not possible. Therefore, a scaled setup was used. The droplet deformation was determined quantitatively by using a shadow imaging technique. It is shown that the influence of transient stresses on the droplets caused by laminar extensional flow upstream the orifice is highly relevant for the droplet breakup behind the nozzle. Classical approaches based on an equilibrium assumption on the other side are not adequate to explain the observed droplet distributions. Based on the experimental results, a relationship from the literature with numerical simulations adopting different models are used to determine the transient droplet deformation during transition through orifices. It is shown that numerical and experimental results are in fairly good agreement at limited settings. It can be concluded that a scaled apparatus is well suited to estimate the transient droplet formation up to the outlet of the orifice.

In order to research on mechanical properties of flexible suspension bridges, a geometric nonlinear analysis method was used to simulate on the experimental results, and carried on static loading test finally. In the loading test process, the deformations were measured in critical section of the suspension bridge, and displacement values of measured are compared with simulation values of the finite element simulation. Meanwhile the deformations of the main cable sag are observed under classification loading, the results show that the main cable sag increment is basically linear relationship with the increment of mid-span loading and tension from 3L/8 and 5L/8 to L/2 section, the main cable that increasing unit sag required mid-span loads and tension are gradually reduce in near L/4 and 3L/4 sections and gradually increase in near L/8 and 7L/8 sections and almost equal in near L/2, 3L/8 and 5L/8 sections. From the experimental results, the flexible suspension bridge possess good mechanical properties.
