Perioperative blood glucose concentrations in kittens following overnight fasting and gonadectomy

Objectives The objective of this study was to determine if hypoglycemia is an effect of overnight fasting and gonadectomy in kittens, as well as to determine predictors of baseline and postoperative blood glucose. Methods This was a prospective observational study. Seventy-five kittens between the age of 8 and 16 weeks undergoing routine castration or ovariohysterectomy at an animal shelter were included. Two blood glucose measurements were analyzed per kitten after an overnight fast: a baseline reading prior to preoperative examination, and a reading immediately postoperatively. Predictors of the baseline and postoperative blood glucose levels were determined using multi-level mixed-effects linear regression. Results Kittens, when fasted overnight, were not hypoglycemic (<60 mg/dl). No kittens exhibited clinical signs consistent with hypoglycemia. No kittens had a blood glucose <70 mg/dl postoperatively. Postoperative hyperglycemia (>150 mg/dl) was observed in 44% of kittens. The only predictor of fasted blood glucose levels was body condition score. The only predictor of postoperative blood glucose levels was the fasting blood glucose value. Conclusions and relevance Overnight fasting prior to elective sterilization in 8- to 16-week-old kittens did not result in hypoglycemia. Concern regarding hypoglycemia after a prolonged fast in kittens may be unwarranted for short procedures in healthy animals.

Abstract Low blood glucose levels at the start of farrowing have been associated with increased farrowing duration and stillbirth rate. This study evaluated changes in sow blood glucose (BG) on the day of farrowing and investigated relationships between sow and litter parameters and BG. The study was carried out over 12 h from 0600h (time of last feeding) on the day sows were induced to farrow (d 115 of gestation) as a cross-sectional survey using 42 sows/gilts of which 32 farrowed. Blood samples (1.2 μL) were collected from an ear vein of each sow every 2 h from 0600 h; glucose was measured using a glucometer (Accuchek Aviva; Roche Diabetes Care, Inc., Indianapolis, IN). Sow parameters recorded included parity, body condition score (BCS: 1 = extremely thin to 5 = extremely fat), number of piglets born, total litter birth weight, and farrowing duration. Linear relationships between sow parameters and BG were developed using PROC REG of SAS. Sows that farrowed had similar (P &gt; 0.05) BG to those that did not (84.4 vs. 86.8 mg/dL; SEM 1.76). Regression relationships between sow parameters and BG were generally weak (adjusted R2 ≤ 0.20). There was no effect (P &gt; 0.05) of time after feeding, time after start of farrowing, or time interval between piglet births on BG. Average BG levels increased linearly (P &lt; 0.05) with sow BCS (7.6 mg/dL/BCS; SE 2.63) but decreased linearly (P &lt; 0.05) with sow parity (-2.5 mg/dL/litter; SE 0.96), litter size (-0.8 mg/dL/piglet; SE 0.28), litter weight (-0.06 mg/dL/kg; SE 0.26), and farrowing duration (-1.8 mg/dL/h; SE 0.82). In contrast to previous research, changes in BG from last feed to start of farrowing (which ranged from 0 to 9 h) and relationship with other sow and litter parameters were relatively limited.

Data were obtained from 89 Holstein cows, distributed among seven commercial herds, to evaluate the incidence of metabolic disorders during the periparturient transition period. The herds were enrolled in the Dairy Herd Improvement Program (DHIP) and were routinely visited by veterinarians, who diagnosed any metabolic disorders. The cows were observed every two weeks to evaluate body condition score (1 to 5 scale), to discern clinical disorders and to obtain blood samples for chemical analyses. Clinical metabolic diseases were not diagnosed, but 34% of the cows showed sub-clinical hypocalcaemia (blood calcium less than 7.9 mg/dl) and 14% had blood glucose levels less than 39.9 mg/dl. Although not significant (P greater than 0.05), milk production was higher at the second and third milk weighings in the normal cows than in those with sub-clinical hypocalcaemia (27.5 and 25.6 vs. 25.1 and 23.6 kg, respectively). The interval between parturition and first service was shorter in cows with normal blood calcium levels than in those that suffered sub-clinical hypocalcaemia (74 vs. 91 days, P less than 0.05). Mean body condition score of the cows without sub-clinical hypocalcaemia or sub-normal blood glucose levels was higher than that of cows with these conditions (2.5 vs. 2.3 in both criteria, P less than 0.05). It is concluded that postpartum blood calcium concentrations affect the interval from parturition to first service and that the probability of occurrence of hypocalcaemia after parturition can be estimated from prepartum blood calcium concentrations.

