Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is a herb which has been widely used in China. Salvianolic acid B (SalB) is an aqueous bioactive component derived from Danshen. Here, we aimed to estimate the effect of SalB on glycometabolism and lipid metabolism in rats and mice. We searched four databases until November 2020. The outcome measures were fasting blood glucose (FBG), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc). Twenty-four studies involving 547 animals were included. The meta-analysis showed effects of SalB on decreasing the level of FBG, TC, TG, LDLc, and increasing the level of HDLc compared with the control group. In conclusion, the result showed that SalB may regulate the glycometabolism and lipid metabolism in rats or mice, and may be a potential agent for treating metabolic diseases such as diabetes and hyperlipidemia.

The effectiveness of anthocyanins may differ according to their chemical structures; however, randomized clinical controlled trials (RCTs) or meta-analyses that examine the consequences of these structural differences have not been reported yet. In this meta-analysis, anthocyanins in test foods of 18 selected RCTs were categorized into three types: cyanidin-, delphinidin-, and malvidin-based. Delphinidin-based anthocyanins demonstrated significant effects on triglycerides (mean difference (MD): −0.24, p < 0.01), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (MD: −0.28, p < 0.001), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (MD: 0.11, p < 0.01), whereas no significant effects were observed for cyanidin- and malvidin-based anthocyanins. Although non-significant, favorable effects on total cholesterol (TC) and HDL-C were observed for cyanidin- and malvidin-based anthocyanins, respectively (both p < 0.1). The ascending order of effectiveness on TC and LDL-C was delphinidin-, cyanidin-, and malvidin-based anthocyanins, and the differences among the three groups were significant (both p < 0.05). We could not confirm the significant effects of each main anthocyanin on glucose metabolism; however, insulin resistance index changed positively and negatively with cyanidin- and delphinidin-based anthocyanins, respectively. Therefore, foods containing mainly unmethylated anthocyanins, especially with large numbers of OH groups, may improve glucose and lipid metabolism more effectively than those containing methylated anthocyanins.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of feeding diets enriched with fatty fish from the Amazon basin on lipid metabolism. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control group treated with commercial chow; Mapará group was fed diet enriched with Hypophthalmus edentatus; Matrinxã group was fed diet enriched with Brycon spp.; and, Tambaqui group was fed diet enriched with Colossoma macropomum. Rats with approximately 240g±0.60 of body weight were fed ad libitum for 30 days, and then were sacrificed for collection of whole blood and tissues. RESULTS: The groups treated with enriched diets showed a significant reduction in body mass and lipogenesis in the epididymal and retroperitoneal adipose tissues and carcass when compared with the control group. However, lipogenesis in the liver showed an increase in Matrinxã group compared with the others groups. The levels of serum triglycerides in the treated groups with Amazonian fish were significantly lower than those of the control group. Moreover, total cholesterol concentration only decreased in the group Matrinxã. High Density Lipoprotein cholesterol levels increased significantly in the Mapará and Tambaqui compared with control group and Matrinxã group. The insulin and leptin levels increased significantly in all treatment groups. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that diets enriched with fatty fish from the Amazon basin changed the lipid metabolism by reducing serum triglycerides and increasing high density lipoprotein-cholesterol in rats fed with diets enriched with Mapará, Matrinxã, and Tambaqui.

Previous studies have shown that marine drug propylene glycol alginate sodium sulfate (PSS) plays important roles in human diseases. This study mainly explored the effects of PSS on hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in diabetic db/db mouse models. The db/db mice were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=12), which were model control group (distilled water), positive control group (metformin), PSS low, medium, and high dose groups (PSS25, PSS50, PSS100) and normal control group (C57/BL, distilled water). The mice in each group had free diet and water for 90 days. During the experiment, food intake was recorded every day and body weight was recorded weekly. In addition, fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels were measured regularly. Finally, the contents of triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c) and total cholesterol (TC) in the serum of mice were determined. PSS can significantly reduce fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels in db/db mice, and improve insulin sensitivity. Moreover, PSS can reduce the fat accumulation of db/db mice and significantly improve the blood lipid level of db/db mice. PSS can significantly improve the symptoms of glucose and lipid metabolism disorders in db/db mice.

