Primary hyperhidrosis means excessive focal sweating and it has a negative effect on the mental health of those affected. Although there is no gender difference regarding the prevalence of the disease, men are less likely to seek help for this condition. The aim of this study was to explore the meaning of living with primary hyperhidrosis in men. Interviews with 15 men, selected by purposive sampling, were performed at Umeå University Hospital in Sweden between June 2016 and October 2017, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis technique according to Graneheim and Lundman (2004). This study found one theme, namely, to be captured in a filthy body, based on the categories: surrender to the condition reluctantly; prepare for a sweat attack; withdraw from close contacts; and worry about others’ perceptions. The theme describes men living with hyperhidrosis feeling filthy while they struggle to control or hide the excessive sweating. Insufficient understanding from others and being reminded from the sweating is stressful and results in a sense of captivity. Interpreting the result, we conclude that the disease could stigmatize the individual, which has a negative effect on mental health and the will to seek help. Meanwhile, providing information about the disease early, as in schools, could increase the willingness of men to seek medical help. The results of this study also reinforce quantitative studies reporting the negative effects of primary hyperhidrosis on mental health.

Summary Introduction Healthcare professionals (HPs) have been confronted by unprecedented traumatic experiences during the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, especially in countries that had not experienced similar epidemic outbreaks in recent years. Aim To analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of HPs. Method We comprehensively reviewed the studies published in MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science and Google Scholar between December 2019 and May 2020. Results Most studies report a high prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among HPs that can be associated with: (i) COVID-19 exposure; (ii) epidemiological issues; (iii) material resources; (iv) human resources; and (v) personal factors. The role of certain variables, before, during and after the pandemic, remains unexplored. Longitudinal studies will help elucidate which factors are associated with a higher risk of developing long-lasting negative effects. Qualitative studies may contribute to understanding the influence of individual and social narratives in HPs’ distress. Conclusion A deeper analysis on the individual, institutional, political and socio-cultural factors, meanings and values influencing HPs distress and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic is needed.

Abstract. In an online questionnaire filled out by 217 employees of various organizations, we investigated the implication of belief in a just world (BJW) for work-related cognitions and behavior (e.g., emotional exhaustion), taking central work stressors (e.g., workload), as well as work stress-related resources (e.g., autonomy), into account. We argued that BJW might compensate for the negative effects of the aforementioned stressors on work-related cognitions and behavior. BJW serves adaptive psychological functions such as the following: (1) It helps the individual to interpret the events in his or her life in a meaningful way and, thus, to deal with unjust experiences. In light of this function, we hypothesized that employees with a strong BJW would experience more organizational commitment and report fewer turnover intentions, and that the influence of BJW in these areas exists over and above the influence of central stressors and work stress-related resources. A further adaptive function of BJW is that it (2) provides the individual with trust in his or her own efficacy, as well as in the social environment. Thus, we assumed that those high in BJW would estimate that they perform better in their job and show less sick presence. As a consequence of these two functions, (3) BJW fosters mental health. With respect to mental health, we expected high believers to report less emotional exhaustion and fewer symptoms of depersonalization. Results of hierarchical regression analyses confirmed our hypotheses. We argue, therefore, that BJW should be seen as a psychological resource compensating for stress in the workplace.

Stereotypes sometimes lead us to make poor judgements of other people, but they also have the potential to facilitate quick, efficient, and accurate judgements. How can we discern whether any individual act of stereotyping will have the positive or negative effect? How Stereotypes Deceive Us addresses this question. It identifies various factors that determine whether or not the application of a stereotype to an individual in a specific context will facilitate or impede correct judgements and perceptions of the individual. It challenges the thought that stereotyping only and always impedes correct judgement when the stereotypes that are applied are inaccurate, failing to reflect social realities. It argues instead that stereotypes that reflect social realities can lead to misperceptions and misjudgements, and that inaccurate but egalitarian social attitudes can facilitate correct judgements and accurate perceptions. The arguments presented in this book have important implications for those who might engage in stereotyping and for those at risk of being stereotyped. They have implications for those who work in healthcare and those who have mental health conditions. How Stereotypes Deceive Us provides a new conceptual framework—evaluative dispositionalism—that captures the epistemic faults of stereotypes and stereotyping, providing conceptual resources that can be used to improve our own thinking by avoiding the pitfalls of stereotyping, and to challenge other people’s stereotyping where it is likely to lead to misperception and misjudgement.

