To evaluate the relationship between tree peony cultivars and the quality consistency of Cortex Moutan, a sensitive, reliable, and validated method based on high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry was developed for the quantitative analysis of paeonol and chemical fingerprinting of Cortex Moutan. Results from quantitative analysis showed that the content of paeonol in Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan” was the highest (24.51 ± 0.83 mg/g), followed by Paeonia suffruticosa “Luoyang Hong” (14.29 ± 0.76 mg/g), P. suffruticosa “Taiping Hong” (13.99±1.13 mg/g), and P. suffruticosa “Zhaofen” (13.08±0.85 mg/g). Paeonia ostii “Luoyang Feng Dan” was found to have the lowest content (8.76±0.46 mg/g) of paeonol. In qualitative analysis, 5 tree peony cultivars collected from different plantations in China were used to establish the fingerprint. For the fingerprint analysis, 17 characteristic peaks were used to evaluate similarities among tree peony cultivars, and they were found to show similarities. In short, the results of quantitative and qualitative analyses suggested that there was no significant difference in the chemical composition of Cortex Moutan from different tree peony varieties; however, there were significant differences in the levels of chemical components. The method developed in this study provides an important reference to establish a quality control method for other related traditional Chinese medicinal preparations.

Medicinal Zhebeimu refers to the dried bulb of the plant Fritillaria thunbergii, which belongs to the family Liliaceae. Their main production sites are in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui Provinces, with alkaloids as the main components. In this study, according to Chinese Pharmacopoeia, different mobile phases were investigated. Because most alkaloids in Fritillaria do not have UV absorption, evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD) was used instead of UV to produce the HPLC-ELSD spectra for five F. thunbergii samples and other samples, e.g. F. chuanxiensis, F. anhuiensis, and F. ussuriensis. Comparison showed significant differences exist among these species. There was no significant difference between the F. thunbergii samples produced in Zhejiang, which clustered together in both the cluster analyses. However, the F. thunbergii samples produced in Nantong, Jiangsu and the F. thunbergii samples produced in Zhejiang were separated in the clustering chart, which may be caused by different cultivation environments. The obtained results showed that the combination of quantitative analysis and chromatographic fingerprint analysis can be readily utilized for quality control purposes, offering a comprehensive strategy for quality evaluation of F. thunbergii and related products. © 2021 Friends Science Publishers

Fermented Cordyceps sinensis, the succedaneum of Cordyceps sinensis which is extracted and separated from Cordyceps sinensis by artificial fermentation, is commonly used in eastern Asia in clinical treatments due to its health benefit. In this paper, a new strategy for differentiating and comprehensively evaluating the quality of products of fermented Cordyceps sinensis has been established, based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprint analysis combined with similar analysis (SA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), and the quantitative analysis of multicomponents by single marker (QAMS). Ten common peaks were collected and analysed using SA, HCA, and QAMS. These methods indicated that 30 fermented Cordyceps sinensis samples could be categorized into two groups by HCA. Five peaks were identified as uracil, uridine, adenine, guanosine, and adenosine, and according to the results from the diode array detector, which can be used to confirm peak purity, the purities of these compounds were greater than 990. Adenosine was chosen as the internal reference substance. The relative correction factors (RCF) between adenosine and the other four nucleosides were calculated and investigated using the QAMS method. Meanwhile, the accuracy of the QAMS method was confirmed by comparing the results of that method with those of an external standard method with cosines of the angles between the groups. No significant difference between the two methods was observed. In conclusion, the method established herein was efficient, successful in identifying the products of fermented Cordyceps sinensis, and scientifically valid to be applicable in the systematic quality control of fermented Cordyceps sinensis products.

The rubber borers, called of the bark beetles, is the most important pest of the rubber trees in the world. The effect of the pheromone releasing measure, a kind of ecological control method, was investigated over 2 years in Nanbao Farm, Lingao county, Hainan, China. The pheromone used was (s)-(+)-Ipsidenol, a commercially available rubber borers aggregation pheromone. There were 6 treatments, including 10m, 20m, 30m, 40m, 50m and 100m distance. Pheromone lures were changed monthly at which time the traps were moved to a different location within the stand. There were no significant differences in 30m distance catches of the rubber borers per traps. Meanwhile, there was no significant difference in plant damage between the pheromone treatment of 2.5 mg/mL and 3 mg/mL traps. The results also showed that the relationship between the mean number of the rubber borers per 5 days and average temperature was not significant.

