The present article deals with the dialect of Kojda, a village situated on the White Sea coast in the Mezen' rajon of the Archangel'sk oblast'. The dialects of the Archangel'sk oblast' are poorly described, because most of the area is not included in the Dialect Atlas of the Russian Language (DARJa).The dialects spoken to the north of the Northern Dvina developed from the Old Novgorod dialect of the first Russian settlers, who came in the Middle Ages. Kojda was founded at a later stage, in the 17th century, presumably by people from neighbouring settlements. A large proportion of the present population, however, are descendants of Old Believers from Novgorod. The main part of the article consists of an enumeration of the main dialectical features of Kojda. These features were found on a tape recording of an 88-year old inhabitant of the village. These dialectal char-acteristics were compared with data from several publications dealing with dialects from the Archangel'sk oblast', in particular with dialects from the Pinega rajon, which is situated near Kojda. Most features are typical of the Archangel'sk dialects. An exception is the comparatively open pronunciation of the Old Russian jat'. Some data suggest that there are more features which are not typical of all dialects of the Archangel'sk oblast', but further research is needed. My findings suggest that the dialect of Kojda is more similar to the Pinega dialects than might be expected from the literature, though it seems to be less archaic.

The article is devoted to the history of the creation of the V.F. Miller’s work «Die Sprache der Osseten» («The Ossetian Language»). Published excerpts from the letters V.F. Miller to G.V. Baev on this issue in the period from 1901 to 1906 were extracted from the collections of the Scientific Archive of the North Ossetian Institute for Humanitarian and Social Studies. The selection of materials from the letters allows us to trace the work process of Miller on the manuscript of the book at a specified time, and assess creative participation of Bayev in it. For the history of scientific Ossetian studies, information about the beginning and process of a scientist’s work on the manuscript of the book, its goals and objectives, structure, new sections, preparation periods for printing, positive responses of foreign scientists to the book, which Miller shared with Baev. It is also important to bear in mind the help provided to the scientist at his request by Baev by supplying the latest official statistics on the total number of the Ossetians both in the Terek region and beyond it, which Miller subsequently placed in the Introduction to the book, in the section «Territory of distribution of the Ossetian language and its dialects». Noteworthy are the recommendations of Miller on the need to publish in Ossetia a practical grammar of the Ossetian language, in the creation of which he offered his assistance. The Russian-language version of the book published in 1962 by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR is considered. Published materials allow us to count the letters of Miller to Baev, one of the most important sources on the history of the creation by the scholar of the book «Die Sprache der Osseten» («Ossetian Language»).

The issue of developing linguocultural competence among future Russian language teachers is relevant in the context of multicultural educational space, considering that this competence is the most important and professionally significant personal quality. The development of linguocultural competence ensures student’s readiness to implement the ideas of the culturological approach in the process of education, his/her readiness to teach the Russian language in the context of Russian culture and the dialogue of cultures. The purpose of the study is to illuminate the methodological experience in the application of modern methods and technologies in the system of higher education. The aim of such methods and technologies is to help the future Russian language teacher develop linguocultural competence during the course of studying the culture-oriented methodological subject Intercultural Communication in the Russian Language Lessons, which is included in the educational bachelor’s degree program 44.03.05 Pedagogical Education (with two specializations) at the North-Eastern Federal University n.a. Ammosov. To achieve this goal, the following tasks are performed: study of the theoretical foundations of culture-oriented linguistic methodology; analysis of the concepts, methods, and technology of developing linguocultural competence in the course of studying languages; definition of the methods and technologies of developing linguocultural competence of future Russian language teachers applied in the course of Intercultural Communication in the Russian Language Lessons. These tasks are performed through a set of theoretical and empirical methods, including: analysis of scientific and methodical literature, study and analysis of educational standards and programs, lesson observation, analysis and evaluation of the products of students’ learning activities; description of pedagogical experience. The study was conducted under the guidance of the Department of Russian Language and Literature Teaching Methodology at the Philology Faculty of the North-Eastern Federal University n.a. Ammosov. The introduction of the course of Intercultural Communication in the Russian Language Lessons shows that the development of linguocultural competence among students is facilitated by the application of the principle of science and the connection of theory and practice, the principle of intersubject communications and the integrative approach, the principle of competency and the activity approach, and correlations between learning and research activities. Effective methods of developing the linguocultural competence among future Russian language teachers are: problem lectures (binary and interactive); imitative learning technologies; project technologies (individual and group projects); and research methods.

