A novel Injection-rolling Nozzle (IRN) in an imprint system with continuous injection direct rolling (CIDR) for ultra-thin microstructure polymer guide light plates was developed to achieve uniform flow velocity and temperature at the width direction of the cavity exit. A novel IRN cavity was designed. There are eight of feature parameters of cavity were optimized by orthogonal experiments and numerical simulation. Results show that the flow velocity at the width direction of the IRN outlet can reach uniformity, which is far better than that of traditional cavity. The smallest flow velocity difference and temperature difference was 0.6 mm/s and 0.24 K, respectively. The superior performance of the IRN was verified through a CIDR experiment. Several 0.35-mm thick, 340-mm wide, and 10-m long microstructural Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) guide light plates were manufactured. The average filling rates of the microgrooves with the aspect ratio 1:3 reached above 93%. The average light transmittance is 88%.

A pressure sensor in the range of 0–120 MPa with a square diaphragm was designed and fabricated, which was isolated by the oil-filled package. The nonlinearity of the device without circuit compensation is better than 0.4%, and the accuracy is 0.43%. This sensor model was simulated by ANSYS software. Based on this model, we simulated the output voltage and nonlinearity when piezoresistors locations change. The simulation results showed that as the stress of the longitudinal resistor (RL) was increased compared to the transverse resistor (RT), the nonlinear error of the pressure sensor would first decrease to about 0 and then increase. The theoretical calculation and mathematical fitting were given to this phenomenon. Based on this discovery, a method for optimizing the nonlinearity of high-pressure sensors while ensuring the maximum sensitivity was proposed. In the simulation, the output of the optimized model had a significant improvement over the original model, and the nonlinear error significantly decreased from 0.106% to 0.0000713%.

Zero watermarking is an important part of copyright protection of vector geographic data. However, how to improve the robustness of zero watermarking is still a critical challenge, especially in resisting attacks with significant distortion. We proposed a zero watermarking method for vector geographic data based on the number of neighboring features. The method makes full use of spatial characteristics of vector geographic data, including topological characteristics and statistical characteristics. First, the number of first-order neighboring features (NFNF) and the number of second-order neighboring features (NSNF) of every feature in vector geographic data are counted. Then, the watermark bit is determined by the NFNF value, and the watermark index is determined by the NSNF value. Finally, combine the watermark bits and the watermark indices to construct a watermark. Experiments verify the theoretical achievements and good robustness of this method. Simulation results also demonstrate that the normalized coefficient of the method is always kept at 1.00 under the attacks that distort data significantly, which has the superior performance in comparison to other methods.

Dynamic model development and control of an existing operating industrial continuous bulk free radical styrene polymerization process are carried out to evaluate the performance of auto-refrigerated CSTRs (continuous stirred tank reactors). One of the most difficult tasks in polymerization processes is to control the high viscosity reactor contents and heat removal. In this study, temperature control of an auto-refrigerated CSTR is carried out using an alternative control scheme which makes use of a vacuum system connected to the condenser and has not been addressed in the literature (i.e. to the best of our knowledge). The developed model is then verified using some experimental data of the real operating plant. To show the heat removal potential of this control scheme, a common control strategy used in some previous studies is also simulated. Simulation results show a faster dynamics and superior performance of the first control scheme which is already implemented in our operating plant. Besides, a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is developed for the polymerization process under study to provide a better temperature control while satisfying the input/output and the heat exchanger capacity constraints on the heat removal. Then, a comparison has been also made with the conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller utilizing some common tuning rules. Some robustness and stability analyses of the control schemes investigated are also provided through some simulations. Simulation results clearly show the superiority of the NMPC strategy from all aspects.

Reciprocating piston pumps are widely used in various fields, such as automobiles, ships, aviation, and engineering machinery. Conventional reciprocating piston pump distributing flow (RPPDF) systems have the disadvantages of a loose structure and low volumetric efficiency, as well as affected positively by the operating frequency. In this paper, a novel rotating-sleeve distributing flow (RSDF) system is presented for bridging these drawbacks, as well as structurally improved to overcome the inoperable and challenging problems in oil intake and discharge found in the experiment. Moreover, the Singhal cavitation model specifically for the RSDF system and four-cam groove profiles (CGPs) is established. To find the most suitable CGP to reduce the RSDF’s cavitation, the cavitation of the RSDF system was investigated, combining with simulations by taking into account the gap among the rotating sleeve, the pump chamber, and experiments on four presented CGPs. Simulation results based on vapor volume fraction, cavitation ratio, and volumetric efficiency show that the linear profile’s cavitation is the weakest. Finally, the correctness of the simulation is verified through orthogonal experiments. This research is of great significance to the further development of the RSDF system; more important, it has great potential to promote the reform of the RPPDF method.

For low-power wireless systems, transmission data volume is a key property, which influences the energy cost and time delay of transmission. In this paper, we introduce compressive sensing to propose a compressed sampling and collaborative reconstruction framework, which enables real-time direction of arrival estimation for wireless sensor array network. In sampling part, random compressed sampling and 1-bit sampling are utilized to reduce sample data volume while making little extra requirement for hardware. In reconstruction part, collaborative reconstruction method is proposed by exploiting similar sparsity structure of acoustic signal from nodes in the same array. Simulation results show that proposed framework can reach similar performances as conventional DoA methods while requiring less than 15% of transmission bandwidth. Also the proposed framework is compared with some data compression algorithms. While simulation results show framework’s superior performance, field experiment data from a prototype system is presented to validate the results.

