The lipid peroxidation-inhibiting activities of aqueous methanolic extracts of eleven Salvia species (Fam. Lamiaceae) were evaluated in an enzyme-independent biological system. The total polyphenol contents and the amounts of the most abundant phenoloids of the genus, caffeic and rosmarinic acids, were also determined. The EC50 values of the extracts displayed substantial differences. All of the investigated species except S. jurisicii (EC50 191.2 μg/mL) exhibited higher activities than that of ascorbic acid (EC50 123.8 μg/mL), the reference compound. Among the studied species, S. scabiosifolia (EC50 5.4 μg/mL) demonstrated the highest effect, followed in sequence by S. dumetorum, S. transsylvanica, S. officinalis l albiflora, S. nemorosa l albiflora and S. recognita (EC50 6.5 – 10.2 μg/mL). The close correlation was confirmed between the antioxidant activities and the total phenol contents of the extracts. For caffeic and rosmarinic acids, the correlation was much weaker, indicating the important role of other polyphenols in the antioxidant activity.

The amounts of anthocyanins, flavonoids, total polyphenol and ascorbic acid in seven apple cultivars from Romania were investigated. The amounts of polyphenol and flavonoids in pulp and skin of apple cultivars ranged between 17.18�7.52 mg GAE/g DW and 20.10�11.06 mg CE/g DW as well as 3.64�1.18 mg GAE/g DW and 10.31�5.57 mg CE/g DW, respectively. The highest and smallest values of ascorbic acid both in the skin and the pulp were observed in the cultivars Mutsu and Starkrimson. The anthocyanin content is positively correlated with the colour intensity of the apple epicarp, being about three-fold higher in Prima than Golden Delicious cultivar. The better antioxidant activity provided by the content of polyphenol, ascorbic acid and flavonoids was in apple fruits of Mutsu cultivar and for this reason it should be regarded as a valuable source of antioxidants.

Jatropha species have been shown to be an important source of secondary metabolites with different biological effects. Jatropha cinerea (Ortega) Müll. Arg and Jatropha cordata (Ortega) Müll. Arg are distributed in the Northwestern region of Mexico, are adapted to extreme weather conditions and are widely used (stems, leaves, and sap) in traditional medicine. The aim of the present study was to carry out the phytochemical characterization and the evaluation of the antioxidant activity in methanolic extracts of stems and leaves from J. cinerea and J. cordata. The compounds present in the extracts of both species were characterized by ESI-IT-MS/MS and quantified by HPLC-DAD. The results showed that the stem extracts of both species are rich in phenolic acids, while the leaf extracts are rich in flavonoids. Some of the main compounds found were gallic acid, gentisic acid, 3,4-Dihydroxybenzoic acid, vitexin, isovitexin, and catechol. Both species showed high concentrations of phenols and total flavonoids and antioxidant activity. J. cordata showed the highest antioxidant capacity and the highest concentration of phenolic compounds. Overall, both Jatropha species are a natural source of antioxidant compounds with potential biotechnological uses.

The properties of a substance are determined by the structure of its component molecules. Ascorbic acid occurs abundantly in fresh fruit, especially blackcurrants, citrus fruit and strawberries, and in most fresh vegetables; good sources are broccoli and peppers. It is destroyed by heat and is not well stored in the body3. Ascorbic acid is a good reducing agent and facilitates many metabolic reaction and repair processes. In pharmaceutical preparations and fruit juices, ascorbic acid is readily separated from other compounds by TLC on silica gel and quantitated directly by absorption at 254nm. Serum and plasma may be deproteinized with twice the volume of methanol or ethanol.

