In view of the limitations of antifungal agents used in the treatment of oral candidiasis and the wide variety of natural products that have been studied as treatment of this disease, this systematic literature review proposed to evaluate whether scientific evidence attesting to the efficacy of natural products in the treatment of this disease exists. A systematic search in PubMed, MEDLINE, SciELO, Lilacs, and Cochrane Library databases was accomplished using the associations among the keywords Candida albicans, phytotherapy, biological products, denture stomatitis, and oral candidiasis in both English and Portuguese. Four independent observers evaluated the methodological quality of the resulting articles. Three studies were included for detailed analysis and evaluated according to the analysis protocol based on the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) 2010 statement. The tested products were different in all studies. Two studies mentioned random samples, but no study described the sample allocation. No study mentioned sample calculations, a prior pilot study, or examiner calibration, and only one trial reported sample losses. Differences between the tested products and the methodological designs among these studies did not allow the existence of scientific evidence related to the effectiveness of these products for the proposed subjects to be confirmed.

Pediatric palliative care (PPC) is a set of actions aimed at children who suffer from a severe or life-threatening disease to alleviate the symptoms of the disease and improve the quality of life of both the child and his/her family. One of the tools used to control symptoms is physiotherapy; however, its application in the child population has not been thoroughly studied. The main objective of this study was to gather, analyze, and critically evaluate the available scientific evidence on physiotherapy in children who require palliative care through a systematic review of the studies published in the last 10 years in the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, PEDro, CINAHL, and Scopus. Of a total of 622 studies, the inclusion criteria were only met by seven articles, which were focused on the relationship between physiotherapy and PPC. This study analyzed: (1) the main pathologies treated, with a predominance of cerebral palsy and cancer; (2) the interventions applied, such as respiratory physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, therapeutic massage, and virtual reality; (3) the effects achieved in the child and his/her family, highlighting the control of symptoms and the improvement of the quality of life; and (4) the knowledge of the physiotherapists on PPC, observing that most of the professionals had not received training in this scope. The findings of this review indicate a lack of an adequate evidence foundation for physiotherapy in PPC.

Abstract Background Little is known about the quality and potential impacts of the guidelines for COVID-19 management. Methods We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, guideline databases and specialty society Web sites to evaluate the quality of the retrieved guidelines using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II. Results A total of 66 guidelines were identified. Only 24% were categorized as “recommended” for clinical practice. The 211 identified recommendations for COVID-19 management were classified into four topics: respiratory support(27), ARDS management(31), anti-viral or immunomodulatory therapy(95), or other medicines(58). Only 63% and 56% recommendations were supported by, respectively, assessment of the strength of recommendation or level of evidence. There were notable discrepancies between the different guidelines regarding the recommendations on COVID-19 management. Conclusions The quality of the guidelines for COVID-19 management is heterogeneous, and the recommendations are rarely supported by evidence.

Objective: this study aimed to investigate the main therapeutic options for denture stomatitis in patients using complete removable prostheses, to determine the best treatment method, avoiding relapses and improving patients' quality of life. Material and Methods: a search was made in the databases and electronic search tools PubMed, LILACS, SciELO and Web of Science using keywords, in Portuguese and English, such as denture stomatitis, Candida albicans, antifungal, oral candidiasis, and treatment. Results: studies have shown that the main drugs used in the treatment of denture stomatitis are miconazole, fluconazole, itraconazole, nystatin, amphotericin B, ketoconazole, clotrimazole and chlorhexidine. Regardless of the treatment employed, there is an improvement in the disease’s clinical symptoms, but it does not prevent recolonization of the oral mucosa in patients with poor hygiene of the dental prosthesis. Conclusion: it is not possible to determine the best therapy for denture stomatitis, since the studies evaluated showed drug efficacy, but with relapses, especially in patients with poor hygiene of the dental prosthesis.

Objectives. This systematic overview of reviews aimed to summarize evidence and methodological quality from systematic reviews of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).Methods.The PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases were screened from their inception to Sept 2013 to identify systematic reviews and meta-analyses of CAM interventions for FMS. Methodological quality of reviews was rated using the AMSTAR instrument.Results.Altogether 25 systematic reviews were found; they investigated the evidence of CAM in general, exercised-based CAM therapies, manipulative therapies, Mind/Body therapies, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, phytotherapy, and homeopathy. Methodological quality of reviews ranged from lowest to highest possible quality. Consistently positive results were found for tai chi, yoga, meditation and mindfulness-based interventions, hypnosis or guided imagery, electromyogram (EMG) biofeedback, and balneotherapy/hydrotherapy. Inconsistent results concerned qigong, acupuncture, chiropractic interventions, electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback, and nutritional supplements. Inconclusive results were found for homeopathy and phytotherapy. Major methodological flaws included missing details on data extraction process, included or excluded studies, study details, and adaption of conclusions based on quality assessment.Conclusions.Despite a growing body of scientific evidence of CAM therapies for the management of FMS systematic reviews still show methodological flaws limiting definite conclusions about their efficacy and safety.

