Estimation of body fat in young women

The body density of 50 healthy young women was determined by underwater weighing, and five skin-fold thicknesses and five girths were measured on each subject. The mean body density was 1.0467 g/ml (sd ± 0.0122), corresponding to 20.06 ± 4.63% by weight of fat in the body by the formula of Keys and Brozcaronek or 22.91 ± 5.58% by the formula of Siri. The mean specific gravity at water temperature 37.5 C was 1.0537 (sd ± 0.0122), corresponding to 22.13 ± 7.08% fat by the formula of Rathbun and Pace. The skin-fold measurement that showed the highest correlation with a composite criterion of skin folds was that over the iliac crest (r = +.92). The best prediction of body density was from skin-fold measurements over the iliac crest and back of arm, which gave a multiple correlation of –.74. Submitted on October 9, 1961

IIntroduction. The comparability and validity of equations used to calculate body density and body fat in boxers is unknown. Material and methods. Twenty-one amateur boxers covering all 10 weight categories had seventeen anthropometric measurements taken. Comparison was made between four different percentage body fats based on different body density equations and five different sum of x values. Results. The results suggest that low and medium-weight boxers are similar in terms of morphological (mesomorph-ectomorph) and anthropometric characteristics, contrasting against the ‘different breed’ of the high-weight group (mesomorph-endomorph). Results from different body density equations differ by as much as 7.6%. The body density equation of Lohman is the most reliable at detecting differences between weight groups. Conclusion. Priority should be given to measuring subscapular, abdominal and thigh skin folds as they have largest variation between weight categories. Using the sum of 6a (triceps, subscapular, bicep, iliac crest, abdominal and thigh) as opposed to the total sum of 8 improves data collection speed, comparability and validity when making comparisons over time and between boxers. The use of a body fat percentage should only be use as a last resort for feedback of results in layman’s terms and its limitations made clear.

In a paper “ On the Expansion by Heat of Water and Mercury” *, a method of determining the expansion of bodies is described, by which good results can be obtained with comparatively small quantities of the substances to be experimented with. This method, that of weighing the body in water at different temperatures, has been employed for the present research. The results obtained are given in the following Tables:— From the above the following conclusion is drawn-namely, that just as it may be said that the specific gravity of an alloy is approximately equal to the mean specific gravities of the component metals , so also from the foregoing we may deduce that the volume which an alloy will occupy at any temperature between 0° and 100° is approximately equal to the mean of the volumes o f the component metals at the same temperature, or, in the other words, the cubical or linear coefficients o f expansion by heat of an alloy between 0° and 100° are approximately equal to the mean of the cubical or linear coefficients of expansion by heat o f the component metals .

To study the relationship between health and nutritional status in elderly populations, information about body composition is essential. To collect this information in large epidemiological studies, practical methods based on anthropometric data must be available. In the present study the relationship between body composition, determined by densitometry, and anthropometric data in 204 elderly men and women, aged 60–87 years, was analysed. Existing prediction equations described in the literature, and mainly based on young and middle-aged subjects, generally underestimated percentage body fat in the elderly study population. Therefore, new prediction equations were developed, based on sex and the sum of two (biceps and triceps) or four (biceps, triceps, suprailiaca and subscapula) skinfolds or the body mass index (BMI). Addition of age or body circumferences to the models did not improve the prediction of body density. Internal cross validation and external validation revealed that the formulas are valid for the estimation of body density in elderly subjects. The standard errors of estimate of the three models, expressed as percentage body fat, were 5.6, 5.4 and 4.8% respectively.

Body composition is a determinant of performance in soccer. To estimate the body fat percentage (%BF), dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is effective though this method is expensive and not readily accessible. This study examines the validity of widely used field methods based on anthropometric data and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Participants were 21 male Spanish First Division soccer players aged between 22 and 35 years. In each participant, body fat mass was determined by BIA and using 18 anthropometric equations including skinfold (SKF) measurements. DXA was used as reference. Correlation with DXA measurements was excellent for all equations and separate SKF measurements yet only moderate for BIA. However, only the equation recently developed for use in soccer players based on iliac crest and triceps SKFs showed no significant or standardized differences with DXA-derived %BF and these measurements also had the lowest bias. Our findings suggest that when DXA is not available, the best field method for %BF assessment in footballers is the equation based on iliac crest and triceps SKF. As another good option, we propose the sum of triceps, subscapular, supraspinal, and abdominal SKFs, as this combination also showed good correlation with DXA.

