Hostile Media or Hostile Source? Bias Perception of Shared News

An experiment was conducted with college students to examine the effects of source and user comments on the perceptions of a shared news story embedded in a blog post. When the shared news was credited to a news organization source incongruent with the participants’ political orientation, it was perceived to be biased against the participants’ issue position. When credited to a congruent source, the same news was perceived to be biased in favor of the participants’ position. In addition, the shared news from an incongruent source was perceived to have greater influence on others’ issue position than the same news from a congruent source, although perceived reach of the shared news was not different between the two conditions. A subsequent regression analysis identified source and perceived influence, but not perceived reach, as predictors of news bias perception. On the other hand, the second factor, user comments either agreeable or disagreeable to the participants’ issue position, did not influence how the shared news was perceived. In the discussion, theoretical implications of these findings are elaborated, and suggestions are made to refine the methods of shared news research.

Many proverbs seem to convey wisdom because they help people to reframe life's predicaments. Positive reframes, such as Every cloud has a silver lining, often draw positive implications from adverse circumstances (cf. “positive reappraisals,” “gain frames”). In contrast, negative reframes, such as All that glitters is not gold, provide helpful warnings about difficult situations, and therefore encourage proactive coping (cf. “problem-focused coping”). This study examined the validity of the distinction between positive and negative reframes and whether the distinction applies to proverbs. Six judges categorized 199 proverbs as positive or negative reframes. Results showed that the positive reframes were rated by college students as more pleasant, conceptually simpler, and more familiar than the negative reframes. Further, proverbs that were composed by students were of higher quality when they were positive rather than negative reframes. On the other hand, positive and negative reframes occurred similarly often among the 199 proverbs, and did not differ consistently in rated truth, rated imagery arousal, or reading grade level. We concluded that many proverbs can be regarded as positive or negative reframes, which constitute basic thinking strategies that help people cope with life's challenges.

Background: This research discusses the problem of the use of English citation by some college students in helping with their assignments. There is still no research about this topic, on the other hand, this is actually important for education. From the problem discussed here, the main point is to know, "Do college students often use English citations in their assignments and understand the citations they have taken?" Purpose: This research aims to know how far Indonesian students' comprehension is to the English citation which they used to help their academic writing for their college assignment. Method: The method used in this study is qualitative, the method that focused on observation to obtain a more comprehensive phenomenon study. In this research, we use data that have already been taken and collected from 62 college students and 15 of them have conducted the interview process to take further information from them. Results: It shows that the majority of college students in this research prefer to use Indonesian citations because they can understand more compared with the English one.

A Privacy Questionnaire was administered to 118 male and 142 female college students to determine differences in the patterns of privacy preferences between the sexes. The questionnaire contained factor scales for measuring six independent types of privacy. t-tests showed that the means for women were significantly higher than those for men in their preferences for Intimacy with Family and Intimacy with Friends. On the other hand, for Isolation the mean for men was significantly higher than that for women. There were no significant differences between the means for the two sexes on the remaining three dimensions, Reserve, Solitude, and Anonymity.

The plurality of Indonesian society can be seen from various sides in terms of race, ethnicity, culture, religion, socioeconomic groups and even in terms of political orientation. The diversity that is owned by the people of Indonesia is a distinct characteristic that is a priceless wealth. On the other hand, although diversity is a very prestigious thing, on the other hand it can be a potential that drives conflict and division. The concept of multicultural education has a significant problem that is concerned with religious understanding. If this is the emphasis, then in the teaching of Islam the teachings are those that deal with universal values as possessed by all religions. While it is understood for certain that in Islamic religious education taught is monotheism, jurisprudence, and morality karimah. Thus it can be understood that in Islamic religious education is very strongly based in fostering civilized humans. If we pay attention, multiculturalism education does not have a strong foundation in conceptualizing its educational goals. Compared to Islamic education the foundation is clearly based on the Koran, Sunnah and Ijtihad on the ulama. So it is clear that the goal of Islamic education is the formation of attitudes, of course at the social level it is part of multiculturalism education. The attitude here is praiseworthy behavior which is a reflection of Islamic education itself.

