Three fruit oil samples of Ammodaucus leucotrichus Cosson & Durieu from Algerian Sahara were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC(RI), GC-MS and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The main compounds were perillaldehyde (87.0-87.9%) and limonene (7.4-8.2%). The antimicrobial effect of the essential oil was evaluated against bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi. High antibacterial activity was observed against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter cloaceae, Bacillus cereus and Salmonella typhimurium, with MIC values between 0.5-1.0 μL/mL. Fungal strains were also sensitive to the essential oil (MIC values: 0.25-0.75 μL/mL). The most potent activity was observed against the filamentous fungi, Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus flavus (0.25-0.50 μL/mL).

One oil sample isolated from aerial parts of Pulicaria mauritanica Coss. from Western Algeria has been analyzed by GC(RI), GC-MS and 13C NMR. In total, 21 components, accounting for 97.0% of the oil, were identified. Then, 36 oil samples coming from plants harvested at two flowering periods in three locations were analyzed by GC(RI) and 13C NMR. Although all the oil samples exhibited similar composition, dominated by carvotanacetone (89.2–96.1%), the yield of essential oil varied drastically from sample to sample (0.35–1.44%), depending on the location of harvest. The essential oil displayed moderate antimicrobial effect against bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi (MIC = 2–4 μL/mL).

Garlic powder, essential oil and aqueous extracts from raw garlic and garlic powder prepared in accordance with the corresponding procedures were tested for antimicrobial activity on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Bacillus subtilis 6633, Sarcina lutea ATCC 4391, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027, Salmonella enteritidis, Klebsiel la pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Candida albicans ATCC 10231 and Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404; and, three pathogen microorganisms isolated from human material were also used: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The antimicrobial activities of the preparations were compared with that of commercial antibiotics and four commercial preparation based on garlic powder and essential oil. Aqueous extracts from raw garlic, from freshly prepared powder and powder stored for 18 months at +4?had the greatest antibacterial and antimycotic activities on all the microorganisms tested. The essential oil obtained by hydro distillation and commercial preparations based on garlic essential oil showed no antimicrobial activity on the microorganisms tested. Thermal oils showed a bacteriostatic or very weak bacteriostatic effect on all the microorganisms except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The garlic powder and commercial preparations based on the powder have a strong antimicrobial effect on all the microbes except on Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

In this study, the potential antimicrobial activity of plasma-activated tap water (PAW) was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. For this, PAW was prepared in a gliding arc plasma system using two treatment conditions: stagnant water and water stirring by a magnetic stirrer, called moving water. Subsequently, their oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), pH, electrical conductivity (σ), and total dissolved solids (TDS) were monitored in different areas of the sample divided according to the depth of the beaker. It was observed that PAW obtained in dynamic conditions showed a more uniform acidity among the evaluated areas with pH 3.53 and ORP of 215 mV. Finally, standardized suspensions of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Escherichia coli (ATCC 10799), and Candida albicans (SC 5314) were treated with PAW, and the reduction of viable cells determined the antimicrobial effect. Our results indicate that the tap water, activated by plasma treatment using gliding arc, is an excellent inactivation agent in the case of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. On the other hand, no significant antimicrobial activity was achieved for Candida albicans.

The aim of this study was to investigate the probiotic potential of bacteriocin-producing lactobacilli strain Lactobacillus plantarum G2 isolated from the vaginal mucus of healthy women. The antimicrobial effect of G2 was confirmed in the mixed culture with pathogenic Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella abony and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while bacteriocine activity was detected against S. aureus and S. abony only. The strain showed an excellent survival rate in low pH and in the presence of bile salts. The percentage of adhered cells of L. plantarum G2 to hexadecane was 63.85?2.0 indicating the intermediate hydrophobicity.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oil isolated from Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) leaves, Masters originating in Morocco (Benslimane Region, Atlantic-influenced plain). The analysis of the major compounds of essential oil was performed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, and this oil is dominated by bornyl acetate (35.05%), camphor (11.17%), and α-pinene (10.84%). The antioxidant properties were evaluated by the test of the radical trap 2,2-diphényl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and the antimicrobial activity of T. articulata essential oil was tested against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli which have been inhibited from the 25 μg/mL.

The essential oil of Achillea distans W. et K. flower heads was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Altogether 43 components in concentrations more than 0.1% were identified representing 93.5% of the oil composition. The main constituents were 1,8-cineole (16.8%), trans-thujone (9.8%), sabinene (8.2%), borneol (7.5%), β-pinene (6.5%), and camphor (5.8%). The oil showed moderate activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, and weak activity against Salmonella typhimurium, Proteus vulgaris, and Escherichia coli.

The aim of this work was to investigate the essential oil of Artemisia judaica L. (ssp. Sahariensis) originated from south of Algeria by evaluating its antimicrobial activity as well as its mechanisms of action against bacterial and fungal microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated against 17 microbial strains. The mechanisms of action of Artemisia judaica essential oil (AJEO) have been studied by the evaluation of the release of cellular material (260 nm), the cell viability, the activity of lipase, and the salt tolerance. The AJEO yield was 1.27 ± 0.24% (w/w). The chemical composition of AJEO was characterized by a high content of piperitone (71.1%). The most sensitive bacterium was Staphylococcus aureus with an MIC of 2.73 mg/mL. AJEO was found to be enough to kill strains tested at least 40% after thirty seconds of incubation and to induce release of cellular material. On the other hand, AJEO showed complete inhibition of lipase activity of Candida albicans cells as well as the ability of cells to form colonies on saline medium. AJEO has a powerful antimicrobial activity against different microbial organisms with different mechanisms of action. AJEO seem to be useful in pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic application.
