Strategies of Iranian nurses to overcome professional discrimination: An explorative qualitative study

Background: Discrimination is a situation in which individuals receive unequal social benefits in return for equal roles they play. They react to such a situation in different ways. Objective: This study aims at identifying the strategies used by Iranian nurses to overcome professional discrimination. Research design: This qualitative study was conducted with the participation of 23 nurses who worked in hospitals in the cities of Tehran, Tabriz, and Ilam. They were selected based on purposive sampling. Data were collected using deep and unstructured interviews in a period of time between May 2013 and June 2014. Interviews were simultaneously analyzed using conventional content analysis method after being transcribed. Ethical consideration: This study was approved by the Regional Committee of Medical Research Ethics. Also, voluntary participation, anonymity, and confidentiality were considered. Finding: “Presenting a positive image of oneself,” “objection,” and “expectation” were three themes extracted through data analysis. Discussion: Organizational discrimination puts nurses under stress and pressure. Nurses react to unfair behavior in different ways. These reactions are harmful to an organization and lead to negative consequences. Conclusion: Professional discrimination has made nurses adopt strategies which would lead to such consequences, which in turn influences their performance as nurses.

Background: Discrimination in nursing has led to the formation of some taboos that often impact the individual’s professional development. Nurses use strategies to overcome discrimination that can lead to consequences. Research objective: This study assessed nurses’ experiences to explore the consequences of Iranian nurses’ strategies to overcome intra-professional discrimination. Research design: This qualitative content analysis study employed purposive sampling to reach 25 nurses working at educational hospitals in Tehran, Tabriz, and Ilam, Iran. The data were collected using deep and unstructured interviews along with notes in a period of time between April 2016 and May 2017. Interviews were simultaneously analyzed using inductive and conventional content analysis method after being transcribed. Ethical consideration: This study was approved by the Regional Committee of Medical Research Ethics. Also, voluntary participation, anonymity, and confidentiality were considered. Findings: Two themes emerged from our analysis due to consequences of nurses’ efforts to overcome intra-professional discrimination: “seeking justice” and “passivity.” Discussion: Nurses’ efforts to overcome professional discrimination have led to outcomes. These outcomes can be affect on their individual effort to achieve organizational goals, provide better care or feel disabling or nurses turnover. Conclusion: Strategies adopted by nurses to overcome intra-professional discrimination have led to consequences which vary from negative to positive and impact their performance.

Nurse–patient communication is the foremost step in providing professional care. Nurses can use effective communication as a simple and powerful tool to create comfort, happiness, and vitality to reduce the patient's grief and suffering. This study aimed to explain the nurses’ perception of empathetic nurse–patient communication. This qualitative study was conducted with a content analysis method in 2020. Seventeen hospital nurses were recruited with maximum variation from the educational hospitals affiliated to Qom University of Medical Sciences, Qom, Iran, and semi-structured interviews were conducted until data saturation was reached. Data analysis was performed using Graneheim and Lundman approach. Nurses establish empathetic communication with patients through three main categories of: (1) having humanistic and unique behaviors with the patients; (2) providing a calm and happy environment for the patients; and (3) reducing the patients’ fear and consolation to them. These findings indicate empathetic communication that is appropriate to the conditions and needs of hospitalized patients. The three main categories were accomplished through 14 subcategories. The finding of this study can help to develop a training framework of empathetic nurse–patient communication and design instruments for measuring it.

Background and aim: Spirituality is considered as one of the dimensions of health, along with physical, psychological and social health which includes an element of excellence and transcendence. However, it is unclear whether contemporary medical professors in Iran still considering this concept in their training program. This study assesses the professors' attitude toward considering spirituality and spiritual counseling and training during medical education among medical students.Materials and methods: This is a qualitative study with conventional content analysis method. 43 participants, who were main stakeholders in medical education were selected by convenience sampling. Data were collected using structured interviews from September to October 2017, which continued until data saturation.Ethical consideration: the principles of ethics and integrity in the research, citation and literature analysis were taken into consideration.Finding: Three main themes and their categories were extracted from analysis of data. The themes are (1) helping to solve the students' spiritual problems and challenges (2), Psycho-spiritual characteristics of medical student (3), training spiritual concepts.Conclusion: A majority of professors acknowledged the use of spirituality concepts in medical education. It seems that implementation of such programs requires attention to facilitating factors and challenges proposed by those involved.

Background. In this research, we aimed to investigate the effects of outdoor camps on orienteering athletes. Methods. The study group consisted of 74 athletes (44 males and 30 females, aged 11.94 ± 1.32 years) who participated in Bolu outdoor camp on the 3 rd –13 th of August, 2015. Interview technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used as data collection tool and content analysis method was used for data analysis. Results. Demographic factors were interpreted after the analysis of the obtained data and three main research questions were discussed under the topics of the views of athletes about the concept of Orienteering which is an outdoor sport, themes and codes regarding the purpose of Orienteering by the students who participated in the outdoor camp, and themes and codes about the outcomes of Orienteering for the students who participated in outdoor camps. Conclusion. It is suggested that a policy must be developed within the Ministry of Youth and Sport and Sport Federations in order to disseminate more deliberate and more comprehensive outdoor education among young people and measures should be taken to provide extensive participation.