This systematic review aimed to describe and characterize internal tooth bleaching techniques, conventional (walking-bleach) and combined (inside–outside), referring to their efficacy. The research was conducted on the main databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Only randomized controlled trials and cohort studies were considered, on humans of 18 years old or older. A Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome (PICO) question was designed to evaluate the scientific evidence. The quality of each randomized controlled trial and cohort study was evaluated using the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (ROBINS-I), respectively. The walking-bleach and the combined techniques were both effective at the end of the treatment, obtaining similar aesthetic results. Regardless of the technique used, internal tooth bleaching is an effective procedure, with good aesthetic results, in the treatment of non-vital teeth. The cervical barrier is a standard of care in internal bleaching techniques and should be used. Considering the similarity in the esthetic results obtained in both techniques, the concentrations used for both, and since the biocompatibility of the bleaching agent is more important than its efficiency or speed in obtaining results, the combined technique should be considered the method of choice rather than the walking-bleach technique.

Job satisfaction consists of a feeling of wellbeing, resulting from the interaction of several occupational aspects, and may influence the worker's relationship with the organization, clients and family. Hence, it becomes important for the quality of nursing care to reflect on this topic in depth. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the scientific evidence related to job satisfaction in Brazilian nursing. An integrative literature review was carried out in the databases LILACS, MEDLINE, BDENF and Cochrane Library, totaling 17 publications, categorized in: Job Satisfaction, Job Dissatisfaction and Associated Factors. It was concluded that job satisfaction is determined by a complex network of factors and may vary depending on the group studied. Additional research, particularly of evidence level III in different nursing fields, covering all of Brazil, is necessary to support the implementation of occupational improvements.

Natural products have emerged as an effective and low-cost alternative for treating various diseases of the oral cavity. This study aimed to evaluate, through a systematic literature review, if there is scientific evidence ensuring the safe and effective use of natural product(s)-containing mouthwashes as adjunctive treatment of biofilm-induced gingivitis. Searches were conducted in the databases Medline, SciELO, LILACS and Cochrane Library, by using combinations of the key words gingivitis/natural products/phytotherapy/mouthwash, in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Studies published until September 2010 were considered. Four examiners analyzed independently: study design and phase, methodological quality (Jadad scale - JE), experimental product and its concentration, dosing interval and time of usage, as well as employed statistical analysis and clinical outcome of interest. From the 503 articles found, 08 were included in the final review as phase II, controlled, randomized and blind clinical trials, scoring 4 (25%) and 5 (75%) in JE. The main natural products assessed were: Azadirachta indica, Garcinia mangostana, Lippia sidoides, Salvadora persica and Sesamum indicum whose concentration, dosing interval, time of usage and adverse effects varied according to each study. The Plaque and Gingival Index were most employed, as well as α = 5% and paired t, Student's t, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. A total of 62.5% and 50% of the products significantly reduced supragingival biofilm and gingivitis, respectively. Mouthwashes containing the essential oil from the leaves of L. sidoides (1%) and the extract from the leaves of A. indica (25%) can be indicated as adjunctive treatment of biofilm-induced gingivitis.

Background: during the hospital admission, nurses play a fundamental role in the adherence to hand hygiene (HH) measures by patients and their families, enhancing the quality and safety of care. Objective: synthesize the latest scientific evidence regarding nurse-led interventions focused on hospitalized patients’ adherence to HH and its impact on preventing Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs). Methodology: following the PICOD mnemonic, a narrative review was conducted in MEDLINE (via PubMed), CINAHL (via EBSCO), and Cochrane Library. Two independent reviewers analyzed the relevance of the studies, extracted and synthesized data. Results: seven studies were included for review, published between 2016 and 2018. Three central themes emerged: i) nurse-led interventions that promote patients’ adherence to HH; ii) patients’ HH adherence and HAIs prevention; iii) the importance of person-centered nursing care in this scope. Conclusion: isolated interventions do not lead to adequate behavioural changes. Although educational interventions are the most common actions used by nurses, visual cues, distribution of informational material, provision of HH material, and creation of specific moments for HH are complementary strategies that enhance the efficiency and quality of the intervention.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present systematic review was to determine the existence of scientific evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) as an adjuvant to orthodontic treatment in individuals with orofacial disorders. A further aim was to assess the methodological quality of the studies included in the review. METHODS: An electronic search was performed in eight databases (Medline, BBO, LILACS, Web of Science, EMBASE, BIREME, Cochrane Library and SciELO) for papers published between January 1965 and March 2011, with no language restrictions. Selection of articles and data extraction were performed by two independent researchers. The quality of the selected articles was also assessed. RESULTS: Search strategy resulted in the retrieval of 355 publications, only four of which fulfilled the eligibility criteria and qualified for final analysis. All papers selected had a high risk of bias. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present systematic review demonstrate the scarcity of consistent studies and scientific evidence supporting the use of OMT in combination with orthodontic treatment to achieve better results in the correction of dentofacial disorders in individuals with orofacial abnormalities.