This paper presents an integrated roller embossing process named Continuous Injection Direct Rolling (CIDR) process. The CIDR process is similar to Continue Casting Direct Rolling (CCDR) process for metal material. The process consists of Plastic Injection Module, Injection Nozzle, Precision Rolling Module, and Automatic Coiling Module. In the proposed CIDR process, the plastic plate with microstructured pattern is produced by the integrated injection and rolling process, which is different from the current rolling or plastic injection process. Some key technologies including injection nozzle design, roller design, roller coupling, and ultra-precision machining of rollers, are presented. An on-machine measurement method is also proposed and presented to avoid the incontinence and errors caused by disassembling the roller workpiece for off-line measurement. The results of the pilot study are also discussed. The research work provides an enabling solution for precision manufacturing plastic plate and film with microstructured patterns.

SummaryDifferent selective agar media were compared for the recovery and isolation of five species ofListeriafrom raw milk and cheese. The selective media examined were Beerens medium, MacBride medium and that described by Dominguezet al.(1984) with 6 mg/1 acriflavine, listeria selective agar medium (LSAM), and LSAM with 12 mg/1 acriflavine (LSAM × 2A); a non-selective yeast glucose Lemco agar was included for comparison. When the difference between listeria and the natural microflora of raw milk and cheese was 102cfu/ml, listeria could be isolated by direct plating on all media tested. When it was lower than 103–104cfu/ml, listeria were isolated by direct plating only on LSAM and LSAM × 2A. When the difference was greater than 104cfu/ml, a previous enrichment was necessary to isolate them. LSAM and LSAM × 2A media performed better than the other media tested for isolating listeria by direct plating and improved their isolation from dairy products. This superior performance was evaluated by the ability of these media to support colony formation of different species ofListeriatested, the easy recognition of these colonies from those formed by other microorganisms and by their capacity to inhibit the natural microflora of these foods.

In this article, three kinds of belt named B, C and D type are invented, then their main performance are compared with the other two kinds of belt structures introduced in previous papers. Simulation results showed that B and D-type belts are better than the other three. Comparatively the latter needs less material, its molding process is easier, and the tire body is lighter than B type tire, so in general it can be considered that D-type belt is the best among the five kinds of belt structures.

In order to predict and analyse the behaviour of a real system, a simulated model is needed. The more accurate the model the better the response is when dealing with the real plant. This paper presents a model predictive position control of a Two Wheeled Inverted Pendulum robot. The model was developed by system identification using a grey box technique. Simulation results show superior performance of the gains computed using the grey box model as compared to common linearized mathematical model.

Abstract. Both modellers and experimentalists agree that using expert knowledge can improve the realism of conceptual hydrological models. However, their use of expert knowledge differs for each step in the modelling procedure, which involves hydrologically mapping the dominant runoff processes (DRPs) occurring on a given catchment, parameterising these processes within a model, and allocating its parameters. Modellers generally use very simplified mapping approaches, applying their knowledge in constraining the model by defining parameter and process relational rules. In contrast, experimentalists usually prefer to invest all their detailed and qualitative knowledge about processes in obtaining as realistic spatial distribution of DRPs as possible, and in defining narrow value ranges for each model parameter.Runoff simulations are affected by equifinality and numerous other uncertainty sources, which challenge the assumption that the more expert knowledge is used, the better will be the results obtained. To test for the extent to which expert knowledge can improve simulation results under uncertainty, we therefore applied a total of 60 modelling chain combinations forced by five rainfall datasets of increasing accuracy to four nested catchments in the Swiss Pre-Alps. These datasets include hourly precipitation data from automatic stations interpolated with Thiessen polygons and with the inverse distance weighting (IDW) method, as well as different spatial aggregations of Combiprecip, a combination between ground measurements and radar quantitative estimations of precipitation. To map the spatial distribution of the DRPs, three mapping approaches with different levels of involvement of expert knowledge were used to derive so-called process maps. Finally, both a typical modellers' top-down set-up relying on parameter and process constraints and an experimentalists' set-up based on bottom-up thinking and on field expertise were implemented using a newly developed process-based runoff generation module (RGM-PRO). To quantify the uncertainty originating from forcing data, process maps, model parameterisation, and parameter allocation strategy, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed.The simulation results showed that (i) the modelling chains based on the most complex process maps performed slightly better than those based on less expert knowledge; (ii) the bottom-up set-up performed better than the top-down one when simulating short-duration events, but similarly to the top-down set-up when simulating long-duration events; (iii) the differences in performance arising from the different forcing data were due to compensation effects; and (iv) the bottom-up set-up can help identify uncertainty sources, but is prone to overconfidence problems, whereas the top-down set-up seems to accommodate uncertainties in the input data best. Overall, modellers' and experimentalists' concept of model realism differ. This means that the level of detail a model should have to accurately reproduce the DRPs expected must be agreed in advance.
