Responses of Laughing Gull Chicks (Larus Atricilla) To Parental Attraction- and Alarm-Calls, and Effects of Prenatal Auditory Experience On the Responsiveness To Such Calls

AbstractConfirming previous observations in the gull-colony the parental attraction-call 'crooning' selectively enhanced activity while the alarm-calls 'kow' and 'uk-uk' suppressed activity and vocalizations, even in the absence of additional visual clues. These calls may have had the observed effects in part because of certain acoustic characteristics to which chicks preferentially respond and in part because of specific experiences that chicks may have had with these calls prior to testing. Some of the difference between experiment (a) and (b) in the performance towards 'uk-uk' calls may have been due to the fact that the chicks in (b) were tested later in the season than the chicks in (a). Later hatching chicks may have been physically less well developed and thus less responsive than earlier hatched chicks, or they may have had differential kinds or amounts of auditory experience before they were tested. The present results differ from findings of an earlier pilot-investigation (BEER, 1973) in which recordings of single adult birds evoked no clearcut responses in chicks. However most of those chicks had been several days old and in other experiments it was shown that responsiveness to calls of adults changes with age (BEER, 1970b).Observations. Adult Laughing Gulls utter several distinct calls during the incubation of their eggs and the raising of their chicks. One call referred to as 'uhr' call is frequently heard during incubation in conjunction with rising from the eggs or resettling, and in response to the mate's activities near the nest. 'Crooning' is heard during mate-reliefs in incubation. After hatching this call functions to attract the young to the parent. `Uk-uk' and 'kow' alarm-calls are both uttered when the colony is disturbed by a potential predator, but 'kow' calls can also be heard in purely conspecific disturbances. Experiment I . The responses of day-old chicks, reared by their parents, were investigated towards recordings of some of these calls. Confirming observations in the wild, `crooning' selectively enhanced activity and elicited approach; 'uk-uk' suppressed activity and vocalization and elicited crouching; 'kow' calls had similar effects but to a lesser extent. Experiment 2. Chicks collected at hatching from nests in the gull-colony were compared with chicks hatched in an incubator in order to discover whether the prenatal conditions affected early postnatal responsiveness to 'crooning'. It was found that parent-hatched chicks showed increased activity in the presence of 'crooning' and some of them approached the speaker, whilst incubator-hatched chicks were not activated by these calls. Experiment 3. Younger chicks were compared with older chicks (all hatched in the incubator) for the purpose of finding out to what extent their responsiveness to 'crooning' would change with postnatal age. The results showed that to parentally inexperienced chicks this call increasingly acquires the effects of alarm-calls in that it suppresses vocalization and activity and elicits crouching. Experiment 4. The role of parental calls as experienced in the wild during incubation was examined experimentally. During the last 2 1/2 to 3 days of incubation eggs were repeatedly exposed to different types of calls (or no calls at all), in order to see to what extent and with what degree of selectivity such exposures would affect responsiveness to 'crooning' and 'kow' calls in newly hatched chicks. It was found that prenatal exposure to 'crooning' leads to enhancement of activity and vocalization in the presence of such calls postnatally. Effects of prenatal experience with disyllabic 'uhr' call point into the same direction. Prenatal experience with 'kow' calls does not lead to early postnatal activation in response to 'crooning'. Responsiveness to 'kow' calls was only affected by prenatal exposure to these calls. Discussion. Some previously published studies in this field of research are briefly reviewed and compared with the present findings. The relative contribution of prior experience of parental and filial vocalizations to later responsiveness to parental calls is discussed. Earlier research in the Laughing Gull had shown that parentally inexperienced embryos are selectively activated by 'crooning' till close to hatching. In the present study it was shown that repeated prenatal experience with 'crooning' leads to its attractiveness after hatching. Therefore repeated prenatal (and maybe early postnatal) exposure to this call and related calls seems to function to maintain and. consolidate responsiveness to this call in the neonate. In contrast to 'crooning', 'kow' alarm-calls heard prenatally do not enhance nor suppress motility. Prior exposure to this call does not maintain this apparent indifference, but merely reduces the extent to which it acquires activiy suppressing effects.

Communication is a central component of animal behaviour, yet communicative behaviours are poorly studied due to their complexity and varied functions. Pumas (Puma concolor) are wide-ranging, solitary felids that primarily use indirect cues (e.g., scent marking) for communication. Because these cryptic carnivores are rarely observed directly, little is known about their vocalizations in the wild. We recorded a variety of Puma vocalizations among females and family groups using motion-triggered video cameras and then attempted to understand the function of each vocalization. We found two categories of vocalizations: 1) attention-attracting (caterwauling and mewing), and 2) calls (contact, agitated, and alarm). Vocalizations to attract attention ranged across broad frequencies. Contact, agitated, and alarm calls are narrow-frequency vocalizations that varied in intensity and were used to communicate with nearby conspecifics. Vocal communication entails risk, and while some Puma vocalizations may provide benefits that outweigh their risk, others are structured to limit detection and risk. These observations highlight the importance of the structure of vocalizations used during different behaviours to understand their adaptive significance.