Abstract Background While the use of sulphadoxine pyrimethamine (SP) is effective in preventing malaria infection during pregnancy, there are challenges limiting its uptake in Nigeria. This study aimed at exploring the barriers to IPTp usage among pregnant women in Kano state - Nigeria. Methods This is a qualitative study. The purposive sampling strategy was used for identification and selection of 14 key informants for interviews. In addition, six focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with pregnant women (3 FGDs) and married men (3 FGDs). The conventional content analysis method was used to interpret meaning from the content of the data. MAXQDA 10 software was used for data management and analysis. Results Poor policy implementation, poor antenatal care attendance, inadequate access to intermittent preventive treatment at the community levels, lack of sustainable funding, and poor community engagement emerged as major barriers to IPTp use in Nigeria. Conclusion While the political will to allocate sufficient financial resources could help improve service delivery and IPTp usage among pregnant women, community participation is critical to sustain the gains.

This research is conducted in purpose to identify types of idiomatic expressions found in “A Dog’s Journey” (2019) Movie Script. The researchers used Lim’s theory (2004). The source of data was the script of movie entitled A Dog’s Journey. The methodology which used in this research was qualitative research which specifically referred to document content analysis method. Method of collecting the data was searching the movie, downloading, watching and understanding the whole movie. After collecting the data, the researchers did data preparation, data reading, data confirmation, and calculation as the data analysis. After investigating the types of idiomatic expressions found in A Dog’s Journey (2019) movie, the researchers found 36 idiomatic expressions. The idiomatic expressions in A Dog’s Journey (2019) movie have been analyzed in types; there were 17 phrasal verbs with percentage 47,2%, 3 phrasal prepositional phrase with percentage 8,3%, 3 prepositional phrase with percentage 8,3%, 3 idioms with noun as keywords and  with percentage 8,3% , 5 idioms with verb as keywords and  with percentage 13,8%, 4 idioms with adjective as keywords and with percentage 11,1% and 1 idiomatic pairs with percentage 2,7%. The conclusion of this research was the dominant of idiomatic expression used in A Dog’s Journey (2019) movie is phrasal verb.

The purpose of this study is to examine how selected stories, which are written in Turkish by local or foreign authors for preschoolers, deal with honesty. In this basic interpretive qualitative study, data were collected through document analysis and analyzed through content analysis. Analyzed documents are twenty-one picture books, which written in Turkish for preschoolers published between 2004 and 2015, nine stories about honesty published online by four Turkish Provincial Directorates of National Education and one story about honesty published online by the Center for Values Education. The software NVivo 11 was used to conduct computer-assisted data analysis. The results of this study demonstrate that most of the analyzed texts use “dishonesty and its negative consequences” more than “honesty and its positive outcomes” to promote honesty.

This study is focused on analysis of the politeness expressed by the main characters and supporting characters in “Beauty and the Beast” Movie. The objective of this study are to know the politeness expressed by the main characters; Beauty (Belle) and the Beast (Prince) and to know the politeness expressed by the supporting characters in “Beauty and the Beast” movie. This Study is qualitative research that used content analysis method. Technique of data analysis in this study is using descriptive qualitative. The result of analysis are the sum of expression of politeness in saying thank you are 8 expressions, in saying hello are 7 expression, in answer the saying hello are 2 expressions, in use ‘I’m sorry’ are 5 expression and of how to sound more polite are 5 expressions. The sum of all expression of politeness that expressed by the characters in “Beauty  and the Beast” movie are 27 expressions. Based on the discussion of the result of analysis, It can be concluded that expression of politeness is important in communication and it usually use in conversation when people in saying hello or greeting, when people answer the saying hello or greeting from others, when people ask with the sound more polite, and the last when people saying use ‘I’m sorry’ to refused and ignore something and ask to forgiven by other people. This study can be applied to conduct the learning material in teaching about the  English expression in conversation, especially expression of politeness.

This research intends to describe the types of deviations contained in the collection of poems Calligrammes by Guillaume Apollinaire. The approach used is a qualitative approach with content analysis method. The data collection technique used is Miles and Huberman. The theory used as the main reference is the deviation theory according to Geoffrey N. Leech which divides the deviation into eight types, namely lexical deviation, phonological deviation, grammatical deviation which includes morphological and syntactic, graphological deviation, semantic deviation, dialectal deviation, deviation of register, and deviation of historical period. The result of data analysis from 7 poems found 5 out of 8 types of deviation which are diffused in each poem, including 24 semantic deviations, 18 graphological deviations, 4 deviations of register, 3 syntactic deviations and 2 lexical deviations. While the types of phonological deviation, morphological deviation, dialectal deviation, and deviation of historical period are not found in any of the data in this collection of poems Calligrammes.

This study aims to describe the results of the analysis of the conative meanings of Covid-19 hate speech on social media. The data of this study were excerpts from Covid-19 hate speech text on social media in March-May 2020. The data were collected by referring to the note taking technique as the basic technique. Data analysis were performed using the content analysis method. The design analysis method used was the estimated content analysis design. This design utilized all the knowledge researchers have in analyzing data about the conative meaning of Covid-19 hate speech. The results showed that Covid-19's hate speech had the following conative meanings: (1) insulting, (2) criticizing, (3) railing, (4) provoking, (5) harrasing, (6) blasheming, (7) insinuating, and (8) defaming. The results of this study are useful for building critical awareness of the community in the face of hate speech that is constantly present through social media in the community.
