A 1-year-old sexually intact female Labrador Retriever was evaluated for malodorous vaginal discharge, lethargy, and vomiting. A diagnosis of pyometra was suspected based on signalment, clinical signs, and abdominal ultrasonography. The dog underwent an exploratory celiotomy revealing a palpably enlarged cervix and edematous, fluid-filled vagina with an otherwise normal uterus. The ovaries, uterus, cervix, and cranial vagina were surgically resected. Histopathology revealed mild to moderate regionally extensive subacute neutrophilic cervicovaginitis due to an unknown underlying etiology. The dog did not exhibit any postoperative complications or recurrence of clinical signs in 6 months. This case represents an unusual disease condition, which presented in a manner typical for pyometra, yet required more extensive surgical resection.

Abstract Background Naso-ethmoidal meningoencephalocele is usually a congenital anomaly consisting of a protrusion of cerebral tissue and meninges into the ethmoidal labyrinth. The condition is a rare cause of structural epilepsy in dogs. We report the clinical presentation, surgical intervention, postoperative complications and outcome in a dog with drug resistant epilepsy secondary to a meningoencephalocele. Case presentation A 3.3-year-old male neutered Tamaskan Dog was referred for assessment of epileptic seizures secondary to a previously diagnosed left-sided naso-ethmoidal meningoencephalocele. The dog was drug resistant to medical management with phenobarbital, potassium bromide and levetiracetam. Surgical intervention was performed by a transfrontal craniotomy with resection of the meningoencephalocele and closure of the dural defect. Twenty-four hours after surgery the dog demonstrated progressive cervical hyperaesthesia caused by tension pneumocephalus and pneumorrhachis. Replacement of the fascial graft resulted in immediate resolution of the dog’s neurological signs. Within 5 months after surgery the dog progressively developed sneezing and haemorrhagic nasal discharge, caused by sinonasal aspergillosis. Systemic medical management with oral itraconazole (7 mg/kg orally q12h) was well-tolerated and resulted in resolution of the clinical signs. The itraconazole was tapered with no relapsing upper airway signs. The dog’s frequency of epileptic seizures was not affected by surgical resection of the meningoencephalocele. No treatment adjustments of the anti-epileptic medication have been necessary during the follow-up period of 15 months. Conclusions Surgical resection of the meningoencephalocele did not affect the seizure frequency of the dog. Further research on prognostic factors associated with surgical treatment of meningoencephaloceles in dogs is necessary. Careful monitoring for postsurgical complications allows prompt initiation of appropriate treatment.

<strong>Introduction:</strong> Pulmonary aspergiloma or mycetoma is a saprophytic colonization of a preexisting cavity by aspergilloma. Surgical resection is the only effective long-term treatment, but remains controversial because of the high rate of complications in the perioperative and postoperative time.<br /><strong>Objectives:</strong> Analysis of the experience of a Cardiothoracic Surgery Center for the treatment of pulmonary aspergilloma and evaluation of the prognostic factors after surgery.<br /><strong>Material and Methods:</strong> Retrospective analysis including all the patients with a diagnosis of pulmonary aspergilloma submitted to surgery for a 10 years period, in a single institution (June 2001-June 2011).<br /><strong>Results:</strong> The study included 22 patients (18 men) with a mean age of 51.0 + 17.4 years. Of them, 46% were smokers, 41% were alcoholic and 50% had a previous history of tuberculosis. Most of the patients had a complex aspergilloma (73%) and 17% a simple aspergilloma. The most common presentation was hemoptysis (50%). The common surgical procedure performed was atypical lung resection in 55%, lobectomy in 27% and pneumectomy in 9%. Two patients were submitted to thoracoplasty. There was one operative death (5%). Postoperative complications occurred in 36% and the most frequent were pneumothorax (18%) and empyema (18%). The mean follow-up period was 52 months (3 - 116) and the 5 years mortality rate of 35%. Of them, 4 patients died because of non- related causes and 3 were immunosuppressed patients. The mortality was 40% in the group of complex aspergilloma and 33% in the group of complex aspergilloma.<br /><strong>Discussion:</strong> The most common surgical procedure performed was atypical lung resection. The postoperative complications rate was similar to previous studies.<br /><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Surgical resection of aspergilloma presents a low morbidity and mortality. Therefore, for patients with lung function preserved, it is the preferred treatment.<br /><strong>Keywords:</strong> Aspergillus; Pulmonary Aspergillosis/surgery.