The study was conducted to investigate the effects of copper (Cu) sources and levels on mineral utilization, tissue copper residues, and lipid metabolism in Arbor Acres broilers. A total of 640 male broilers were randomly divided into 5 groups with 8 replicates per group and 16 broilers per replicate. The experiment was used in a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial experiment design. Broilers in the control group were fed a basal diet, and animals in the other four groups were fed basal diets supplemented with Cu from copper sulphate and copper methionine. Copper concentrations of the experimental diets were 20 and 40 mg Cu/kg dry matter. A metabolism trial of 4 days was conducted during the last week of experimental feeding. Neither Cu source nor Cu level affected average daily gain, average daily feed intake or feed gain ratio (P &gt; 0.05). Broilers fed 40 mg Cu/kg diets had lower plasma cholesterol than those in the control group (P &lt; 0.05). Copper supplementation decreased (P &lt; 0.05) plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol but did not alter plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations or plasma triglyceride concentrations. Copper sulphate supplementation increased (P &lt; 0.05) liver Cu but did not alter pectorals Cu, heart Cu, tibia Cu and tibia P. Broilers fed 40 mg/kg Cu from copper sulphate had a lower (P &lt; 0.05) tibia Ca level. The concentration of liver Cu in the broilers fed copper methionine diets was higher (P &lt; 0.05) than that in those fed copper sulphate. Compared with copper sulphate (100%), the relative bioavailability value of copper methionine was 117%. In conclusion, the relative bioavailability of copper methionine obtained in this study was greater than that of copper sulphate. Copper plays an important role in plasma lipids and in the digestion of dietary Ca in broiler chickens.

Background. Curcumin, a polyphenolic constituent from Curcuma longa, possesses antioxidant, hypolipidemic, and antidiabetic properties and has been reported to protect against diabetic kidney disease (DKD); however, the effect is inconsistent. Objective. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effect of curcumin supplementation on renal function, lipid profile, blood pressure, and glycemic control in DKD. Methods. A systematic and comprehensive literature search of interrelated randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, and ClinicalTrials.gov from inception to July 30, 2021. Two investigators independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to describe the effect sizes using a fixed-effect model. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA 14.0 and RevMan 5.3. Results. Five RCTs involving 290 participants with DKD were included. Curcumin supplementation significantly improved the serum creatinine (WMD: −0.16 mg/dL, 95% CI: −0.3 to −0.02, P  = 0.029, I2 = 0%, moderate certainty), total cholesterol (WMD: −10.13 mg/dL, 95% CI: −17.84 to −2.14, P  = 0.01, I2 = 0%, moderate certainty), systolic blood pressure (WMD: 3.94 mmHg, 95% CI: 1.86 to 6.01, P  < 0.01, I2 = 33.5%, moderate certainty), and fasting blood glucose (WMD: −8.29 mg/dL, 95% CI: −15.19 to −1.39, P  = 0.019, I2 = 43.7%, moderate certainty) levels; however, it had no significant effects on blood urea nitrogen, proteinuria, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and diastolic blood pressure levels. Conclusions. Curcumin may provide great potential effects against DKD. More large-scale and high-quality RCTs are required to confirm these findings.

Curcumin is the main secondary metabolites of Curcuma longa and other Curcuma spp, and has been reported to have some potential in preventing and treating some physiological disorders. This study investigated the effect curcumin in inhibiting high-fat diet and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in rats. Twenty-six male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (170-190 g) were randomly divided into a standard food pellet diet group (Control group), a high-fat diet and streptozotocin group (HF+STZ group), and a high-fat diet combined with curcumin and STZ group (HF+ Cur +STZ group). Compared with the HF+STZ group, the HF+Cur+STZ group exhibited significantly reduced fasting blood glucose (FBG), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), alanine aminotransferase (AST) and aspartate transaminase (ALT) levels, and liver coefficients; in the livers of these rats, the expression of malondialdehyde (MDA) and Bax was downregulated, whereas that of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Bcl-2 was upregulated. Moreover, the liver histology of these rats was improved and resembled that of the control rats. These results suggest that curcumin prevents high-fat diet and STZ-induced hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia, mainly via anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic mechanisms in the liver.

