Warning indicators are required for the real-time monitoring of the service conditions of dams to ensure safe and normal operations. Warnings are traditionally targeted at some “single point deformation” by deformation measuring points of concrete dam, and scientific warning theory on “overall deformation” measured is nonexistent. Furthermore, the influences of random factors are not considered. In this paper, the overall deformation of the dam was seen as a deformation system of single interactional observation points with different contribution degrees. The spatial deformation entropy, which describes the overall deformation, was established and the fuzziness indicator that measures the influence of complex random factors on monitoring values according to cloud theory was constructed. On this basis, multistage warning indicators of “spatial deformation” that consider fuzziness and randomness were determined. Analysis showed that the change law of information entropy of the dam’ overall deformation is identical to the real change law of the dam; thus, it reflects the real deformation state of the dam. Moreover, the identified warning indicators improved the warning ability of concrete dams.

Some of the teachings of the Lord Jesus are in the form of a straightforward sentence and some are figurative. The use of the word "leaven" in the few sentences that the Lord Jesus says about vigilance is in the figurative sense. That is why it is necessary to find the word meaning according to the principles of exegesis. The exegetical method used involves establishing the text of the text to be extrapolated, ie Matthew 16: 6, analysis of sentence structure and composing of translations, analysis of the context of the use of yeast at the time, excavation of theological points based on the meaning of words and wording in sentences, and the application of exegesis to the contemporary context. The conclusion of this study is, Jesus uses the term yeast because yeast is something commonly used in society, so its symbolic meaning is easily drawn according to what is understood by society. Yeast depicts the doctrine, and there is a common characteristic of yeast and the characteristics of doctrine; the decay caused by a small amount of yeast does not appear to be the process but the real change, as well as quite a bit of unhealthy teaching that is allowed to contaminate, has the potential to ruin the entire character of a person. The doctrine to watch out for is the preoccupation with the more outward than the spiritual, including arrogance, hypocrisy, and worldly worldview.

We discuss resonances for a nonrelativistic and spinless quantum particle confined to a two- or three-dimensional Riemannian manifold to which a finite number of semiinfinite leads is attached. Resolvent and scattering resonances are shown to coincide in this situation. Next we consider the resonances together with embedded eigenvalues and ask about the high-energy asymptotics of such a family. For the case when all the halflines are attached at a single point we prove that all resonances are in the momentum plane confined to a strip parallel to the real axis, in contrast to the analogous asymptotics in some metric quantum graphs; we illustrate this on several simple examples. On the other hand, the resonance behaviour can be influenced by a magnetic field. We provide an example of such a ‘hedgehog’ manifold at which a suitable Aharonov-Bohm flux leads to absence of any true resonance, i.e. that corresponding to a pole outside the real axis.

Getting engaged now requires more emotional and financial resources than ever before. Here Essig traces the history of engagements from the birth of companionate marriages in the nineteenth century to the invention of rituals like the bended knee and fetish items like the diamond ring in the early twentieth century. But the real change happened at the beginning of the twenty-first century, as engagements became “spectacular,” requiring not just highly staged events but also highly produced videos and images that could then be disseminated to the larger world.

Volcanic history of Santorini over recent years records a seismo-volcanic unrest in 2011–12 with a non-eruptive behavior. The volcano deformation state following the unrest was investigated through multi-sensor Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) time series. We focused on the analysis of Copernicus Sentinel-1, Radarsat-2 and TerraSAR-X Multi-temporal SAR Interferometric (MT-InSAR) results, for the post-unrest period 2012–17. Data from multiple Sentinel-1 tracks and acquisition geometries were used to constrain the E-W and vertical components of the deformation field along with their evolution in time. The interpretation of the InSAR observations and modelling provided insights on the post-unrest deformation pattern of the volcano, allowing the further re-evaluation of the unrest event. The increase of subsidence rates on Nea Kameni, in accordance with the observed change of the spatial deformation pattern, compared to the pre-unrest period, suggests the superimposition of various deformation sources. Best-fitting inversion results indicate two deflation sources located at southwestern Nea Kameni at 1 km depth, and in the northern intra-caldera area at 2 km depth. A northern sill-like source interprets the post-unrest deflation attributed to the passive degassing of the magma intruded at 4 km during the unrest, while an isotropic source at Nea Kameni simulates a prevailing subsidence occurring since the pre-unrest period (1992–2010).

Common to all the cases included in this special issue, we observed a degree of collaborative decision-making that is human-centered and shows empathy. Through it, multiple voices are acknowledged and heard. These cases demonstrate the beginning of a process of contextualization of Design Thinking in K–12 and teacher education. We hope that this special issue will prompt conversations to explore and critique the possibilities and imagine the real change that it might bring.

A very amusing picture of an East India voyage in the early 'sixties is left us in one of a small collection of log books recently presented to the Society. By the time of the Civil War the importance of sailing craft was already on the wane, but it was not until after the war that the real change from sails to steam power began, and in 1862 a fleet of vessels still made profit of New England handicaps by carrying ice to the tropical ports.

AbstractThe power cables passing through penetration leads to growth of the thermal ageing mechanisms rate. The paper presents the results of the laboratory tests when the real environmental service conditions for penetration are simulated comparison with the result of the thermal computation of the power cables heating and of the temperature influence evaluation of temperature increase of the power cable components on the cable lifetime. For this particular case, a power cable with PVC insulation, we estimated a lifetime decrease about 20 years referring to lifetime (30÷40 years) for location in air.

This chapter discusses the Scientific Revolution that is dated from the publication of Nicolaus Copernicus's On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres in 1543, the work that put the sun rather than the earth at the center of the universe to Isaac Newton's Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy in 1687, the work that gave the causal underpinnings of the whole system as developed over the previous one hundred and fifty years. Historian Rupert Hall put his finger precisely on the real change that occurred in the revolution. It was not so much the physical theories, although these were massive and important. It was rather a change of metaphors or models—from that of an organism to that of a machine. By the sixteenth century, machines were becoming ever more common and ever more sophisticated. It was natural therefore for people to start thinking of the world—the universe—as a machine, especially since some of the most elaborate of the new machines were astronomical clocks that had the planets and the sun and moon moving through the heavens, not by human force but by predestined contraptions. In a word, by clockwork!

Abstract 3D laser scanning technology overcomes the limitation of single point measurement in traditional measurement methods, which can convert the 3D information of objects and site environmental into data processed by computers. The 3D laser scanning technology is usually called restoration of real scenes technology, which has been widely used in automobile, architecture, terrain exploration, petro and other industries. During the construction stage of nuclear power project, the 3D laser scanning technology can be used to get the real environment information on site. Through comparative analysis of the real environment information and the design model environment, risks can be easily identified in advance and mitigation measures can be performed in time, thus effectively avoiding the rework and saving the cost of the project.

This essay examines California Republican Senator Thomas Kuchel in honor of his 101 birthday this August, tracing Kuchel's fight against the conservative Right during the 1960s. More specifically, the essay highlights Kuchel as the last vestige of California's progressive Republicans and his effort to protect the GOP from right-wing corrosion and the likes of Nixon, Goldwater, George Murphy, and especially Ronald Reagan. Ultimately it was this effort that united the corporate conservatives of Reaganism to oust the 32 year political veteran in 1968. Based on periodicals and primary research conducted in the political papers of Thomas Kuchel, Barry Goldwater, and Alan Cranston, the essay posits that remembering Kuchel will push us to reflect on the real change of the Republican Party under Reaganism, both nationally and in California. With no biographies written and his own centennial overshadowed by the political pageantry of Reagan's, remembering Thomas Kuchel offers an important and much needed political perspective.
