The novel and the myth of the epic: Balestrini, Lukács, and the cathartic experience

In this article, I address the critical reception of Nanni Balestrini's narrative work, focusing in particular on the novel Vogliamo tutto (1971). I compare the interpretative model, which sees this text as overcoming the novelistic form and moving toward the epic, with a similar model in György Lukács' foundational text The Theory of the Novel (1916), which sets up an opposition between the novel, understood as an expression of the irrelevance of private existence in our society, and the idea of a “rebirth” of the epic as a redemptive collective dimension. In order to investigate the textual mechanisms that generate a reading experience that has been defined resorting to the cliché of the epic, I draw on Lukács' later Aesthetics (1962). In this work, he offers a response to the impasses of his earlier thought by using the concept of catharsis, which explains the effects of a work of art on the reader/viewer through the pathetic energy generated by the dissolution of the subjective perspective. Through a close reading of key passages from Vogliamo tutto, I show how the rhetorical structure of the text is grounded in a repeated dissolution of the narrative point of view (the narrator's voice) in the collective voice of the workers. I argue that the “pathetic intensity” produced by this loss of subjectivity inscribes the communal existence of the political struggles of the time in the immediacy of the reading experience.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mendekripsikan tanggapan pembaca terhadap novel Le Petit Prince (2) mendeskripsikan horizon harapan pembaca terhadap novel Le Petit Prince, dan (3) mendeskripsikan faktor-faktor penyebab perbedaan tanggapan dan horizon harapan pembaca. Penelitian ini termasuk jenis penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian berupa teks yang memuat tanggapan pembaca novel Le Petit Princeyang terdiri dari 20 orang, sedangkan sumber datanya berupa artikel dan makalah yang dimuat di media massa cetak dan elektronik termasuk internet. Instrumen penelitian berupa seperangkat konsep tentang pembaca, tanggapan pembaca, dan horizon harapan. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan cara observasi dan data dianalisis dengan menggunakan teknik deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian yang didapat sebagai berikut. (1) Seluruh pembaca menanggapi atau menilai positif unsur tema, alur, tokoh, latar, sudut pandang, gaya bahasa, teknik penceritaan, bahasa, dan isi novel Le Petit Prince. (2) Harapan sebagian besar pembaca sebelum membaca novel Le Petit Prince sesuai dengan kenyataan ke sembilan unsur di dalam novel Le Petit Prince, sehingga pembaca dapat dengan mudah menerima dan memberikan pujian pada novel Le Petit Prince. The research data consist of a set of paragraphs that contains readers' responses to Le Petit Prince's novel, while the data sources are articles and papers published in print and electronic mass media including the internet. The research instruments are a set of reader concepts, reader responses, and expectations horizon. The technique of collecting data is observation and data are analyzed by using qualitative descriptive technique. The results obtained are as follow: (1) All readers respond and valuethe theme elements,plots, characters, background, point of view, language, titles, storytelling techniques, language, and extrinsic novel Le Petit Prince positively. (2) The expectations of most readers before reading Le Petit Prince's novels are in accordance with the nine facts in Le Petit Prince's novel, so readers can easily accept and give prise to Le Petit Prince's novel. (3) Factors causing differences in responses and horizon of readers' expectations other than the stressing differences of the elements being addressed also due to the differences in knowledge of literature, knowledge of life and literary reading experience. Abstract Recent surges and advances in the popular use of electronic technology such as Internet, email, iPad, iPhone, and touch-screens in Africa have opened up great communicative possibilities among ordinary people whose voices were previously marginalized in traditional elitist media. People far apart geographically and living in different times can communicate rapidly and with great ease. This technological revolution has challenged and broken down boundaries of dependence on television, newspapers, and novels, the traditional forms of communication. It is now possible to upload a novel onto an iPad and read it as one moves from place to place. The burden of carrying hard copies is relieved but not eradicated; in most African countries, including Zimbabwe (the centre of focus in the present article), the creative work of art or hard copy of a novel is still relied upon as source of information. There are creative, experimental innovations in the novel form in Zimbabwe which to some extent can justify one’s speaking of a hypertextual novel. This new type of novel incorporates multiple narratives, and sometimes deliberately uses genres such as the email form as a constitutive narrative style that confirms as well as destabilizes previous assumptions of single coherent stories told from one point of view. Using the concepts of hypertextuality, intertextuality, and Bakhtin’s notions of carnivalesque and heteroglossia in speech and written utterances, this article reconsiders the implications of the presence of ideologies of hypertextuality in one novel from Zimbabwe, Nyaradzo Mtizira’s The Chimurenga Protocol (2008). The article argues that the multiplicity of narratives constitutes the hypertextual dimension of the novelistic form.

In this paper, we propose that there is a politics of encounters centered on the body at play in seeking asylum and refuge, and that it is critical to study how it unfolds from the point of view of both governing and agency. Building on existing work that looks at the role of embodiment in the political struggles of refugees, and leaning on Helmuth Plessner’s original thinking about social embodiment, we develop a theoretical understanding of this political dynamic, illustrating how it can help us make sense of power relations and forms of governance and (latent) resistance involved in it.

