The social network, socioeconomic background, and school type of adolescent smokers

The aim of this study is to examine the role of Dutch second grade (age 13–14) high school peer networks in mediating socioeconomic background and school type effects on smoking behavior. This study is based on a longitudinal design with two measurement waves at five different high schools, of the complete networks of second grader friendships, as well as their smoking behavior, school type, and parents’ educational level. The analysis is done by simulation investigation for empirical network analysis (SIENA) modeling that can control for friendship selection on the basis of smoking similarity when assessing friends’ influence on smoking. The findings show that, when controlling for friendship selection, the influence of friends still plays a significant role in adolescent smoking behavior, and suggests that socioeconomic background and school type effects on smoking are mediated by the friendship networks at school.

Over recent decades, computer simulations have become a common tool among practitioners of the social sciences. They have been utilized to study such diverse phenomena as the integration and segregation of different racial groups, the emergence and evolution of friendship networks, the spread of gossip, fluctuations of housing prices in an area, the transmission of social norms, and many more. Philosophers of science and others interested in the methodological status of these studies have identified a number of distinctive virtues of the use of computer simulations. For instance, it has been generally appreciated that as simulations require the formulation of an explicit algorithm, they foster precision and clarity about whatever conceptual issues are involved in the study. The value of computer simulations as a heuristic tool for developing hypotheses, models, and theories has also been recognized, as has been the fact that they can serve as a substitute for real experiments. This is especially useful in the social domain, given that human beings cannot be freely manipulated at the discretion of the experimenter (for both points, see Hartmann 1996). However, the main virtue of computer simulations is generally believed to be that they are able to deal with the complexities that arise when many elements interact in a highly dynamic system and which often evade an exact formal analysis (see, e.g., Humphreys 1991).

Empirical evidence suggests that people select friends whose extraversion is similar to their own (selection effects). However, little is known about whether friends influence extraversion development (influence effects) and about the interaction mechanisms that underlie friendship selection and influence effects. We examined whether selection and influence effects explain similarity in extraversion between friends in two independent samples. Similarity in extraversion predicted a higher likelihood of friendship selection across four years in Sample 1 (n = 1,698; Mage = 22.72, SD = 2.99; 49% female) and across a period of 16 weeks in Sample 2 (n = 131; Mage = 21.34, SD = 3.95; 77% female). Friends’ extraversion predicted increases in young adults’ extraversion in both samples. In Sample 2, we examined the interaction mechanisms underlying these selection and influence effects by combining event-based experience-sampling network dynamics with diary data on friendship network and extraversion dynamics. Findings showed that (a) similarity in extraversion predicted positive interaction quality changes and (b) positive interaction quality predicted friendship selection (bonding mechanism). In the same sample, (I) friends’ extraversion predicted friends’ sociable behavior changes, (II) friends’ sociable behavior predicted young adults’ sociable behavior changes, and (III) young adults’ sociable behavior predicted extraversion changes (behavioral mimicry mechanism). These findings provide unique insight into interaction mechanisms underlying longitudinal links between friendships and extraversion.

Smoking is a serious issue causing a variety of adverse health effects. However, pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools) do not prohibit smoking, their leaders and teachers also smoke, and cigarettes are sold freely outside. The students have further admitted that anyone may smoke any where and that no socialization on smoking has ever been conducted in pesantrens.The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between the student smoking behavior, knowledge, and attitudes towards the social marketing mix in traditional pesantrens.This study employed a descriptive analytics with the cross sectional study design.The total sample was 162 students from a pesantren in Aceh Besar, Indonesia.The results showed that there were significant relationships between student smoking behavior and age (p-value = 0.031), and parents’ smoking behavior (p-value= 0.003), and peersmoking behavior (p-value =0.000), and knowledge of the social marketing mix (p-value= 0.010), and attitudes (p-value = 0.000) towards the social marketing mix. It is thus recommended tha tall parties develop a pesantren as one of the focus areas of smoking prevention activities