Ten indeterminate tomato cultivars differing in fruit shape and typology, grown simultaneously in a greenhouse from Oltenia (Southwestern Romania) and harvested at red ripe stage, were investigated for the contents in ascorbic acid, lycopene, β-carotene, total phenolics, minerals (K, Na, Ca and Mg) and trace elements (Fe, Cu, Mn, Cr, Zn and B). In addition, their antioxidant activities were determined. Significant differences were found among tomato cultivars in all studied antioxidant compounds, as well as in the antioxidant activity. Ascorbic acid ranged from 91.9 to 329.7 mg kg-1 fw, lycopene ranged from 19.7 to 49.0 mg kg-1 fw, while total phenolic compounds varied between 300.2 and 557.8 mg kg-1 fw. Antioxidant activity ranged from 0.81 mmol Trolox kg-1 fw to 1.74 mmol Trolox kg-1 fw and it was significantly correlated to total phenolics content (r = 0.91; p< 0.05). The cocktail type cultivar ‘Tiger’ and the cherry type cultivar ‘Belle’ proved to be the most powerful in antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds while the rectangular plum shaped cultivar ‘Porto’ recorded the highest average lycopene content. A valuable cultivar proved to be the brownish red ‘Sacher’ which registered among the highest contents of phenolics, lycopene and ascorbic acid. Mineral and trace elements contents were also significantly affected by cultivars. Values recorded for K, Ca and Mg ranged from 2139.6 to 3056.9 mg kg-1, 137.7 to 325.8 mg kg-1 and 27.3 to 168.7 mg kg-1 respectively.

Cuminum cyminum (in arabic: Kemoun) is an important source of therapeutic, cosmetic, bio-food and technological agents. Ancient civilizations used this plant for therapeutic purposes. Extracts from this plant are nowadays strongly used in the industrial and research fields, particularly for the medicinal, pharmacological and cosmetological purposes. Bioactive molecules extracted from Cuminum cyminum may express biocidal activities and prove to be good candidates for new antioxidants. The objective of the present work is to evaluate the biological properties of this plant, including antibacterial and antioxidant effects. The seeds of cumin are harvested at the wilaya of Biskra, and stored in a dry place until their use. They were identified at Hassiba Benbouali University of Chlef. Essential oil is obtained by hydro-distillation using a Clivenger type device (AFNOR, 2000). The obtained sample is stored in sealed bottles at low temperature (4°C) and away from light. The antibacterial effect is assessed by the disc method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is determined by standard methods. The antioxidant activity is evaluated by the DPPH free radical trapping method of the methanolic extracts. The essential oil of C. cyminum shows a better activity against Gram+ strains compared to Gram- strains. The determination of MICs leads to the conclusion that its activity can be triggered at a very low concentration. The reaction with DPPH gives an interesting IC50. This testifies to the ability of this essential oil to reduce free radicals. Thanks to the antibacterial activities that we have highlighted, cumin can be considered as a palliative that could replace certain antibiotics. Moreover, its antioxidant activity allows us to use it as a natural food additive.

The presence of natural antioxidant in plants is well known. Plant phenolics constitute one of the major groups of components that act as antioxidant and free radical terminator. Hence, this study focused on investigating the antioxidant activity of Celery plant (Apium graveolens L). The fresh leaves were collected, crushed and extracted with ethanol and acetone by maceration. The radical scavenging properties of the extracts were determined by measuring changes in absorbance of DPPH radical at a wave lenght of 517 nm by UV and ascorbic acid is used as the standard. It showed that the crude ethanolic extract has higher antioxidant activity compared to ascorbic acid and acetone extract with less scavenging activity. The values were (IC50 114.6 µg/mL) for ascorbic acid, (IC50 112 µg/mL) for the crude ethanolic extract and (IC50172 µg/mL) for crude acetone extract. The result shows that Celery plant grown in Jos possess good antioxidant properties which may be linked to the presence of phenolics and flavonoids in the plant, which justifies its use as a medicinal plant. This can be further investigated for the isolation and identification of active compounds of medicinal utilities.

