Optimization and evaluation of dry and minimum quantity lubricating methods on machinability of AISI 4140 using Taguchi design and ANOVA

In this work, it is aimed to study the effects of dry machining and minimum quantity lubrication application on machinability in turning AISI 4140 steel by utilizing different cutting parameters. Also, this study contains effects and optimization of cutting conditions (dry and minimum quantity lubricating), feed rate, and cutting speed on surface roughness (Ra) and main cutting forces (Fc) determined by employing the Taguchi method. At the end of experiments, it was established that compared to dry machining operations, minimum quantity lubricating significantly reduced cutting tool wear, while Fc and Ra decreased in general. Analyses of variance, regression analysis, signal-to-noise ratio, and orthogonal array were employed to analyze the effects and contributions of independent variables on dependent variables. The optimum levels of the dependent variables for reducing Fc and Ra using signal-to-noise rates were established. According to signal-to-noise ratios, minimum quantity lubricating had a more important effect on Fc and Ra than dry machining. The optimal conditions for Fc and Ra were at 0.16 mm/rev feed rate, 125 m/min cutting speed at minimum quantity lubricating. Analysis of variance results demonstrated that the feed rate is the most influential independent variable on Fc (93.976 %) and Ra (89.352 %). Validation test results exhibited that the Taguchi method and regression analysis were highly achieved methods in the optimization of independent variables for dependent variables. Taguchi optimization technique and regression analysis obtained from Fc ([Formula: see text] = 0.972 and [Formula: see text] = 0.997) and Ra ([Formula: see text] = 0.985 and [Formula: see text] = 0.996) measurements match really well with the experimental data.

In this study, the effect of cutting parameters such as the depth of cut, feed rate, cutting speed and the number of inserts on surface roughness were investigated in the milling of the AISI 4140 steel. The optimal control factors for surface quality were detected by using the Taguchi technique. Experimental trials were designed according to the Taguchi L18 (21x33) orthogonal array. The statistical effects of control factors on surface roughness have been established by using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Optimal cutting parameters were obtained by using the S/N ratio values. The ANOVA results showed that the effective factors were the number of inserts and the feed rate on surface roughness. However, the depth of cut and the cutting speed showed an insignificant effect. Additionally, the First-order and Second-order regression analysis were conducted to estimate the performance characteristics of the experiment. The acquired regression equation results matched with the surface roughness measurement results. The optimal performance characteristics were obtained as a 0.5 mm depth of cut, 0.08 mm/rev feed rate, 325 m/min cutting speed and 1 number of inserts by using the Taguchi method. Additionally, the confirmation test results indicated that the Taguchi method was very prosperous in the optimization of the machining parameters to obtain the minimum surface roughness in the milling of the AISI 4140 steel.

High speed machining has many advantages in reducing time to the market by increasing the material removal rate. However, final surface quality is one of the main challenges for manufacturers in high speed machining due to the increasing of flank wear rate. In high speed machining, the cutting zone is under high pressure associated with high temperature that lead to increasing of the flank wear rate in which affect the final quality of the machined surface. Therefore, one of the main concerns to the manufacturer is to predict the flank wear to estimate and predict the surface roughness as one of the main outputs of the machining processes. The aim of this study is to determine experimentally the optimum cutting parameters: depth of cut, cutting speed (Vc) and feed rate (f) that maintaining low flank wear (Vb). Taguchi method has been applied in this experiment. The Taguchi method has been universally used in engineering analysis.  JMP statistical analysis software is used to analyse statically the development of flank wear rate during high speed milling of hardened steel AISI D2 to 60 HRD. The experiment was conducted in the following boundaries: cutting speed 200-400 m/min, feed rate of 0.01-0.05 mm/tooth and depth of cut of 0.1-0.2 mm. Analysis of variance ANOVA was conducted as one of important tool for statistical analysis. The result showed that cutting speed is the most influential input factors with 70.04% contribution on flank wear.

In this work, the analysis of the cutting speed and feed rate influence on tool wear and cutting forces in Ti6Al4V alloy dry machining is presented. The study has been focused on the machining in a transient state. The tool wear mechanisms, tool wear intensity and cutting forces evolution have been analyzed as a function of the cutting parameters. Experimental results show that the main cutting force amplitude exhibits a general trend to increase with both cutting parameters. Crater wear was more evident at high cutting speeds, whereas flank wear was present on the whole interval of the cutting parameters analyzed. Furthermore, the cutting speed shows a slightly higher influence on crater wear and the feed rate shows a higher influence on flank wear. Finally, several experimental parametric models have been obtained. These models allow predicting the evolution of crater and flank tool wear, as well as the cutting forces, as a function of the cutting parameters. Additionally, a model that allows monitoring the tool wear on the machining transient state as a function of the main cutting force amplitude has been developed.