The present studies examined the relationship between fasting blood glucose and Hb A1cin C57BL/6J, DBA/2J, and KK/HlJ mice with and without diabetes mellitus. Daily averaged blood glucose levels based on continuous glucose monitoring and effects of 6-h vs. overnight fasting on blood glucose were determined. Daily averaged blood glucose levels were highly correlated with Hb A1c, as determined with a hand-held automated device using an immunodetection method. R2values were 0.90, 0.95, and 0.99 in KK/HIJ, C57BL/6J, and DBA/2J, respectively. Six-hour fasting blood glucose correlated more closely with the level of daily averaged blood glucose and with Hb A1cthan did blood glucose following an overnight fast. To validate the immunoassay-determined Hb A1c, we also measured total glycosylated hemoglobin using boronate HPLC. Hb A1cvalues correlated well with total glycosylated hemoglobin in all three strains but were relatively lower than total glycosylated hemoglobin in diabetic DBA/2J mice. These results show that 6-h fasting glucose provides a superior index of glycemic control and correlates more closely with Hb A1cthan overnight-fasted blood glucose in these strains of mice.

Abstract Background Cervical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been widely accepted as adjunctive therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy and major depression. Its effects on glycemic control in humans were however poorly understood. The aim of our study was to investigate the potential effects of VNS on fasting blood glucose in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.Methods Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who had received VNS implants at the same hospital in a randomized, controlled trial were retrospectively studied. Effects on fasting blood glucose, weight, body mass index and blood pressure were evaluated at 4, 8 and 12 months of follow-up.Results 32 subjects (11 females/21males, 19±9 years, body mass index 22.2±4.0 kg/m 2 ) completed 12-month follow-up. At the 4 months, there were no significant changes in fasting blood glucose concentrations from baseline to follow-up in both Sham-VNS (4.89±0.54 vs. 4.56±0.54 mmol/L, p=0.101) and VNS (4.80±0.54 vs. 4.50±0.56 mmol/L, p=0.117) groups. However, after 8 (4.90±0.42 mmol/L, p=0.001) and 12 (4.86±0.40 mmol/L, p=0.002) months of VNS, fasting blood glucose levels significantly increased compared to baseline values (4.52±0.54 mmol/L). Changes in fasting blood glucose concentrations at both 8 (R 2 =0.502, p<0.001) and 12 (R 2 =0.572, p<0.001) months were negatively correlated with baseline fasting blood glucose levels.Conclusions Our study suggests that chronic cervical VNS elevates fasting blood glucose levels with commonly used stimulation parameters in patients with epilepsy.Trial registration: VNSRE, NCT02378792. Ingesting quality carbohydrates has been shown to be essential for dancers. Given that most dance classes take place in the morning, it has been recommended that dancers eat a well-balanced breakfast containing carbohydrates, fats, and protein as a means of fueling this activity. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a moderate glycemic index energy (MGI) bar or a fasting condition on dancers’ blood glucose levels and perceived pleasure-displeasure response during the first dance class of the day. In a randomized counterbalanced design, 10 female preprofessional dance students took their regular scheduled contemporary dance class, on four separate occasions. On each occasion, they consumed either a commercially prepared carbohydrate (CHO)-dense energy bar (47.3 g CHO) or water (FAST). Plasma glucose responses and pleasure-displeasure affect were measured before and at two time points during the class. Dancers who consumed the MGI bar had significantly greater peak blood glucose levels at all time points than those who fasted (p<0.05). Regarding affective state measures, participants who had breakfast had significantly greater pleasure scores than those who only ingested water (p<0.05). In conclusion, results suggest that CHO with an MGI value positively impacts blood glucose concentrations during a dance class. Further, we conclude that skipping breakfast can have an unfavorable effect on the pleasure-displeasure state of dancers. These findings highlight the impact of breakfast on how one feels, as well as the physiological and metabolic benefits of CHO as an exogenous energy source in dancers.