Abstract The rates of clearance and catabolism of human protein C inhibitor (PCI) and human alpha 1-antitrypsin (alpha 1-AT) and their complexes with human activated protein C (APC) were studied in the rabbit. The radioiodinated-free inhibitors had biologic half-lives of 23.4 and 62.1 hours, respectively, while the corresponding *I-labeled activated- protein C complexes were cleared with half-lives of 19.6 +/- 3.1 and 72.2 +/- 6.1 minutes. Complex clearances were linked to their catabolism as shown by a correlation between clearance and the appearance of free radioiodine in the plasma. Thus, the difference in the rates of catabolism would result in a fivefold greater amount of alpha 1-AT-APC complex than PCI-APC complex 1 hour after the formation of equal amounts of these in vivo. These results lead to the conclusion that the relative contribution of PCI and alpha 1-AT to the physiologic inhibition of APC cannot be determined only from the rates of the formation of these complexes in vitro, or from measurement of their levels in plasma. The APC-PCI complex is unstable as compared with the APC-alpha 1-AT complex, compounding the problem of estimating rates of complex formation from their levels in plasma.

‘Evolution Canyon’ on Mount Carmel, Israel, displays highly contrasting physical and biotic environments on a micro-geographic scale, and is a natural laboratory for investigating genetic responses to variable and extreme environments across species. Samples of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans were collected from three sites each on the north- and south-facing slopes of the canyon along altitudinal transects, and one site on the valley floor. Numbers of abdominal and sternopleural sensory bristles were recorded for each of these subpopulations in three thermal environments. In D. simulans, sternopleural bristle number exhibited micro-geographic differentiation between the north- and south-facing slopes, while abdominal bristle number was stable across subpopulations. In D. melanogaster, the magnitudes of the difference in mean sternopleural bristle number between the north- and south-facing slopes and of mean abdominal bristle number along the altitudinal gradients were both conditional on rearing temperature. Thus, the pattern of genetic variation between sites was consistent with underlying heterogeneity of genetic mechanisms for response to the same environmental gradients between traits and sibling species. In contrast, the genetic architecture of bristle number at the level of variation within populations was very similar between species for the same bristle trait, although the two traits differed in the relative contribution of genotype by temperature and genotype by sex interaction.

When individuals of a variety of species encounter a potential predator, some, but not all, emit alarm calls. To explain the proximate basis of this variation, we compared faecal glucocorticoid metabolite concentrations in live-trapped yellow-bellied marmots ( Marmota flaviventris ) between occasions when they did and did not emit alarm calls. We found that marmots had significantly higher glucocorticoid levels when they called than when they did not call, suggesting that stress or arousal may play an important role in potentiating alarm calls. Marmots are sensitive to variation in the reliability of callers. The present finding provides one possible mechanism underlying caller variation: physiological arousal influences the propensity to emit alarm calls.

1. The paper described an attempt to see whether differences in co-adaptation between populations of Drosophila subobscura are related to the distance between them. The mean and the variance of body-size, development time and survival were recorded on parent populations and the F1 and F2 of various crosses to test for heterosis in the F1 and decline in performance or greater variance in the F2, which might indicate the break-up of co-adapted gene arrays. Comparisons were carried out at different temperatures and on a variety of larval diets, especially sub-optimal ones in which the larvae were grown on synthetic media. A large number of wild flies were caught at sites separated by about 10 miles along a transect of southern Scotland; these comprised one series of comparisons. For more distant crosses flies were caught at sites in southern England, Denmark, Switzerland and Israel.2. There were well-defined differences in body-size, and, to a lesser degree, development time between populations from more widely separated localities and these showed evidence of a cline, northern populations having larger body-size. The difference in size between the Scottish and Isreal populations is about 20%.3. There was no evidence of differences in co-adaptation between populations even in crosses between populations from sites as far apart as Scotland and Israel. The F1's were always close to the mid-parent values and there was no evidence of breakdown in the F2 nor of increased variability.4. There was hardly any evidence of gene-environment interaction either with respect to different diets or to different temperatures.5. Records of body-size on flies caught in the wild showed that they are extremely variable, indicating great variation in larval nutrition. Under natural condition stability of growth in body-size is conspicuously lacking in this species.6. An additional test of co-adaptation was based on the between-family variance of abdominal bristle number of intra- and inter-population matings in the two most widely separated populations. There was no evidence of greater variance in the inter-population series.7. To test for possible differences in breeding structure, the response to inbreeding was determined for two widely separated populations of D. subobscura and a long-established cage population of D. melanogaster, on an unrestricted larval diet and also on several different kinds of sub-optimal diets. There was little or no sign of consistent differences between the species in their response to inbreeding.8. This test revealed differences between the two species in their minimum requirements for particular nutrients. subobscura is less able than melanogaster to withstand lower levels of protein and survival is particularly reduced. On the other hand, melanogaster has a considerably higher requirement for choline. Where there are apparent differences between the species in the average effect of inbreeding, the inbreeding effect is greater on the relatively more sub-optimal diet.9. Comparison of the performance of the immediate descendants of wild flies with those derived from the same site, but kept in the laboratory for some twenty generations, failed to show any differences on several different diets and so there was no evidence that adaptation to laboratory conditions was important.10. The lack of evidence for co-adaptation apparently conflicts with what has been claimed for other species. Such differences are discussed.

