Effects of Experience on Tempo Preference for Selected Wind Band Masterworks

We conducted two studies to complement extant tempo preference work. In Study 1, we explored preferred tempos for excerpts from selected wind band masterworks of band directors and undergraduate instrumental music majors. Participants used a sort-and-rank procedure to indicate tempo preferences of six excerpts. Preferences for four of the pieces were substantially the same: There was no difference between original tempos and the 6% increase in tempo. These results comport with research showing increased preference for faster tempos. For the other two excerpts, listeners preferred original and decreased tempos. These results parallel earlier research showing that pieces heard as already fast were preferred with slightly slower tempi. However, in one example, music majors preferred the faster tempi, demonstrating that when examples are unfamiliar, faster tempi are preferred. In Study 2, collegiate and secondary school band directors tapped preferred tempi of four works used in Study 1. Results agree with extant literature: Regression to moderate tempi was demonstrated by participants. Conductors tapped slow examples faster and fast examples slower relative to expert baselines. Tapping performance preferences were consistent with the listening preference task. Awareness of these inclinations may inform musical decisions made by students and band directors when rehearsing and conducting.

In schools, band is often seen as a class where students and teachers can be creative. But is this true? Many schools use a traditional band model, which may not allow space for creative activities. This article, inspired by the Music Educators Journal March 2017 special focus on teaching for musical creativity, examines and critiques the traditional model of school band with respect to the space offered for creative music experiences and offers ideas for band directors of how to structure their programs to help foster more creative musical activities.

We investigated the effects of expressive and unexpressive conducting on secondary school band members’ and experts’ audio evaluations of band performance expressivity. A conductor, who demonstrated either expressive or unexpressive conducting techniques, led both an eighth-grade and a high school band in four separate “run-throughs” of a one-minute excerpt from David Holsinger’s A Childhood Hymn. Each excerpt was conducted both expressively and unexpressively at two separate rehearsals, resulting in four performances for each band. Participants ( N = 165) involved with the audio evaluation task included the band members as well as experts (i.e., public school band directors). Results indicated significant main effects for evaluator group (eighth grade, high school, or experts) and ensemble level (eighth grade or high school). No significant main effect was found for conductor expressivity, but a significant three-way interaction between conductor expressivity, evaluator group, and ensemble level was found, with experts assigning lower ensemble expressivity scores than the band members. To determine whether the performers in this study would notice any differences between the conducting conditions, we replicated a survey from Price and Winter to gauge their opinions about the conductor. Our results indicated that eighth-grade and high school students preferred being conducted expressively rather than unexpressively.

The purpose of this study was to examine inservice high school band directors’ perceptions and applications of democratic rehearsal procedures in concert band rehearsals. Respondents ( N = 216) were members of the National Association for Music Education who were currently teaching concert band at the high school level. Respondents indicated that “identify and describe opportunities for individual and ensemble performance improvement” and “student-led sectionals” were considered the most important democratic rehearsal procedures for their students to experience. These same procedures were also the most frequently used democratic rehearsal procedures. Analysis of open-ended responses revealed that respondents believed student ownership, student engagement, and student growth as musicians and leaders were advantages to implementing democratic rehearsal procedures. Potential disadvantages included issues related to student ability, rehearsal time limitations, unfamiliar classroom dynamics, and availability of classroom resources. Implications for music teachers are discussed.

Joseph Proudman was born on 30 December 1888 at Thurston Fold Farm, Unsworth, near Bury in Lancashire. His father was then a farm bailiff; from 1898 to his death in 1943 he was a small tenant farmer at Bold, near Widnes in Lancashire. Joseph Proudman attended primary school at Unsworth from 1894 to 1898, and at Bold from 1898 to 1902. From 1902 to 1907 he was a pupil-teacher at Farnworth primary school between Bold and Widnes. He tells us that in 1902 his salary was £6 10s. Od. per year, and in 1907 it was £24 per year. His secondary education was begun by the headmaster, A. R. Smith, who gave him a lesson each morning from 8 to 8.45 before the school opened at 9. During the winters of 1902-4 he attended evening classes at the Widnes Technical School, studying art, mathematics and physiography. From 1903 to 1907 he only taught for half of each week; the other half he attended classes at the Widnes Secondary School. This was an excellent school, and it was here that the mathematical bent of his life was determined. From that time onwards his chief recreation became reading, especially the reading of history. One result of this interest was the writing of the unusually full autobiographical papers, of which the present writers have made much use.

