The Mann–Whitney test is a commonly used non-parametric alternative of the two-sample t-test. Despite its frequent use, it is only rarely accompanied with confidence intervals of an effect size. If reported, the effect size is usually measured with the difference of medians or the shift of the two distribution locations. Neither of these two measures directly coincides with the test statistic of the Mann–Whitney test, so the interpretation of the test results and the confidence intervals may be importantly different. In this paper, we focus on the probability that random variable X is lower than random variable Y. This measure is often referred to as the degree of overlap or the probabilistic index; it is in one-to-one relationship with the Mann–Whitney test statistic. The measure equals the area under the ROC curve. Several methods have been proposed for the construction of the confidence interval for this measure, and we review the most promising ones and explain their ideas. We study the properties of different variance estimators and small sample problems of confidence intervals construction. We identify scenarios in which the existing approaches yield inadequate coverage probabilities. We conclude that the DeLong variance estimator is a reliable option regardless of the scenario, but confidence intervals should be constructed using the logit scale to avoid values above 1 or below 0 and the poor coverage probability that follows. A correction is needed for the case when all values from one sample are smaller than the values of the other. We propose a method that improves the coverage probability also in these cases.

Cluster randomization trials, in which intact social units are randomized to different interventions, have become popular in the last 25 years. Outcomes from these trials in many cases are positively skewed, following approximately lognormal distributions. When inference is focused on the difference between treatment arm arithmetic means, existent confidence interval procedures either make restricting assumptions or are complex to implement. We approach this problem by assuming log-transformed outcomes from each treatment arm follow a one-way random effects model. The treatment arm means are functions of multiple parameters for which separate confidence intervals are readily available, suggesting that the method of variance estimates recovery may be applied to obtain closed-form confidence intervals. A simulation study showed that this simple approach performs well in small sample sizes in terms of empirical coverage, relatively balanced tail errors, and interval widths as compared to existing methods. The methods are illustrated using data arising from a cluster randomization trial investigating a critical pathway for the treatment of community acquired pneumonia.

Back Massage technique combined with holistic aromatherapy treatment can be an effective therapy for postnatal mothers to increasing breast milk production. This study aims to analyze the effect of Miyik-miyikan aromatherapy on back massage. The increase of breast milk production in postpartum mothers can be seen from the baby’s weight gain. This study was conducted at an inpatient Primary Health Center in Denpasar, in June-October to 30 mothers. This study was designed in a quasi-experimental pre-posttest control group with a time series approach. The observation of the baby’s weight gain and breastfeeding satisfaction starts from day 1, day 7, and day 14 after delivery. This study was analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis Test and the Mann Whitney test. The result of the study showed that the Kruskal Wallis test is p <0,05, meaning that there was a difference in breast milk production in the two groups of intervention. Additionally, the Mann Whitney test showed the difference of baby weight on the 7th day to those in the Miyik-miyikan and Cananga group, and on the 14th day in the Cananga, Miyik-miyikan, and Champak group. Thus, the use of Miyik-miyikan aromatherapy on a back massage can be done earlier after delivery

Background: Lactation onset is a term of multiplying breast milk until the release of breast milk for the first time. It is also perceived by mothers as a bit hard breast, inflammed, and full of breast milk or the release of colostrum. Colostrum is the first liquid secreted by breast milk gland since the first day until the fourth day of labour. One of the factors that influences lactation onset is labour methods. Mothers who undergo sectio caesaria surgery will experience pain and prolonged effects of anesthesia compared to mothers with normal labors. Objective: To investigate the difference of colostrum releasing onset in post partum mothers with normal labors and sectio caesaria in Panembahan Senopati General Hospital, Bantul. Method: This study was quantitative with cross sectional design. The number of samples were 80 respondents selected with purposive sampling technique. Study instrument was observational sheets. Data analysis applied Mann-Whitney test. Result: The majority of respondents who had normal labors and sectio caesaria experienced different colostrum onset. In normal labors, the time of colostrum release was 1 day. In sectio caesaria labors, the time of colostrum release was 2 days. The average duration of post partum mothers with normal labors was 13,6 hours and post partum mothers with sectio caesaria was 22,6 hours. The result of Mann-Whitney test was that there was a difference between colostrum release onset of post partum mothers with normal labors and sectio caesaria with p-value of 0,001 (p<0,05). Conclusion: Colostrum onsets were different in normal labors and sectio caesaria labors. Keyword: Colostrum, Normal labors, Sectio Caesaria labors.

Diarrhea is currently still the third leading cause of under-five mortality after pneumonia. Diarrhea is one of the diseases that causes death and illness in toddlers every year. One result of diarrhea is nutritional disorders due to reduced food intake, vomiting, hypoglycemia, dehydration which causes metabolic balance disorders because fluid intake is not balanced with expenditure through vomiting and diarrhea. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in the duration of diarrhea when giving tempeh porridge to toddlers at the Puruk Cahu Health Center. The design of this study is analytic research with this type of research is Quasi Experiment using the design of the Group Control Post Test Only Design. The population in this study were toddlers who had acute diarrhea in the working area of Puruk Cahu Health Center, Murung Raya Regency and the sample size was 38 people (19 people as the control group and 19 experimental groups). The statistical test used in this study was the Mann Whitney test. The results of statistical tests using the Mann Whitney test found that p value = 0.002 means the value of p value < alpha (0.05), meaning that there is an effect of giving tempe porridge to the duration of diarrhea at Puruk Cahu Health Center. Diarrhea in the group that was not given tempeh porridge lasted longer than the group that was given tempeh porridge. The Conclusion is that there is a difference in the duration of acute diarrhea in the administration of tempe porridge for toddlers at the Puruk Cahu Health Center.

We consider a two-group randomized clinical trial, where mortality affects the assessment of a follow-up continuous outcome. Using the worst-rank composite endpoint, we develop a weighted Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test statistic to analyze the data. We determine the optimal weights for the Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test statistic that maximize its power. We derive a formula for its power and demonstrate its accuracy in simulations. Finally, we apply the method to data from an acute ischemic stroke clinical trial of normobaric oxygen therapy.

The aim of the study was the analysis of electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters in Rhodesian ridgebacks. A group of 16 Rhodesian (9 females, 7 males) in age ranges from 2 to 9 (6.2 ± 2.91) and weighing from 38kg to 56kg (44.66 ±5.78) were divided into two groups based on thyroid hormone concentration in their blood. The first group consists of 12 healthy Rhodesian ridgebacks (8 females, 4 males), and the second of 4 dogs with hypothyroidism (3 females, 1 male). Data obtained from ECG and echocardiographic examination was gathered in a computer database and submitted for analysis. The reference values were determined for ECG and echocardiographic parameters. The difference between groups was evaluated with the U Mann-Whitney test. Analyses were conducted at a significance level of p

We propose an extension of the Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test to compare two groups when the outcome variable is latent. We empirically demonstrate that the test can have superior power properties relative to tests based on Structural Equation Modeling for a variety of settings. In addition, several other advantages of the Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test are retained such as robustness to outliers and good small sample performance. We demonstrate the proposed methodology on a case study.