The aim of the present study was to assess the contribution of angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) and neutral endopeptidase (NEP) in the coronary degradation of bradykinin (BK) after left-ventricular hypertrophy following myocardial infarction (MI) in rats. Myocardial infarction was induced by left descendant coronary artery ligation, and the contribution of ACE and NEP in the degradation of exogenous BK after a single passage through the coronary bed was assessed at 2, 5, and 36 days post-MI. BK degradation rate (Vmax/Km) was found to be significantly lower in hearts at 36 days (3.30 ± 0.28 min–1) compared with 2 days (4.39 ± 0.32 min–1) for noninfarcted hearts, but this reduction was just above the statistical level of significance for post-MI hearts. In infarcted hearts, Vmax/Km was increased significantly 5 days post-MI (4.91 ± 0.28 min–1) compared with the 2 and 36 day-groups (3.43 ± 0.20 and 2.78 ± 0.16 min–1, respectively). The difference between noninfarcted and MI was significant only 2 days post-MI. Treatment with the vasopeptidase inhibitor, omapatrilat, showed that the relative contribution of ACE and NEP combined increased over time in infarcted hearts and became significantly higher 36 versus 2 days post-MI. Finally, the treatment with an ACE inhibitor (enalaprilat) and a NEP inhibitor (retrothiorphan) in the 36-day infarcted and noninfarcted hearts showed that the relative contribution of ACE in infarcted hearts was comparable with that of noninfarcted hearts, whereas the relative contribution of NEP was increased significantly in infarcted hearts. In conclusion, experimental MI in rats induces complex changes in the metabolism of exogenous BK. The changes resulted in an increased relative contribution of NEP 36 days after infarction.Key words: bradykinin, ACE, NEP, myocardial infarction.

This study is to assess the influences of climate, socio-economic determinants, and spatial distance on the confirmed cases and deaths in the raise phase of COVID-19 in China. The positive confirmed cases and deaths of COVID-19 over the population size of 100,000 over every 5 consecutive days (the CCOPSPTT and DOPSPTT for short, respectively) covered from 25th January to 29th February, 2020 in five city types (i.e., small-, medium-, large-, very large- and super large-sized cities), along with the data of climate, socio-economic determinants, spatial distance of the target city to Wuhan city (DW, for short), and spatial distance between the target city and their local province capital city (DLPC, for short) were collected from the official websites of China. Then the above-mentioned influencing factors on CCOPSPTT and DOPSPTT were analyzed separately in Hubei and other provinces. The results showed that CCOPSPTT and DOPSPTT were significantly different among five city types outside Hubei province (p < 0.05), but not obviously different in Hubei province (p > 0.05). The CCOPSPTT had significant correlation with socio-economic determinants (GDP and population), DW, climate and time after the outbreak of COVID-19 outside Hubei province (p < 0.05), while was only significantly related with GDP in Hubei province (p < 0.05). The DOPSPTT showed significant correlation with socio-economic determinants, DW, time and CCOPSPTT outside Hubei province (p < 0.05), while was significantly correlated with GDP and CCOPSPTT in Hubei province (p < 0.05). Compared with other factors, socio-economic determinants have the largest relative contribution to variance of CCOPSPTT in all studied cities (> 78%). The difference of DOPSPTT among cities was mainly affected by CCOPSPTT. Our results showed that influences of city types on the confirmed cases and death differed between Hubei and other provinces. Socio-economic determinants, especially GDP, have higher impact on the change of COVID-19 transmission compared with other factors.

Translocation programmes implying the movement of animals from one place to another aim to sustain endangered populations in the wild. However, their success varies greatly, with predation being a major contributing factor. This is particularly prevalent in released captive-raised individuals which have a reduced or lost awareness of predators. Alarm calls are an immediate response made toward a predator, mostly studied in highly predated, social vertebrates. These warning vocalizations are a vital part of a prey species' anti-predator behavior, enhancing the individuals' and surrounding listeners' survival. To date, most translocation programmes have not considered this behavior for release success. Here we review the literature summarizing alarm communication systems of wild and captive vertebrates, aiming to establish recommendations and actions which could encourage alarm communication behavior in captive vertebrate species. Observations of wild animals show that alarm-call understanding is gained through the experience of predation pressure from a young age, amongst conspecific and heterospecific social groups, which captive individuals can lack. This information, combined with consideration of a programme's accessible resources and captive individual's developmental history, is pivotal to efficiently guide appropriate actions. Focusing on preserving behaviors in captivity, we provide a list of recommendations and actions to guide the reinforcement of alarm communication throughout the translocation process. Ensuring predator awareness and the maintenance of alarm communication in translocated individuals may greatly improve the likelihood of release success.
