Based on the hierarchy of influences model, we explored journalists’ understanding and perceptions about media convergence in Pakistan’s media industry and its influence on journalistic practices and routines. In-depth interviews with Pakistani news practitioners revealed several challenges hindering the successful implementation of media convergence in Pakistan. These challenges included the lack of resources for incorporating digital technologies, the lack of financial incentives, and stringent journalistic work routines, we found that technology-induced routines have severely affected both the personal and the professional lives of media practitioners. The adoption of convergence in Pakistan has been largely based on economic and commercial concerns rather than attempts to improve the quality of media content. Overall, the work contributes to the media convergence literature by providing insights from an emerging non-Western media system.

This paper addresses two types of technological media convergence: media convergence based on mobile technology, and also convergence based on the unification between IT and media industry. These forms are influenced by the multimedia aspects of the content. The research interest in this study is related to media landscape in Romania and its state. Even if many academics and practitioners consider media convergence only at the content level from journalistic perspective, this topic has many more detail aspects and trends. Thus, media convergence in terms of content can be now interpreted together with the user’s content and takes into consideration the unification between paid, owned, shared and earned content. This paper proposes a theoretical and practical perspective for the relationship between convergence and multimedia for online media products. This perspective belongs both to media producers and to online consumers of information. The paper is interesting in that it reveals the challenges facing the media industries, and shows approaches of convergence that are related to multimedia for media products. The methodological framework uses the content analysis and the hierarchical cluster analysis to discover different forms of convergence in online media. The main conclusion of this study shows that due to various technologies and their partnerships, convergence can be directed both from the users to the media industry, and conversely.

The article gives the rationale for the necessity of developing a theoretical and methodological basis of mass media theory and up-dating its research tools. It is shown that the main direction of further research should be its mathematization and software-based algorithm development of models for managing information flows. It is established that in order to implement this idea it is necessary to apply a process approach to mass media system research as solutions based on the process approach significantly increase the potential for planning and forecasting changes in the media system, as well as forming effective models of information flows management. In the framework of the process approach, mass information activities are considered as processes that result in creating an information product meeting the needs of a particular consumer or a group of consumers. By integrating all the information product processes that take place in media organizations, a process-type media system that in general results in meeting information needs of the society relevant to peoples interests, preferences and requests is formed. In order to study the system, the authors highlight its most important properties such as integrity, nonadditivity and focus. It is demonstrated that it is impossible to apply conventional mathematical methods and models in the conditions of transient influence of external factors and nonlinear interrelations between processes. The authors prove that revealed interrelations can be successfully visualized by means of cognitive mapping. The authors suggest а cognitive map for evaluation of mass media performance, where a target concept is the level of awareness of the population that provides them with landmarks to guide themselves in the world while governing concepts are the quantity demanded and supplied and the quality of information products. At the same time, it is specified that the quality of mass media products is determined by mass media accessibility, promptness, reliability and feedback from consumers. The proposed cognitive map is formalized by means of fuzzy information about concepts and power of their influence, which is presented in the form of a knowledge database according to fuzzy logic rules. Use of the given knowledge database allows to develop an algorithm for evaluating performance of the media system with the help of MATLAB Fuzzy Logic Toolbox, which provides an opportunity to set performance targets and thus to give different scenarios of information flows management.

Accelerated adoption of technological innovations and the transition to a digital economy raise many debatable issues, and they affect the media industry. At the same time, the national media industry in the era of technological, sociocultural and economic transformations has the role of an information integrator of innovations. Transformations in the media sphere, the reform stage, raise a number of issues requiring substantiation. The article is aimed at posing a multidimensional problem, namely, the problem of the media component of digital reforms. This aspect of the study allows us to reveal both the positive factors of improving the media sphere during its transition to a new level, and to reveal the gaps of the media system developing in the digital paradigm. The article offers an analysis of the modern concept of the media industry. In the 21st century, media appear as a multifunctional system, where priority is given to the interdisciplinarity of knowledge, competencies and skills, this also updates the criteria for media education. The justification of the term “ecosystem” in this article as applied to media helps to trace the relationship between the fundamental vectors of development of this most important social institution - it is these vectors that underpin the media structure as a market entity.

