This paper presents experimental study on rockbursts that occur in deep underground excavations. To begin with, the boundary conditions for excavation in deep underground engineering were analysed and elastic adaptive boundary is an effective way to minimize the boundary effect of geomechanical model test. Then, in order to simulate an elastic adaptive loading boundary, Belleville springs were used to establish this loading boundary. With the aforementioned experimental set-ups and fabrication of similarity models for test, the phenomena of strain mode rockbursts were satisfactorily reproduced in laboratory. The internal stress, strain, and convergences of the openings of the model were instrumented by subtly preembedded sensors and transducers. Test results showed that, with an initial state of high stress from both upper layers’ gravitational effects and in situ stress due to tectonic movements, the excavation brings a dramatic rise in the hoop stress and sharp drop in radial stress, which leads to the splitting failure of rock mass. Finally a rockburst occurred associated with the release of strain energy stored in highly stressed rock mass. In addition, the failure of the surrounding rock demonstrated an obvious hysteresis effect which supplies valuable guide and reference for tunnel support. Not only do these results provide a basis for further comprehensive experiments, but also the data can offer assisting aids for further theoretical study of rockbursts.

The permeability of deep rock is closely related to the stability and safety of underground engineering. The rocks in deep stratum are mostly with high stress and high osmotic pressure. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the coupling effect between porewater pressure and in situ stress on rock mass. A series of triaxial cyclic loading and unloading experiments under hydraulic-mechanics coupling conditions are carried out to studied the mechanical and hydraulic properties of granite in the depth of 1300 m to 1500 m. Especially, the effect of the disturbance on the permeability of fractured rocks are investigated by unloaded the confining pressure. Tests results presented that the stress-strain curves of deep granite showed typical brittle characteristics. The principal stress of granite exhibited a linear relationship under the high confining pressure of 34-40 MPa and high osmotic pressure of 13-15 MPa. Dissipated energy of the rock decreased to a relatively low level after 2-3 loading cycles and then slowly increased. Permeability showed a decreasing trend as the loading and unloading cycles increase. Finally, acoustic emission technology was used to monitor the fracture evolution in rocks, the acoustic emission signal released as the fractures develop and energy dissipated. The results would provide basic data for the exploitation and excavation in the deep galleries.

To accommodate traffic volume on roads due to ever-increasing population growth, the widening of highways and motorways is in high demand. Nevertheless, the widening of tunnels on these road networks is quite complex due to the presence of numerous rock types, in situ stress, and different widening modes. To overcome these complexities, eight different tunnel shapes were simulated under varying support conditions for asymmetric and symmetric widening. It was found that the tunnels with a round shape, such as horseshoe and semicircular with flatbed, are more effective for asymmetric widening, whereas the provision of a rounded invert in these shapes can reverse the widening option to symmetric. Furthermore, an insignificant effect of the difference in asymmetric and symmetric widening of regular tunnel shapes, such as box, rectangular, and semi-elliptical, was found. A full factorial design statistical analysis confirmed the decrease in tunnel deformation by using various tunnel support systems and showed a significant deformation difference according to monitoring locations at the tunnel periphery. The deformation difference in the case of both tunnel widening modes was also analyzed according to different design parameters. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of rock mass behavior when the widening of any underground opening is carried out.

The rock mass failure induced by high in-situ stresses during the excavation of deep diversion tunnels is one of the key problems in the construction of the Jinping II Hydropower Station. Based on the results of acoustic wave tests and rockburst statistical analysis conducted, this study focuses on the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) and rockburst events in the Jinping II diversion tunnels excavated using the tunnel boring machine (TBM) method and the drilling-blasting method. The unloading failure mechanism and the rockburst induced by the two different excavation methods were compared and analyzed. The results indicate that, due to the different stress adjustment processes, the degree of damage to the surrounding rock mass excavated using the drilling-blasting method was more serious than that using the TBM method. The EDZ induced by the TBM was usually distributed evenly along the edge of the excavation surface. While, the drilling-blasting method was more likely to cause stress concentration, resulting in a deeper EDZ in local areas. However, the TBM excavation method can cause other problems in high in-situ stress areas, such as strong rockbursts. The drilling-blasting method is more prone to structural controlled failure of the surrounding rock mass, while the TBM method would induce high stress concentration near the edge of excavation and more widely distributed of stress adjustment induced failure. As a result, the scale and frequency of the rockburst events generated by the TBM were significantly greater than those caused by the drilling-blasting method during the excavation of Jinping II diversion tunnels. The TBM method should be used carefully for tunnel excavation in high in-situ stress areas with burial depths of greater than 2000 m. If it is necessary to use the TBM method after a comprehensive selection, it is suggested that equipment adaptability improvement, advanced prediction, and prediction technology be used.

Surrounding rocks of deep underground engineering are generally cracked, between which and support exists combined effect that can be reflected by the mechanical characteristics of cracked rock mass under lateral Constraints. In this paper, the strength and deformation characteristics of the cracked rock mass under lateral Constraints are investigated with methods of physical and numerical experiments. The results show that the rock mass behaves as equivalent continuum and tends to stable after deforming and re-fracturing, and has stress hardening behavior. These characteristics are obviously different from that of shearing slippage of rock samples at the residual stage of triaxial experiment.