A experiência histórica portuguesa pós-1974 propiciou a difusão de romances de notável arrojo ético-estético. As naus (1988), de António Lobo Antunes, é prosa que remete à tradição literária enformadora da cultura lusa, em que Os Lusíadas, de Camões, e a Mensagem, de Pessoa, são pilares para o estabelecimento de um grande diálogo mito-poético. Aliando mito e poesia, como propõe o teórico Northrop Frye, à noção de saudade, como traço português inerente (conforme Eduardo Lourenço e Teixeira de Pascoaes), este artigo propõe um estudo comparado do romance de Lobo Antunes especialmente à Mensagem (1934): um encadeamento que impele a revisitação ao icônico épico de Camões. Recorrendo-se, ainda, aos conceitos de romance histórico, de György Lukács, e de dialogismo, de Mikhail Bakhtin, o trabalho amplifica discussões suscitadas pelo romance em causa: a tensão entre a história hegemônica e a vida comum, a tradição literária e os impasses político-sociais do século XX.********************************************************************Lixbon revisited or the returned empire: the mythopoetic of Mensagem (and a miss of lusiads) in As Naus by Lobo AntunesThe Portuguese experience after 1974 propitiated a diffusion of notable boldness ethic-aesthetic novels. As Naus (1998), written by Lobo Antunes, is a prose that remit to the literary tradition of the Portuguese cultural form, in which Lusíadas, by Camões, and Mensagem, by Pessoa, are the pillars to the establishment of a major myth-poetic dialogue. Combining myth and poetry, as proposes the theorist Frye, the notion of saudade [yearning], as an inerent Portuguese feature (according to Lourenço and Pascoaes), we propose a comparated study in the romance of Antunes, especially to the Mensagem (1934): a chaining that drives the revisitation to the iconic Epic of Camões. AbstractRousseau's interpreters often disagree over whether the Emile prepares its protagonist for membership in the Social Contract’s political community or presents him as an alternative to it. I argue that such attempts to determine the compatibility of Rousseau's different “projects” obscures his broader engagement with his contemporary popular audiences—particularly those associated with the theater and the novel—and the political implications therein. In contrast to the above debate, I turn to Emile to argue that in this work Rousseau attempts to shape readers in distinct and crucial ways. Emile does not simply present precepts to be embraced but intervenes into the underlying communicative dynamics that need to obtain for Rousseau's conception of collective self-legislation. It does so by shifting between the theatrical and novelistic generic conventions identified in his prior engagements with popular audiences, thus generating a reading experience that orients readers to continuously revisit their constitution as a collective audience.

This paper presents the woman as a person who fights against concealment and mistreatment of the male-controlled society. The novel Difficult Daughters reasonably shows the situation of ladies and her aching battle to build up an identity. Manju Kapur has come out as a genuine social scholar in her novels in light of the fact that there is a reason behind her composition. Her novels has been composed with a distinct reason in the light of the fact that the author attempts to dissect issues identified with the working class or upper white-collar class women. Manju Kapur is greatly intrigued to present the inquiries and issues identified with women’s from larger point of view. In her novels, the questions have developed basically with regards to the identity of the educated working-class women. Manju Kapur's female protagonists are generally well-read. They are resilient people yet detained inside the limit of moderate society. Their instruction drives them to free speculation for which their family and society become unbearable to them, in their individual fight with family and society through which they dove into a committed exertion to look a personality for them as the qualified woman with flawless foundation. The author has depicted her protagonist as woman trapped in the contention between the interests of the fragile living creature and longing to be a piece of the political and scholarly society of today.

This article explores teaching international politics, international political economy (IPE) and urbanism through a reading of China Miéville’s novel, Perdido Street Station. The novel as an artefact of popular culture affords a critical encounter with the production of space for students of international politics and IPE. Departing from prevailing approaches to understanding the urban in relation to the international that tend to focus on networks and circulation, the article offers a reading of the novel as demonstrating the production of space. The article links a critique of the hierarchical relations between teacher and student to critiques of the subordination of labour to design and planning, both of which render invisible the work of producing knowledge and space. Through an analysis of the political struggles over the formal and real subsumption of labour in Perdido Street Station, the article argues that studying the politics of urbanism in relation to the international through artefacts of popular culture can disrupt the invisibility of work.

The article examines peculiarities of the translation analysis of the literary text, in particular the pre-translation stage and translation itself on the example of the political and satirical novel “Oleniada” by I. Rozdobudko. Each researcher has their own point of view on the structure and stages of the translation process. The translation of any text is a long process, which consists of different stages depending on the purpose of the final product. Obtaining a quality adequate translation in the target language requires the translator to take a number of steps to study the author’s work, his or her individual features, genre, if it’s necessary to be an expert on the issues described in the original text – history, medicine, culture, geography, criminology, etc. The vast majority of scholars in the field of translation studies do not distinguish between pre-translation and translation analyzes of text, considering them to be inseparable from each other. Pre-translation analysis of a literary text has its own laws, according to which the dominant features of the work are studied (anthropocentrism, aesthetic information, fiction, imagery, etc.). We define the relevance and prospects of further research on this topic in the comparison of pre-translation analyzes of literary texts by different authors and different genres.

This article results from the analysis of the novel Eredegalda’s sad story from the book While sleep does not come, by José Mauro Brant. In 2017, this book was forbidden in the Brazilian public schools for focusing on incest. The controversy gave rise to moral, aesthetic and pedagogical debates. The study is a literary analysis, it was carried out based on the aesthetics of György Lukács and aimed to overcome the duality of moralism-artistic freedom within this debate, pointing out an earlier need: to reflect on the possible pedagogical role of “Eredegalda’s sad story”. This concrete situation made it possible to move forward in examining the educational character of works of art and the use of literature as a pedagogical instrument. It presents the general situation, then explains the fundamentals on which the investigation was based and, finally, reveals the author’s point of view on the work in question.
