The screening of lesser-known underutilized seeds as source of food has been a way of finding solution to food insecurity in developing nations. In this regard, oil as a class of food was extracted from the seeds ofDiospyros mespiliformis  (4.72±0.2%),Albizia lebbeck  (6.40±0.60%), andCaesalpinia pulcherrima  (7.2±0.30%). The oils were finally analyzed for their fatty acid composition, lipid classes, fatty acid distribution in the lipid fractions, and molecular speciation of the triacylglycerols, glycolipids, and phospholipids. The fatty acid composition of the oils varied with C18:2 fatty acid being the most dominant in the oils. Neutral lipids were the most abundant lipid class found in the oils while molecular species of the triacylglycerol with equivalent carbon chain number C40 was majorly present in the oils ofDiospyros mespiliformisandCaesalpinia pulcherrima. The present study presents lesser-known underutilized seeds as possible sources of food.

Cod flesh lipids were separated by silicic acid chromatography into eight fractions, and the fatty acid distribution in five of these was examined by gas–liquid chromatography (GLC). As compared with the fatty acid composition of total flesh lipids, sterol esters contained less 16:0 but more 20:5ω3; ethanolamine phosphatides contained less 16:0, less 20:5ω3, but more 22:6ω3; serine phosphatides contained less 16:0 and less 20:5ω3 but more 18:0; and choline phosphatides had a fatty acid composition roughly similar to that of total flesh lipid but containing slightly more 16:0 and 20:5ω3 and less 22:6ω3. In fatty acid composition, the triglycerides more closely resembled liver lipid than any of the flesh lipid fractions.

Впервые исследован жирнокислотный состав полярных и нейтральных липидов бурых эндофитных микроводорослей Laminariocolax aecidioides, Streblonema corymbiferum и Streblonema sp. Показано, что в состав полярных липидов входят главным образом полиненасыщенные жирные кислоты, такие как 18:3ω-3, 18:4ω-3 и 20:5ω-3. Во фракциях нейтральных липидов всех образцов доминировали насыщенные жирные кислоты 14:0 и 16:0, мононенасыщенная 18:1ω-9 и полиненасыщенная 18:2ω6. Отмечена высокая концентрация 16:1ω-7 в нейтральной фракции Streblonema sp. Во всех липидных фракциях эндофитов, кроме нейтральных липидов S. corymbiferum, обнаружены гидроксилированные жирные кислоты 22:0Δ2-OH и 24:0Δ2-OH. The fatty acid composition of polar and neutral lipids of brown endophytic microalgae Laminariocolax aecidioides , Streblonema corymbiferum and Streblonema sp. was investigated for the first time. It was shown that the composition of polar lipids of endophytes includes mainly polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as 18:3ω-3, 18:4ω-3 and 20: 5ω-3. Saturated 14:0 and 16:0, monounsaturated 18:1ω-9 and polyunsaturated 18:2ω6 dominated the neutral lipids of all samples. A high concentration of 16:1ω-7 was observed in the neutral fraction of Streblonema sp. Hydroxylated fatty acids 22:0Δ2-OH and 24:0Δ2-OH were found in all lipid fractions, except for neutral lipids of S. corymbiferum .

Abstract Exogenous lipids serving as stimulators to improve lycopene production in Blakeslea trispora have been widely reported. However, the selection basis of exogenous lipids and their effects on intracellular lipids are not very clear. In this study, five plant oils with different fatty acid compositions were selected to investigate their effects on lycopene production, fatty acid composition and the desaturation degree of intracellular lipids. Among the oils, soybean oil, with a fatty acid composition similar to that of mycelium, exhibited the best stimulating effect on lycopene formation (improvement of 82.1%). The plant oils enhanced the total content of intracellular lipids and the desaturation degree of reserve lipids due to the alteration of fatty acid composition, especially in neutral lipids. Lycopene production was increased with the improved desaturation degree of intracellular lipids, which may be attributed to the enhancement of storage capacity for lycopene in storage lipid, thus reducing the feedback regulation of free lycopene. In addition, the increase of the desaturation degree of reserve lipids through temperature-changing fermentation also enhanced lycopene production. The present study could serve as a basis for a better understanding of the relationship between the fatty acid composition of reserve lipids and lycopene production.

Samples of the infaunal invertebrates Nephtys incisa and Yoldia limatula from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, have been analyzed for their fatty acid distribution. Based on total fatty acids, Yoldia contains 9–16% of an acid tentatively identified as 22:2. The ratios of 18:1/18:0 and 18:1/20:1 fatty acids of Nephtys from a polluted station in the bay are lower than the corresponding ratios for animals from relatively clean areas.

The in vitro antithrombotic properties of polar lipid constituents of malted grain (MG), pelleted hops (PH), brewer’s spent grain (BSG), spent hops (SH), wort, and bottled beer from the same production line were assessed in human platelets. The total lipids (TL) were extracted according to the Bligh and Dyer method and further separated into the total neutral lipids (TNL) and total polar lipids (TPL) extracts by counter-current distribution. The TL, TNL, and TPL extracts of all samples were assessed for their ability to inhibit platelet-activating factor (PAF) and thrombin-induced human platelet aggregation. The raw materials, by-products, wort, and beer lipid extracts all exhibited antithrombotic properties against PAF and thrombin. However, the beer TPL exhibited the lowest IC50 values against PAF-induced (7.8 ± 3.9 µg) and thrombin-induced (4.3 ± 3.0 µg) platelet aggregation indicating that these polar lipids were the most antithrombotic. The lipid extracts tended to be more bioactive against the thrombin pathway. The fatty acid content of all the TPL extracts were assessed using GC-MS. The fatty acid composition of the most bioactive TPL extracts, the wort and the beer, shared similar fatty acid profiles. Indeed, it was noted that fermentation seems to play a role in increasing the antithrombotic properties of polar lipids against PAF and thrombin by moderately altering the polar lipid fatty acid composition. Furthermore, the use of brewing by-products as a source of functional cardioprotective lipids warrants further investigation and valorisation.
