Experimental study on the effect of surface texture on tribological properties of nanodiamond films under water lubrication

The effect of nanoscale surface texture on the frictional and wear performances of nanocrystalline diamond films under water-lubricating conditions were comparatively investigated using a reciprocating ball-on-flat tribometer. Although the untreated nanocrystalline diamond film shows a stable frictional state with an average friction coefficient of 0.26, the subsequent textured films show a beneficial effect on rapidly reducing the friction coefficient, which decreased to a stable value of 0.1. Furthermore, compared with the nanocrystalline diamond coating, the textured films showed a large decreasing rate of the corresponding ball wear rate from 4.16 × 10−3 to 1.15 × 10−3 mm3/N/m. This is due to the fact that the hydrodynamic fluid film composed of water and debris can provide a good lubrication environment, so the entire friction process has reached the state of fluid lubrication. Meanwhile, the surface texture can greatly improve the hydrophilicity of the diamond films, and as the texture density increases, the water contact angle decreases from 94.75° of the nanocrystalline diamond film to 78.5° of the textured films. The proper textured diamond film (NCD90) exhibits superior tribological properties among all tested diamond films, such as short run-in period, low coefficient of friction, and wear rate.

The tribo-map of typical CVD diamond film exhibiting the interaction between the wear rate, friction coefficient and friction conditions would help optimize the working parameters of CVD diamond film coated tools and wear-resistance components. The tribological behaviors of CVD diamond films sliding against Si3N4 balls were studied by conducting a group of tests on the ball-on-plate type reciprocating friction tester under several sliding speeds and normal loads in the ambient air. The examined MCD films and NCD films were deposited on square flat WC-Co substrates. The worn surfaces on the diamond films were observed by SEM and the wear volumes of diamond films were measured by surface profilometer. The results indicated that the influences of the sliding speeds and normal loads on the friction coefficients for both MCD films and NCD films were obvious. When the load was 6 N, MCD film obtained the lowest friction coefficient of 0.11 at the sliding velocity of 0.2 m/s, while for NCD film the minimum value was 0.07 as the sliding speed was 0.13 m/s. The wear rate of the MCD film decreased as the load improved, while for the NCD film, the tendency was just the opposite. The influence of sliding speed on the wear rate of the MCD films was not distinct, while for the NCD films, the sliding velocity greatly affects their wear rate. The wear rates of most NCD films were around 0.2×10-7 mm3/Nm, while those of the MCD films fluctuated from 0.6×10-7~1.6×10-7 mm3/Nm. To elucidate the effect of operating environment on wear mechanism of diamond/ Si3N4 tribo-pair, the tribo-map was developed.

The tribological properties of polyimide (PI) composites reinforced with graphite or MoS2 sliding in liquid alkali and water as well as dry friction were investigated using a ring-on-ring tester. The results show that the friction coefficient (μ) and wear rate (W) for both graphite/PI and MoS2/PI composites in different liquid mediums are μdry>μwater >μalkali and Wwater>Wdry >Walkali. Results also indicate that the friction coefficient and wear rate of the PI composites filled with different solid lubricants are μMoS2 >μgraphite and W MoS2 >Wgraphite in different liquid mediums. In addition, the hydrophobic inorganic fillers are fit for the reinforcement of polymer-based composites sliding in liquid mediums. It is also concluded from the authors’ work that the wear rate and friction coefficient of polymer-based (such as PI, PTFE) composites in the alkali lubricated conditions is lowest among all the friction conditions. This may be attributed to the ionic hydration in the alkaline solution.

Abstract Hybrid materials with the metal matrix are important engineering materials due to their outstanding mechanical and tribological properties. Here are presented selected tribological properties of the hybrid composites with the matrix made of aluminum alloy and reinforced by the silicon carbide and graphite particles. The tribological characteristics of such materials are superior to characteristics of the matrix – the aluminum alloy, as well as to characteristics of the classical metal-matrix composites with a single reinforcing material. Those characteristics depend on the volume fractions of the reinforcing components, sizes of the reinforcing particles, as well as on the fabrication process of the hybrid composites. The considered tribological characteristics are the friction coefficient and the wear rate as functions of the load levels and the volume fractions of the graphite and the SiC particles. The wear rate increases with increase of the load and the Gr particles content and with reduction of the SiC particles content. The friction coefficient increases with the load, as well as with the SiC particles content increase.

The nanocrystalline diamond films were deposited by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PE-CVD) on Si (100) substrate. Reciprocating sliding tests were conducted using Si3N4 balls as a counter body. A method based on the construction of the Abbott curve representing the areas of pristine and worn surface in the wear scars was applied for estimation of the wear rate. The calculated wear rates were compared with the results obtained by profilometric measurements and direct measurement of the wear scars cross sections by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

This paper presents a facile and effective method for preparing Ni/NbSe2 composites in order to improve the wettability of NbSe2 and copper matrix, which is helpful in enhancing the friction-reducing and anti-wear properties of copper-based composites. The powder metallurgy (P/M) technique was used to fabricate copper-based composites with different weight fractions of Ni/NbSe2, and tribological properties of composites were evaluated by using a ball-on-disk friction-and-wear tester. Results indicated that tribological properties of copper-based composites were improved by the addition of Ni/NbSe2. In particular, copper-based composites containing 15 wt.% Ni/NbSe2 showed the lowest friction coefficient (0.16) and wear rate (4.1 × 10−5 mm3·N−1·m−1) among all composites.