In previous research, there exists some debate about the effects of musical training on memory for verbal material. The current research examines this relationship, while also considering musical training effects on memory for musical excerpts. Twenty individuals with musical training were tested and their results were compared to 20 age-matched individuals with no musical experience. Musically trained individuals demonstrated a higher level of memory for classical musical excerpts, with no significant differences for popular musical excerpts or for words. These findings are in support of previous research showing that while music and words overlap in terms of their processing in the brain, there is not necessarily a facilitative effect between training in one domain and performance in the other.

SYNOPSISA questionnaire concerned with dependency, mainly in the mother–child relationship, and intended for use in child psychiatry, is described. It was administered to the mothers of 116 randomly selected junior and secondary school children in the general population, stratified into age, sex, social class, and school groupings. Two meaningful dimensions were revealed by principal component factor analyses: one concerned with reliance on mother and the other reflecting sociability. Reliability and validity were found to be satisfactory.

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of mindfulness practices on high school band students. This action research project took place in spring 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic stay-at-home orders. Four students enrolled in the high school band participated in five weeks of mindfulness practice interventions over the virtual format alongside their instrumental music director. Mindfulness practices included diaphragmatic breathing, relaxation imagery, cued relaxation, and stretching. Throughout the five weeks, student participants discussed improved focus, improvement of stress management, and increased frequency of mindfulness practice. However, four months after data collection was complete, three of the four student participants continued to practice mindfulness techniques on their own time to assist with nervousness, anxiety, and stress.

Music-related injuries among musicians, including younger musicians, have been well documented; however, minimal research has been completed with college-aged instrumentalists. The purpose of this research study was to describe the presence of physical symptoms in college-age musicians and the impact of these symptoms on music-playing and other daily occupations. Data collection was completed on college instrumental music majors using two survey questionnaires, which documented the presence of physical symptoms in the upper limb and the impact of these symptoms on function. The results indicate that a significant number of students reported pain or discomfort that occurred during music-playing, at rest, and during other daily occupations. Results were consistent with the literature in regards to the prevalence of symptoms in female instrumentalists as compared to males and the occurrence of more symptoms in those individuals playing string instruments and piano as compared to other instrument groups. Also, as self-reported pain increased, a greater level of dysfunction in occupational performance was found. Results also indicated that when participants were already implementing intervention strategies, this was perhaps a predictor of the presence of pain and dysfunction. Health professionals should be encouraged to provide preventive education for student musicians and to use outcome measures, such as the Disabilities of the Hand, Arm, and Shoulder (DASH) outcome measure, to identify the potential for functional impairments.

The aim of the study was to clear-out the effect of the round house strategy on the achievement of physical concepts at the ninth grade. The study consisted of (48) students at the Jufa Secondary School for girls for the second semester 2018/2019, distributed randomly to two divisions in the same school, one of which was experimental and the other experimental. This study found that there was a statistically significant difference in the post-test in the students' acquisition of physical concepts at (α = 0.05) between the average performance of the experimental group studied using the circular house strategy and obtained an average of (19.70), and the control group studied in the usual way and obtained Average (14.63), in favor of the experimental group. In light of these results, the researcher recommended using the circular house strategy because of its importance in gaining physical concepts among students. In light of these results, the researcher recommended using the round house strategy and its role in acquiring physical concepts in demand

Students’ conceptions of the equals sign are related to algebraic success. Research has identified two common conceptions held by children: operational and relational. The latter has been widely operationalised in terms of the sameness of the values on each side of the equals sign, but it has been recently argued that the substitution component of relational equivalence should also be operationalised (Jones, Inglis, Gilmore, & Dowens, 2012, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jecp.2012.05.003). In this study, we investigated whether students’ endorsement of the substitution definition of the equals sign is a unique predictor of their algebra performance independent of the other two definitions (operational and sameness). Secondary school students were asked to rate the ‘cleverness’ of operational, sameness, and substitution definitions of the equals sign and completed an algebra test. Our findings demonstrate that endorsement of substitution plays a unique role in explaining secondary school students’ algebra performance above and beyond school year and the other definitions. These findings contribute new insights into how students’ algebra learning relates to their conceptions of the equals sign.
