Investigating the effect of oxalic acid and salicylic acid treatments on the post-harvest life of temperate grown apricot varieties (Prunus armeniaca) during controlled atmosphere storage

This study aimed at investigating the influence of different postharvest treatments with oxalic acid (OA) and salicylic acid (SA) on quality attributes and postharvest shelf life of temperate grown apricot varieties stored under controlled atmosphere (CA) storage conditions. After each treatment was given, the samples were stored in CA store maintained at a temperature of 0 °C, 90 ± 5% relative humidity, 5% oxygen and 15% carbon dioxide for 30 days. Results indicated that both OA and SA treatments significantly (p ≤ 0.05) retained total soluble solids, titratable acidity, color profile, ascorbic acid content and total phenolic content of apricot varieties and had a positive effect on antioxidant activity and texture of samples compared to control. However, carotenoid content was found to be higher in control. Both the treatments reduced chilling injury index, weight loss and decay percentage of samples. Moreover, it was found that SA treatment was the most effective treatment in maintaining visual color of apricots while OA maintained fruit firmness and effectively decreased the decay percentage and chilling injury index of apricot varieties. In conclusion, it was found that both OA and SA have the potential to extend storage life of apricots and maintain quality attributes of the crop during CA storage.

ABSTRACT Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) is a root crop grown in many countries. This tuberous root is a source of energy, nutrients, and phytochemicals. In this study, bioactive compounds and physical and physicochemical qualities of sweetpotato genotypes were evaluated. Eight new genotypes of sweetpotato produced by Embrapa Hortaliças (orange-fleshed: MD09026-OF and MD09024-OF; cream-fleshed: MD09011-CF, MD09004-CF, MD10039-CF, and MD10004-CF; yellow-fleshed: MD09017-YF and MD12002-YF) and two cultivars used as controls (Beauregard and Brazlândia Roxa) were evaluated for color, soluble solids, dry matter, phenolic compounds, total carotenoids and β-carotene. Hue angles differed even between those sweetpotatoes with the same flesh color. The orange-fleshed genotypes MD09024-OF, MD09026-OF, and Beauregard, had the lowest L*, showing to be darker than the others. These sweetpotatoes also had the brightest flesh colors with higher C*. The orange-fleshed genotypes MD09026-OF and MD09024-OF were sweeter (10.55oBrix and 9.23oBrix) than Beauregard (5.12oBrix). Brazlândia Roxa had the highest dry matter content (38.05%), followed by the genotypes MD10004-CF, MD09017-YF, MD09026-OF MD10039-CF, and MD09011-CF, which showed similarity, ranging from 32.33% to 29.12%. The highest contents of total carotenoids were found for the orange-fleshed genotypes MD09026-OF (80.06 mg g-1) and MD09024-OF (70.56 mg g-1) and Beauregard (73.12 mg g-1). These same genotypes showed the highest total phenolic compounds (0.815 mg g-1 and 0.686 mg g-1, respectively). MD09026-OF showed the highest content of β-carotene (46.47 mg g-1). MD09026-OF was the most prominent genotype among those evaluated, as it showed the highest total carotenoid, β-carotene, phenolic compounds, and soluble solids content, in addition to a high dry matter content.

‘Honeycrisp’ apples are susceptible to bitter pit, a physiological disorder that impacts peel and adjacent cortex tissue. ‘Honeycrisp’ is also susceptible to chilling injury (CI) that can be prevented by holding fruit at 10 to 20 °C after harvest for up to 7 days. This temperature conditioning period reduces CI risk but can enhance bitter pit development. Previous research demonstrated a controlled atmosphere (CA) established during conditioning can reduce ‘Honeycrisp’ bitter pit development without inducing other physiological disorders. The objective of this research was to evaluate the duration of CA needed to reduce bitter pit development. Experiments were conducted in 2014, 2016, and 2017 with fruit obtained from commercial orchards in Washington State and, in 2017 only, Ontario, Canada. Half the fruit were treated with 42 µmol·L−1 1-methycyclopropene (1-MCP) for 24 hours at 10 °C immediately following harvest. The untreated fruit were held at the same temperature (10 °C) in a different cold room. Following 1-MCP treatment, all fruit were conditioned at 10 °C for an additional 6 days, then fruit was cooled to 2.8 °C. During conditioning, fruit were held in air or CA (2.5 kPa O2, 0.5 kPa CO2) established 1 day after harvest, for 1 to 8 weeks, then in air. All fruit were removed from cold storage after 4 months and then held 7 days at 20 °C. Fruit from most orchards/years stored in CA developed less bitter pit compared with fruit stored continuously in air. CA during conditioning also reduced poststorage peel greasiness but CA for 2 weeks or longer enhanced cortex cavity development in some orchard lots. Treatment with 1-MCP did not reduce bitter pit but enhanced development of peel leather blotch and core browning for some orchards/years. 1-MCP–treated fruit slowed the loss of soluble solids content, titratable acidity, and reduced internal ethylene concentration. Results suggest the potential for postharvest management of bitter pit development in ‘Honeycrisp’ apples by CA established during conditioning with minimal development of other postharvest disorders.

Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris is a thermoacidophilic, spore-forming bacillus. A. acidoterrestris and its spores can survive in pasteurized juices and cause microbial spoilage. In this work, the effects of ultraviolet-C light-emitting diodes at 275 nm on the inactivation of A. acidoterrestris vegetative cells and its spores in commercial pasteurized orange juice were studied. Meanwhile, the effects of ultraviolet-C light-emitting diodes on the quality attributes of the orange juice were also investigated. The quantities of A. acidoterrestris vegetative cells and its spores inoculated in orange juice were reduced by 6.04 and 2.49 log10 CFU/mL after ultraviolet-C light-emitting diode treatment at 220 mJ/cm2, respectively. The Weibull and Weibull plus tail models were satisfactorily fitted to estimate the reductions of A. acidoterrestris vegetative cells and its spores in orange juice, respectively. Physicochemical properties (pH, titratable acidity, total soluble solids, and clarity) of orange juice did not change significantly after exposure to ultraviolet-C light-emitting diodes. However, the total phenolic content of orange juice decreased with increasing fluence. In addition, ultraviolet-C light-emitting diode treatment at a higher fluence led to a noticeable color difference. These results indicate that ultraviolet-C light-emitting diode treatment has a potential application in the juice processing industry.

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of growing medium in greenhouse cultivation on the yield and fruits quality of “cherry” tomato two cultivars. Cultivars ‘Dasher F1’ and ‘Pareso F1’ were chosen for the experiment. The growing mediums compared were: standard mineral wool slabs and coconut fibre slabs, chosen as an environmentally friendly alternative to mineral wool. Tomato seeds were sown in December; seedlings were planted to the experimental greenhouse in January. The fruits were harvested at 5th stage of maturity, according to USDA classification (i.e. ‘light-red’), and subjected to analyses. Harvest terms for quality evaluation of the fruits were June and September. There were determined for the fruits: total and marketable yield, and quality parameters: pH of the fruit juice, titratable acidity, total sugars, soluble solids, total phenolic acids, lycopene, α-carotene and β-carotene contents. The results showed that the fruits harvested in September showed a higher dry matter and carotenoid content that the fruits harvested in June. However, the fruits harvested in June were characterized by a higher total sugars content, higher pH of the juice and higher soluble solids content. The plants grown in both mediums had fruits of similar quality, but the plants grown in coconut fibre showed noticeably higher total yield. Therefore, it can be concluded that the coconut fibre can be used as the environmentally friendly medium for greenhouse cultivation of ‘cherry’ tomatoes, the alternative to mineral wool.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the physicochemical composition, the bioactive compounds, and the total antioxidant activity of the fruit pulps of abiu (Pouteria caimito), achachairu (Garcinia humilis), araza (Eugenia stipitata), bilimbi (Averrhoa bilimbi), and yellow mangosteen (Garcinia xanthochymus) from the Brazilian Amazon biome. Total soluble solid content, total and reducing sugar contents, titratable acidity contents, pH, ascorbic acid content, moisture, protein, lipid, ash, and caloric value were determined. The contents of total anthocyanins, yellow flavonoids, and total carotenoids, besides total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity, were also evaluated. The abiu pulp showed the highest contents of ash, total sugars, reducing sugars, total soluble solids, calorie value, and pH, among the analyzed fruits. The achachairu pulp showed the highest content of total phenolic compounds, with significant antioxidant activity, while the araza pulp had the highest total carotenoid content, and the yellow mangosteen, the highest yellow flavonoid content. The positive correlation between antioxidant activity and total phenolic compounds suggests that these compounds are the most important for determining antioxidant activity in the evaluated fruit pulps.