Advanced composites are the materials of the new generation. Hence, the focus of the study is to determine the tribological properties of the eutectic Al-Si alloy reinforced with (2, 4, 6, 8, and10 wt. %) of n-Al2O3 against chrome-plated steel ball under dry sliding conditions. The novelty of this work is the fabrication of the composite sample with this elemental composition, which is not done before. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) nonconventional fabrication method is used to fabricate advanced composite samples. Friction coefficient (COF) and wear rate of the composite samples were studied under high load, varying from 50 N to 300 N, using the ball-on-disc tribometer configuration, with other parameters such as stroke, frequency, sliding distance, and sliding velocity remaining constant at 2 mm, 30 Hz, 120 meter, and 0.120 m/s, respectively. Reduction in wear volume for the advanced composite was reported in the range 15.45–44.58% compared to the base alloy (eutectic Al-Si alloy). An increase in friction coefficient was reported in the range 28.80–35.65% compared to the base matrix alloy material. It was also reported that the wear rate increases and the friction coefficient of the composite sample decreases with an increase in load for the tribo-pair. It was observed that an increase in the wt. % of reinforcement influences the friction and wear behavior of the composite. Wear mechanism at high load was characterized by plastic deformation, adhesion, delamination, and abrasion wear. For pre- and postcharacterization of surface and worn tracks, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) electron dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), 3D surface profilometer, and optical microscopy were used. This work aimed to investigate the influence of load on the tribological properties of Al-Si eutectic reinforced n-Al2O3 under dry sliding conditions. Its main objective was to provide a new contribution to the tribological behavior of these composites fabricated using the nonconventional spark plasma sintering method.

Two series of 10% polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/polyether ether ketone (PEEK) composites reinforced with potassium titanate whisker (PTW/PTFE/PEEK) and chopped glass fiber (GF/PTFE/PEEK) were prepared and characterized. We investigated the effects of the additives on thermal stability, tribological properties, mechanical properties, and rheological behavior. The results illustrated that the mechanical properties of 10% PTFE/PEEK blend can be dramatically improved by incorporating either PTW or GF; however, the reinforcing effect of GF was found to be superior. It was found that 1% additive resulted in blends with the best tribological properties. Compared to the unmodified blend, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the 1% PTW blend decreased by 7.2% and 21%, respectively, while the corresponding values of 1% GF blend decreased by 0.66% and 51%, respectively.

The use of vegetable oil-based lubricant as a lubricant in various applications has increased and it is eyed by the industry due to its superior tribological properties, besides possessing the potential to replace petroleum-based lubricants. Palm olein is one of alternative lubricants that could be suitable and attractive as a lubricant to be studied due to its advantages and large production in the country. Thus, in this study, the behavior of palm olein characteristics was investigated by using pin-on-disc experiment, in which a hemispherical pin was loaded against the rotating grooved disc. The experiments via sliding were performed with pin-on-disc tester using pure aluminum as the material for hemispherical pin and SKD11 for disc. The test was implemented by dropping continuous flow of palm olein as lubricating oil on sliding surface at different loads applied, which were 10N, 50N, and 100N. The wear rate of the pin and the friction coefficient were also investigated. Moreover, the surface roughness before and after the experiment was analyzed as well. All the results obtained were compared to hydraulic oil and engine oil-SAE 40. From the analysis, the friction coefficient acquired from lubricated with palm olein was the lowest for both conditions. The wear rate obtained for the three lubricants increased from 10N to 100N load for palm oil, but decreased for hydraulic and engine oil-SAE 40. Meanwhile, the wear rate obtained for lubrication with hydraulic oil showed the lowest value compared to Engine oil-SAE 40 and double fractionated palm olein.

Lightweight, high-strength metal matrix composites have attracted considerable interest because of their attractive physical, mechanical and tribological properties. Moreover, they may offer distinct advantages due to good strength and wear resistance. In this research, AA6063 was reinforced with FA particles using compocasting methods. The effects of fly ash content, load, sliding speed and performance tribology of AA6063 –FA composite were evaluated. Dry sliding wear tests were carried out according to experimental design using the pin-on-disc method with three different loads (24.5, 49 and 73.5 N) and three speeds (150, 200 and 250 rpm) at room temperature. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to analyze the influence of the process parameters on the tribological behavior of the composites. The surface plot showed that the wear rate increased with increasing load, time and sliding velocity. In contrast, the friction coefficient decreased with increasing these parameters. Optimal models for wear rate and friction coefficient showed appropriate results that can be estimated, hence reducing wear testing time and cost.

The effective means to solve material wear is to develop self-lubricating composite materials with excellent tribological, thermal, and mechanical properties. Herein, the composites of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) nanosheet decorated with Silicon Carbide (SiC) were facilely prepared with employing a silane coupling agent, and the corresponding r-GO/SiC/thermosetting polyimide (r-GO/SiC/TPI) nanocomposite films were obtained by in situ polymerization method. The mechanical, tribological, and thermal properties of these nanocomposite films were investigated. When the content of r-GO/SiC was at 1.0 wt%, the compression strength and compression modulus of the composite increased by 37.7% and 47.3%, respectively, which were much higher than that of TPI composites addition of r-GO or SiC alone. Furthermore, r-GO/SiC/TPI composites also exhibited the lowest wear rate and friction coefficient in these reinforced TPI nanocomposites. When the content of r-GO/SiC was 0.8 wt%, particularly, the friction coefficient and wear rate of r-GO/SiC/TPI decreased by 22.8% and 79.8% compared to pure TPI, respectively. Additionally, trace amount r-GO/SiC hybrids also significantly enhance the thermal stability of TPI matrix. Compared to the polyimide composites reinforced by common nano-scale inorganic fillers, the outstanding mechanical and tribological properties of this r-GO/SiC/PI composites could be attributed to the ball on plane structure of GO/SiC, which lead to crack reflection, strength increment. These r-GO/SiC/TPI composites demonstrate the promising potential to be used as high-performance tribological materials in industry applications.