Abstract It is very important to promote public awareness of the negative effects on health — trans fatty acid effects on cardiovascular disease. The study included 70 patients of the Latvian Centre of Cardiology, Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital (PSCUH). The PSCUH research institute gave permission to conduct the study. The patients answered questions about their awareness of trans fatty acids. The questionnaire used was obtained from the study “Use of Trans Fat Information on Food Labels and Its Determinants in a Multiethnic College Student Population” and modified for survey of the cardiology unit patients. The majority (74%) of the respondents had heard and read something about trans fatty acids, but 62% women and 54% men were poorly informed about trans fatty acids and their negative effect on cardiovascular diseases. Unclear issues for patients were discussed after the questionnaire.

Kata Kunci: buku teks, sekolah dasar, ilmu pengetahuan sosial, kewarganegaraanTHE INDIVIDUAL, COMMUNITY, AND COUNTRY IN THE CONTEXT OF COMMUNITY CITIZENSHIP FORMATION Abstract. This study was aimed to describe the individual, community, and country status and roles for the formation of community citizenship as constructed in textbooks of Social Science in elementary schools. The study utilized the qualitative content analysis technique. The data sources were six electronic textbooks of Social Science for elementary school students for grades I-VI written by Nursa’ban and Rusmawan (2008; 2010a,b) (grades I-III); written by Suranti and Setiawan (2009a,b) (grades IV-VI). The findings of the study showed that the individual, community, and country status and roles for the community citizenship formation was constructed in accordance with the “social-order” and “ideal-type” ideology through the use of symbols, slogans, messages, objectives, and ideas, and supported by the use of the historical policy. Problems of democracy such as social conflicts and issues, contemporary and controversial problems in the closed areas as real community problems had not been explored because it could disrupt the social order and ideal type. Keywords: text-book, elementary schools, social sciences, community citizenship

The impairments associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) not only affect the individual with ASD, but also dramatically impact the parents, caregivers, family, teachers, school system, peers, and the community in general. The overall responsibility is great and felt by everyone who comes into contact with the individual with ASD. In this chapter, we will focus on ASD’s effect on the family. First, we will discuss what is known about how ASD typically impacts the whole family. Second, we will discuss how this family impact causes a reciprocal negative effect on the child with ASD, which may then diminish positive outcomes of interventions. Lastly, we will discuss the extent to which parental involvement is needed during treatments or interventions. I will show how certain interventions may reduce stress and the negative effects on the family and the child with ASD. It is my intention and hope that a discussion of what is “normal” in families affected by ASD will provide you with a greater understanding of ASD and the recognition that you are not alone in dealing with these challenges. This should lessen your sense of isolation and allow you to feel that your family dynamic is less “odd” and unique than you likely currently feel. As knowledge is power, some of the latest evidence and research will be shared. Being armed with this information will provide you with the confidence to tackle the typical difficulties associated with autism. You will learn how to be more resilient and avoid the most common pitfalls. The symptoms of ASD present a unique set of challenges for parents and the family as a whole. Thus, it is not surprising that research in this area indicates that caregivers of those with ASD have decreased parenting efficacy, or a reduced belief in their own parenting skills. These caregivers also have more parenting stress and increased mental and physical health problems. This is true even in comparison to the caregivers of children with other developmental disorders.

This study examines the association of perceived neighborhood cohesion (NC) with older adults’ health and the buffering effects of NC against the negative effects of spousal caregiving on health. Data of 3329 community-living older adults living with a spouse in need of care from the Health and Retirement Study were collected at two time-points. Multiple regression analyses were computed for each of the four health outcomes. For men, NC predicted fewer depressive symptoms and better cognition. NC buffered the negative effect of providing activities of daily living (ADL) help to the wife on cognition. For women, NC predicted fewer depressive symptoms and better cognition. NC buffered the negative effect of providing ADL help to the husband on ADL difficulties. The results accentuate the importance of residency location for older adults’ physical and mental health. The health benefits of NC may have more implications for older adults providing spousal care.

Effective recommendations about how to decrease adverse effects of high heels (HH) need to be provided, since wearing HH is inevitable for most women in their daily life, regardless of their negative impacts on the foot morphology. The main purpose of this systematic review was to summarize studies which have provided specific information about how to effectively offset the negative effects of wearing HH, in the case of women, by means of examining heel height, insole, and heel base support (HBS). Some evidence indicate the following: (i) the range of appropriate heel height for HH shoes is 3.76 cm to 4.47 cm; (ii) compared to small HBS, the larger ones effectively increase gait stability, reduce risk of ankle injury, and improve comfort rating during HH walking; and (iii) the use of a total contact insert (TCI) significantly decreases plantar pressure and the impact on the foot, resulting in higher perceived comfort. It must be noted that these results are based on short-term research; therefore, any conclusions with regard to effects in the long term should be taken with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, future studies should be aimed at combining numerical and experimental methods, in order to provide personal recommendations for HH shoes by considering heel height and HBS size, based on the individual characters (weight, height, and age).