The study investigates the rule of spelling the root -ravn-/-rovn- and is considered to be a fragment of the academic description of Russian spelling, which is currently being under investigation at the Russian Language Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The authors clarify the meanings that determine the spelling of the unstressed root, supplement the lists of exceptions, denote words with meanings not corresponding to the given values-criteria, and, for the first time in linguistics, investigate the words that can be correlated with different values-criteria, that is, they have double motivation. The rule codifies the spelling of words that have double motivation and fluctuate in usus, dictionaries, study guides and reference books. Spelling recommendations for these words correspond to the current linguistic norm and were approved by the Spelling Commission of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2019. The linguistic commentary to the rule contains the most significant etymological facts concerning the root -ravn-/-rovn- and summarises the scientific and methodological attempts to figure out the distribution of vocabulary with root -ravn-/-rovn- based on the meanings selected in the spelling rules. In the paper it is shown that the instability in spelling of various verbs with the root -ravn-/-rovn- in modern writing and dictionaries is determined by the double motivation of words, as well as contradictory recommendations and gaps in the rules.

This article describes the process of the English term “public relations” entering the Russian language and culture; there is the term (and its Russian synonyms) frequency statistics in Russian texts as well. Analysis of spelling usage of the English term (in official documents, professional sphere, and informal contexts) has been done. The article also provides a forecast that in some time the term пиар (in Russian spelling) will become neutral, and will possibly remain the only one name for that sphere of activity.

The article is devoted to the repertoire of the Vepsian taleteller Filipp Semenovich Smirnov (1863 - 1938), whose texts were recorded in 1935 - 1936 mainly in Russian and later made up a separate archival collection of the Russian-language folklore fund of the Scientific Archives of the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Most of the tales were included in the collection "Vepsian tales", published in 1941 in Petrozavodsk and compiled by G. E. Vlasyev. F. S. Smirnov, being a literate person, replenished his repertoire with various literary works: many of the texts recorded from him go back to the tales of A. S. Pushkin, P. P. Ershov, Kh. K. Andersen, cheap popular (luboc) fairy tales, translated knightly novels and stories of the 18th century.

The aim of the article is to introduce the authors’ perspective on how English loanwords are changing the structure and the content of the verbal code of Russian culture and the Russian linguistic pictures of the world, as well as on how the latter might change the former. Having used the continuous sampling method, observation method, and synchronic-diachronic approach (lexical semantic analysis, comparative semantic analysis, morphological and quantitative analysis), the authors have allocated and analyzed 487 loanwords, which led to the introduction of three distinguished types of interaction between the verbal code of the Russian language and foreign loanwords. The first interaction type is the process whereby the loanwords adapt semantically to the rules of the host language and culture, which leads to the complete change of a loanword meaning or its modification (15 words). The second interaction type is connected with the loanwords bringing new concepts to a host language and indicating borrowed ideas and objects (270 words). The differentiation of these two interaction types is based on the results of a synchronic and diachronic study of the loanwords in Russian. The analyzed interaction types are linked to the changes in the host language’s verbal code. A concept of a “hybrid linguistic picture of the world” is being introduced as the one constituting the third interaction type (201 words). According to the authors, the hybrid linguistic picture of the world is developing at the current stage of the Russian language and is caused by the process of the morphological adaptation of English loanwords, which is manifested in the production of hybrid words and Russian words being actively substituted by English borrowings.