A HPLC method has been developed for simultaneously detecting chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, senkyunolide I, senkyunolide H, coniferyl ferulate, senkyunolide A, ligustilide, and levistolide A in Angelicae Sinensis Radix through quantitative analysis of multicomponents by single-marker (QAMS) method with ferulic acid as internal standard substance. The relative analysis correction factors of each component in Angelicae Sinensis Radix have good reproducibility under different chromatography conditions. In addition, no significant difference of results was found between quantitative analysis of multicomponents by single-marker (QAMS) method and external standard method in determining content of these components of different Angelicae Sinensis Radix and its 12 kinds of preparations. As a result, the established QAMS method for Angelicae Sinensis Radix analysis with ferulic acid as internal standard substance is accurate and feasible, which could be used as an effective and economical method to control quality of Angelicae Sinensis Radix and its herbal products.

Background: Up to date, generic linezolid injections produced by Chinese manufacturers were not widely used in clinic in China. Quality evaluation of linezolid injections produced in China is prerequisite, which has rarely been performed. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of branded and generic injections from different manufacturers and to provide a basis for the quality control. Methods: In this study, the content of linezolid, related impurities and enantiomer of linezolid were determined by high performance liquid chromatography. The content of glucose was determined by iodine method. The insoluble particles and visible and sub-visible particles were determined by light blockage and lamp test respectively. Osmotic pressure was determined by freezing point depression method. Standard solution control method was used to check the color of the injection. Linezolid injections from different manufacturers were evaluated uniformly. Results: No significant difference was found in the content of linezolid, glucose, related impurities, visible particles, insoluble particles, pH value, and solution color between branded and generic drugs from different manufacturers in China. Conclusion: The quality of samples from different manufacturers is consistent. Although the physicochemical similarity does not guarantee the bioequivalence of studied branded and generic linezolid injections, the results provide references for further bioequivalence study. Generic injections offer more affordable treatment options for patients with infections than expensive branded drugs.

Environmental Context. A new group of arsenic compounds, namely thio-arsenosugars, has recently been discovered in some marine samples, including seafood products. We do not yet understand how these arsenic compounds are produced by living organisms, nor do we know their implications for human health. Their unusual chromatographic properties are the reason that they are difficult to detect by existing methods. We present a new method for finding these thio-arsenosugars, and we also report two new thio-arsenosugars. Abstract. Two new thio-arsenosugars were identified in aqueous and methanol extracts from the gonad and the muscle of the great scallop by using high-performance liquid chromatography–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC–ICPMS) and HPLC–electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESMS). The gonad of the scallops contained thio-arsenosugar–sulfonate [0.067 mg (As) kg−1; dry mass ± 3.7%] and thio-arsenosugar–sulfate [0.267 mg (As) kg−1; dry mass ± 1.2%]. The muscle also contained both thio-arsenosugar–sulfonate [0.030 mg (As) kg−1; dry mass ± 2.6%] and thio-arsenosugar–sulfate [0.200 mg (As) kg−1; dry mass ± 2.6%]. Methanol increased the extraction efficiency threefold for the two thio-arsenosugars as compared to water. Fresh and freeze-dried samples from both parts of the scallop showed no significant difference with respect to the concentration of the two thio-arsenosugars. In order to confirm the presence of the thio-arsenosugars, a new method for their determination with HPLC–ESMS was developed. Under optimized conditions [Hamilton PRP-X100; 150 by 1.0 mm; 20 mM NH4HCO3 with 55% (v/v) methanol at pH 10.3] we succeeded in determining the pseudomolecular ions of thio-arsenosugar–glycerol, thio-arsenosugar–phosphate, thio-arsenosugar–sulfonate, and thio-arsenosugar–sulfate at concentrations less than 5 µg (As) dm−3 in standard solutions and real samples.

Abstract Gleditsiae Fructus Abnormalis and Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus are obtained from different developmental stages of fruits from Gleditsia sinensis Lam. (Leguminosae). The possible interchangeable usage of the two fruits, however, has long been very controversial. Here, high performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection was developed to explore their chemical fingerprinting profiles. Besides, the amounts of aglycones of saponin compounds, echinocystic acid and oleanolic acid in both fruits were quantified. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in the content of aglycones from the two types of fruits. However, their chromatographic fingerprints showed distinct characteristics. Therefore, the interchangeable application of these fruits has to be taken with a specific precaution.

The banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus, is the most important pest of banana in the world. The effect of the pheromone releasing measure, a kind of ecological control method, was investigated over 2 years in Nanbao Farm, Lingao county, Hainan, China. The pheromone used was Cosmolure+, a commercially available C. sordidus aggregation pheromone. There were 3 treatments, including 0, 5 and 10 pheromone traps/ha. Pheromone lures were changed monthly at which time the traps were moved to a different location within the stand. There were no significant differences in mean catches of C. sordidus per trap in the most of the investigation period except September 2009. Meanwhile, there was no significant difference in plant damage between the pheromone treatment of 5 traps/ha and 10 traps/ha. The results also showed that the relationship between the mean number of weevils caught per month and average rainfall was not significant. Possible reasons for the 5 traps/ha efficacy in this study are discussed.