The present study aimed to measure the link between representations of money, ethnolinguistics affiliations and the nature of corruption among agents and users of public services. The numerous legal mechanisms put in place have produced limited results without big effects. Thus, this survey raises the problem of the persistence (obstinacy) of corruption in spite of the multiple efforts taken various levels (institutional, national, and international). The sample of the study consists, on the one hand, of 100 users of public services chosen at random at the Directorate of Treasure and Public Accounting (DGTCP) and at the General Directorate of Taxes and Domains (DGID) in Benin. And on the other hand, of 50 agents in public service; identified in the two directorates according to their contact with the users in the exercise of their functions. Two different questionnaires were used to collect data on the two targets (of agents). The results from the correlation and regression analysis confirm the existence of a significant link between the representation of money, ethnolinguistics affiliations of the agents and users of public services and the behavior of corruption. The results of this research will allow authorities at various levels to better understand the behavior of corruption of the agents and users of public service and it will also be of use in the drafting of measures that aim at changing people’s behavior for an effective and productive fight against corruption.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of social performance to the profitability of sharia bank. This study uses quantitative approach with multiple regression analysis and four variables; they are Mudharabah-Musyarakah Financing, Qardh Financing, and Zakat as exogenous variables and Net income as endogenous variable.Based on findings, it revealed that Mudharabah-Musyarakah Financing and Zakat effect significantly positive to the net income of Sharia commercial bank. Meanwhile Qardh Financing has non-significantly effect to the net income of Sharia commercial bank. On the other hand, Musyarakah-Mudharabah financing, Qardh financing and Zakat simultaneously has significantly effect to the net income of Sharia commercial bank.

Political scientists generally derive their quantitative methodologies from two disparate traditions: econometric or psychometric. The psychometric tradition has made a lasting impact on political analysis through attention to issues of measurement. Measurement issues are particularly troublesome to political scientists because many interesting concepts are either latent or multidimensional. On the other hand, the econometric tradition has provided political scientists with a means of coping with macrolevel phenomena. In studying macrophenomena, the problem of few cases (there is only one American economy, for example) is handled by using longitudinal analysis. Econometrics provided tools for coping with challenges that longitudinal analysis posed for regression analysis.

This study investigated the possibility that lifelong bilingualism may lead to enhanced efficiency in the ability to shift between mental sets. We compared the performance of monolingual and fluent bilingual college students in a task-switching paradigm. Bilinguals incurred reduced switching costs in the task-switching paradigm when compared with monolinguals, suggesting that lifelong experience in switching between languages may contribute to increased efficiency in the ability to shift flexibly between mental sets. On the other hand, bilinguals did not differ from monolinguals in the differential cost of performing mixed-task as opposed to single-task blocks. Together, these results indicate that bilingual advantages in executive function most likely extend beyond inhibition of competing responses, and encompass flexible mental shifting as well.

Bicycle-sharing programs have emerged around the world. Theoretically, the effect of bicycle sharing on more conventional transit modes can take a substitute or complementary form. On one hand, bicycle sharing could substitute for conventional transit as a convenient and sustainable travel option. On the other hand, bicycle sharing may complement such transit by seamlessly connecting transit stations with origins and destinations and thus increase accessibility. However, the questions of how and to what extent bicycle-sharing programs affect public transit ridership remain to be answered, despite the attempts of a few empirical and quantitative studies. This study examined the impact of the Capital Bikeshare (CaBi) program on Metrorail's ridership in Washington, D.C. When CaBi trips were mapped, it was observed that Metrorail stations had been important origins and destinations for CaBi trips. Six of seven CaBi stations producing more than 500 trips were located close to Metrorail stations. This study conducted a regression analysis and found that public transit rider-ship was positively associated with CaBi ridership at the station level. A 10% increase in annual CaBi ridership contributed to a 2.8% increase in average daily Metrorail ridership. On the basis of these results, policy implications and recommendations are discussed.

Several years of teaching mathematics and counseling high school and junior college students has often influenced me to wonder if there is such a thing as a “fundamental” interest in mathematics—or any other subject for that matter, but especially mathematics. Has a student by the time he has reached high school or junior college even acquired such a set of likes and dislikes that he has become the kind of person who cannot become interested in mathematics on the one hand or is the kind who is naturally intensely interested in it on the other hand?