Background: One of the conditions on premenopausal period is the increase in body fat, among which are caused by levels of the fluctuating estrogen hormone. Increase fat affects the body fat percentage and adipsin levels. Adipsin plays a role in the stimulation of insulin secretion by producing C3a, in which C3AR1 (C3a Receptor 1) fragments interact with beta cells to secrete insulin.Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine correlation of body fat percentage with adipsin levels on premenopause.Design: This was an analytical study with cross-sectional design. Body fat percentage was obtained by examination using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Venous blood was taken at the mediana cubiti area used for serum adipsin levels. Adipsin levels were analyzed by Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) technique.Results: The mean of body fat percentage on premenopausal was 36,18 ± 8,35%. The mean of adipsin levels on premenopausal was 117,05 ± 87,93 ng/ml. Result of Pearson test analysis got value r = 0,632 and value p = 0.0005 (p <0,05).Conclusions: There is a positive significant correlation between the percentage of body fat with adipsin levels on premenopause.

ABSTRACT Background: The study of body composition in patient candidates for bariatric surgery is directly related to the increase and distribution of body fat in the development of cardiovascular disease. Aim: To correlate anthropometric indicators and bioelectrical impedance in the assessment of body fat in female candidates for bariatric surgery. Methods: Cross-sectional, observational study of 88 women. The weight, height, body mass index and waist circumference data were evaluated in the anthropometric analysis. The body fat was determinate by bioelectrical impedance conducted according to the manufacturer´s recommended technique with a specific severe obesity formula. The patients were divided into two subgroups according to the average waist circumference and body mass index for better analysis of the results. Results: The group had a mean age of 39.7 years (±7.2), average weight of 125.6 kg (±16.2), mean body mass index of 48.7 kg/m2 (±6.4) and the mean waist circumference 137.6 cm (±12.4). Negative and significant relationship between BMI values waist circumference and resistance obtained by bioelectrical impedance were found. By analyzing the two groups the mean BMI and waist circumference, a significant relationship was observed, ie, the higher the degree of obesity less resistance was obtained by bioelectrical impedance. The higher is the obesity the lower is value found for resistance. Conclusion: The increase of anthropometric indicators (BMI and waist circumference) determined reduction in resistance and reactance obtained by bioelectrical impedance analysis in obese women candidates to bariatric surgery.

This study aims to investigate the anthropometric feature of young women aged between 18 and 25 from Northeastern China, and compare the difference between the young Northeastern China women and the national adult females. More than 400 young Northeastern China women were measured, and the body data were collected by mix-measurement of 3D scanner and manual method, and the main sizes were extracted to descript the total anthropometric characterizes. The high mean value of the Northeastern young women is 162.3 CM, which is 5.75 CM higher than the national adult females. In the high direction, the other mean values of the samples are variously higher than the national adult females. Overall, the young Northeastern China women are taller than the national adult females and well proportioned. In the width direction, the mean values of bust, waist and neck of the 18-25 years old young women are larger than the national adult females, except the hip.

Knowledge of the species present, their morphology, and their size distribution is required to infer biomass from acoustic surveys of fish. The gas content and specific gravity of the body (with gas removed), ρf, was measured for 71 species of mesopelagic fish in the NE Pacific Ocean. Those species that have functional swimbladders when large maintain constant ρf with increasing body size. Species without functional swimbladders as adults show decreased ρf with increasing body size. The acoustic-backscattering cross-section, σbs, was modelled for all individuals collected from three fish species that differed in the presence of a gas-filled swimbladder. The change in σbs with increasing body size was markedly different between the three. The low body density of those mesopelagic fish without gas-filled swimbladders greatly reduces their σbs. In species of fish that possess a functional swimbladder as juveniles and in which the swimbladder regresses with growth, the σbs first decreases, then increases with increased body size. Knowledge of the ontogenetic changes in swimbladder inflation and body density in mesopelagic fish is critical for the construction of the backscattering models used to interpret acoustic surveys.