In Golbeck and Hendler (2006), authors consider those social friendship networking sites where users explicitly provide trust ratings to other members. However, for large social friendship networks it is infeasible to assign trust ratings to each and every member so they propose an inferring mechanism which would assign binary trust ratings (trustworthy/non-trustworthy) to those who have not been assigned one. They demonstrate the use of these trust values in e-mail ?ltering application domain and report encouraging results. Authors also assume three crucial properties of trust for their approach to work: transitivity, asymmetry, and personalization. These trust scores are often transitive, meaning, if Alice trusts Bob and Bob trusts Charles then Alice can trust Charles. Asymmetry says that for two people involved in a relationship, trust is not necessarily identical in both directions. This is contrary to what was proposed in Yu and Singh (2003). They assume symmetric trust values in the social friendship network. Social networks allow us to share experiences, thoughts, opinions, and ideas. Members of these networks, in return experience a sense of community, a feeling of belonging, a bonding that members matter to one another and their needs will be met through being together. Individuals expand their social networks, convene groups of like-minded individuals and nurture discussions. In recent years, computers and the World Wide Web technologies have pushed social networks to a whole new level. It has made possible for individuals to connect with each other beyond geographical barriers in a “flat” world. The widespread awareness and pervasive usability of the social networks can be partially attributed to Web 2.0. Representative interaction Web services of social networks are social friendship networks, the blogosphere, social and collaborative annotation (aka “folksonomies”), and media sharing. In this work, we brie?y introduce each of these with focus on social friendship networks and the blogosphere. We analyze and compare their varied characteristics, research issues, state-of-the-art approaches, and challenges these social networking services have posed in community formation, evolution and dynamics, emerging reputable experts and in?uential members of the community, information diffusion in social networks, community clustering into meaningful groups, collaboration recommendation, mining “collective wisdom” or “open source intelligence” from the exorbitantly available user-generated contents. We present a comparative study and put forth subtle yet essential differences of research in friendship networks and Blogosphere, and shed light on their potential research directions and on cross-pollination of the two fertile domains of ever expanding social networks on the Web.

This chapter reviews old and New England society and culture, emphasizing the patriarchy that governed women’s lives. Following a general discussion of the model of household structure, the chapter addresses the social, legal, and political realities of women’s lives along with the cultural construction of women, biologically, socially, and intellectually. The chapter explores the ideological constructions of gender from, as far as possible, both a male and female perspective. The chapter also discusses the distinct women’s community, including not only women’s labor and friendship networks, but also the centrality of the reproductive community: woman as healer, midwife, and reproducer. Throughout, the chapter places the control exercised through law, custom, and prescription against the power women discovered within the female community.

Adolescent sexual behaviour may show clustering in neighbourhoods, schools and friendship networks. This study aims to assess how experience with sexual intercourse clusters across the social world of adolescents and whether predictors implicated by life history theory or personality traits can account for its between-individual variation and social patterning. Using data on 2877 adolescents from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, we ran logistic multiple classification models to assess the clustering of sexual experience by approximately 17.5 years in schools, neighbourhoods and friendship networks. We examined how much clustering at particular levels could be accounted for by life history predictors and Big Five personality factors. Sexual experience exhibited substantial clustering in friendship networks, while clustering at the level of schools and neighbourhoods was minimal, suggesting a limited role for socio-ecological influences at those levels. While life history predictors did account for some variation in sexual experience, they did not explain clustering in friendship networks. Personality, especially extraversion, explained about a quarter of friends' similarity. After accounting for life history factors and personality, substantial unexplained similarity among friends remained, which may reflect a tendency to associate with similar individuals or the social transmission of behavioural norms.

The authors use 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) data to determine how immigrant children in Italy and Spain compare with native students in reading and mathematics skills. Drawing on the vast empirical literature in countries with traditionally high rates of immigration, the authors test the extent to which the most well-established patterns and hypotheses of immigrant/native educational achievement gaps also apply to these comparatively “new” immigration countries. The authors find that both first- and second-generation immigrant students underperform natives in both countries. Although socioeconomic background and language skills contribute to the explanation of achievement gaps, significant differences remain within the countries even after controlling for those variables. While modeling socioeconomic background reduces the observed gaps to a very similar extent in both countries, language spoken at home is more strongly associated with achievement gaps in Italy. School-type differentiation, such as tracking in Italy and school ownership in Spain, do not reduce immigrant/native gaps, although in Italy tracking is strongly associated with immigrant students’ test scores.