Fruit quality attributes were studied for two consecutive years in seven blackberry cultivars grown in a Serbian climate and on acidic soil. Physical parameters [berry weight (BW), size and shape] and chemical parameters [soluble solids content (SSC), acidity, total phenolic (TPH) and flavonoid content (TFC) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC)] were evaluated. A high variability was found in the set of the evaluated blackberry cultivars and significant differences were found among them in all studied quality attributes. Year-by-year variations were observed for all quality traits, except berry length (L) and berry shape index (BSI). A high correlation was found among TPH and TAC. In addition, most of cultivars had good adaptation capability and respectable fruit quality attributes, and also had good potential as a commercial crop for fresh and processing markets and future breeding programs.

Snap bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) is sensitive vegetable which can develop chilling injury when stored at low temperatures. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of controlled atmosphere (CA) (2.5±0.5 %O2, 5±0.5 %CO2) and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) (0.5 μL/L) on chilling injury (CI) of snap bean during 35 days storage at 0 °C. The results showed that CA and 1-MCP reduced chilling injury symptoms, however, the CA combined 1-MCP treatment which delayed the respiration peak appeared and the chilling injury index achieved 1.9. The treatment decreased electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde content and activities of PPO, which were significantly lower than CA and 1-MCP singly. These results suggested that combination of CA and 1-MCP treatment is promising treatment for alleviating chilling injury of snap bean stored at 0 °C which extending the shelf-life.

The effects of combinations of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) based ethylene scrubbers on the storage life and fruit quality of nectarine (Prunus persica cv. Bayramiç Beyazı) were investigated. Three different types of ethylene sachets (contained 3, 7 and 10 g KMnO4) were used and placed beside fruits in polypropylene baskets then lined with MAP. Fruits were stored at 0-1°C and 90% relative humidity throughout 40 day. During the cooling storage period, O2 and CO2 percentage in MAP, fruit firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid, total flavonoid content, total phenolic content, total antioxidant content and chilling injury (CI) were determined at 10 day interval. KMnO4 treated fruits had shown delayed ripening, reduced respiration and retained of higher firmness. As the dose of KMnO4 treatment increased, it was determined more positive effect on fruit quality. 10 g KMnO4 treatment was most effective in the retention of higher biochemical compounds and inhibition of CI symptoms. The results indicate that KMnO4 treatment, as well as MAP application, should be highly recommended for retaining the fruit quality of cold-stored ‘Bayramiç Beyazı’ nectarines and fruits treated with 10 g doses of KMnO4 could be stored for 40 days with good quality.

Pineapple cold storage at sub-optimal temperature (4 ± 2 °C) and duration of storage (0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days) was periodically tracked to investigate its effect on physical injuries known as chilling injury (CI) and internal browning (IB), which contribute to degradation of pineapple’s quality attributes (i.e., pH, total soluble solids (TSS) concentration, ascorbic acid (AA) content, ion leakage (EL), antioxidant capacity, and total phenolic content (TPC). In this study, three main Malaysian pineapple cultivars were evaluated based on the hypothesis that pineapple’s physical injuries (CI and IB) affect the quality attributes, phenolic content, and antioxidant capacity.  Towards day 28 of sub-optimal cold storage treatment, cv. Morris (Queen) showed higher CI and IB incidences. However, the incidences were not statistically significant at a significance level of 0.05 in two other pineapple varieties cv. Josephine (hybrid, between ‘Johor’ Spanish and Smooth Cayenne) and cv. MD-2 or gold (the hybrid of Smooth Cayenne)), which exhibited resistance to CI and IB. Meanwhile, it was found that sub-optimal cold storage up to 28 days affects CI and IB of three main Malaysian pineapple cultivars regardless of their genetic capability towards these injuries. Further, the study revealed that CI and IB symptoms were correlated with a decrease in TSS and pH, and an increase in the percentage of EL, TPC, antioxidant capacity, and antioxidant activities measured by FRAP and DPPH, respectively. Meanwhile, in terms of overall quality attributes result with focus interaction of TPC and antioxidant capacity, cv. MD-2 was observed to be impacted the most during sub-optimal cold storage. The study concluded that CI and IB conditions were positively correlated with the degradation of quality attributes as reflected in TSS content, pH, EL, TPC content, and total antioxidant capacity.