283 patients with gliomas were included in this study. Age, sex, neurological status and Karnovsky performance were analyzed before and after surgery, also tumor location, type and volume of surgical resection, postoperative complications were considered. Volume of tumor resection did not depend on glioma localization, excluding deep located tumors, in which case stereotactic cryotomy was performed (p < 0,01). In cases of stereotactic cryotomy postoperative neurological deficit worsening was noted in 12,5%, in patients with open biopsy and partial resection — 10,9%, and in case of total or subtotal tumor resection in 7,0% (p > 0,05). Partial gliom resection often related with postoperative complications and neurological deficit worsening then open surgery total tumour resection. Stereotactic cryotomy does not lead to bigger postoperative complications frequency in comparisons with open surgery.

Intestinal lymphoma is the second most common form of lymphoma in dogs. It is characterized by the presence of neoplastic lymphocytes in the gastrointestinal tract or mesenteric lymph nodes. The chief clinical signs are vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and weight loss. The diagnosis is made through fine needle aspiration and cytology, or by tissue biopsy and histopathology, and chemotherapy is the treatment of choice. We report a case of intestinal lymphoma in a five years old Boxer, presented with history of hematochezia and lethargy of 7 days duration, and 20 days of anorexia and persistent weight loss. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed free fluid in the abdominal cavity, and an intestinal mass. Exploratory laparotomy was performed and a tissue biopsy was performed. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of intestinal lymphoma, but the patient died during the surgical procedure.

An 8-year-old, castrated male, Jack Russell Terrier was presented with clinical signs of uveitis and glaucoma in the right eye (oculus dexter (OD)) for 2–3 months. Ophthalmic examination revealed OD episcleral congestion, corneal vascularization, aqueous flare, iris bombe, and vision loss. OD glaucoma and uveitis were under control by medical treatment. After 8 months, the dog had acute uveitis in the left eye (oculus sinister (OS)). General physical examination, blood examinations, radiography, and urinalysis were unremarkable. No improvement was observed after for 1 month of uveitis treatment, and more examinations were strongly suggested. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed several hypoechoic masses or cysts on both kidneys. Computed tomography (CT) showed diffuse nonenhancing hypodense patches in both kidneys. Renal tumor was highly suspected, but biopsy was declined by the owner. Ten days after CT examination, the dog suddenly developed anorexia, weakness, uremia, hyperkalemia, and polycythemia. The dog was euthanatized because of the worsening clinical condition, poor prognosis, and financial constraints, and both kidneys were biopsied for histopathology. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive for B-cell marker (CD20) and negative for T-cell marker (CD3). Bilateral renal B-cell origin lymphoma was diagnosed by histologic and immunophenotyping examinations. In conclusion, bilateral renal lymphoma may be diagnosed with no systemic signs except bilateral uveitis. Renal function impairment was acutely developed with severe clinical signs at the end stage of the disease. Early, aggressive, complete examinations, and treatments are strongly recommended.

Kidney is a major organ for homeostasis of the body's extracellular fluids by maintaining a constant internal environment. By playing such crucial responsibility kidney remains vulnerable for various diseases and disease condition. Other than laboratory findings, application of ultrasonography can be considered as one of the finest diagnostic tool to determine the architectural detail of kidney. To compare the study, we have taken two groups of canine, namely healthy and clinical. The later grouped was screened based on clinical signs, Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and Serum Creatinine value. Sonography was performed by using Brightness mode instrument for both the groups. The values were analyzed by Prolate Ellipsoid formula to estimate the volume of kidney. There was significant variation in sizes between the kidneys of both the groups. Moreover, the size of the kidneys of few clinical cases, which has been suffering from renal disorder since long, reveals smaller size kidney than the healthy groups. Thus, this noninvasive method is quite practicable to evaluate the size of kidney amongst various renal failure cases. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/ralf.v1i1.22373 Res. Agric., Livest. This report describes the clinical, parasitological and pathological findings in a 6-year-old intact female European cat with thoracic and peritoneal tetrathyridiosis, characterized by genital involvement. Physical examination and X-ray evaluation revealed laboured breathing and several pulmonary nodules suggestive of cancer. However, necropsy demonstrated a parasitic aetiology of the disease. Histologically, multifocal granulomas were detected in the lungs, uterus and ovary. Parasitological examination permitted identification of the intestinal parasites as Mesocestoides lineatus, which was later confirmed by molecular examination. The larval forms in the peritoneal and chest cavity were identified as the second stage of the Mesocestoides sp. cestode named Tetrathyridia spp. The chronic injuries observed and the rapid course of the disease from the onset of the symptoms until death suggested a long period without clinical signs and indicate that overt disease can potentially be triggered by a failure of the immune system. The observed oophoritis and metritis identify tetrathyridiosis as a possible differential diagnosis in genital dysfunction.