A novel in situ stress monitoring method, based on rheological stress recovery (RSR) theory, was proposed to monitor the stress of rock mass in deep underground engineering. The RSR theory indicates that the tiny hole in the rock can close gradually after it was drilled due to the rheology characteristic, during which process the stress that existed in the rock can be monitored in real-time. Then, a three-dimensional stress monitoring sensor, based on the vibrating wire technique, was developed for in field measurement. Furthermore, the in-field monitoring procedures for the proposed technique are introduced, including hole drilling, sensor installation, grouting, and data acquisition. Finally, two in situ tests were carried out on deep roadways at the Pingdingshan (PDS) No. 1 and No. 11 coal mines to verify the feasibility and reliability of the proposed technique. The relationship between the recovery stress and the time for the six sensor faces are discussed and the final stable values are calculated. The in situ stress components of rock masses under geodetic coordinates were calculated via the coordinate transformation equation and the results are consistent with the in situ stress data by different methods, which verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Surrounding rock mass stability is one of the key technical problems in the design of the diversion tunnels in Jinping II Hydropower Plant Project. The major difficulties lie in three facts: (1) high stress induced by the great depth; (2) the brittle failure characters of marble; (3) the interaction of these four tunnels. A systemic procedure is introduced in this paper. Firstly, the integration of the code FLAC3D and the multivariate linear regression method is adopted to back analyze the in situ stress field. Then the mechanical parameters of the surrounding rock mass are back analyzed based on the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm and the code FLAC3D. The stress release method is adopted in the numerical analysis of the excavating and supporting process of tunnels by the code FLAC3D. Finally, the multi indexes integration method is presented to analyze and evaluate the stability of the tunnels and to validate the rationality of the design scheme.

In the last few decades, in both mining and civil engineering projects, deeper excavations have been carried out than in the past. With this increase in depth, rocks may overstress and rock failures can occur during excavation. When competent rock strata are encountered under high stress conditions, these failures can vary from superficial spalling to explosive rockburst. Intense rockbursts may cause fatal injuries to workers and significant loss of equipment and time. The occurrence of rockbursts is always difficult to predict and special steps and measures must be taken to control them. First, burst-prone zones must be predicted by an early exhaustive geological study and by the assessment of in situ stress level and orientation. Second, basic design parameters, e.g., shape, size, and excavation method, should be modified and adapted to the expected conditions to minimize rockburst risk. Third, in situ pre-conditioning methods, e.g., destress blasting, can be applied to decrease the capacity of the rock mass to store energy. Finally, special rock support and reinforcement systems, i.e., yielding systems, must be installed after excavation to ensure total stability of the opening. This paper reviews the geological and geomechanical factors that provoke and influence rockbursts in overstressed rock masses and the engineering measures taken to control them.

Empirical systems for the classification of rock mass are used primarily for preliminary support design in tunneling. When applying the existing acceptable international systems for tunnel preliminary supports in high-stress environments, the tunneling quality index (Q) and the rock mass index (RMi) systems that are preferred over geomechanical classification due to the stress characterization parameters that are incorporated into the two systems. However, these two systems are not appropriate when applied in a location where the rock is jointed and experiencing high stresses. This paper empirically extends the application of the two systems to tunnel support design in excavations in such locations. Here, the rock mass characterizations and installed support data of six tunnel projects are used. The back-calculation approach is used to determine the Q value using the Q-system support chart, and these values are then used to develop the equations and charts to characterize the stress reduction factor (SRF), which is also numerically evaluated. These equations and charts reveal that the SRF is a function of relative block size, strength–stress ratio, and intact rock compressive strength. Furthermore, the RMi-suggested supports were heavier than the actual installed ones. If the approximate inverse relation between stress level (SL) and SRF is used, the difference between the actual and the recommended supports increases when using the RMi-recommended rock support chart for blocky ground. An alternate system is made for support recommendation using a Q-system support chart. In this system, the ground condition factor is modified from the available parameters, and a correlation is developed with a modified Q system.

Red shale is widely distributed among the deep mine areas of Kaiyang Phosphate Mine, which is the biggest underground phosphate mine of China. Because of the effect of various factors, such as high stress, ground water and so on, trackless transport roadways in deep mine areas were difficult to effectively support for a long time by using traditional supporting design methods. To deal with this problem, some innovative works were carried out in this paper. First, mineral composition and microstructure, anisotropic, hydraulic mechanical properties and other mechanical parameters of red shale were tested in a laboratory to reveal its deformation and failure characteristics from the aspect of lithology. Then, some numerical simulation about the failure process of the roadways in layered red shale strata was implemented to investigate the change regulation of stress and strain in the surrounding rock, according to the real rock mechanical parameters and in-situ stress data. Therefore, based on the composite failure law and existing support problems of red shale roadways, some effective methods and techniques were adopted, especially a kind of new wave-type bolt that was used to relieve rock expansion and plastic energy to prevent concentration of stress and excess deformation. The field experiment shows the superiorities in new techniques have been verified and successfully applied to safeguard roadway stability.