Purpose: Using meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of various long-term exercises (more than 4 weeks) on liver lipid metabolism of Chinese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and provides more targeted exercise recommendations.Methods: Four databases consisting of PubMed, Web of Science, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI) were searched up to May 2021. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were eligible, and the outcomes of body composition, lipid metabolism [including triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C)], and liver function [including alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST)] were used to assess the effectiveness of long-term exercise on Chinese patients with NAFLD.Results: Eleven articles with a total of 13 data points (involving 1,006 participants) satisfied the inclusion criteria and were pooled in the meta-analysis. The findings demonstrated that long-term exercise decreased the level of TG [−0.50, 95%CI (−0.64, −0.36)], TC [−0.55, 95%CI (−0.92, −0.18)], LDL-C [−0.29, 95%CI (−0.43, −0.15)], ALT [−3.45, 95%CI (−6.78, −0.12)], AST [−6.91, 95%CI (−10.00, −3.81)], and body mass index (BMI) of patients who did exercise last more than 6 months [−1.55, 95%CI (−2.32, −0.79)] significantly. The effect on HDL-C was not obvious.Conclusion: Long-term exercise can improve the levels of TG, TC, LDL-C, ALT, and AST in Chinese patients with NAFLD significantly, and exercise last more than 6 months can decrease the BMI of Chinese patients with NAFLD.

Abstract Background At present, the beneficial effect of the ketogenic diet (KD) on weight loss in obese patients is generally recognized. However, a systematic research on the role of KD in the improvement of glycemic and lipid metabolism of patients with diabetes is still found scarce. Methods This meta-study employed the meta-analysis model of random effects or of fixed effects to analyze the average difference before and after KD and the corresponding 95% CI, thereby evaluating the effect of KD on T2DM. Results After KD intervention, in terms of glycemic control, the level of fasting blood glucose decreased by 1.29 mmol/L (95% CI: −1.78 to −0.79) on average, and glycated hemoglobin A1c by 1.07 (95% CI: −1.37 to −0.78). As for lipid metabolism, triglyceride was decreased by 0.72 (95% CI: −1.01 to −0.43) on average, total cholesterol by 0.33 (95% CI: −0.66 to −0.01), and low-density lipoprotein by 0.05 (95% CI: −0.25 to −0.15); yet, high-density lipoprotein increased by 0.14 (95% CI: 0.03−0.25). In addition, patients’ weight decreased by 8.66 (95% CI: −11.40 to −5.92), waist circumference by 9.17 (95% CI: −10.67 to −7.66), and BMI by 3.13 (95% CI: −3.31 to −2.95). Conclusion KD not only has a therapeutic effect on glycemic and lipid control among patients with T2DM but also significantly contributes to their weight loss.

Background/aim: Adropin is a peptide-structure hormone that plays a role in preventing the development of insulin resistance, which has been linked to obesity and metabolic regulation. The purpose of this study is to assess serum adropin levels and their relationship with metabolic parameters in psoriasis vulgaris patients both with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: Fifty-three patients and twenty-six healthy controls were included in this study. Serum adropin levels, fasting blood glucose, fasting plasma insulin, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels of all participants were analyzed. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure serum adropin levels. Results: Serum adropin levels in psoriatic patients without MetS were 2.94±0.56 ng/ml, in psoriasis patients with MetS were 2.49±0.77 ng/ml and were 3.37±0.71 ng/ml in control group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate adropin decreases in psoriasis patients as an independent predictor in terms of the presence of MetS. Conclusion: The serum levels of adropin in psoriasis patients were significantly lower in the presence of MetS, and this decrease was more prominent than in those without MetS. Adropin may be a responsible factor for metabolic disorders and the development of MetS in psoriasis patients. Key words: Psoriasis, metabolic syndrome, adropin