Health status and micronutrient intake among vegetarian and non-vegetarian in BaliBackground: Several studies have reported that vegetarian diets have health benefits for those adopting the diets.Objective: This study aimed to compare anemia status and micronutrient intake between vegetarians and non-vegetarians in Bali.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Bali. A total of 240 samples consisting of 160 vegetarians and 80 non-vegetarians were randomly selected. Hemoglobin (Hb) and fasting blood sugar levels were measured using the cyanmethemoglobin method and enzymatic colorimetric, respectively. Meanwhile, the data on micronutrient intakes were collected by interviews using the semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the Mann-Whitney test was performed to analyze the differences.Results: The study’s results showed that the mean Hb levels in the vegetarian group were significantly lower than non-vegetarians (p=0.002; p<0.05), and the anemia status in vegetarian women were higher (22.5%) than non-vegetarian women (2.5%). The mean fasting blood glucose level in non-vegetarians was significantly higher than in the vegetarian group (p=0.000; p<0.05). There were no differences in zinc (Zn) intake between vegetarians and non-vegetarians, but there were significant differences (p<0.05) in vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folic acid, magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and iron (Fe) intakes.Conclusions: There were differences in anemia status and fasting blood glucose levels between vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The fasting blood glucose levels of non-vegetarians were higher than vegetarians, and there were differences in the intake of certain micronutrients between vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the antidiabetic activity of papaya flower ethanol extract (Carica papaya L.) against male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by alloxan. This research is experimental. Fifteen rats were divided into 5 treatment groups, each group consisted of 3 rats. The first group was the negative control group given Aquades, the second group was positive control given Glibenklamid, the three groups were 200 mg dose variation groups, four groups were 400 mg dose variations, and the five groups were 800 mg dose variations. Previously, rats were examined fasting blood glucose levels, then mice were induced by an alloxan dose of 120 mg / kgBW intraperitoneally. On the 3rd day blood glucose levels were examined and then treated according to groups for 7 days, measurement of blood glucose levels after the treatment was carried out once every 3 days namely day 3, day 7, and day 10. Data obtained were then analyzed statistically using SPSS , including normality test (Shapiro-Wilk), homogeneity test (Levene), ANOVA test (One way). The results of this study indicate that Papaya Flower (Carica papaya L.) Terhadap Tikus Putih Jantan (Rattus norvegicus) Yang Diinduksi Aloksan. Penelitian ini bersifat eksperimental. Sebanyak 15 ekor tikus dibagi ke dalam 5 kelompok perlakuan masing- masing kelompok terdiri dari 3 ekor tikus. Kelompok pertama kelompok Kontrol negatif yang diberikan Aquades, Kelompok kedua Kontrol Positif yang diberikan Glibenklamid, kelompok tiga kelompok variasi dosis 200 mg, kelompok empat kelompok variasi dosis 400 mg, dan kelompok lima kelompok variasi dosis 800 mg. Sebelumnya tikus dilakukan pemeriksaan kadar glukosa darah puasa, selanjutnya tikus diinduksi Aloksan dosis 120 mg/kgBB secara intraperitoneal. Pada hari ke 3 diperiksa kadar Glukosa darah kemudian diberikan perlakuan sesuai kelompok selama 7 hari, pengukuran kadar glukosa darah setelah perlakuan dilakukan 3 hari sekali yaitu hari ke 3, hari ke 7, dan hari ke 10. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan SPSS, meliputi uji normalitas (Shapiro-Wilk), uji homogenitas (Levene), uji ANOVA (One way). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Ekstrak Etanol Bunga Pepaya (Carica papaya L.)  dapat memberikan efek penurunan kadar glukosa darah yang paling baik yaitu pada dosis 800 mg. Kata kunci : Antidiabetik, Ekstrak Bunga pepaya (Carica papaya L.), Diabettes Mellitus, TikusPutih Jantan (Rattus norvegicus), Aloksan.