Environmental and occupational exposure to chromium compounds, especially hexavalent chromium, is widely recognized as potentially nephrotoxic in humans and animals. The present study aimed to assess the efficacy of cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) against sodium dichromate-induced nephrotoxicity, oxidative stress, and genotoxicity. Cactus cladodes extract (CCE) was phytochemically studied and tested in vitro for its potential antioxidant activities. Additionally, the preventive effect of CCE against sodium dichromate-induced renal dysfunction in a Wistar rat model (24 rats) was evaluated. For this purpose, CCE at a dose of 100 mg/kg was orally administered, followed by 10 mg/kg sodium dichromate (intraperitoneal injection). After 40 days of treatment, the rats were sacrificed, and the kidneys were excised for histological, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme analyses. The phenol, flavonoid, tannin, ascorbic acid, and carotenoid contents of CCE were considered to be important. Our analyses showed that 1 mL of CCE was equivalent to 982.5 ± 1.79 μg of gallic acid, 294.37 ± 0.84 μg of rutin, 234.78 ± 0.24 μg of catechin, 204.34 ± 1.53 μg of ascorbic acid, and 3.14 ± 0.51 μg of β-carotene. In vivo, pretreatment with CCE was found to provide significant protection against sodium dichromate-induced nephrotoxicity by inhibiting lipid peroxidation, preserving normal antioxidant activities, and protecting renal tissues from lesions and DNA damage. The nephroprotective potential of CCE against sodium dichromate toxicity might be due to its antioxidant properties.

Abstract Objectives Cauliflower is one of the cruciferous vegetables and contains various physiologically active substances such as glucosinolates, polyphenols, and flavonoids. Unlike ordinary vegetables, cruciferous vegetables are often consumed by cooking through heat treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different heating procedures, in particular steaming and boiling, on glucosinolate, total polyphenol, and total flavonoid concentrations in cauliflower. In addition, antioxidant activity was compared between fresh uncooked, steamed, and boiled cauliflower, which are the main methods of preparing cauliflower before consumption. Methods Glucosinolates in uncooked, steamed, and boiled cauliflower were subjected to high-pressure liquid chromatography. Total phenolic and total flavonoid content and antioxidant activities in cauliflower extracted in both water and 80% ethanol were determined. Results Eight glucosinolate peaks were detected in cauliflower representing glucoiberin, progoitrin, glucoraphanin, sinigrin, gluconapin, glucoiberverin, glucobrassicin, and gluconasturtiin. Boiling cauliflower significantly decreased the glucosinolate, total polyphenol, and total flavonoid concentrations compared to those of uncooked or steamed cauliflower. The results clearly indicated that health-promoting compounds in cauliflower are significantly affected by different cooking methods, showing that uncooked > steamed > boiled. The amounts of total polyphenols and total flavonoids contained within uncooked cauliflower extracted by 80% ethanol were higher than those in the steamed and boiled extracts. The highest antioxidant activity was observed in uncooked cauliflower extracted in 80% ethanol compared to that of water extracts at the same concentration. Steamed and boiled cauliflower extracts showed lower antioxidant activity. Conclusions Based on these results, fresh uncooked cauliflower is optimal in terms of the content of health-promoting compounds and antioxidant activity. It may be desirable to use steaming rather than boiling to minimize the loss of glucosinolates when storing, pretreating, processing, and cooking cruciferous vegetables. Platycodi Radix is the root of Platycodon grandiflorum (Jacq.) A. DC and has been used as a traditional medicine in China. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, Platycodi Radix (PR) possesses the character of lung meridian tropism (Guijing) and has selective effects on the lung and respiratory system. The aim of this study was to confirm the antioxidant effects of saponins from Platycodi Radix (PRS), with emphasis on its selective inhibition of lipid peroxidation in different tissues. The hydroxyl radical scavenging activity was determined by a H2O2/Fe2+ system; a modified thiobarbituric acid reactive species assay was used to measure the lipid peroxide in rats' tissues. These antioxidant activities were compared to ascorbic acid (Vc). The results showed that PRS had antioxidant activities in various antioxidant systems. And the inhibition capability of lipid peroxidation of PRS and Vc were excellent, but differed greatly in different tissues. These results suggested that PRS had antioxidant effects and selective inhibition of lipid peroxidation. It indicated that the mechanism of Platycodi Radix to treat some diseases might be related to its antioxidant activity, especially its tissue selective effects. However, further study is needed.