The specific radioactivity (SA) of 125I-lysine vasopressin (LVP) was determined by analyzing the binding B (cpm/tube) of variable amounts of tracer T (cpm/tube) to a constant amount of an LVP antibody, in the presence of known quantities L (mol/tube) of LVP standards. The parameters of the equations B = f(F) and B/F = g(T), describing B as a function of free F (cpm/tube) tracer or the ratios B/F as a function of T, were first calculated by nonlinear regression analysis of the results obtained with tracer alone. Then the dependent variables B or B/F were measured in the presence of LVP and analyzed with the same equations by substituting the independent variables F or T with (F + alpha FL) and (T + alpha L), respectively, where alpha (cpm/mol) represents a measure of the SA and FL (FL = L.F/T), free LVP, respectively. The SA was thus treated as an unknown parameter to be calculated by nonlinear regression. This method was compared with the traditional interpolation of the SA from the self-displacement and standard curves. Tracer and ligand were found to have the same affinity for the binding sites, since the set of equations B = f(F + alpha FL) and B/F = g(T + alpha L), describing the binding of the tracer in the presence of LVP and equations B = f(F) and B/F = g(T) to which these equations reduce in the absence of LVP (L = 0), had identical binding parameters. To be valid, any method based on self-displacement requires that the tracer and standards have the same affinity for the binding sites.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Burr in drilling plays an important role on product quality, so analysis the burr size is essential at the final production. This paper presents the application of Taguchi method for survey the burr height and burr thickness by adding ultrasonic vibration to the process. In this paper L18 orthogonal array based on Taguchi techniques was used in the design of experiments. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determination the effect of drilling parameter on burr formation. Influence of cutting speed, feed rate and percentage of SiC particle was investigated in with and without Ultrasonic assisted drilling. Al/SiCp MMC with 5, 15 and 20 wt% of particulate SiC in dry drilling operation with TiN coated drill tools were investigated.

This study aims to determine and analyze the effect of Firm Size and Profitability on Islamic Social Reporting, and see whether Earning Growth can strengthen or weaken the relationship between independent variables to the dependent variable. This research takes object in companies registered in Jakarta Islamic Index (JII) for period 2011-2015, amounted to 30 companies and obtained by 12 companies by using purposive sampling technique. Data analysis method used is multiple regression analysis. Based on the results of simultaneous research all the variables berpegaruh against Islamic Social Reporting, but partially, only Firm Size that affect the Islamic Social Reporting. In addition, Earning Growth can not strengthen or weaken the relationship between independent variables and dependent variables.

With increasing quantities of applications of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs), the machinablity of these materials has become important for investigation. This paper presents an investigation of surface roughness and tool wear in dry machining of aluminium LM6-TiC composite using uncoated carbide tool. The experiments carried out consisted of different cutting models based on combination of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut as the parameters of cutting process. The cutting models designed based on the Design of Experiment Response Surface Methodology. The objective of this research is finding the optimum cutting parameters based on workpiece surface roughness and cutting tool wear. The results indicated that the optimum workpiece surface roughness was found at high cutting speed of 250 m min-1 with various feed rate within range of 0.05 to 0.2 mm rev-1, and depth of cut within range of 0.5 to 1.5 mm. Turning operation at high cutting speed of 250 m min-1 produced faster tool wear as compared to low cutting speed of 175 m min-1 and 100 m min-1. The wear minimum (VB = 42 μm ) was found at cutting speed of 100 m min-1, feet rate of 0.2 mm rev-1, and depth of cut of 1.0 mm until the length of cut reached 4050 mm. Based on the results of the workpiece surface roughness and the tool flank wear, recommended that turning of LM6 aluminium with 2 wt % TiC composite using uncoated carbide tool should be carried out at cutting speed higher than 175 m min-1 but at feed rate of less than 0.05 mm rev-1 and depth of cut less than 1.0 mm.

AbstractIn the present work, an attempt has been made to establish the accurate surface roughness (Ra, Rq and Rz) prediction model using response surface methodology with Box–Cox transformation in turning of Titanium (Grade-II) under minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) conditions. This surface roughness model has been developed in terms of machining parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and approach angle. Firstly, some experiments are designed and conducted to determine the optimal MQL parameters of lubricant flow rate, input pressure and compressed air flow rate. After analyzing the MQL parameter, the final experiments are performed with cubic boron nitride (CBN) tool to optimize the machining parameters for surface roughness values i. e., Ra, Rq and Rz using desirability analysis. The outcomes demonstrate that the feed rate is the most influencing factor in the surface roughness values as compared to cutting speed and approach angle. The predicted results are fairly close to experimental values and hence, the developed models using Box-Cox transformation can be used for prediction satisfactorily.

It is necessary to improve the machinability of difficult-to-cut materials such as hardened steel, nickel-based alloys, and titanium alloys as these materials offer superior properties such as chemical stability, corrosion resistance, and high strength to weight ratio, making them indispensable for many applications. Machining with self-propelled rotary tools (SPRT) is considered one of the promising techniques used to provide proper tool life even under dry conditions. In this work, an attempt has been performed to analyze, model, and optimize the machining process of AISI 4140 hardened steel using self-propelled rotary tools. Experimental analysis has been offered to (a) compare the fixed and rotary tools performance and (b) study the effect of the inclination angle on the surface quality and tool wear. Moreover, the current study implemented some artificial intelligence-based approaches (i.e., genetic programming and NSGA-II) to model and optimize the machining process of AISI 4140 hardened steel with self-propelled rotary tools. The feed rate, cutting velocity, and inclination angle were the selected design variables, while the tool wear, surface roughness, and material removal rate (MRR) were the studied outputs. The optimal surface roughness was obtained at a cutting speed of 240 m/min, an inclination angle of 20°, and a feed rate of 0.1 mm/rev. In addition, the minimum flank tool wear was observed at a cutting speed of 70 m/min, an inclination angle of 10°, and a feed rate of 0.15 mm/rev. Moreover, different weights have been assigned for the three studied outputs to offer different optimized solutions based on the designer’s interest (equal-weighted, finishing, and productivity scenarios). It should be stated that the findings of the current work offer valuable recommendations to select the optimized cutting conditions when machining hardened steel AISI 4140 within the selected ranges.
