Nonpolarizable electrodes are applied widely in the electric field measurement for geophysical surveys. However, there are two major problems: (1) systematic errors caused by poor electrical contact in the high resistive terrains and (2) environmental damage associated with using nonpolarizable electrodes. A new alternative structure of capacitive electrode, which is capable of sensing surface potential through weak capacitive coupling, is presented to solve the above problems. A technique is introduced to neutralize distributed capacitance and input capacitance of the detection circuit. With the capacitance neutralization technique, the transmission coefficient of capacitive electrode remains stable when environmental conditions change. The simulation and field test results indicate that the new capacitive electrode has an operating bandwidth range from 0.1 Hz to 1 kHz. The capacitive electrodes have a good prospect of the applications in geophysical prospecting, especially in resistive terrains.

A revised oil leakage evaluation regime is proposed in response to the oil leakage problems of emulsion-based non-curable synthetic polymer rubberized gel (ENC-SPRG) used as a waterproofing material in concrete slabs of residential underground structures. Oil leakage from ENC-SPRG can cause significant economic and environmental damage. As ENC-SPRG waterproofing material is relatively new in the global waterproofing market, a systematic quality control for ENC-SPRG products being manufactured and exported globally is currently non-existent. For the selection of optimal ENC-SPRG, six assessment parameters comprised of averaged and daily average oil leakage mass, averaged and daily average filler content settlement, oil leakage area, and oil leakage duration are proposed. Five ENC-SPRG product specimens are tested to obtain the property values of each parameter. The property values derived from the test results are compared between the tested ENC-SPRG product specimens. With the demonstration of this evaluation regime, a quantified method for a comparative assessment of ENC-SPRG type waterproofing materials is established.

The characterization of the active layer (AL) in mountain permafrost is an important part of monitoring climate change effects in periglagical environments and may help to determine potential slope instability. Permafrost affects 25% of the Northern Hemisphere and 17% of the entire Earth. It has been studied for decades both in the polar regions and – starting a few decades later – in high mountain environments. Typical point information from permafrost boreholes can be extended to wider areas by geophysical prospecting and provide information that cannot be detected by thermal observations alone.

During Summer 2019 we performed several geophysical surveys at permafrost borehole sites in the Swiss Alps. We focused on electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and Frequency Domain Electro-magnetic techniques (FDEM) to compare the methods and test the applicability of FDEM for active layer characterization, i.e., its thickness and lateral continuity. ERT provides an electrical image of the subsoil and can discern active layer thickness, changes in ground ice and geological features of the subsoil. From a logistic point of view a contactless method such as FDEM would be preferable : i) it can provide electrical properties of the subsoil with no need of physical electrical contact with the soil; ii) it can cover a wider area of exploration compared to ERT, iii) it is faster and data collection is simpler than with ERT due to lighter instruments and less preparation time needed.

Based on the FDEM surveys at the Swiss permafrost sites we were able to detect the frozen/unfrozen boundary and to achieve results that were in agreement with those obtained from classical ERT and borehole temperature data. The results were promising for future active layer monitoring with the contactless FDEM method.

Two improved electronic circuits are described for measuring in small time units activity which produces electrical contact with very slight current. Test results obtained with white rats in a stabilimeter cage show valid relationships with observational criteria. Analysis of behavior patterns exhibited supports the concept of general activity when it is properly defined in a given situation.

Abstract The cointegration test in this study aims to see the long-term balance relationship between the amount of rubber and tin production produced in the Province of Bangka Belitung Islands. This time series test uses historical data from 2002-2015. In addition to seeing the cointegration relationship, it will also be seen how the projection results are produced until 2025. This cointegration test results that the amount of rubber and tin production produced in the Province of Bangka Belitung Islands does not have a significant relationship between the two variables as evidenced by a probability value of 0.1366. The probability value that is greater than 5% of the alpha level means that these two variables are independent of each other and the projection results show that tin and rubber production has an upward trend from 2016-2025. The projected value of tin production is not as high as the projection value of rubber plantations with a percentage difference of 11.67%. It is also time for the community to develop the plantation sector and move away from the mining sector which has been undertaken in line with the increasing environmental damage that has been generated.

Recent work has been done to build a Silicon Carbide (SiC) gate driver IC for use with a 1,200V SiC power MOSFET. Protection circuits form an important part of the complete gate driver/power device system. Under-voltage lockout (UVLO) protection disables the gate driver when power supplies are insufficient to turn the power device fully on. Desaturation detection provides protection to the power device by recognizing over-current conditions and disabling the gate driver for a set duration. The protection circuits described in this paper are integrated with a novel SiC gate-driver architecture utilizing discrete 20 V and 40 V power supplies. Two separate UVLO circuits monitor these power supplies while being powered by the 20 V supply. The desaturation detection circuit ensures that the power device is in its safe operating area. The desaturation detection circuit is designed to work with a 20A SiC MOSFET in less than 500ns, while avoiding false triggering on leading-edge spikes. Bench test results of the two UVLOs and desaturation detection circuits were captured and are compared to simulated results.

Portland cement production is an main component in making of “concrete, which contributes significant amount of greenhouse gas, because in the process of production of Portland cement also releases about one ton of carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere. Therefore, the introduction of a novel binder called ‘geopolymer’ by Davidovits promises a good prospect for application in the concrete industry as an alternative binder to Portland cement”. In terms of reducing global warming, the technology based on geo-polymer could reduce the C02 emission to the atmosphere caused by aggregates and cement industries by 80%.Fly ash-based geopolymer concrete “manufactured using fly ash as its source material and does not use Portland cement at all. Not only fly ash, alkaline solution is being utilized to make geopolymer paste which binds the aggregates to form geopolymer concrete. The geopolymer concrete possess excellent mechanical characteristics and better durability characteristics like permeability, resistance against sulphate and acids.” In reinforcement the corrosion is the single most common source of damage and it is usually clear that lack of concrete, inadequate cover to the reinforcement or the available impurities (and sometimes all three) is the prime cause. In the present work, Open Circuit Potential(OCP) method was able to determine the corrosion activity in the reinforced beams. The effect of corrosion on the tensile behavior of reinforcement under different rates of corrosion was compared. The test results reveals that the Geopolymer concrete performs superior to OPC concrete.

The circuit structure and the sampling principle of single battery voltage detecting circuit were introduced. Switching network timing of single voltage sampling was described, and voltage conditioning circuit parameters were calculated. There were some errors in the measurement results. Through the analysis of the main sources of the errors, corresponding correction strategy was given. The test results showed that experimental results after correction were more accurate and stable.