Abstract: This paper discusses how the capitalist media industry has been structurally transformed in the age of digital communications. It takes an approach that is grounded in the Marxian critique of the political economy of the media. It draws a distinction between media capital, media-oriented capital, media infrastructure capital and media-external capital as the forms of capital in the media industry. The article identifies four capital strategies that media capital tends to use in order to try to maximise profits: a) The substitution of “old” by “new” media technology, b) the introduction of new transmission channels for “old” media products, c) the definition of new property rights for media sectors and networks, d) the reduction of production and transaction costs. The drive to profit maximization is at the heart of the capitalist media industry’s structural transformation. This work also discusses the tendency to the universalization of the media system in the digital age and the economic contradictions arising from it. It identifies activity fields of the media industry’s structural transformation and shows how the concentration of the capitalist media markets is an essential, contradictory and inherent feature of the capitalist media system and its structural transformation. The paper identifies six causes of why capital seeks to employ capital strategies that result in the media industry’s structural transformation. They include market saturation, overaccumulation, the tendency of the profit rate to fall, capital-concentration, competition pressure, and advertising. The paper finally discusses the role of the state as an agent of capital in general and media capital in particular. It discusses the role of the state in privatisations, neoliberal deregulation, the formation of national competitive states, and various benefits that the state provides for media capital. This contribution shows that capital and capitalism are the main structural transformers of the media and communications system. For understanding these transformations, we need an approach that is grounded in Marx’s critique of the political economy.Translation from German: Christian Fuchs and Marisol Sandoval

With the technological background of media convergence, industry convergence has gradually become closer, and cultural adaptation strategies have progressively prospered. Phenomenon can be embodied as best-selling novels being adapted for the “big screen,” films being turned into video games and international TV formats for national audiences. For example, of the top ten movies in 2016, seven of the movies are prequels or sequels related to existing movies, and/or are based on novels and comics [1]. This situation is not limited to movies and dramas, other forms (such as drama) have also begun to undergo cultural adaptation [2]. This essay will first define the cultural adaptation strategy based on various perspectives, analyze the characteristics of the media industry, and finally explain why cultural adaptations are such a prevalent strategy in the media business. Cultural adaptations

Although the Internet has become the essence of communication, from an advertiser’s perspective digital advertising remains underexplored. This paper examines the effects of digital media buying efforts on advertisers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while looking into the methodology of digital media usage behind the actual effects. A combination of secondary research analysis and qualitative research techniques was used. The empirical part is based on in-depth interviews with advertisers and representatives from the digital advertising industry.Perceptions and knowledge of digital advertising are the key drivers for a successful implementation of digital media buying, and advertisers in Bosnia and Herzegovina are aware of its most distinctive qualities. The success of the media buying campaigns relies on brand objectives and choosing the means suited for fulfilling the given goals, which in turn leads to the findings that the focus of companies’ strategies is directed towards the cost-efficient medium usage, rather than solely performance-oriented ones. Measurement of the effects and return on the investment depends on the success of setting up a goal and isolating digital from other marketing efforts.

Abstract Limitations possessed by conventional media in serving the needs of media users such as radio, newspapers, magazines or television to adapt to the advancement of communication technology, if there is no concern from competition in the media industry. This study aims to determine the process of media convergence conducted by producer Sore Bara Harsya on the segment in the segment of Makarena. This study uses a qualitative approach and the Concept of Media Convergence Shierly Biagy. The subject of this research is the program of Bara Harsya Event Producer on Radio 99.1 Delta FM Jakarta. Data collection was obtained using non-participants and interviews with program producer Bore Harsya Sore to support interview data with Program Director and Digital Radio Content 99.1 Delta FM Jakarta. Other data about library creation, documentation, and internet. The results showed that in conducting the convergence process on the content of Makarena, the manufacturer has performed four stages which became the basis of consistent convergent media formation. Where the producers have done the stages (chain) applied in the form of maintenance or how to manage, the broadcast network is applied in the form of segmentation of Delta FM radio listener audience, then the conglomerate (conglomerate) used as a form of profit program for the company, and vertical integration (vertical integration ) is applied in the form of combining conventional media (radio) with digital media (youtube) as a form of target market openness. Amongst these stages, in managing content, Makarena Producer is more dominant than conglomerate and vertical as it can support its show program. Keywords: Radio, Content Program, Convergence Media

This paper analyzes the relationship between media and politics in Cuba during the presidency of Raúl Castro (2006–2018). It contributes to the theoretical discussion about the approaches concerning change and continuity in media systems with empirical evidence from interviews with communication and political science experts, and an analysis of non-standardized content in academic, political, legal, and professional documents. The (re)structuring of the media system is explained by the most important political, economic, technological, and cultural events of the period studied: the survival of the Soviet media model, the impact of the U.S. conflict with Cuba on domestic politics, and a (de)territorialized notion of system boundaries. The patterns of change and continuity are discussed through the relationships among the State’s participation in media and the fulfillment of media’s democratic functions, the media policy projection and journalism cultures, and the political articulation of the media and development of the media industry. The articulations among these patterns highlight the relevance of a multidimensional approach as an interpretive dimension of media systems.
